Raheem Sterling grabs a goal on his Man City debut. Mephis Depay and Juan Mata guide United to victory. Rolando Aarons scores twice and claims an assist as Newcastle narrowly lose. Claudio Ranieri opens his Leicester tenure with a win, Jay Rodriguez and Graziano Pelle both hit hat-tricks for Southampton, whilst Scott Sinclair is amongst the goals for Villa.

Manchester City 2 Roma 2 (City win 5-4 on pens)

Raheem Sterling took less than three minutes to open his account at Manchester City, striding onto a Kelechi Iheanacho through ball and calmly slotting past the Roma keeper. The creator turned scorer in the second half, with Iheanacho executing a stunning strike from 16 yards out. With nothing to separate the two sides at the final whistle, the Sky Blues emerged victorious in a penalty shootout, with Joe Hart saving two spot-kicks and scoring himself to claim the headlines.

Pellegrini fielded a raft of youngsters in his starting line-up alongside a senior core of Bacary Sagna, Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala, Gael Clichy, Fernando, David Silva and Sterling. The Chilean boss organised his troops in a 4-3-3 set-up, with Sterling and Silva interchanging on the wings behind lone marksman Iheanacho.

After the match, Pellegrini admitted that Sterling’s pace will be a key asset to his side’s attack in the season ahead:

“He demonstrated why he’s here. Good players always link immediately when they know how to play. Immediately David found a good striker who was making good movements. He has the speed that we don’t have so it will be a different way of playing. I’m sure that he’s the player we need in our team and that’s the reason we bought him. Always for a striker its important to score, especially to score very early in the game. He played just 45 minutes and worked with our team just a few days so I’m happy with the way he played.”

KVV Quick ’20 0 Southampton 10

The Saints filled their boots against the Dutch amateur outfit to claim their third victory this pre-season. Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriquez both bagged hat-tricks, while Steven Davis notched a brace. Jordan Turnbull and Juanmi applied some extra gloss to the eye-catching scoreline with goals of their own.

Aside from the scorers, Cedric Soares and Matt Targett were fielded in the full-back berths, with the latter serving up two assists for his team-mates. Jordy Clasie was afforded his debut start in a Saints strip, while James Ward-Prowse made his first start since returning from international duty with the England U21s.

Reflecting on the performance of Jay Rodriquez (three goals and as many assists) after the encounter, assistant manager Erwin Koeman revealed that the English attacker is still not back to full fitness following his lengthy injury lay-off:

“Graziano is living for scoring and Jay is coming back and he made three goals as well. Jay maybe needs more time to be fit again. We are very glad he is training and playing games, but he needs time. It’s a victory for him.”

Swindon Town 0 Aston Villa 2

The Villains claimed their first victory of the summer with a comfortable win over League One opposition. Scott Sinclair converted from close range to open the scoring, before 19-year-old Jerel Sellars doubled their advantage late in the second period.

Tim Sherwood deployed his troops in a 4-4-1-1 set-up, with Jed Steer between the sticks. Micah Richards and Ciaran Clark partnered up in central defence, while debutant Jordan Amavi (left-back) and Alan Hutton (right-back) completed the rearguard. Ashley Westwood and Gary Gardner filled the central midfield slots, allowing Sinclair and Leandro Bacuna to stretch the play on the flanks, whilst Carles Gil operated just behind lone striker Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Bacuna has now started the last two pre-season matches in midfield, alerting us to his out-of-position potential. The 5.0-priced defender bagged five assists in just 983 minutes last term from the right-back position, illustrating his capacity to deliver attacking returns. The similarly priced Sinclair could be another to monitor as Sherwood looks to restructure in his first full season at the helm – Villa have Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six Gameweeks.

Lincoln City 1 Leicester City 3

Claudio Ranieri christened his Foxes tenure with a spirited win, courtesy of late goals from Andrej Kramaric and Jamie Vardy. Riyad Mahrez netted the equaliser just before half time, negating Lincoln’s converted spot-kick at the 10-minute mark.

Ranieri opted for a continuation of the 3-5-2 formation rolled out by former boss Nigel Pearson, with Leonardo Ulloa and Shinji Okazaki forming the strike partnership and Mahrez tucked in behind. In defence, Robert Huth, Liam Moore and Christian Fuchs made up the back-three. The Foxes boss made wholesale changes at half-time, though, with the likes of Marc Albrighton and Jeffrey Schlupp joining Vardy and Kramaric in the XI.

Portland Timbers 4 Newcastle United 3

Newcastle United rounded off their tour of America with a narrow defeat, having left out a plethora of first-teamers due to the artificial pitch. Manager Steve McClaren set out his side in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with an unusual back four of Gael Bigirimana, Lubomir Satka, Shane Ferguson and Rolando Aarons. Mehdi Abeid and Georginio Wijnaldum occupied the double pivot, while Moussa Sissoko, Ayoze Perez and Yoan Gouffran supported lone frontman Papiss Cisse.

Aarons was undoubtedly the star man for the Magpies, marauding forward from his left-back berth to cause the American outfit all sorts of problems. Having delivered the cross for Wijnaldum to net on his debut, the 19-year-old winger scored two goals (an overhead kick and a long-range strike) in as many minutes in the final quarter of the encounter to set up a tense finish for the hosts. Priced at just 5.0 in FPL, the youngster is clearly one to watch this season after suffering an injury-hit campaign last time out.

Post-match, McClaren explained the reasons behind his team selection:

“We had six of seven who couldn’t play on this surface, and quite a few played who we only wanted to have a small amount of time (on the pitch) because of troubles they get. In that respect, the key thing was that everyone came through safely and no injuries. We’ve more or less done that. In the first half it was a makeshift back four. We had no centre-halves, really. They couldn’t play on this surface. That was always going to be difficult.”

Manchester United 3 San Jose Earthquakes 1

Memphis Depay capitalised on an errant back-pass to notch his first goal in a Red Devils strip, while Andreas Pereira also carded his debut strike, expertly heading home a Jesse Lingard cross. Juan Mata was the other midfielder to grace the scoresheet, guiding a low, accurate finish inside the upright.

Louis van Gaal named the same starting XI that lined up against Club America in a 4-4-1-1 set-up, with a back five of Sam Johnstone, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw. A central midfield pairing of Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin was flanked by Ashley Young and Juan Mata, with Depay operating in “the hole” behind Wayne Rooney. Young again impressed on the left and with Angel Di Maria reportedly nearing the exit door, he may well prove an option at 6.0 in FPL.

Despite United sealing their second consecutive pre-season victory, Van Gaal was unsatisfied with the performance and was particularly critical of Bastian Schweinsteiger’s display:

“He was also bad. There was one highlight, I think, and that was Pereira. But players can play badly, certainly when you have only three days or six days of training sessions in your legs, and you have to play 45 minutes. Everybody can think it is easy to step in but it is not easy. In the first match, he [Schweinsteiger] played very well and now he played badly. That is also a process, certainly when you’ve only had one week of training.”

The Red Devils boss also confirmed that David de Gea could be set to feature against Barcelona at the weekend after stepping up his recovery from a minor injury that has prevented him from taking any part in the action to date.

A reminder that all these results, along with Scout Notes on formations and form players is being captured on our dedicated page right here.

i know everyone is all hung up on Ivan for the first few games.. but why is it so certain he'll do it again? Looks at Ivan vs Azpi over the whole of last season.. Azpi played a 1000 minutes less and got just 47 points less. Could very well match him with a full season of football. These early kickoff non captains/ivan starting spectacularly early etc are not destined to repeat every season.

Azpi didn't play 9 times when Ivanovic did - It's going to be hard for him to pick up 47 points on him from that.

7 cs would be 42 points. That's before Baps, assist etc.

7 CS out of 9? Then I wouldn't want Azpi instead of Ivan. I'd want Azpi AND Ivan (and Courtois)

5 out of 9 is very realistic so. 30 points from the 5 games with cs and another 8 for the 2points for each of the other 4. 38 points and he is a baps magnet and the bps system suits him too this year. I would prefer Ivan myself I'm just arguing that Azpi could match him

Ivanovic tends to start well tho, maybe that's why manager are after him.

        12/13 - 5 goals, 1 assist (2 goals, 0 assist from first 4 games)
        13/14 - 3 goals, 1 assist (1 goal, 0 assist from first 4 games)
        14/15 - 4 goals, 6 assists (2 goals, 1 assist first 4 games)

That doesn't mean it's going to happen again? If it was going to happen like that every year 100% of teams would own Ivan. I don't believe in the whole " Ivan and Fab start quickly, Haz starts the season slow" talk. On the day anything can happen

        Needed a sample size.

It would be pointless to compared only last season, it also showed Ivan's points returned in early fixtures.

It's not really good sample size if you're comparing players. The fact is that Ivanovic is a way better pick and is likely to get more points so it comes down to the need of that extra 1m.

            Last Season:

            Ivanovic - 796 BPS
            Azpilicueta - 627 BPS

The thing is Doosra, Ivan does well when Chelsea score goals so some one else will get the bonus. Azpi does well when they get clean sheets so he gets the bonus.

              Under old system:
              Ivanovic – 20.95 BPS/game
              Azpilicueta – 21.6 BPS/game

              Under new system:
              Ivanovic – 21.79 BPS/game
              Azpilicueta – 22.31 BPS/game

Whatever way you cut it Azpilicueta will be much better suited to getting baps.

    LOL

    Regarding Newcastle signing Chancel Mbemba:

'The defender was registered by his two first Congolese clubs as being born in 1988, according to documents obtained by CNN. Yet for an African Cup of Nations qualifier for the Democratic Republic of the Congo in June 2011, he was listed as being born on November 30, 1991.
Meanwhile, the birth date recorded by Anderlecht is August 8, 1994, while just to complicate matters even further, that CNN article claims Mbemba himself thinks he was born sometime in 1990.
According to FIFA’s official website, he was born on August 8, 1994, meaning Newcastle look to be close to signing a man nearing his 21st birthday and with his best years ahead of him.'

Benching Cedric most weeks presumably, and sometime Milner?

Feels like bench points waiting to happen.

I'd maybe downgrade one to someone you don't mind benching and use the money elswhere.

Thanks! I'm looking more at a team I can rotate a lot, but I may get a bench player for maybe the defence, I'd have to look at the fixtures to see who could be expendable selection wise. Cause while a rotation team allows for good players most of the time it does sometimes leave the dilemma of putting the right people on the bench and the right people in

Henderson on pens/set pieces is swaying it for me at present

In friendlies so far Milner has scored 2, getting in the box on the ends of moves. Henderson generally stays a bit further back I think.

My thinking is if Henderson matches last season haul and gets a few penalties on top then you've got a very good 7.0 on your hands. So I'm going Henderson.

I've got nightmares from owning Terry for the first 11 games of the season last year.. They just always conceded one goal and made me curse spending so much on a defender.. now they have
mcy CPL eve ARS in the first 6.. may just try and ignore their defense for a bit 😯

i wish i could find some stats which showed CS's in the first 10 games of all the clubs i all the seasons Mourinho's managed. Maybe he does have a policy of shutting down shop in the second half of the season and letting his teams off the leash in the first half

I was set to ignore CFC defence on these grounds, until I saw I could afford Courtois in my latest draft.
At 5.5 he's a good way to mitigate against them keeping cleansheets - as the ownership on a Chelsea defender will be enormous.
If they concede, well, I've only spent 5.5m

The forced WC before December is making me want to ignore.. planning on playing it around GW 8/GW 12 international breaks and the best way to make money is via attackers. When a more expensive defense becomes affordable around then i'll buy a chelsea defender

No. Sterling is very very likely to start, but impossible to say with a new signing, and City do have options. Walcott is nowhere near nailed on. I think he should play if Sanchez is out, but he's a massive rotation risk when Sanchez is back.

Does ManUtd's style of play seems to be to set up Rooney to score?
From what I've seen it seems that they play in such a way that Rooney is not being used as a goalscorer but rather as a provider to the attacking wingers.

Rooney and Depay swap around a wee bit from time to time. Rooney holds up play Depay makes a run etc. Mata cuts inside a bit and the 3 are a pretty effective triangle.

Yes , Rooney doesn't seem to have the autonomy of finishing his teams chances as Costa, aguero and Kane have. If he doesn't have penalties too, he might not be a good option despite being nailed at CF.

So I'm pretty happy with most of my team, don't think my GK or defense will change. Just 2 slots left to fill with 12.5m remaining:

    Cech | Elliot
    Ivanovic | Cresswell | Kaboul | Ward | Baker
    Fàbregas | Walcott | Depay | Ritchie | ?????
    Agüero | Rodriguez | ?????

For the forward slot I've considered Deeney, Berahino & Sakho. Depending on Bamford's price though I think he will be the man to fill that slot.

The midfield slot I've been struggling more with, depending on how much money left I thought about:

    Deulofeu
    Rolando Aarons
    Gomez
    Henderson
    Milner
    Chadli
    Sigurdsson
    Ki

Any feedback of what I've got so far and thoughts on the remaining slots much appreciated.

      Like the team a lot

I think Sakho is a steal at 6.5 personally, with Payet and Jenkinson supplying him with crosses.
(and that would give you the same frontline as yours truly!)

      That leaves 6m

      Puncheon
      Sissokho
      Ash Young
      Wilshere
      Markovic
      Clasie
      Aarons

Some of those are a bit punty, but lots of potential in the 6m section

When you look at walcotts points per minute rate, he really seems the beat buy in the game. Last year, aguero had his best ppm ever. Had he played 3000, it was a 255 return. Walcott in his last full season matched that but is 5.0 less. His seasons since have been even higher rates but not proper seaaons. But when walcott plays, it seems no one in the game is as good a value in point per minute/price terms

Bassong - Norwich will be crap but I'm sure you'll use him sparingly
Wanyama - Price drops imminent as a result of the first cheap bandwagon.

Gomis - Good player but his first 4 fixtures look awkward.

I'd agree. Massive initial ownership has to be some sort of insurance against a price drop - many teams will be set up with him in them and not be touched again. Price drops need sales, and dead teams don't sell.

If he does well it won't happen of course. If the next 4.5m Barkley or Sterling arrives with a bang early on its a nice way to catch a hot bandwagon. Guess who will be getting sold in droves after a couple of 2pters

Same for any 4.5, though - and as I mentioned above it depends who the dead teams have. He'll probably still drop, but I'd wager that because of initial ownership, it'll be the Bentalebs, Anjas and Fletchers that will drop in price first.

80% active teams is very high. Less than half would be active after 15GW's

That's true, but not sure of the relevance to our discussion. The game may be more alive at the start but it's still 20% dead, according to our much-loved statistician. So dead teams will definitely have an effect. We just need to ask ourselves whether the dead teams will be more inclined to pick Wanyama then (say) Anya. If a higher percentage of dead teams pick Wanyama, then Anya must be the favourite of the two to drop first if another 4.5 bargain comes to the fore. Of course the reverse is also true.
