After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

Definitley worth consideration as a 3rd choice striker. He's shown he can consistently find the net in the Championship. I'm happy to have blind faith in him & if it doesn't work out there's always the transfer button.

Looks decent, with the two 9.0s in mf you've got a lot of flexibility to move quickly for the in-form 8.5s, which I think will be THE key early season battleground. The main pitfall is your lack of an obvious Aguero contingency, and you might be missing out on spme value at mid price in mf, but overall it does look strong.

Really difficult! Benteke to Sakho leaves you 0.5 short, as does a 9.0 to Hendo/Milner/Chadli. There's nothing left to trim in defence either. Dunno!

As a Hammer, I think I have my West Ham blinkers on, so need putting on the straight & narrow.

I have both Payet & Sakho.

Payet as his stats are there for everyone to see. Amongst many, he had the most succesful through balls in Europe behind Messi last year.

Sakho, that is just pure value right there.

Both too many given the new look team may need time to adjust?

Yeah that was my initial thoughts, Lucy. Last year I stuck with Tadic and we all know what happened in GW8, I dont want to miss a gem like that again!

On another note, I cant see too many options screaming out from Southampton as yet, other than Cedric. Are you confident in your defence this year, any attacking options worth considering?

        1. Lucy.
          • 12 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

Mané is the popular one around here, though Tadic has risen in popularity over the last couple of weeks. Those two are the only two I'd strongly consider. I was keen on JRod until Erwin Koeman made comments about JRod perhaps not being ready.

I don't think the defence will get as many CS as last season but I don't expect a collapse, particularly as Koeman has promised a new CB. Plus we were pretty predictable as a source of CS, with such a home bias, so that should make things easier for fantasy managers.

Based on his whole career, he has a pattern of starting brilliantly but tailing off. Goals and assists in the first half compared to second half of seasons:

            09/10: 19/9
            10/11: 9/5
            11/12: 13/4
            12/13: 14/8
            13/14: 16/5

I was only a Hazard sceptic in my team because the 2.5 allowed me to strengthen so much elsewhere. Benteke is a real cat among the pigeons.

He has the potential, but it's so hard to gauge with a big money transfer. I don't think Fabregas will match Hazard either, I just think he'll do well enough to compensate for the 2.5 difference.

    Just a thought on Aguero.

not really bothered by it since most people will have a net loss on it.

on another prospective..no value tied on aguero means that u have the option to transfer him out when he is out of form/bad fixtures.

In my defence i have 4x4.5s and 1x5.0 allowing for a pretty big front 8. Sort of the Lola Ferrari of FPL teams

The defensive rotation for the first 10 GWs is as follows -

    GW1 - SOT SUN nor
    GW2 - EVE swa NOR
    GW3 - wat SWA AVL
    GW4 - NOR avl bou
    GW5 - wba TOT AVL
    GW6 - WAT bou sto
    GW7 - SWA ARS wat
    GW8 - WHM nor WBA
    GW9 - LEI NOR WHM
    GW10 - NEW CPL lei

Thoughts on the rotation can see multiple CSs there and whilst you have the security of an Ivanovic or Terry id rather spend that 2.5 on upgrading Wanyama to Henderson.

      If I may quote Evs,

The problem is with rotating pairs is, getting the wrong choice every week.

Starts on the right where Willian has been highly productive and they only bought Cuadrado 6 months ago? Remy lacks the creative quality, isn't any quicker than Willian from what I can see, and lacks the defensive discipline to play regularly as a right-sided player in Mourinho's system. Mourinho demands a lot from both Hazard and Willian in chasing balls and closing down opponents. I don't see Remy doing enough of that. He may get minutes in that position from the bench when players tire but I cannot see it being anything approaching regular starts.

As for the 'is he second or third choice', I'm with the others. I think he's third choice. You don't bring Falcao to the club to hardly play him - he's expensive and he'll be wanting minutes. If they wanted someone third choice to play behind Remy, they'd have just stuck with Bamford and saved themselves a lot of hassle.

        We shall see

I don't really think he has a chance, just wondering if he has value while Willian gets into shape.

God I hope we don't have to watch cuadrado out there in the mean time, I think both will be eased in.

Strong. I'd be minded to squeeze another 0.5 out of defence (Kos to Bellerin?) and have a bit more flexibility in midfield to up Mane to an 8.5 or an 8.5 to a 9 in response to events.

Not 100% on Mane either but those fixtures are pretty damn juicy.

Both Mert and Bellers are more secure than Shaw I reckon.

      Pretty strong.

Is your third striker Wilson of MU?
Is it worth shifting to someone like Hooper (N'Wich) who might have more chance of playing.

That way if you want three MU at some point it gives you the flexibility.

I currently have Walcott in my team, but in the back of my mind I keep thinking Ozil will be the better pick.

    Any thoughts on this debate?

I suppose it's an easy transfer down to Ozil if it doesn't work out. Much harder to transfer up to Sanchez though.

I like it, although personally I'd make minor tweaks.

      Clyne - Skrtel

      And I would do just ONE of the following to allow more funds in the defence;
      Walcott - Ozil
      Kane - Benteke

Just a thought on front lines...

    A. Aguero - Costa - Wilson (29.5)
    vs
    B. Rooney - Kane - Benteke (28.5)

Currently on A but food for thought?

Impossible to say, no one knows what will happen, but I wouldn't want to be without a fit, firing Aguero.

I could well be going without a fit, firing Hazard though. If you can compensate by strengthening elsewhere then it's not an issue, you'd just have to hope a cheaper option like Costa can really fire.

      Short answer - no.

      Long answer - no.

It's the captaincy that would kill you.

You can surely go without Aguero for periods, I am not of the "if he's fit he's a must straightaway" brigade. But there are maybe 8-12 games per season (City home games mainly) where no Aguero while many are captaining him could kill you. 40-point swing in one GW not at all impossible.

I've got depay + Rooney for now because Rooneys has been poor from what I've seen so far, if mata was nailed on id have him over depay
Benteke is cheap for a Liverpool striker and he surly take pens from Henderson??
