James Milner nets again as Liverpool chalk up a third straight win. Watford’s Matej Vydra and West Brom forward Brown Ideye also score for the second successive match, whilst Cameron Jerome misses out through injury as Norwich fall to defeat.

Adelaide United 0 Liverpool 2

Rodgers opted for a 4-3-3 set-up for the Reds’ impressive win over the Australian outfit, with central striker Divock Origi flanked by Jordon Ibe and Adam Lallana. Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson and James Milner were stationed in midfield, while the back five comprised of Simon Mignolet, Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez.

Ibe, a 5.0 midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was the stand-out performer on show, delivering the cross for James Milner’s opener, before Danny Ings recorded his debut goal for the club.

Milner has now netted in two consecutive matches while deployed in a central midfield berth, strengthening his claim to be selected ahead of the identically priced Henderson (7.0). Joe Gomez also put on another impressive display as the 18-year-old continued to stake a claim for a starting role following his move from Charlton; Gomez is yet to be added to the FPL roster but is likely to be priced at 4.5 on his inclusion.

As for Ibe, Rodgers favours the London-born starlet in a wide role but didn’t rule out the possibility of fielding him as a number 10:

“I’ve played him in the No.10 [role] – I’ve had a little look at him in there and I think he could maybe play that role as well, but I think he is a natural winger that likes to be on the outside. He’s happy to be in the duel and likes to set up the one v one. His best positions will be on the sides, for sure.”

SC Paderborn 07 0 Watford 2

The Hornets capped off their tour of Germany with a well-fought victory, besting second-tier outfit Paderborn in a tempestuous affair. Matej Vydra scored for the second successive match after latching onto a through ball from Troy Deeney, while Odion Ighalo continued his run of scoring in every warm-up tie by netting his sixth goal in four encounters. Ighalo (5.0) – who’s priced below Deeney (5.5) – is certainly enhancing his viability as a budget third striker. Intriguingly, Ighalo has been linked with a move to Villa as Tim Sherwood looks for a new centre-forward in light of Christian Benteke’s imminent departure.

Quique Sanchez Flores slightly tweaked his tactics this time around, according to the local press. Having started with a 4-2-3-1 in previous matches, he moved to a 4-1-3-2 set-up. Giederius Arlauskis and Allan Nyom were handed debuts in defence alongside Sebastian Prodl, Craig Cathcart and Jose Holebas. Etienne Capoue sat in front of the back-four, whilst Vydra joined Troy Deeney up front, with Almen Abdi, Valon Behrami and Ben Watson stationed behind. Flores made six changes over the course of the second half and allowed Ighalo – who had been featured in attacking midfield in every previous match over the close-season – to replace Vydra alongside Deeney in the front two this time.

Richmond Kickers 1 West Bromwich Albion 2

The Baggies left it late to triumph over their Virginia-based opponents, with Brown Ideye heading home one minute from time following a Stephane Sessegnon cross to claim his second goal in as many matches. James McClean bagged the West Midlanders’ first of the afternoon, unleashing a 25-yard dipping strike after cutting in from the right wing.

Chris Brunt started at left-back, enabling McClean to operate further forward in a 4-4-2 set-up. Liam O’Neill, Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson joined the former in defence, while Darren Fletcher, Claudio Yacob and Callum McManaman lined up with the latter in midfield. Saido Berahino and Victor Anichebe were partnered up top for the first period.

Jonas Olsson is now an injury doubt after he limped off five minutes before the final whistle. Joleon Lescot and Craig Dawson, meanwhile, were rested as a precaution and are expected to face Swindon Town on July 25.

Maccabi Haifa 1 Norwich City 0

The Canaries fell to their first defeat of the summer, having easily dispatched of three lower-league English sides in the past ten days. Nathan Redmond made his first appearance since returning from international duty with the England U21s. Sebastien Bassong paired up with Ryan Bennett in central defence, with Elliot Bennett at right-back and, significantly, Bradley Johnson at left-back. Gary O’Neil, Graham Dorrans and Jonny Howson joined Redmond in midfield, with Tony Andreu supporting Gary Hooper in attack.

Johnson’s shift to the defence will be a mild concern given that, at 5.5 in the FPL, he is considered a strong budget midfield option, having struck 15 goals in the Canaries’ promotion season. On the flipside, Andreu has caught the eye in pre-season and is being given opportunities in an attacking role. Once compared to Cesc Fabregas in style, Andreu is available as a 4.5 midfielder. Elsewhere for the Canaries, Cameron Jerome missed out after sustaining a foot injury against Cambridge on Friday evening. The striker, who has scored five goals so far this summer, now has a protective cast on his foot as a precautionary measure.

  1. How important is player ownership for GW1?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

How Important is player ownership for our GW1 teams?

I see a lot of people are concerned about Hazards high ownership (54%). Personally this doesn't worry me because highly owned players won't go up in price quickly but have the potential to plummet in price if they get off to a bad start. The opposite is true for low ownership players unless they are exclusively FFS bandwagons.

What about points you ask? Well we simply don't know if highly owned players will start well or not. We can't predict how many points they will or won't get. If Hazard starts well then at least I know his price won't go up too much making it easier to bring him in.

What about a plummet in rank? Overall rank in the early game weeks is meaningless. GW8 of last season is an excellent example of how you could move up in rank from 300k to 10k in one GW. It is the same for a real football manager, they don't look at the leaderboard after 2 or 3 games.

How do you feel about player ownership in GW1? is it different to how you would see it in GW30? can you give us examples of how player ownership can be viewed differently at various stages in a season?

It will just be depressing if Hazard does really well GW1 and you don't have him

With City in GW2? I'm not so sure. 1GW is nothing in the grand scheme of things and there is no guarantee he will do well in GW1 either.

It's mostly depressing if he outscores Fabregas. Besides with the extra 2.5 mil you might get more points out of somewhere else

Not if you've put the 2.5 saved towards, say, Rooney, and Rooney scores a couple. It's not just about how well Hazard will do, it's about the overall team.

It's not about how quickly they go up in price it's more about the possible Hazard pointsx2 that will hurt you if you don't own him.

Plenty of other captaincy options and you are also making the assumption he will score points straight away, he might but so might others.

I wasn't assuming anything I just said the possible points. You on the other hand are assuming he won't get points which is very risky tactic considering the amount of people who own him and will probably captain him. I don't have him at the moment because I like my team more without him but it's a big risk to start with.

If Hazard does get off to a good start I'll simply buy him in. I never said I wouldn't get him. I can be safe in the comfort of knowing his price won't go up very much because of his high ownership.

I understand what you're saying but I'm not concerned about the prices going up or down for me it's all about the points that the given player will get.

Points are points and they will come according to our own predictions on who will do well. I'm thinking playing the odds with price changes can put one in a good position early on.

With players like Hazard, though, it's about risk management. You can't win FPL in the first few weeks, but you can certainly lose it. Any Hazard goal raises the average by 3-4 points. And as an owner, even a blank won't hurt as most other people own him too.

Why is there a need for risk management in the first few GW's? As I stated you can make massive inroads into overall rank in just 1GW. Imagine what you can do if you go on a run of good game weeks.

You said yourself, we can't predict who will score points each week - why bother try and risk being left behind? Much safer to stay with the pack and reassess after a few rounds

Staying with the pack isn't going to get you a good rank early on. Just an average one. But the point is not about rank early on because early rank is largely meaningless. Also I'm not suggesting we avoid high ownership altogether. If Hazard starts well then I can take comfort in the fact his price won't go up much making it easy to bring him in.

I have not looked at player ownership even once till now. My aim is to get the 15 best players that can be arranged in £100m, and if I can get that right, everything else will fall in place.

It's impossible to get all the right players at the start. It's better to go safe at the start and go from there.

Building TV is an important aspect of building a campaign. I think its worth being wary of potential risks financially. Players that will be sold potentially on mass if they have an unsustainably high ownership.

I understand your point here, but the year before last year, I went for an early transfer/safe player approach from the go, and I ended up with a rank of 100k... On the other hand, I managed 8k last year even though I ended up terrible team value, but picked more players who I wanted, and that came of.

A delicate balance of both is most desired, but somehow I get it wrong when I consider popular transfers too much.

I will pretty much not look at player ownership when making my decisions for GW1 team. I'll choose the players I want and if that happens to be the norm then so be it.

I tend to look at player ownership later on in the season but even then I'm more likely to look at what my rivals have than what players in the whole game have.

Innsie put in a good point below. If you are a Wanyama fan (massive FFS wagon) and he loses value, wouldn't that put you in a spot of bother early on? I know Jonty has often had to grin and bear price drops to near 4m for his cheap mids in the past. Very awkward to move on.

Ownership doesn't concern me all that much at the best of times, it's not the way I play.

What matters more is the changes of ownership in the early season - price changes are quickest in the first few weeks while there are few dead teams. So getting on some sensible bandwagons (and getting off some sinking ships) can help in building TV. And that does relate to ownership in a way.

Ideal (of course) is to get lower ownership players that do really well in GW1 and/or GW2 and get price rises as a result. Then you build TV without having to use FTs in doing it. 🙂

Well, if I knew I wouldn't tell you. But obviously I don't. Though I will be starting with 2 or 3 players that aren't getting much mention on here and have low ownership right now. Maybe I'll get it right and maybe I won't. 🙂

Precisely. The opposite effect can happen if they are just FFS wagons though. Because they will be highly owned on here we'd all be onto it enough to move them on resulting in massive price drops as a 5% ownership becomes less than 1% ownership.

Right now, i am more focussed on team balance than player ownership. It's a tough task, drafting in all the players with high ownership. Also, it doesn't mean that those players have good starting fixtures.

This argument about price drops isn't true.

If a player has high ownership they need more sales to drop.

If they have low ownership it's much easier.

Hence why George Boyd was 4.4 last year before everyone got him.

Not as much as later on, because there's no top 10K ownership or anything to go off.

However, not having Hazard with 54% ownership is more than I think I can stomach. He could do serious damage even in one game.

          Anyone else I can handle.

I basically agree with this. I think it was a little more nuanced last season, but for GW1 this should hold true. Though, of course, they could change the pricing mechanism again, rendering this debate somewhat moot.

The only ownership I'm concerned with in my starting squad is that of my 5th mid. The last thing I want is to lose 0.1-0.3 on a player who I hope will never play. This is why I'll be ignoring Wanyama, who has a very high ownership and is prone to price drops from casuals selling him.

Wanyama is unlikely to be a priority for early transfers out unless he doesn't play, and he's probably the most nailed on of all the 4.5m midfielders.

Most early transfers by the casuals will be to remove non-players and to bring in GW1 high scorers. Replacing a bench-sitting 5th midfielder is unlikely to be a high priority.

Agreed, Hazard's ownership doesn't bother me. Everyone says "well what if he explodes?" Yeah, but what if he doesn't? What if Fabregas does? I'm picking the team that I think will score the most points, I don't care who everyone else owns.

The only time ownership bothers me is for bench players. I'm not getting Wanyama because he has high ownership, and if he drops you're stuck with him.

Personally I think a lot of people are getting there panties in a twist over nothing - we have 38 gameweeks I wouldn't say Hazard is essential for gameweek 1 just because of his ownership.

11.5 is a lot of outlay in your squad from the off, I've personally gone for Fab and Costa instead. Very worst case scenario is I get have to get Hazard in GW3 if he (somehow) gets off to a flyer.

It is easy to read too much into it when chasing later on and you do get punished if you get it wrong. I think there are definitely times to take opportunities though and get players that you deem to be on form and have somewhat of a low ownership.

You can definitely hide behind the highest ownership in GW1 to see what happens with line ups for those players you fancy but are unsure of game time. So for example pick Benteke when really you want Jrod longer term....then just do the switch a little later.

I would just say that hazard is a special case because he's playing at home against a team who have a terrible recent record against Chelsea and a huge number of managers will be captaining him, giving him a pseudo ownership of something like 75-80%. Also, drafting him in if he starts increasing in price and shows form will require two transfers so a possible hit.

I'm not saying blindly follow the ownership manual, but when last year's best performing player who is potentially explosive and has greater than say a threshold of 35% ownership and will be highest on the captain poll, it might be a good idea in this case to keep him in your team from the off to avoid losing ground. Especially if you're happy with the rest of the team. (I'm okay with Haz + Ritchie over say Fab + Ozil to start GW1 with)

Thinking cant go without the core of Ivan/Hazard/Aguero

    Ziro, my first draft:

    Pantilimon/Hamer
    Ivanovic/Koscielny/Morgan/Francis/Olsson
    Ozil/Fabregas/Mata/Ritchie/Albrighton
    Rooney/Costa/Deeney

My team exactly as it is now:
    Pantilimon/Hennessey
    Ivanovic/Koscielny/Huth/Francis/Angella
    Walcott/Fabregas/Chadli/Milner/Fletcher
    Rooney/Costa/Sakho
