Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

yeah, he played 45 matches for Bournemouth last year. He is a really good passer and he actually played in Prem for Norwich a couple years back and notched 4 goals. He left after sustaining a knee injury.

~ Montréal is a rotation risk
~ get Target over Saylor as Bertrand's injury could be one of those that goes and goes
~ not a fan on Yay, you could almost take a 7.0 mid and save the 1.5 for doing Costa->Aguero when the time comes.

        Monreal is Arsenal Best LB
Targett will be there for a week or 2 , Taylor can take the spot once Collo is leaving
I can't find the extra 0.5 for Raheem so Yaya can do well if Pellé is playing 4- delph dinho - yaya - silva - raheem - kun imo
i 'll use the 2 FT in GW4 for Kun , i'm not worried right now

Mert's the better option of the two. In fullback positions Debuchy and Gibbs are lurking too close for comfort in fpl

Butland good value for 4.5 but Hennessey not nailed on and Foster likely to come back as number 1. Defence is good but for me personally don't want any NEW player despite the rotation with Sunderland. Solid midfield and great upfront.

If you're happy too then go for it but if the unpredictably of FPL works against you, you could be wasting precious early transfers! Kane is still a great shout, a lot of people seem to be overlooking him now he's at 9.5 despite showing what he's capable of ...

    RMT please:

    Fabianski | Schmeichel
    Azpilicueta | Mertesacker | Bassong | Francis | Angella
    Hazard | Ozil | Mané | Henderson | Ritchie
    Rooney | Benteke | Deeney

Keepers rotate, will always play Azpil + Mert then my other 4.5’s rotate perfectly. Ritchie and Deeney Rotate too so I can alternate between 343 and 352 depending on fixtures. Cheers 🙂 Will rate back!

have you ever rotated between a 352 or 343 before?

i say stick with the 343

      Ritchie > Surman/Wanyama
      Deeney > Sakho
      Ozil > Walcott

343 typically averages more points although with bench boost at some point not sure if having a better 'balanced' team might work better :S Did have Wanyama but don't know about both Wanyama and Mane, Sakho is a good shout although I think Deeney could be this years Austin and whilst Walcott is another great shout, until he nails down a role (and if/when then jump on) Ozil is safer bet and should hit his stride this season

I just think having a strong bench is a necessity after Christmas. That's when players start getting rotated for Europe and when they start getting fatigued/injured. Ritchie is too expensive to have as a rotation player.

Well with Deeney > Sakho (TBC) could upgrade Mert to Kosc and replace Ritchie with a 4.5. 0.5 goes such a long way though lol. Rated Clyne last season and a former CPFC so a lot of love for him but agreed on the triple! Have also considered dropping Hendo and keeping Ritchie.

Took out Ritchie and put Bentaleb in, upgraded Deeney > Sakho (Easier to downgrade too if Deeney proves worthy) and gave me 0.5 left over to upgrade Mert to Kosc, pretty happy with that!

Yesterday I promised people that I would report on relevant players from the Man City vs. Real game when I scored a last minute ticket so here goes:
Sterling: played as a lone striker and despite the reports I've read today Sterling was awful. He looked unsure where and when to move, he got knocked off the ball too easily and when he did get on the ball he rarely got around his defender. I think he looked very nervous - he will have to get used to being booed each week. If he gets his timing right for Silva's through balls though he still has the speed and talent to succeed at City; just not yet.
Yaya: still a dominating presence in the middle of the park, most things went through him. He seemed reluctant to shoot though. Spent a lot of time just outside the box and looked threatening.
Silva: pure class, the only city player who looked keen to get the ball and comfortable on it, lots of good movement and little end product. He was looking to thread a ball to Sterling but clearly they don't have a good connection yet - he missed his mate Kun.
I won't comment on the defence as it was makeshift and terrible, shame that Delph went off so early.
Dzeko looked disinterested and a waste of space.
Overall city had a lot of the ball but rarely looked dangerous and seemed reluctant to shoot. On the other hand Real got to the bi-line and pulled great balls back, they were more direct and more threatening (when they could be bothered!).
Ronaldo wandered about, tried some tricks and had fun. Bale had great hair!

My take out was that I will avoid Sterling until he finds his connections at City, Silva is much better with Kun, but Yaya is back on my consideration list.

This is a personal invitation to you Parm

Draft Fantasy Football seems to be flavour of the month. I've always wanted to play but my mates aren't FPL addicts so there wasn't any point starting one up. I was advised of this game in the community article and it's brilliant. Everything is the same as FPL except no captains and no bonus points. I'm looking to play in a league with 7 other players who are committed to play till the end. I'm giving this invitation to posters on here who I recognize as regulars as that will hopefully mean a strong league with committed players. Have a look at the format in the link below and enter if you're up for it.

      https://draftfantasyfootball.co.uk
      League ID: 3TDACSyND9wxBgond
      Password: ffskinnear

The league settings aren't final, I can make adjustments once we have full players. You are allowed 5 teams in different leagues if you want to play in other leagues.

Please don't enter uninvited and don't be offended as it's essential to have active players in a draft league. Feel free to use the website to set up your own leagues

No cash league, just for fun
Draft will take place on Monday - Wednesday before GW1 around 10pm as that should give us enough time for team news and any trading. I don't want to leave the draft till the last couple of days just in case too much traffic causes problems on the site

Devising a plan. My rule is never plan a WC at the start of the season. Team structure should mean only 2 transfers needed to get him in

All these personal invitations going out ... lol.

Too expensive to own at the start as 0.1 price drop when he doesn't play the first 1-4 games could be a huge dent to transfers GW's 2-4. Once he's fit and playing ... not owning him seems scary!

        Pellegrini quotes:

"It's more difficult for the South American players because Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Demichelis, Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho, they finished later, the first days of June, so they won't have 30 days.

“I think when we return to Manchester they will start their pre-season, maybe they will not be involved in the first game but I am sure they will work hard and will be involved as soon as they can."

Def is cheap though like the picks. Midfield, you have 3 players with no premiership experience, Depay prob the best bet out of the 3. Walcott's game time may be at risk when Sanchez returns. Like the attack, but not sure about Hooper

Playing in a draft league with a mate - no two players can be owned by the same player, selection is:

    1) First choice first player
    2) Second player choses two players
    3) Third player gets two choices
    And so on

who should the first five picks be, assuming I'm first or second.

I think Aguero has to come first. Then I'm thinking Hazard / Rooney - after that Costa... any thoughts?

    hello friends

I am having a hard time finding a tastier rotation than BOU/WHM through the first 8 GWs, you cannot ask for a better fixture rotation.

Bearing in mind that no semi-long term plan ever works out for me, and that I am sure to get flak for not having a FWD north of 10m, what do you think of this...

    Butland, Myhill

Azpil, Kos, Jenkinson, Francis, S Taylor

    Fabregas, Walcott, Sterling, Mata, Cazorla

    Kane, Sakho, Wilson

There is something desirable in the ability to tell someone, "Yeah, Cazorla's my 5th mid." :p

yeah the only way this side would work with this kind of philosophy is to avoid the super expensive guys.

its a risk to be sure, but I feel like its a low risk given the attacking players I would be putting out there. the problem is Week 1 saturday, first big name striker to go off i will want to kneejerk in and it would take two transfers to do it. 🙁

    Schmeichel ( Ruddy)

Azpi Huth Francis (Jenkinson) (O Shea)

    Hazard Sterling Walcott Henderson (fletcher)

    Rooney Benteke Sakho
