Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Well then i completely disagree. I don't remember him being atrocious at all. Fabregas was assisting at a ridiculous rate. Hazard started the season slowly, but then showed how much better he was in the end. He's not superman, but i'd say him and Aguero are the closest thing to that in fpl

I think the main reason why people kept him over Fabregas was because he was playing so well without delivering too much points. I remember that there was a lot of moaning going on how unlucky his owners were.

      Ruddy Rudd
      Azpi Cedric Francis Huth O'Shea
      Hazard Ozil Sterling Mane 4.5
      Rooney Benteke Sakho

For comparison sake 🙂 I think freeing up funds in a second keeper and 5th mid is worth it in terms of how the game plays out, but in theory more optimal balance is better?

      1. emperikal
        • 15 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

I went with 5 solid mids last season and it seemed to work for me with Downing + Siggy. I like the concept of having a better balanced team although it leads to more headaches with the possibility of benching points.

I know people don't advocate rotating MIDs + FWDs but with the Ritchie + Sakho combo you get AVL, LEI, BOU, LEI, NEW, SUN, NOR, WAT in the first 9 weeks. Sure you might bench some points but I think its worth the risk

If I did downgrade to Wanyama or another 4.5 i'd surely upgrade one of my 5.0 defenders to Kosc or Azpi but trying to hold tight for now.

Having said that I like the look of your squad! Eerily similar 🙂

        1. Kerz
          • 11 Years

Those opening 9 fixtures do look fantastic. Whereas defense-rotations account for the fact that (most) teams defend better at home, attacking points are not distributed consistently or predictably and therefore attacking rotations are not as likely to *capture* points.

I imagine the attacking returns of someone like Ritchie would plot unsymmetrically and chaotically, but we know that Sakho is a consistent player (he scored in 6 games on the trot, last season?). Something to keep in mind as well.

pick a 352 or 343 and stick with it. this isn't the time of the season to invest in a 5th mid or 3rd striker for that matter. Decide who to downgrade and upgrade Cedric to Azpi. PVA isn't worth 5.0 btw.

      1. emperikal
        • 15 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

Early tinkering days yet. Like I said above I'll probably eventually cave and go that route but I like the idea of a decent 5th mid for balance at the moment. Leaves me without a big hitter in defense but think the fixtures are decent enough for the group I've selected to go without.

Agree about PVA though.. might go O'Shea then and maybe I can find another 0.5M somewhere else and upgrade Cedric

how does that give you balance? Balance means having players of different value in the same position so that you don't have to take a -4 to bring in an in form player.

So all in all, you're deciding between CDM Yaya and RM Rambo. if anything Cazorla and Yaya are more equally matched. Rambo is an X factor that gets injured way too much.

B IMO. With the lads in front of him I don't see Yaya scoring many goals! Also Walcott isn't nailed on yet.

Re Ighalo from the other page

He SHOULD be nailed but the truth is that he isn't. Watford are blessed with a strong frontline (Vydra, Fessi), so he will get rotated despite his brilliant goals/game record. The fact that we've got a new manager (again…), and a heap load of new and talented players (e.g. Berghuis, Jurado) means the Everton lineup is basically impossible to predict - could easily play with only one striker (Deeney), although I wouldn't be very happy with that. So basically I think Ighalo is a good pick who will probably start against Everton, but definitely isn't nailed.

    Really excited about Berghuis.

Defence I think. Basically signed a new backline (Holebas, Prodl, Britos, Nyom). But like I said, new manager and no idea what the formation will be.

Our strength has always been in attack, in recent years anyway, so I'm hoping we stay true to two upfront and score a fair amount of goals.

Anya I guess. Again depends what formation we play, as Anya is better as a wing-back than a LB. Pudil will probably be sold.

I reckon we'll play Anya further up the pitch this season as a winger, but he'll be rotated loads

I'm following United very closely. The 433 LVG has utilized the past two friendlies STRONGLY suits the wide forwards. They play more as offset strikers than actual wingers. If he sticks with this formation and Depay performs well in the next 2 friendlies, then Depay is a must have.

tbh this is why LVG was after Muller. Muller wouldn't replace Rooney, Muller would compliment him. Mata is the odd man out; you can tell his lack of size and defensive contribution is a thorn in the side of LVG. No doubt would he line up with Depay Rooney Muller.

Not a fan of the CPFC/Stoke rotation, doubt we (Palace) will get many more CS's this season with Pardew favouring outscoring the opponent! Good team, Deeney and Ritchie rotate perfectly, consider downgrading Aguero (but have a plan to get him back for GW4) and upgrading King.

This is a personal invitation to you.

Draft Fantasy Football seems to be flavour of the month. I've always wanted to play but my mates aren't FPL addicts so there wasn't any point starting one up. I was advised of this game in the community article and it's brilliant. Everything is the same as FPL except no captains and no bonus points. I'm looking to play in a league with 7 other players who are committed to play till the end. I'm giving this invitation to posters on here who I recognize as regulars as that will hopefully mean a strong league with committed players. Have a look at the format in the link below and enter if you're up for it.

        https://draftfantasyfootball.co.uk
        League ID: 3TDACSyND9wxBgond
        Password: ffskinnear

The league settings aren't final, I can make adjustments once we have full players. You are allowed 5 teams in different leagues if you want to play in other leagues.

Please don't enter uninvited and don't be offended as it's essential to have active players in a draft league. Feel free to use the website to set up your own leagues.

Until Southampton bring in a new CB, their defense is too porous for a 5.0. Keep in mind that not only is Alder gone but Forster is out for awhile and he was a huge reason why they performed so well defensively last year. They were one step behind once he got injured. Also, don't even try comparing Stekelenburg to Forster.

Definitely not Butland and a 4.0 GK, that's just asking for a waste of transfers / early WC on defensive/goalies. Consider Silva > Sterling, Tadic > Mané and I would upgrade Wilson if possible.

Fairs, still a risky tactic only having one cheapy GK imo! Agreed but the 1m can go a long way and Mané seems so much more promising after all the hype Tadic initially got last season.

I'm probably gonna start playing UFPL this year. Do a lot of people on here play that too?

Too too much work for me last year. That said I may re-evaluate in October and aim for the monthly prizes. Between two teams I hit top 50 in the monthlies every month December through to May

So this is my first try, thoughts?

    Cedric Reid Mings Turner Baker
    Silva Hazard Cazorla Walcott King
    Rooney Pelle Wilson

    1m in the bank.

I would downgrade Walcott to Chadli/Henderson and spend the money on improving strikers and defence

Dirt cheap backline and not convinced by Palace's ability to get CS's. Cazorla playing too deep for me and Walcott may not be nailed on but definitely one to watch! Definitely upgrade Wilson to Deeney/Defoe/5.5-6. Other than that looks ok.

For me it comes down to gw1 captain. I'd rather Costa hence why I don't have hazard. Half an eye on selling Costa gw2 anyway and going with no Chelsea for a couple games

I must say, its very interesting to see you going Chelsea-less at the back, have you even got Koscielny?

Open for suggestions, where do I improve this team? GKs are obvious weaknesses, but upgrading means losing one of Ivan, Walcott, or Sterling.

    Ruddy - Rudd
    Ivanovic - Skrtel - Huth - Francis - Prödl
    Hazard - Walcott - Sterling - Ritchie - 4.5
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

I think it's looking pretty good - any Aguero plans?
      *No $$ITB?
      *Early WC etc?
*Perhaps Rooney > Aguero and Tekkers > Deeney?

Need an Arsenal Mid for the first 2 GWs regardless of cost. Who would you go for and why?

    A) Walcott
    B) Ramsey
    C) Cazorla
    D) Ozil
