After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

Maybe do one for the best Arsenal mid aside from Alexis.

You can include Ramsey, Ozil, and Cazorla. (all 8.5)

        This.

Plus, if I may add, the conundrum on values i.e if certain player is worth xxx more than xxx, like

        Roo 2m over Depay/Mata
        Haz 2.5m over Fab
        Kane 2m over Chadli
        Silva 1m over Sterling
        Payet 1m over Sakho

Overall your writings have been very good and I'm enjoying it. Thumbs up

It only works for players in the same positions, imo.

Also, you have to factor in captaincy.

For example, I don't think Haz is worth 2.5 more than Fab, but when you take into consideration his captaincy value, he is much more valuable.

Yep agree Acqua, captaincy should be a factor when we talk about a certain player's value.

but I think it works for players in differnt positions too, as long as it not between a Def and a Striker, or a GK and a mid (duh). Because captaincy options can become from either a striker or even a midfielder.

Says a man who captained Fellaini when he captained the Belgian when he scored a brace a few seasons back 😉

I like Lamela, but will he be around?
As for Chadli V Eriksen they both have merit.
However i consider Chadli more risky, Eriksen and his set pieces should ensure points. Chadli will need goals from open play which are more unpridictcable

Hope this clarifies my current thinking. Bit long 😉

    4-3-3?

Yeah, can be a tad tricky explaining all my thoughts on this in a couple of sentences (particularly as Shireen only recently taught me to read, bless her). But here I go:

First and foremost, let's take it as red that we eliminate the base price forwards of 4.5 and the base price defenders of 4. No Shane Ferguson's allowed aside from your 2nd goalkeeper as you can only cover, one reliable, low point scoring position with a second GKer. Cheap as poss bench? Yes! Non playing bench? Nope.

Mids! The big point scorers, hence why we've always toyed with the idea of a 3-5-2. On a personal note, I'm also far less restless with them. BUT your third forward requires a base price 8th attacking price requirement of 5m at this point. This alone shaves another .5 off your mid and anyone who tries to build a Power 5 ends up with a Power 4 because an extra big hitter as your 5th mid always is a step too far. Sakho v Ritchie? Sakho it is.

So this is traditionally how we all end up with a 3-4-3, BUT this year there is maybe one 4m defender if a miracle to rival Jesus's Easter resurrection occurs.

So the base price mid (Fletcher, Westwood) is now the equivalent of a base price defender (Kaboul, Huth). Now, let's say you have Ritchie and a 4.5 defender as part of a rotation then this could very well work and you still to the traditional 3-4-3 with that 4.5 auto subbed or as part of a rotation. You have the flexibility to grab the next Siggy (could well be Ritchie himself).

BUT looking at the premium defender options, I'm liking the look of a Bellerin (just an example) as a third or even a fourth defender and an auto subbed fourth midfielder at 4.5 over the untested Ritchie and flaky 4.5 defender.

I was happy with Krul-Elliot last season. Just a simple move of Krul > Guzan when injured was the solution. then Guzan > Myhill in Jan WC. and Panti > Schmeichel with late WC.

all 4.5 keepers. 4.0 keeper on the bench.

      2. Joggers Nipple
        • 16 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

Interesting example on the Krul Elliot. For a cost of 8.5? they got around 105 points. And that was a poor poor team and pairing. The Myhill/ Foster pairing must have scored loads too. Havent got FPL up but bet that last combo scored more than most premium keepers

I really dont think that the expensive gk is the way forward. Hey, we are all different which makes it fun.

All that said im currently on Ming and 4.0. Ming is so underpriced. If a viable 4.5/4.0 comes up then im on it

If Milner vs Hendo is my biggest issue, does that mean my team is ok?

    Butland, ruddy
    Azpi, cresswell, Toby, Huth, Richards
    Wallcott, mane, Milner/Hendo, lens, Ritchie
    Rooney, costa, sakho

Rotation nightmare with lens, Ritchie and sahko IMO

Actually, sakho away to arsenal gw1 on then bench, then two Ritchie games on bench, etc. - surprisingly reasonable benching every week.

I've considered this strategy highly, but then 1.5 mil on the bench on 2 GWs? Pretty wasteful imo. Plus, there's no guarantee that Richie will do well on his PL debut. And by GW4 (despite him paying LEI) you might want to downgrade him anyway to fund Costa/Roo -> Aguero.

Don;t get me wrong though, Ritchie may get off to a flyer and you'll be happy to already be on that bandwagon. I think it'll be wiser to play with a 5.0 or 5.5 (Albrighton/Mahrez/Redmond/Ki) if you're certain to bench that guy in GW2 & 3 for Sakho.

Not a fan on their fixtures for the first two months, and 5.0 is a bit much

    Second draft. Thoughts guys?

    Fabianski - Schmiechel

    Azpil - mert - Francis - bassong - 4.0
    Walcott - sterling - chadli - payet - 4.5 (anya)
    Rooney - lukaku - Costa

Back up plan in place for hazard, and plan for Aguero ~ gw 4

Probably a bad idea but with SOT fixtures JRod looks so appealing at 7 even with playing time concerns.

      Ah, unlucky.

Still, Huth is the pick from that LEI defense. He has this history with Ranieri you know, and I think he'll be the gaffer's main man all over again.

    My last draft, RMT please:

    Ruddy, Butland

    Azpi, Koscielny, Williams, Huth, Saylor

    Cesc, Wally, Sterling, Mane, Wanyama

    Rooney, Benteke, Sakho

    +0.5m ITB

Great side, no Aguero would be the main concern but i'm sure you will get away with not owning him for the start.

He's on my radar of course 🙂 I don't mind using WC in gw 3-4. Another workaround will be to start with:

        Koscielny -> Mert
Sakho -> Wilson - BOU has good starting fixtures

I will have 2m ITB and can easily do Wally -> Ozil and Rooney -> Aguero with 2 free transfers.

I only saw highlights. Fabregas played the first half with Remy Oscar and a full strength back line minus Terry. They won it 1-0

Second half had the rest of the main forwards plus Terry, they lost it 4-1
