Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Unlike me to be so late in creating my first draft but alas I've finally gotten around to doing it. Here's what I've got so far:

    Butland - Ruddy
    Cedric - PVA - Jenkinson - Huth - Mings/Francis
    Hazard - Walcott - Mane - Henderson/Chadli - Ritchie
    Rooney - Benteke/Kane - Sakho/Deeney

GK - Any other decent rotating keepers for 9M? Pretty happy with the first 10 fixtures for this duo (CRY sun STO WBM BOU LEI BOU LEI new/swa WAT/WBM)

DEF - no notable big hitters worries me a little bit (Ivan/Azpi, Kosc, etc) but solid fixtures and decent rotations amongst the selected

MID - fairly standard from what I've seen but opted to go for a slightly more expensive 5th mid instead of the usual Wanyama.. worked for me last year so think I'm going to try it again this season

FWD - this will depend on if I get news regarding Benteke starting week 1 or not.. if he does i'll go with the Benteke + Sakho + Chadli combo and if not then I'll go with Kane + Deeney + Henderson

If I decide to get Aguero in once he's fit i'll do Rooney + Haz > Aguero + Fabs down the line

    Thoughts? 🙂

Early season attacking Chelsea means Ivan's a good pick.

When Jose goes into 2-0 mode, he becomes less useful.

Haha its true but I think their fixtures is making my decision a little easier. I know they've proven to be fairly fixture proof but still SWA, mci, wbm, CRY, eve, ARS in the first 6 isn't the greatest. Think I could wait on getting Chelsea defensive coverage

Definitely 1. Though I might consider Özil instead of Cazorla, if only because he looks more assured of starts than Caz.

      As for 2.
Cresswell will be a risky pick given West Ham's poor and disjointed pre-season form. And their opening 6 games see them with trips to Arsenal, Liverpool and City. A tough baptism for Bilic and his team.
Walcott is far from assured game time. Especially once Alexis Sanchez is back. His role still seems to be a bit of a mystery to. I can see him having yet another sub 1,500 minute season.
For all of Sterling's obvious talent and potential, I still think he's a punt in a City side that is fairly impossible to predict. Apart from the obvious protagonists that is.

If anyone could give me any advice that would be great! I'm trying to have attacking "coverage" from all the teams I feel will attack well. So this is my current team:

    Panti
    Azpil Kosc Francis
    Hazard Walcott Depay Hendo
    Aguero JRod Wilson

    Bench; Hennessey Holebas Wanyama Saylor

Now the problem is JRod may not start but the only player I can change him to is Gomis/Sakho, which then eliminates my SOT coverage! So then I thought, well Hendo to Tadic then, but thats my LIV coverage gone!

In an ideal world I'd afford Mane and Benteke or Henderson and Pelle...but this isnt an ideal world!

Good team except the forward line. I'd get some big hitters who'll play gw1 eg Costa, Rooney, Lukaku.

Take out Kos and Saylor and replace with two good 4.5 rotators (10.0 > 9.0)

Arsenal got 13 CS's last season whilst the likes of Hull/Lei/Bur/Villa managed 10 each, and that's before we start on WBA and Sun...I'm sure you'll find similar teams to combine to match Arsenal's 13 CS's.

Jrod > Pelle with the extra 1.0mill

I'd go J Rod out for Sakho or Gomis in. They at least offer security of starts. J Rod not sure of a starting place because of competition from Mane, Pelle and Juanmi.

I think Ivan's worth the money early season.

Chelsea tend to be more attacking earlier in the season and he gets forward a lot. Went cheap with Cahill early last season and missed out on loads of attacking points and don't fancy doing it again!

Plus, I'm not sure what I'd do with the million, any upgrades I'd want to make (e.g Cabaye to Yaya/Depay/Eriksen/Ozil or Ramsey to Alexis) would require a lot more.

I'm a bit worried he might play deep and not get all set pieces though.

He had a tendency at our place to let other people take some of them for no reason and with the likes of Puncheon and Jedinak around who fancy them, I can see him not taking them all.

Benteke has such great value. You've compensated greatly for the absence of Hazard. But I prefer a different direction. Here's my two cents.

      Costa > Benteke
      Fabregas > Hazard
      Cedric > Merte

Don't suppose there's any pre-season games on tonight? Working nights this week and will be very bored.

Quite hard to read be easier if you try to keep the same players in both teams in the same positions so the differentials are easier to spot

His defence is Walker, Lescott and Williams. And two other midfielder are Matic and Coquelin. 😆

For the first month or so:

    A) Kane

    B) Giroud

    C) Tekkers

Related: Am I crazy to think Giroud might be the safest pick given Kane's potential fatigue and Benteke on a new side?

    1. RATEBT
      • 11 Years

I don't think Giroud will get 90 mins. Welbeck or Walcott can play as strikers.
I think Kane is the safest but I'm going Tekkers

I'm going Kane, but I was just bouncing that idea off the board. Depending on how things go, I'll likely switch to Benteke around GW4 (the same time I'll switch Rooney to Aguero).

Not at all! Giroud is a good pick and he's a flat track bully who tends to clean up against lower placed sides in the Prem. Benteke has some settling in to do. Don't think Kane will be too tired, it's more that I think he may be in for second season syndrome. Opposition defences will be a lot more wise to him.

He's in my current draft (see above)...

nor, ARS, AVL is a pretty good start tbf, and I could be doing an early-ish WC anyways.

I'm more interested to know where he'll be used and if he's on set pieces.

Any thoughts on how they'll line up? Do you think he'll be No.10 or in the double pivot? Or a mix of both (kind of like Jose uses Fabs)

      1. Black Knights
        • 13 Years

From what i very very briefly saw in a highlights package, he looked like he was a little deeper. If he was a number 10 he'd be amazing, but then they could do with his control in the middle of the park.

      2. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years

Pardew will use him exactly as before is my feeling. Sometimes a No10 but more often box to box. I doubt there'll be any double pivot...he'll be the one going forward whilst Ledley stays behind...Just like Cesc his position will be far more central to everything than the CDM label they get.

        1. CABAYE4
          • 13 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

I think he'll be used very similar to Cesc actually.

In away/tougher games, I can see Pardew putting an extra holding midfielder in (maybe McArthur) and pushing Cabaye forward a bit.

In easy/home games, I think he'll want to play Puncheon, Zaha and Bolasie in front, so Cabaye will end up deeper.

            • 13 Years

Aye..but he'll still get a few shots away somehow. My biggest downfall in this game is i pick my favourite players from my favourite clubs....Now i'm gonna have to fight against owning both of Bolasie and Cabaye....He should have gone to Newcastle.

Should start as he was great at the end of last year, and presumably signed with assurances. PVA's attacking might still be worth the extra 0.5 though. Can become a sure starter in those games you're not quite sure of for the chance of an assist.

I think it's becaus he displaced Giroud as the main striker in the last couple of games of last season and Arsene has been talking him up as a striker again in pre-season. And Welbeck is likely to be missing the first couple of games suggesting Walcott may get the nod up front.

'Displaced Giroud as the main striker'

He played the last game of the season, that was it.

This forum is so blind when it comes to Walcott.
