Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

1st WC after GW4 looks a no brainer for me.

    I'm going all in with ;

Fabregas, Mata, Walcott, Ozil, Rooney, Costa, Benteke.

The defence is so bad that it will be a huge bonus to even get one cleanie per week. 4 weeks of no heavy hitter GKs or Defenders failing. How liberating!

Add in a sprinkling of 3 attack minded knee jerk transfers before the WC. Heaven. Then get down to the serious stuff after the WC.

It either works brilliantly or falls on it's face. It will be fun either way. I did the same last year and hit top 10k after only 4 GWs. My big mistake was thinking I was genius and holding that first WC until about 8 GWs later.

Good or bad start I'm sticking wiff the plan this year.

I'm doing the same but not sacrificing hazard and going heavier in mid. So all in with hazard, Walcott, sterling, depay, payet, tekkers and kane

You are willing to go 30 weeks without the 2nd wildcard (inevitable DGW34+triple captain chip)?

You have all this time to plan, you should be able to build a team that lasts longer than 3 weeks.

Not a fan of your plan at all if I'm being honest, but because I like you, I hope it works for you.

May go with Lukakkaaka for GW1 and switch because I really like Benteke first 2 Anfield games.

My GK/ Def are really not worth typing out. For 2 reasons

        1 It's crap

2 That would make it an RMT. I haven't done one in years 🙂

I also went for strong strikers in Rooney, Giroud and Tekkers with Haz and Wally in midfield.
I think the jury is still out on which of the cheap strikers gets the nod.
My defence is not great but at least I can afford Koscielny 🙂

Right... Draft no 3423. I kinda like it. My only problem with it is I have no idea how I'm going to get Aguero in if he goes boom, but not too worried for now. Fixtures aren't the best either, but can't get everything. Also just realized I have 3 Liverpool players..

    Myhill-Guzan
    Mertesacker-Skrtel-Yoshida-O'Shae-Targett
    Hazard-Sterling-Walcott-Milner-Fletcher
    Costa-Benteke-Berahino

    -Will monitor Yoshida situation
-Targett becomes any 4.0 starter that emerges

    BOURNEMOUTH BEWARE

I see a lot of people having Francis because he got 8 assists last season and/or Wilson because he got 20 goals last season.

BUT bear in mind that Bournemouth scored 98 goals last season. Last season the teams that finished where Bournemouth will be aiming to finish this season (i.e.16th and 17th in the PL last season (Villa and Sunderland)) both scored 31 goals only last season.

So, based on this and a bit of pro-rata'ing, I would expect Francis to get 1 or 2 assists this season, and Wilson to score about 6 goals........

Hardly makes them good options does it?

yeah it was a bit harsh on my part but that's a heck of an assumption

Ritchie probably won't get 15 goals, 16 assists in the PL

but if he gets say, 10 and 10, he'll have justified his 6.0 price tag

            • 16 Years
            10 years, 4 months ago

Exactly, it's about the value more than the actual points. 10 and 10 for 6m is a bargain and gives you the money for the big hitters.

10 and 10? Blimey. If he can get that he'd be worth 9.0.

Personally I agree with Jarvish on the principle - Bournemouth's record in the Championship bears little resemblance to what they will achieve in the PL.

Previous season Leicester were head and shoulders the best Championship team. Struggled mightily in the PL until the last 8 or 9 games.

Looking at Sakho's ownership, he must be exclusive to this site.

its not gonna happen but gamboa would be perfect if he could be starting. nice attacking wingback for a pulis team. only remain a dream though

eh, he could easily play in the wide role next to the 3 CBs. its a 3/5 at the back system. brunt plays there so why not. he is naturally attacking for that role.

Schwarzer (non playing keeper) + Sakho

    or

4.5 GK (who rotates well with Schmeichel?) + Deeney?

That's tough. West Ham has such good fixtures 2 and 3 and I worry long term for Mert. Both would be good. I might also consider Kenks if you don't need him week 1.

      1. CrouchDown
        • 13 Years

Yeah I'm tempted by Cresswell, better fixtures and could get attacking returns, also Arsenal's defence tends to be weak at the start of the season

Mertesacker. Though I've just sold him for Ogbonna. The West Ham fixtures dovetail better with my other defenders

          Kelly - Dann - Delaney/Hangeland - Ward

Although Pape Souare could (maybe) force his way in at some point at LB, leaving Ward/Kelly fighting for place at RB.
