After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

    BloodBath League (168077-145950)

    This is in regards to the Bloodbath league that many of you have joined in the Hot Topics sections under the "Tell us About Your leagues Faction"..
    i had mentioned About the League And am overwhelmed by the response.

    So more about the league

    What is BloodBath ?
    There will be ELIMINATIONS every week.. The eliminations will be based on a criteria

    For example..
    there are 200 members .. So we select the 10 members who have minimum points for that gamesweek and we use a predecided criteria to eliminate 4 members.

    The Criteria Chosen for GW 1 is "Captain Points"

    Scenario

    the bottom 5 people are (10 would be selected..Wrote 5 for simplicity)
    A B C D E

    A=> Points 45 (Captain Points: 8)
    B=> Points 43(Captain points:16)
    C=> Points 42(Captain points:4)
    D=>Points 38(captain points:6)
    E=>points 34(Captain points:10)

    so C and D to get eliminated..

    The league will be reset and we start afresh GW 2 without C and D with a Fresh Criteria.

    CODE to Join the League: 168077-145950

    If Anyone has a question.. please reply.. I Do Not have a blog as of Now..But would definitely set one up where i could publish the criteria.

    For time being.. The criterias for Gw 1 to 5 Are

    GW1: CAPTAIN POINTS
    GW2: POINTS SCORED BY BENCH
    GW3: NUMBER of ATTACKING RETURNS
    GW4: NUMBER OF CLEAN SHEETS ACCRUED (MID + DEF) (bench not included)
    GW5:COMBINED POINTS OF BEST 4 MIDFIELDERS.

    The criteria for GW 6 to 10 will be updated before GW6 starts.

    Thank You To all for reading this.. would be a pleasure for me if you guys join it.

      You guys ever considered weekly running vote polls that can be created, voted and the popular ones displayed? I know there's a captain one, but for roster stuff.

      May be a good way to deal with common RMT dilemmas like Haz and Benteke or fab and Rooney, I'd be interested to see that answered in the aggregate.

    Sakho's record against the 'big' teams last season:

    Chelsea - 0 goals in 2 games (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: Chelsea won 3-0)
    Man City - 1 goal in 1 game (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: West Ham won 2-1)
    Arsenal - 0 goals in 2 games (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: Arsenal won 5-1)
    Man Utd - 1 goal in 2 games (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: Man Utd won 3-2)
    Liverpool- 1 goal in 1 game (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: West Ham won 3-1)

    3 goals in 8 games despite West Ham losing 5 and drawing 1 of those 8 games.

            I think so. MVG will surprise you. Johnson has goals in his locker. Ki and Atsu as you say. If you have 3-4 good options at a price point the FT rotation is likely to be good. And for 5.5 you are going to be happy with 4-5 points per week on average from that slot.

    FWD: Costa // Aguero // Ighalo

    Later plan to do Payet to Bolasie (After 7 GWs)

        Payet and Ighalo are punts for me..I couldve gone with Deeney as well...but Ighalo is a punt I want to take..and he only costs 5m...
        Payet I think will do well with the WHU Fixtures..hence these 2...
        Sinclair I am not sure..if he can nail on a berth he will get points...But I can remove him from my team..

    Is team balance more important than 'guessing' the right players at the start?

    I keep finding player price influencing my decision in my initial team selection. For example, I think Benteke will do better than Rooney to begin with but there is something unsatisfying about a front line of Costa - Benteke - Sakho. I think my trouble with this front line is, if you wanna get Kun in your team, you have to get rid of Costa to do so and you lack an alternative way of doing this. In contrast, with a front line of Costa - Rooney - Sakho, you lose out on 2m which could strengthen your defence or midfield, but when it comes to getting Kun in, you have 2 possible alternatives which means that if 1 of Costa or Rooney are firing on all cylinders, you don't have to lose out on 1 of them.

    So my question is this: is it better to look at a correct team structure and allocation of funds to begin with, rather than following your belief that Player A will score better than Player B? Does the extra flexibility offered to you trump your own 'guesses' - I use the word 'guess' because even with our knowledge of previous seasons and current fixtures, we have very little knowledge of how the new PL season will unfold.

        I know that FPL isn't static and depends who you own when. My point is about structure though - if your funds are allocated 'correctly' then you can jump on pretty much any bandwagon at any time with just the 1 FT, a point which is even more crucial at the start of the season where there is no form to go by and use as a predictor of future returns.

      Flexibility is certainly crucial, it's why I like my midfield of Fabregas, Sterling, Walcott and Henderson, with Costa and Rooney. As you say, Costa and Rooney gives a choice of who to ditch for Aguero, and similarly, I would have a choice in midfield. I can drop any of the 3 9m players, and can assess who is doing well from Chadli, Payet, Milner, Ritchie, Cabaye et al.

        Ultimate flexibility would allow you to jump on Hazard/Alexis, in theory but I agree with your 'calculated' risk.

          Even then, Rooney/Costa to Benteke/another cheaper forward, Fabregas/Walcott to Hazard/Sanchez.

            Or for Aguero and one of Hazard/Sanchez, Costa and 2 9m midfielders to Aguero, Hazard/Sanchez, and Ritchie/Payet/Milner.

            Or, you know...wild card.

        Glad to hear that.

        Last season was my first and I just threw a squad together for a ML I was invited into. Only started researching FPL after a few weeks out of frustration at having to scroll down page after page in my ML to find my team.

        Once I started to get the hang of things it still took me weeks to get my squad sorted because the structure was so bad that it took around 6 or 8 transfers before it was in a better shape. I could have wildcarded of course but that didn't occur to me.

        That was one of the biggest lessons about flexibility for me. It just isn't about who are the best players because you will never get that perfectly right. It's about how easy it is to respond to positive and negative occurences - things like form/fixtures on the positive side and injury/loss of form on the negative side.

        Using "sweet spot" price points where you can see 3/4/5 good options at a similar value really helps with that. You then don't have to re-jig the whole team balance to adjust.

      I guess so. I have Ivanovic instead of Azpi primarily because having him means that there is 3m rather than 2, I could put somewhere else.

      Kun will be a must have at some point. So my strategy is to go with Costa - Rooney - xxx, with Silva in the midfield. No Hazard/Fabregas or Mata/Depay. When that time comes, one can do Costa + Silva > Kun + Fab/Haz (will need some money itb too) or Rooney + Silva > Kun + Depay/Mata.

    Thoughts on West ham/Villa Defence? Both have fairly decent opening fixtures.

    Particularly looking at
    Bacuna (Villa not great def but Bacuna could be good attacking threat if used in midfield)
    Ogbonna (given that all WHM starting def seems to be 5.0 or higher (cresswell), just choosing the other fullback)

        Either way, I need a cheapie there so I can easily get Aguero in without making too many subs. By the time Aguero comes along, I will need to drop either Walcott, Sterling, or this $10m player, and get someone who will cost about $7m.

      Why would you want Dzeko?

      Aguero & Bony big doubts could prove a bargain first few games

        Too risky CelticBhoy, I didn't realise Bony was a doubt?

        For all we know both of them could be fit for the first GW, or maybe even they could start Sterling up front. I just wouldn't like to have Dzeko.

        Villa 's opening fixtures are kind , Ade can do a decent job there , he'll be in my team until Kun is fit so no worry imo

    Benteke - in a team that doesn't cross the ball - can see Rodgers being under pressure early if they have a few bad results

    or

    Kane - Spurs set up for his style of play, track record from last season - some nice fixtures weeks 2-4. Will score 20 goals this season

    Got to be Harry hasnt it?

      Clyne is there to cross the ball now...

      but go with Kane as a differential as many people don't own him...

    Guys, I need some advice. Is doubling up in Defence/Goalkeeper a risk? Because I'm thinking of rotating Adrian / Boruc & Mings / Jenkinson (Subject to change) for the first 8 GWs. That would give me AVL LEI BOU LEI NEW SUN NOR & WAT. Which I strongly believe could deliver at least 5 clean sheets, they're hard to predict but I feel this rotation give me a good chance. But the problem I have is, if my Clean sheet target fails I will lose out on so many points because I put faith in the rotation. Thoughts?

      Love the handle

      Boruc not highly rated wouldn't double on the cherries
