After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

well I'd rate sunderland as the safest bet to start the season with followed by leicester...they both finished the season well

also norwich because although they've got pretty much the same team that was relegated and they were a stuffy defensive team who went down because they couldn't beg a goal

don't like villa or stoke...they're attacking teams as are bournemouth who are surely the worst bet of the lot

who knows how watford will play?...new manager and lots of new signings so they might be good but they could easily be a shambles

SUN/LEI/NOR all start with good fixtures but I've not looked at rotation issues

they were pretty much the 3 main strikers from promoted teams (well maybe not ulloa but he was their biggest money signing) - as are deeney and wilson this year

Great idea on paper, but surely can't base your stats and theory on one year of work. How about the promoted teams of the last 2-3 years. One of the stars on here can probably give you their record over the past two to three years versus cherry picking one player from each team. For every ings their is a Cameron.

i think you can get a bit of a feel for who is a star player for a team and who is just someone nicking goals up front i.e ebanks/cameron. it always makes me more comfortable if they get assists as well as goals/ are captain and or on penos. deeney and wilson fit a lot of those this year i think.

Possibly but many players who score goals in the lower leagues come up and struggle, especially after week 1 or 2 and people bail on hem. Easy to look back after the fact and say ings austin ulloa etc. But for every one of them there are three players from promoted teams who return not so great points. Cardiff came up a few years back see who their top striker was.

Also once they get promoted they often strengthen the squad which can lead to a shakeup, rotation or free/pen shakeup.

from vague memory they didn't really have a top striker and so brought in a bunch of PL rejects to try like campbell? watford and bourne seem very happy with what they have got - PL teams have already been sniffing around wilson/deeney last year i think? OK so not all promoted strikers come off but i think by doing a bit of research you can take an educated punt on some good ones

it's not just the various good points about the striker though...if their teams can't keep good quality posession they'll be trying to pick up scraps on the break...so will these strikers get the service they've been used to?

ings didn't get much service at burnley but still managed a respectable points total for the price. Ill happily be on here in a couple of months and put my hand up if this years crop all turn out to be flops though

well they may or may not flop but I just think that for £1.0m more the various established strikers are better bets...they're safer choices and more chance of upside as well for some of them

It is actually something I'm considering. I really like Giroud, he's always delivered for me in past seasons, but people are saying that for some reason Walcott might get the nod ahead of him...which is why I might end up taking your advice.

"for some reason Walcott"...well there are a few possible reasons why Walcott may play...he finished the season on fire...he's got 12 months on his contract (I think) and I wouldn't be signing this summer if I was in his shoes...Sanchez is out...Giroud finished the season very badly...maybe Wally can play up front to Wengers satisfaction...he can't hold the ball up but neither can Aguero

but of course this is all guesswork until Wenger pronounces

    Trade-offs

Hi all, I've been watching some of the rmts and have found the combination trade-off questions interesting (e.g. Milner + benteke vs mane + sakho). Here are my thoughts on a possible decision criteria:

    1. Which option provides more captaincy options? I personally feel that the real high achievers make great captaincy choices, and having more reliable scorers (ie not lumpy like, say, berahino) is better

    2. Which option provides a greater spread of prices? The venerable Mr March said that having a good spread of prices helped him win last year as it gave him the ability to make single trades in almost any price bracket.

    3. Which option has more nailed-on players? Given the new bench play card and the busy christmas period it's better to get more regular starters

What do you reckon? Is the order wrong? Any other suggestions?

I thought it was due to transfers in and out. Therefore if nobody owned someone the lack of transfers out would keep the price steady amnd a low ownership would allow price changes.

                • 12 Years
                10 years, 4 months ago

Price rises are around transfers in, price falls are transfers out as a fraction of ownership %age, so lower ownership players need fewer transfers out for a price drop

The underlying stats last year were a thing of beauty that if anything strengthened as the scoring rate cooled and he's generally in the top 3 on most of the metrics I'm looking at. I totally prefer the 3 above to Kane though, but would when it comes down to Kane vs Benteke/Pelle + ££, just the fact its spurs puts me off him.

Just going to pitch this as an idea.

With no 4.0 options. Is the old 4.0 the new 4.5? and is the old 4.5 the new 5.0? With so much value in the mid priced range can we have a defence of 4.5-5m defenders + one heavy hitter (Ivan?).

            I'm thinking of going with 7 - 5 - 5 - 5 - 4.5 or something similar.

Yes. Would you not have at least 2 x 4.5's though as you will have one of them on the bench most of the time? Personally I think 1 premium, 1 mid price and 3 rotating 4.5's is the way at the start.

I don't like a lot of 4.5 options at the moment. I'd probably have 2 max. With a higher baseline for defenders I'm not against benching a 5m defender if they have a bad fixture.

I fully agree…1 premium, 1 mid-price and 3 4.5s should be the way to go…leaves you more money to upgrade mids or forwards…as it is, most of the time you will want to field a 5-2 or 4-3 up front.

              • 12 Years
              10 years, 4 months ago

Honestly with 5.5 being the old 6.0 and 6.0 being the old 6.5 I think the lower premium defenders are actually the way to go. Something like 6.0, 6.0, 5.5, 4.5(2nd sub) 4.0(3rd sub)

Yeah thats what I'm thinking too. The days of having a massive 3m difference between budget defenders and premium defenders have essentially been reduced to 1m. With premium options at 5.5 and budget options at 4.5

                  • 12 Years
                  10 years, 4 months ago

Precisely, it means upgrading defenders is much more viable in the VORP philosophy than it used to be.

In the past 8.5m mid + 6.5m def always got beat by the 10.5/4.5 combo

Though now 8.5+5.5 looks much nicer than 9.5+4.5

I must say I think FPL towers have got the pricing really well balanced this year. I'm seeing more deviance from 343 in the RMTs this year and I think its great that thinking about formation is becoming another strategic point to the game.

I should have specified 8.5-9. Its this price range that is stacked.

Yeah I like that. Might get another 4.5 if I find a good prospect. Got scared off by Sunderland signing Kaboul so decided to upgrade that defender.

Blimey that is interesting. My biggest mistake last season was having too many flaky 4-4.5m defender options last year. It resulted in an unplanned early WC.

I think I'm happy to play it a little safer this year and I'm also prepared to play 4 at the back on occasion with a fluid rotation of my entire squad according to fixtures.

My thinking exactly. So many budget attackers that I love it makes a heavy defense so easy for me. I even have money in the bank I have to figure out what to do with. I really don't mind rotating 5.0 defenders at all and I don't like the 4.5 options whatsoever.

I'm in a similar boat although I'm happy to have Huth for his attacking threat and his nailed on-ness. I also have cash in the bank but may yet use it if the game time of a particular budget mid I like comes into question.

              Most of the better rotations are 5.0 + 4.5 - Swansea/Leicester, Southampton/Norwich for example. So yes, it's a possibility though 6.0 5.0 5.0 4.5 4.5 should be sufficient.

For me, my plans are 4-3-3 so I am happy with more spent in defence anyway, it will be recouped by having 2 x 4.5 benched midfielders.

I'm happy to mix it up a bit when it comes to formation. There will definitely be times where I play 4 at the back this season.

Mine was that too but I'm getting cold feet on the Sunderland defence. Its not easy trying to find nailed on 4.5 options that aren't in promoted teams.

So much value between 5-6m. It would seem a shame to waste it with 4.5 options from promoted teams.

5m and 5.5m Is definitely where the value is but I can't help feeling too many defenders in this range will hurt your flexibility going forward.

It's very hard to get the money out of 3 5m defenders rather than 6.5m, 4.5, 4m where you can potentially downgrade the 6.5m to Release 2-2.5m

Also 10m defence on the bench feels wasteful if you playing back 3

My learning from last year was to keep my squad flexible, you have to react to the price list a little so I've compromised such that my defence is
              6m, 5.5m, 5m 4.5m, 4.5m
Sunderland and Stoke my current preferred 4.5m players

My team wouldn't be too different to yours price wise except you have a 6(Azpi) compared to my 7(Ivan). Other than that we would have the same amount of cash in defence where you have a 5.5/4.5 and I have 2x5.0.

Is there much difference really when for me its just 0.5m more on the bench? I don't think thats significant enough to jeopardise the balance of my squad compared to yours.

What about the potential 5.0 MID breakout star as your fifth MID? I think there could be a few to have quite a productive season in terms of FPL points (ex. Sinclair, Aarons, etc)

Thats a different query and the simple answer is that we don't know who the 5m break out star will be. Just stay frosty so you are ready to jump on that bandwagon when it appears.

It's not massively different no. I can release up to 1.5m out of my 2nd defender, you can release 1m. I can also pull in a player at 5.5m without losing my premium or costing me money. A little bit more flexible? Yes. Dramatically different? No

There seems to be more value in upgrading budget defenders than in upgrading budget mids and forwards. I just submitted an article on this. Hopefully Jonty likes it and puts it up soon. 🙂

my 3 are 6.0 5.5 5.0. then two 4.5 on bench. dont need 5.0 or more on bench warming duties, there there for a reason, inj/sus rotation if needed, def wont be goin all 4.5 or 5.0, not stopped me winning cash m/llast 3 years in row, like most people want to use the funds on mid/for
after all a def can only get you one clean sheeet{may get odd goal assist} as soon as they concede you feel them pts slip away,, mid/for can get you more than one ass/goal or if u lucky both !
never been one for to many premuim def or cap them.
