Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

Well it certainly is that time of year
Hours "wasted" tinkering teams just wanting the season to start

Some good teams here - im more stumped this year than ever
having previously had Ivanovic, Hazard and Darmian in squad I have again fiddled and downgraded to come up with the following

    Cech - Ruddy
    Huth - Richards - Mings - Targett
    Fabregas - Depay - Silva - Henderson - Anya
    Deeney - Costa - Rooney

Which leaves me money for Costa to Aguero should that be needed

As a United fan I always want to try and have cover, have strong feeling about Rooney and taken the gamble on Depay (if switched would be to another United player)

Silva is my big ? as downgrading him would allow upgrade of Fabregas > Hazard but as a pairing i think maybe Silva + Fabregas may earn more than Hazard + 8 Million midfielder

    Any feedback on selections ?

United fan too with a big feeling on Rooney and Depay.

I don't know if that's just bias showing through.

Infact your front 8 is very similar to mine (I have Sterling and Ozil over Silva and Hendo)
      I agree on Fab + (Silva / Sterling) over Haz + 8m

For the last few seasons, one of my biggest weaknesses has been accumulating team value. By January I always seem to end up at least a couple of million behind most. I've determined 3 reasons for this.

    1. My preference for a late WC (solved this year by the chance in WC rules).
    2. My reluctance to give up on a few underperformers in the hope they'll make up for previous losses.
    3. Leaving transfers till Friday night to wait for injury news.

Point 3 is the most obvious strategy change I could implement. Should I change tactic and make early transfers to catch price rises like many of here seem to? Or do people find the team value gain is cancelled out by a couple of midweek injuries?

Basically, are early transfers a better strategy?

    1. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

Getting the right team set up as early as possible is important. Sets you up for the season. This is why I advocate an early WC, or early pts hits, you feel the benefit from them ALL season. Late season hits and WCs have a very short burn time.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

Regarding early transfers, it's a hard call. If a player is playing midweek, wait. If he'll only drop 0.1m, wait. Only do it when necessary imo.

I've always been a fan of the late WC for DGW's but I guess this season we can easily do both plans and not have to use the less useful Jan WC.

Do you make your transfers early in the week or wait until Friday?

Price changes weren't so volatile last season and if it's the same (which I think it is) then you can wait alot longer, 0 and always wait till all the games are finished including any midweek games before you hit confirm

Agree 100% with this. Very little problems but you will end up millions ahead of your mates. At the end of the last season I had 3.5m more cash to spend than my rival without having any major "value sinks" like Kane or Sanchez from the start.

I only ever seek to gain a bit of cash on an early transfer if i have an adequate bench for the week to cover any problems, or i have 2 subs. I always suffer from a low value too, but i'd rather not deal with -4 point hits in order to replace transfers.

I just can't see them getting many clean sheets, even in supposedly easy fixtures

i guess, but thats why we go for the attacking defenders right, for the random assist etc

BOU/NOR works well until Jan, worst fixture is EVEx2
SUN/NEW is nice but hard to pick the defenders
SWA/LEI for 9.5m is good also

What are the major arguments against Ighalo? Don't see him in many teams so far. Would expect him to rival Deeney for goals and is 0.5 cheaper.

      Deeney has pens.

Ighalo is unlikely to start every game.

More consistent and Should get more minutes. Once Sanchez is back Walcott should be relegated to the bench again.

Cross that bridge when you come to it, Walcott could run riot at home to West Ham and away to Palace while Silva plays against two tough defences in West Brom and Chelsea.

Walcott for the first 2 then move him on if he looks like getting dropped for Sanchez which I don't think he will if he plays well.

Saying Benteke is a necessity is pure speculation. He could just as easily arrive at Anfield and completely flop.

      RMT:

      Fabianski, Schmeichel
      Koscielny, Azpiclueta, Coates, Angella, Francis
      Walcott, Ozil, Mane, Chadli, Atsu
      Rooney, Costa, Deeney

      0 ITB

Would prefer Payet over Chadli but don't know where else to downgrade.
Have a plan to bring in Kun or Hazard although I think Id rather bring in Fabregas or Oscar pre-WC
