Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

For a draft league (so keep a full season / injury / rotation in mind), would you trade Ramsey for any of the following?

    Benteke
    Depay (listed as a F)
    Sterling
    Oscar
    Eriksen
    Giroud
    Lukaku
    Mata

If so, which ones would you trade him for?

The ruleset is the same as FPL without BPS and minor points for tackles/interceptions (so say Ramsey makes an extra point every 3-4 games for tackles/interceptions).

Cheers. Yeah, rotation chances as well. I'm only trading him as I have a lot of Arsenal players already (bagged Sanchez and Walcott!)

Would you take any of the others on the list?

Lukaku is Everton's best striker by miles so should be nailed and has no Europa.
Sterling will get a lot of gametime too as his competition is Navas...
I'm not sold on Pool really but Benteke's another option

      Sterling.
Man City just don't seem to have the rotation options. I can see him playing wide and also being moved to a false 9 on occasion.

Also Mata if you believe he'll be a regular #10 on penos.

Yeah, I'm down for Sterling but I'm not sure that guy will sell him. Definitely gonna try though.

Not sure on Mata, he won't be on penalties in any case (Rooney would).

Does anyone have any thoughts about Man U?

I would like to have an attacking player for coverage, as they are sure to do reasonably well, but I cant figure out who.

I'm a chelsea fan so I like Mata

Rooney is an option but I prefer cheaper ways into their team.

maybe another mid? obviously Depay is popular but I prefer proven in the league type players.

    thoughts please?

Mata - he still managed to score regularly under Moyes when played. He rode out the frustrations of Falcao/ DiMaria/ Rooney being played ahead of him.

I think this year could see him back to his chelsea best as a penalty-taking #10

i think i will go rooney and double up on arsenal mids, then will downdgrade an arsenal mid who is not performing and get rooney out for aguero. i am not touching depay, i dont reckon he will get the minutes people think he will, also like you i am big mata fan, if i new more on the di maria situation i would choose him. he will be great value at 8.5

    What you reckon guys?

    Courtois / 4.0
    Mertesacker / Sakho / SUN 4.5 / NEW 4.5 / 4.0
    Hazard / Walcott / Henderson / Giaccherini
    Aguero / Rooney / Adebayor

Assumes Adebayor goes to AVL. Giaccherini is the 5.5 punt based on his pedigree, strong preseason and great early fixtures. Could be replaced by options such as McClean/McManaman, Redmond or Ki however.

Best part of the season – winning the mini league.
Second best – pre-season and unlimited tinkering.
Worst part – after gw1 when you only have one transfer and 7 priorities.

So I guess my question is, has anybody ever run a league where you can make as many transfers as you can afford, and what gets counted towards your season total is your points score per week from the XI you put out? Would it end up with everybody picking the same team, how much would building value be a factor, how much of a pain in the neck would tracking the scores be?

On the gameweek history page, the weekly scores are given without hits taken off, then there's a separate column for hits, so it wouldn't be too much of a pain to track the scores with a spreadsheet.

I've heard about people playing that sort of league, never done it myself though.

First of all use the full budget. You shouldn't plan future transfers before the start of the season.
Try and upgrade mane to fan/Silva/mata.
If you are confident on azpi over Ivan then its fine. Kompany to clyne/lescott/jagielka or janmaat (city leak goals and kompany does not score or assist much ).
Keeper rotations never work out well. Pick a permanent starter and a permanent bench keeper, preferably from the same team. ( as cheap as possible )

Hey everyone. So after messing around the best team that I can make with Rate My Team Tool is

    Guzan, Myhill,
    Ivanovic, Yoshida, Smalling, Kscielny, Clyne

    Hazard, Henderson, Johnson, Ritchie, Mane,

    Kane, Deeney, Giroud/Benteke

It predicts 330 points for my first 6 Gameweeks.

Has anyone been able to get a better team with the RMT tool?

    Hey,
What do you reckon to this team?

    Butland krul
    Toby Williams ogbonna huth targett

    Rooney aguero Wilson

I'd be concerned about Herrera, Utd's defence is a bit of a minefield, and he's not exactly explosive to counter that risk.

Ur team would probably bag lots of points in the first game weeks, but u would have problems with the three 4.0s in your squad. Too unbalanced and rigid. No flexibility, my advice lose Silva for stifling and use the extra 1.0m to upgrade a defender and a keeper and u are good to go
