Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

Im seeing quite a lot of teams with Mertersacker or asking Mert or a,b,c...
Shall we as a community try to settle this?
Last season just got 350 but is expected to play a lot more this season.

    http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/arsene-wenger-backs-top-talent-gabriel-to-impress-in-arsenal-defence-next-season-10394015.html

Wenger said of Gabriel "he will be a revelation" and "We will see more of him next season".

So who do we think is most likely to lose their place? I think Mertersacker will be rotated and played more against taller teams. Gabriel against quick passing teams.

I think Merte is as nailed as anybody.. He's not going to turn around and say 'No, Gabriel has no chance of playing in the league this season'. At a push, he 'may' possibly coming in against very fast forward lines but a lot more likely to pick up games in Cups and in the case of injury imo.

What about Koscielny's underlying achilles problem? It sounded like a long term thing and there was a period last season where Wenger was treating him fairly gingerly on account of that.

Is he totally over that? Or might Gabriel be used to help manage it? Might - quail at the horror of it - all three be rotated?

Oh jeez, I hadn't even considered his issues last year, that just complicates things more.
So do we just get one of the 2 in and deal with the potential rotation when it happens or steer clear?

Actually I think I've answered it with a little research. He had chronic tendinitis in both Achilles. Worst case scenario seems to be 3-6 months healing time and it started in October '14 so he should be totally past that now.

As a rule of thumb, I only pay attention to negative news about players during pre-season.

It's every managers job to talk up their players & team. So, hearing Wegner speak like this is great but, until we see it translate into actual minutes for Gabriel then our ranking shouldn't change.

Now, I don't doubt that Gabriel will get his chance eventually, but if Mert starts the last 2/3 pre-season matches & FA Cup then I think it's safe to assume it's his job to lose going forward.

Gabriel is smaller and quicker than mert, but similar to kos, so ideally he should replace kos in arsenal's lineup. The value of experienced, commanding CBs like mert, fonte and Terry is underappreciated.

A kos and gabriel CB pairing will be like kompany and mangala, both quick and athletic but lacking calmness and positional sense.

Just made a post about this:

Being an Arsenal supporter myself have seen the few games he (Paulista) has appeared on. Just really shaky and uncertain. Mert & Kosc are one of the best CB pairs in the BPL, there's no worry of either being rotated as often that it would matter. Paulista will play in League and FA cup rounds but will not get much time in BPL games. Wenger's comments?"Gabriel is very talented and will be a great centre back and we will see more of him". Arsene could make these same comments about his ten-year-old grandson hoping to make the school's team. He is just not going to go and not praise his players is he? Every BPL fan should know this.

This rotation fear is just ridiculous in my opinion. Same than fearing that Zouma will steal minutes from Terry. Even if rotation would happen Kos would be rotated before Mert.

That back pairing of Mert and Kos is still very strong, I see Gabriel in the cup games and perhaps as cover before after CL games. Otherwise I can't see why Wenger would change his back pair when there are plenty of opportunities for Gabriel to learn his trade, he doesn't read the game quite as well as the other 2 yet.

LVG seemed to be full of praise for him and he seems to be in his plan.

Considering what he went through, I think matat would have left Man U this year if he had no guarantees to play a big part of the team

Plus, he might still be on Pens over Rooney

His attacking threat is awesome. I think United's possession play will help them concede less this year though, and Darmian worked well with Mata on the right pre-season. I think he'll get a few attacking returns.

By all accounts he's nailed on to start the year.
So, if you're a fan by all means slot him in.
And, like every player in the game adjust accordingly to form, fixtures, rest & rotation trends.
No one on our GW1 rosters is going to play 38G weeks for us.

like the player, but minutes worry me, didnt really understand why poch only gave him only 50 mins... was this down to his groin problem or due to using him as impact player as he does not track back enough...

One? The other? A combo of both? Who knows?
You're not going to get a definitive answer here I'm afraid.

So, just read the preseason match reports & keep an eye on the papers to see if anything's changed. Then make your best guess.

Outside of that, "Worrying is like sitting in a rocking chair, you can do it all day but, it won't get you anywhere."

                  NP!

Players who get subbed (off early or on late) are the worst.
Not only do we just get that 1pt but, we also lose out on someone else's potential for pts too.

Like a 2nd kick in the nuts.

It's not exactly hard if you have 2 transfers and Costa and/or Rooney up front

        • 14 Years

Yeah in theory it's not hard. But saving transfers at the beginning is very hard to do as value/form players emerge. Price rises, price rises.

    7. Jay_
        10 years, 4 months ago

I think starting with Walcott and Rooney is a good foundation in theory, by gw 4 Rooney and Walcott to Aguero and a in form 6.5ish mid, City fixtures turn great, United turn not so good, Sanchez will be back and Theo may not be nailed

          • 14 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

Chances are though, this 'in form 6.5 mid' actually cost 6.8 though...then you end up taking hits or compromising on good picks

          1. Jay_

There are better 4.5 GKs to lean on if you aren't going rotation. Palace were leaky as a tap last year.

I think they are going to need to breathalyse LVG before they let him attend any press conferences

I like both, but think you will need to see how pre-season plays out and whether Pedro joins or another striker.

Mata likely more nailed on as Depay gets eased in while he learns the EPL. I can see Depay being an impact sub to start with LVG using his pace to exploit the tired legs of defenders.

I actually like Fabs a lot - he always starts the FPL quite strong and has had a restful off-season.

I suspect he will out-score Hazard in the first 8-10 GWs.

Sterling and Walcott likely to see some rotation at times.

          Chadli vs Mane
Who would you pick and why?

I know Chadli seems the better value, but Mane seems more integral to his team and has better opening fixtures although being £1.0m more.

            8M for Mane is madness.

I had him for most the second half last year and he drove me had at 6.5M.

                His scoring will look like:

                1 - 2 - 13 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 8
