Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

But I will only lose ground for each point though, given that 35%+ will get two points for every one I get?

I agree with removing captains as well, it makes it intense I guess but it is annoying that a bad captain choice can ruin your whole gameweek even if the rest of your players do well

Exactly, and if your rival has captained a player that you own, but you captained someone else, then you get punished if that first player - which you own - scores a goal.

It's stupid really. But I understand why it's there.

    How's this £97m team looking?

    Panti, Krul

    Cedric, Dawson, Coates, Morgan, Francis

    Walcott, Depay, Payet, Ritchie, Coquelin

    Rooney, Costa, J Rod

£3m in bank to get in Aguero and upgrade a mid if needed (Payet to Firmino or Ritchie to Chadli).

I don't think you should save 3 million

The 3 million you use to update Ritchie to say Fabregas/Caz/Yaya Toure will make up more points then getting Kun in easier

but the whole advantage of having Aguero is that he is such a good captain choice...are you going to captain him when he is a doubt? or against Chelsea?

Starting with Costa and bringing in Aguero is the plan (from GW 4). City's fixtures from GW4 are great, and the chance to have Aguero during that run is so alluring.

    Hennessey [McCarthy]

    Kosc, Azpi, Hugh/Muniesa [Targett]

    Hazard(C), Walcott(VC), Depay, Eriksen [Bentaleb]

    Costa, Benteke, Wilson

Not a fan of having two planned transfers from the get-go. Would rather go Eriksen->cheap to start with and leave the cash for Costa->Kun. You never know what'll hit you when that GW1 kicks off.

Other than that it looks great. Personally prefer Deeney to Wilson.

I was thinking it but as Walcott and Depay are both risky I'd rather have both and chuck the one who causes me more problems than gamble on one + Hendo, only for that guy to let me down while the other smashes it.

I see your point, but both have excellent escape routes in mids with similar prices and even from the same club.

Anyone on here that paid a lot of attention to Everton end of last season think McCarthy could be a decent punt for a 5th mid? .5m more than Wanyama but when Martinez started allowing him more freedom further up the pitch towards the end of the campaign it coincided with Everton's strong run of form and he scored a couple. Mind you, I don't have him in my team right now, I'm just thinking about it but probably only after Everton's fixtures clear up

Pva might be too much at 5.0 for a Sunderland Def
      Hazard or Fab, not both
      Same for Ozil/Walcott
      Lukaku has some tough fixtures

I agree. I'm on Hennessey / Ruddy. I really will only want coverage for GW1 and GW3 for Hennessey for quite a long while...and while Ruddy won't get a clean sheet GW1 he will probably get some save points (maybe) and he could well do in GW3.

This is a personal invitation to you Berbinho's forehead

Draft Fantasy Football seems to be flavour of the month. I've always wanted to play but my mates aren't FPL addicts so there wasn't any point starting one up. I was advised of this game in the community article and it's brilliant. Everything is the same as FPL except no captains and no bonus points. I'm looking to play in a league with 7 other players who are committed to play till the end. I'm giving this invitation to posters on here who I recognize as regulars as that will hopefully mean a strong league with committed players. Have a look at the format in the link below and enter if you're up for it.

I like it a lot, Nick. I'm still not convinced spending 9.5 at keepers is a worthy investment although those two do rotate magnificently. Love the front line, as you know I'm a Gomis backer. Midfield looks tasty. Silva and Chadli vs 2 8.5s is very close to me...I'd probably rather go with the 8.5s...Defense looks nice and tidy.

Thanks Wlashy, appreciate it mate 🙂

Yeah, I'm not usually one for spending a lot on keepers but at only 0.5 more than what I usually spend the rotation is amazing.

Yeah with Silva I'd prefer to probably get him in from GW4 onwards but that is when I'm getting Aguero, so I may just start with him, hope he gets some returns in the first three weeks and then enjoy the City double up with Kun from then on. Which 8.5's would you recommend, though? I'm not overly keen on many of them, Ozil seems the pick of the bunch imo, Ramsey could be alright as well as Caz, Depay needs time IMO and Mata is not 100% nailed and I already have United cover. That leaves Yaya who plays very deep although he will be on pens, but would be a transfer waiting to happen really.

        How's your team looking? 🙂

        1. Walsh

I hear you with the keepers, mate. Just seems .5 too much for me but could well work out nicely. I'll be having a share in YYT, and I think he is a very strong pick for GW1 with Kun out. He was sort of underrated last season when he played although he did miss his fair share in terms of point returns...it was marred by the fact that he costed an arm and a leg slightly I think. I also do quite like Ozil, but I like Depay a lot as well. I'd probably double on Arsenal attack with Ozil and Walcott and get YYT. Even as early as GW4 I think it will be difficult for you to absorb having all three of Kun, Hazard, and Silva in your attack with what your TV will be and still look okay elsewhere.

Yeah fair enough. I just think Yaya offers so little open play threat (mainly long shots) that he can't be a consistent option.

Yeah Depay has certainly caught my eye but I want to see him play first.

You think? I'm thinking Ozil -> ~6m midfielder who has emerged as a gem in the first few weeks and then Rooney -> Kun

Point taken re: YYT and Depay 🙂

I can't see many 6m midfield options emerging..but a Palace 6.5 will, probably, if you can find that extra .5 somewhere. If you think the 8.5s have enough warts, though, Silva is a very strong choice. I know you've thought it out, so could well work a trick! Good luck mate.

Hmm yeah, hopefully an Atsu, Ritchie or someone similar comes out. I would target a Palace mid but there fixtures from GW4 are horrible, GW8 onwards are great though 🙂

Fowards a tad underdone. Another 8.5-9.5 in there may sure it up. Not 100% sure were you would find the cash, but mabye downgrade silva? Or could downgrade Ozil to a 6-7m priced mid?

      1. Nickofoz
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

Thanks. Problem is mate, I'm not overly convinced on any of the mid-priced forwards. Benteke needs time, Pelle, Lukaku and Giroud are all 'meh' options due to either poor fixtures or the fact they resemble a donkey up front. So I'm relatively happy going in with Gomis and Sakho.

If I downgrade Ozil then it means I'll have to downgrade one of my two heavy hitter mids (Haz or Silva) in order to fund Rooney -> Aguero. So having one dispensable 8.5-9 mid is essential if I want Aguero in GW4 without downgrading one of the above two, which I don't want to do.

        Cheers 🙂

Hmm not too sure about that, wouldn't it be better to load up on DGW players with a WC and use it during a DGW?

During Christmas there is a lot of rotation so it's likely one or two of your 15 players will be benched/not play at all

Going to use triple captain and all out attack in the DGW's so not too sure if there'll be enough dgw's

True. I'd rather use bench boost in a DGW than all out attack, though. It gives you potentially 15 DGW players and then use all out attack in a week where a majority of your attackers have good fixtures

Christ this is the worst season ever for plucking a 4.0 defender punt.

Remember when Seamus Coleman was 4.0? 🙁

Cant even go get a Shane Ferguson for 4.0 as a 5th mid.

But they still want 13m for Aguero? This is a tough economy.

He's 3rd bench spot anyway. As long as you have one back up defender playing its not really an issue. And anyways, the All Out Attack chip is calling to cover a defensive crisis 😛

Haha well I prefer having five defenders to rotate, four makes it a lot harder and will probably mean you'll have to play a defender with an ugly away fixture every once in a while. It's a transfer waiting to happen really.

Yes, but you should play that when all of your attackers have great fixtures, not when your struggling for defenders!

            • 12 Years
            10 years, 4 months ago

Haha more realistically its coming in gw38 when I have muchos Team Value and these fixtures:

            Arsenal vs Villa
            Chelsea vs Leicester
            Man City vs Bournemouth
            Everton vs Norwich

They are 4 final day potential maulings of already relegated teams

Well, from Bertrand's instagram post it seems as though he will be back GW1 or latest GW2. Targett would only be useful GW1 at the most (assuming he actually starts). That's kinda besides the point, because picking a player like him is a poor move IMO because it means either:

          A) You will need to spend a future transfer to get rid of him
          B) You will be stuck with only four playing defenders
          C) If you have less than 0.5ITB you won't be able to upgrade him to a playing defender.

The fact that Aguero is a big risk for gw1, and has Chelsea in gw2 makes it easy to avoid.
But at the same time, Walcott has an expiry date once Sanchez is back.
Walcott & Costa -> 7.0 & Aguero will do nicely. Allows a more educated guess on the Milner/Henderson/Chadli debate, too.

      Schmeichel and Fab rotate
I have Vardy--(makes two of us) He rotates w/Wana so Andriue> Wana
      Fonte> Cedric (+.5)
      Upgrade Igloo to 7.0

      I'm adding Cresswell< Azpi gw2,3
your D-line is way pricey 21.0, give or take is normal, you are 29.5

I would like to ask the question to the editors of FFS If these kinds of articles are paid for by the sites you mentioned, In the past there have been regular articles on other Fantasy Football Sites both free and paid for (eg: Mondogoal)
I do not begrudge any site for taking paid advertisements or editorials however I would like such content to be clearly labeled as 'advertisement' to give the reader full disclosure.
FantasyFootballScout.com is almost unique in that is it only purely consumption site I subscribe to on the whole internet. There are many sites of niche interest which I visit whom provide articles, podcasts, stats etc all free of charge however I chose to give a fee to FFS it's community based spirit and love of the sport. Disclosure would be greatly appreciated.

    Another World

Hello friends. Another World is a league for supporters of teams outside the Premier League. I feel we fans of non-premier-teams should be able to express our support on our fantasy team page but we can't so I made this league.

If you're Juve or Marseille, Doncaster or Melchester, River Plate or Rubber Duck, sign up today.

    Code is 632-99096

Everyone welcome! Even supporters of Leeds United.

    Rooney - Deeney - Costa

I've heard around that Shaw is looking very good and fit also, but will be monitoring until start of season. Deeney has been prolific in the champ the last 3 years so i'm willing to give him a run, not bad at 5.5m
