Earlier this month, Swansea manager Garry Monk bolstered his attacking options with the capture of Braga centre-forward Eder on a three-year deal. Having plied his trade in the Primeira Liga for the past six seasons, the Portuguese striker was delighted to finally make the switch to the Liberty, after first arriving on the Swans’ radar back in 2012, when Michael Laudrup was in charge:

“I am very happy to have signed with Swansea. It’s a big club and I believe I can progress as a footballer here. The Premier League will be a step up for me, but I’ve played in the European competitions and also for my country so I’ve experienced different levels of the game. Hopefully my team-mates will help me develop and settle in quickly at the club. I can’t wait to meet all of them when I report for pre-season training. Swansea are a solid club who have big ambitions – last season confirmed that – and it’s great for me to be a part of it.”

The History

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Eder emigrated to Portugal at a young age and begun his footballing career at ADC Ademia. The six-foot-three-inch forward earned his senior debut for third-division Portuguese outfit Oliverira Hospital, producing seven goals in 23 appearances before switching to fellow third division club Tourizense, where he amassed 10 goals in 34 outings the following season.

Having cut his teeth in the lower leagues, Eder’s first taste of top-flight football arrived following a move to Academica. Throughout his four seasons with the Primeira Liga side, Eder carded 12 goals and nine assists in 83 league outings and also contributed to Academica’s first Portuguese Cup win since 1939, courtesy of a win over Sporting Lisbon.

Braga then snapped up the Portugal international in the summer of 2012 on a four-year deal. Eder’s first season with Os Arcebispos (The Archbishops) was curtailed by injury when he suffered ligament damage in February. Nonetheless, he still managed to tally an impressive 13 goals and three assists in just 18 league appearances.

Eder made just ten starts the following campaign, registering three goals and two assists. The past season saw the rangy forward handed the most pitch time since his transfer to Braga, harvesting 10 goals and one assist in 28 appearances. In all, Eder notched 26 goals and six assists in 59 league outings during his stay at the Municipal Stadium.

On the international front, Eder made his full debut for Portugal during a 2014 World Cup qualifier back in August 2012. His solitary goal for A Seleccao arrived in a friendly against Italy in June 2015.

The Prospects

Given that Swans boss Garry Monk primarily favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation last term, there doesn’t appear to be a natural role for Eder to fill. Bafetimbi Gomis is sure to retain his lone striker berth – having bagged five goals in his last six appearances of the campaign – while Gylfi Sigurdsson cemented the number ten spot with seven goals and ten assists in the season gone by. On the flanks, new boy Andre Ayew will likely be deployed in his favoured role on the left, while Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge are able servants on either wing.

Having been fielded as a centre-forward in every league appearance he made last season, Eder should serve as a back-up to Gomis in a one-striker formation – particularly when Monk has already referred to Eder as “competition” for the former Lyon frontman:

“Eder is the type of striker we’ve been looking for. He has excellent attributes; strong, quick and technically sound with the ball. He has a good pedigree and is a full international with Portugal. He fits our profile in terms of the players we’ve signed in the last two seasons because he’s young, hungry and eager to prove himself in the Premier League. He has the characteristics we are looking for and will certainly add competition to the striking department. I’m looking forward to seeing him work alongside the likes of Bafe (Gomis) and Marvin (Emnes). And the fact that we’ve got him in early is a bonus.”

Last year, however, Monk adopted a 4-3-1-2 formation on a handful of occasions, and a return to such a system would allow the Portuguese marksman to possibly earn starts in a two-man attack. That being said, Ayew also possess the skill set to partner Gomis up top and could be considered a better foil to the Frenchman in light of his propensity for making runs in behind.

Save for developments in pre-season that suggest he can establish a starting role, Eder – priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game – looks like one to steer clear of in the early stages. Currently, Sigurdsson and Ki Sung-yeung are the most popular outfield options for the Swans; both currently sit in 9.1% of teams, with the latter’s eight strikes and 5.5 price tag making him one of the stand-out options in the sub-6.0 midfield bracket. Gomis, meanwhile, is available for only 7.0, and having netted against the likes of Arsenal and City last season, has already highlighted his fixture-proof appeal.

The Swans kick off the 2015/16 campaign with a trip to champions Chelsea, before hosting Manchester United in Gameweek 4. Mercifully, the Welsh club’s other four fixtures (NEW, sun, wat, EVE ) in their opening half-dozen look to be more fertile grounds for their attacking contingent. For now, though, it seems Eder’s time may be restricted to minutes off the bench unless Monk switches systems in order to accommodate a two-man frontline.

    @Rupert...re metallic taste.

Sorry I forgot about the thread

The first thing to look at it is infection. Taste buds trigger saliva production...any problem with either saliva glands or taste buds will reduce saliva. Saliva production aids with eating and stopping infections in the mouth, so the fact you have ulcers may indicate a problem with that....It also leads to a metallic taste in the mouth. Common medications of many kinds can affect either the taste buds or the saliva glands.
Second thing to look for is slight swellings of the submandibular saliva gland or sublingual saliva gland...that would indicate a blockage, usually of calcium in the saliva duct with the same effect as above.
Thirdly...as you rightly say...it could be an indicator of diabetes...

Go to the docs for a check up.

Just been doing a little bit of digging around on the West Brom defence under Pulis.

Dawson & McAuley were regular features at right-back and right-sided centre-back, Lescott also started every game under Pulis, however...

Games in which Lescott played LB: TOT, mci, mun, new, CHE, ars.

Games in which Brunt played LB: SWA, sun, SOU, avl, STK, QPR, LEI, cry, LIV.

Pretty much fixture orientated, but either way Pulis never plays a natural left-back, McClean's presence there in pre-season proves that. Doubt we'll see a LB signing, leaving us with only 3 real options in that backline, stuff you Tony.

Great digging. Yeah I thought he might be a spoilsport and deny us a 4.5m def. This might explain why they seem to keep out tougher opposition more and concede to smaller teams - they simply line up better at the back for the tough games.

Also worth noting that Pulis had minimal success with Lescott at LB.

        TOT: Lost 3-0.

mci: Lost 3-0, although McAuley was sent off very early in that one.

        mun: Won 1-0.

        new: Drew 1-1.

        CHE: Won 3-0.

        ars: Lost 4-1.

2 cleanies out of those 6 isn't too bad (and they probably attacked more against Newcastle). But when they lost, they generally lost good...a few thumpings in there.

The last four were right at the end of the season when most of the teams involved had little to play for(excluding Walcott playing for his Cup final spot and Newcastle pushing to stay up). Still, as you say, not bad returns.

The Welshman loves playing centre-backs at full-back. Dawson himself is basically a converted centre-back, meaning two out of position at times last season, Mariappa also played RB during his days at Palace. Cameron and Wilson examples at Stoke.

Although, watching Lescott play at left-back last season, he wasn't half getting forward sometimes.

Neither was Dawson, but as you'd expect for converted centre-backs, the quality going forward simply isn't there.

Dawson had ZERO assists throughout the entirety of last season.

Lescott just the one when at left-back against Chelsea. A pass inside to Berahino who hit it into the top corner on the turn from about 25 yards out.

I just like the balance off team without him. Happy with a front 8 that I wouldn't rotate and play every week.

This gives me the option for a very strong 3 man forward line Costa - lukaku - Rooney allowing me to jump on a cheaper bandwagon player and bring in Aguero quite easily too. Likewise for the mid where i can trade a big hitter forward/under performing mid for haz/Sanchez a few weeks in (also due to high ownership hazard is far more likely to drop than rise after a few games pending performances)

No-one's essential at this point. A lot of people around here are going for Fab, for reasons of historical quick-starts, mainly. Fab has indeed started quickly, but Haz hasn't started badly. I'm also finding it hard to fit him in, but will suffer a bit organisationally if he gets off to a good start, which could very easily happen if Chelsea come out all guns firing again like last season

alright guys, almost done. playing 3-5-2 this year:

      Butland ( Ruddy )
      azpi - Darmian - Huth ( Coates ) ( STaylor )
      Hazard - Milner - Walcott - Yaya - Tadic
      Rooney - Wilson - Deeney

2.0 ITB to do Walcott > Sanchez or Walcott > Ozil and Rooney > Aguero

To all of you who plans to "get Kun on GW 4"

What happens when he's declared fit on GW 2. Or worse, came off the bench and score a goal last minute on GW 1.

      Will you all..
      a) Stick to the plan. City got CHE eve which are not a good fixture

      b) Beard on fire. Abandon plan. Go Rooney / Costa -> Kun and take hit elsewhere.

Last year he had a sub appearance in the first 3 games of the season and I believe he scored in all 3 off the bench. Make of that what you will

        Stick to A.

GW2 is Chelsea, so I'd expect him to play, but not score heavily. Jose loves his 1-0 in these games.

He has had no pre-season as yet, not even back form his hols, and Pelli has other options.

Also keep telling myself to build my squad around the first 5 GW's, so Citeh don't look good for me. Will most likely WC early anyway, unless I strike lucky from the off.

I'm really on the fence between starting with Aguero or not. Setting up your team to have forced transfers is not advisable.
But if Aguero has hardly any preseason, then starting with him is a real risk. And a 13.0m risk, at that.

Is Ivan worth it? For those those are interested, I have settled on Azpi + Kos with 3 x 4.5m Defs

Last season Ivan averaged 4.7 ppg. (4 Goals 6 assists + 561 BPS)

      Azpi averaged 4.6 ppg (3 Assists + 627 BPS)

      Kos averaged 4.4 ppg (3 Goals + 575 BPS)

If I want Ivan I need to drop Kos to a 5m. Is there a 5m that will take up the slack? Is it worth leaving my team unbalanced?

Of course there are other what ifs and maybes but for me it’s Azpi + Kos and I have Haz.

I was 300 something once around December. Then, the wheels came off for a bit and bounced me out of that territory. I think I took a punt on Dos Santos at Arsenal, and that didn't come off. It was one of many errors. Finished around the 25k mark ultimately. The lesson here: Don't take stupid punts when you are rolling along nicely.

It wasn't even a case of stupid punts... The template shifted and I was slow to follow. Held on to Baines, Fabregas, Downing and a few others well past their sell-by date. The other lesson is not to get complacent and lazy when things are going well!
