Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

So, all we need now are KDB and Pogba and we'd be in with a shout for the treble.

Can't wait for those signings now.

Rooney cost 24.5m when he moved to United having scored only 15 goals for Everton.

Sterling has gone for double that money after 11 years. Great signing.

Kompany is world class and will bounce back from the terrible campaign he had last season.

If only one, would have to be Aguero because Fabregas/Costa cover a missing Hazard better than Yaya/Silva covering a missing Aguero. If that makes sense?

Ideally however, you should make room for both. Captain's choice sorted pretty much for the season.

Very little love for Sinclair or Cabaye around these parts.

Sinclair a punt, but at 5M and Sherwood needing a new attacking approach I can see him being a canny 4/5th mid playing on the left side of a front three.

Cabaye also likely to be central for Pardew and more consistent than the strike force from last year that was always sharing the points.

If Pellegrini comes out saying wba (GW1) will come too soon for Aguero but hints at a return for CHE (GW2), who thinks starting with Costa, Rooney, X striker with 2m in bank to bring in Aguero for Costa is a strong strategy? Of course means you are already planning transfers, and to get that type of info from Pellegrini is perhaps idealistic.

Chelsea is pretty much the only team you wouldn't be confident of him scoring against. And if it's his first match he'd be lucky to get 60 minutes.

Because even if you want to make a change, a 4 point hit for a starting striker at any price range if a gamble worth taking. What are the odds Costa gets less than 4 points GW1? I am going for Rooney for 3 weeks at least because he will easily outscore Aguero in those first 3 given the fact he has better fixtures and will actually play 90 mins in all.

      4. Tiki-Taka
        • 14 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

Because if you have Aguero and he doesn't play GW1 that will most likely lead to a weaker score for said gameweek - unless your sub scores well. Whereas with this strategy you have someone like Costa who you know will play and has a good chance of scoring points for the first week

I tried to watch the whole thing but it was too embarrassing. His comments all round were just too cringe.
      I really hope he loses.

He's not explosive or emotional enough for that. Klit is methodical and dare I say as Fury said, a bit boring.

It'll be great, he'll get absolutely destroyed.

I doubt it. It's not Klit's style. Points decision as usual.

Please help: Options--not severely different, but it's what I'm working with.

    A) 3/5/2
    Guzan (Ruddy)
    Clyne / Azpi / O'Shea (Morgan / Baker)
    Fab / Depay / Walcott / Mane / Hendo
    Costa / Benteke (Deeney)

    B) 3/4/3
    Guzan (Ruddy)
    Clyne / Azpi / O'Shea (Morgan / Baker)
Haz / Depay / Silva / Hendo (Wanyama)
    Costa / Benteke / Deeney

    C) 3/4/3
    Guzan (Ruddy)
Clyne / Azpi / Kos (Morgan / Baker)
Fab / Depay / Walcott / Hendo (Wanyama)
    Costa / Rooney / Deeney

    Alt to (C) would be Rooney>Benteke, Wallcot>Silva, Azpi>Ivan

I am happy with my team(ish), except that I don't have any Man Yoo cover which could bite me in the proverbial, but other than Rooney (who I can't afford to have in the team as well as Aguero) I don't feel confident in any other MUFC player.

De Gea is too expensive and may leave, LvG has stated that Darmian will be 2nd string to Valencia and I don't have any confidence in the defence as whole. I'd love to take a punt on Depay but feel he will share game time with an ever rotating Midfield. Anyone else feel the same? Anyone I'm missing as being a 'nailed on' starter that is a potential must have from MUFC?

    Lukaku/Rooney/Benteke

    Transfer in Aguero week 4

    Pantilimon · Hennessey
Koscielny · Azpilicueta · Cedric (Huth · Francis)
Hazard · Walcott · Mané · Milner (Wanyama)
    Aguero · Sakho · Deeney

(If Aguero isn't fit, then I will start with Rooney + 2.5 in the bank)

How is my team looking? I'm concerned I might be a little light up front.

Milner or Chadli (Have Hendo already)

I feel like Chadli overall but with Spurs away at United GW1, maybe l should go for Milner

RMT PLEASE been changing a lot
