Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matt Ritchie

After a dazzling campaign for Championship winners Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie is very much at the forefront of Fantasy managers’ minds ahead of the 2015-16 season. The winger was the driving force behind the Cherries’ title triumph last year, picking up 15 goals and 17 assists in the league alone, and with a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there is every suggestion that he will justify selection in our squads.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the Gosport-born Scottish international. His role in Swindon’s 2012 promotion from the fourth tier earned him the League Two Player of the Season award and, after impressing from the off the following season, he was snapped up by Bournemouth in January 2013 before going on to pick up the League One Player of the Season award for 2012/13.

Ritchie hasn’t stopped impressing since and his sterling performances during the previous campaign earned him a Scotland call up, whilst he was also named in the Championship Team of the Year. Now it is time for the winger to prove himself at the top level…

KEY FACTORS

    • Fantasy managers love a trigger-happy midfielder and Ritchie certainly falls into that category. No midfielder managed more attempts on goal than the Cherries’ man (151) last season and the winger also fired in a goal attempt more frequently than any of his team-mates, registering 3.3 efforts per appearance. Impressively, an average of 24.7 minutes per shot would have placed him third amongst midfielders with a minimum of ten appearances last term – just ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (25.4), albeit at a lower level. Having climbed from League Two to Premier League level in three years, there is no doubting that Ritchie has the ability to adapt to a new division – since the 2011-12 League One campaign, he has averaged 11.5 goals and 10.5 league goals per season.

    • Ritchie’s ability from long range could be a key factor. The Scotland international produced 100 of his 151 efforts from outside the area and is renowned for the power of his shooting and long-distance accuracy. Indeed, six of his 15 goals last year came from outside the box – a tally matched by only Christian Eriksen amongst Premier League midfielders from 2014/15. Although Bournemouth enjoyed the most possession of all Championship clubs in their promotion campaign, they will not expect to work the ball into the box quite so easily this term and Ritchie’s ability from distance could prove vital.

    • No Championship player managed more than Ritchie’s 17 assists last season. The club’s number one for dead-ball duties is by far the Cherries’ most creative player and will be vital in forging opportunities if Eddie Howe’s side are to avoid the drop. Ritchie provided 98 goal scoring opportunities for his team-mates in 2014/15, which equates to an average of 38.07 minutes per chance created. Compared to Premier League midfielders with a minimum of 20 appearances in the season gone by, this would have placed him tenth, just ahead of illustrious company such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (38.1 minutes) and Alexis Sanchez (39 minutes).

    • Although many promoted clubs tend to start cautiously in a bid to contain opponents, Eddie Howe is adamant that Bournemouth will continue with the same approach that saw the Cherries register an average 58.6% possession last year – more than any other side in the Championship. Discussing his approach over the summer, Howe’s determination to go on the attack can only be good news for Ritchie’s prospects:

“We always felt that, by implementing a football philosophy that could be transferable from League One to the Championship, and the Championship to the Premier League, it would give us more of a chance. If you rip it all up and start again just because you’re in the top division, it’s too difficult. I don’t think we’d forsake our principles just because we’ve gone up. Sure, if you could guarantee me success playing a different way, being more direct and crossing balls in earlier, then we’d look at it. But in the Premier League the best way to win is to dominate the ball. That’s what we seek to do.”

  • One look at the early schedule suggests potential suitors may want to get Ritchie on board in their initial squads. Although the Cherries face two away clashes in the first three rounds of fixtures, they are rated top of our season ticker for the first eight Gameweeks, with home clashes against Aston Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford, in addition to trips to Norwich and Stoke, heightening their Fantasy potential from the outset.

What do you think about taking two punts in midfields instead of one 7.0m player? For example Ibe and Aarons instead of Chadli. If it will succed it would bring big value rise. If one of 5.0 wouldnt play he could be switched for another 5.0 or 4.5.
    For example a midfield of:
    Hazard Ozil Mane Aarons Ibe

      Yes if UFPL
      No if FPL
Both will likely be benched and come on later or you'll have the scenario where both don't play.

        Got an offer for you

This is a personal invitation to Doosra

Draft Fantasy Football seems to be flavour of the month. I've always wanted to play but my mates aren't FPL addicts so there wasn't any point starting one up. I was advised of this game in the community article and it's brilliant. Everything is the same as FPL except no captains and no bonus points. I'm looking to play in a league with 7 other players who are committed to play till the end. I'm giving this invitation to posters on here who I recognize as regulars as that will hopefully mean a strong league with committed players. Have a look at the format in the link below and enter if you're up for it.

        https://draftfantasyfootball.co.uk
        League ID: 3TDACSyND9wxBgond
        Password: ffskinnear

The league settings aren't final, I can make adjustments once we have full players. You are allowed 5 teams in different leagues if you want to play in other leagues.

Please don't enter uninvited and don't be offended as it's essential to have active players in a draft league. Feel free to use the website to set up your own leagues

We currently have Epic, Billy, Parm and Balders. Wakey should sign on soon too

    Long Post Alert

    Man Utd 3-1 Barca

I will only focus on the first 60 mins (1-0 Rooney) as after it was our youngsters.

    Line up:
    De Gea
    Darmian Jones Blind Shaw
    Carrick Schneiderlin
    Mata Depay Young
    Rooney

Was basically a 4231 which worked reasonably well and allowed for a real battle of possession with Barca, allowing them to go toe to toe. With regards to the spurs game, I would imagine Rojo replacing Blind and possibly Smalling in place of Jones, with maybe Schweinsteiger replacing Carrick or Schneiderlin. Di Maria would potentially replace Young but I cant see that happening for the Spurs game.

    Player by Player:
De Gea: Top quality, made 2 world class saves
Darmian: Really impressed me, defended well, put in a couple of dangerous crosses, probably close to motm, if not for Young
Jones: Typical clumsy but does an okay job
Blind: Not a CB but actually did a job, Suarez was his only problem.
Shaw: Had a good relationship with Young. Solid.
Carrick + Schneiderlin: Controlled play, occassionally caught out by Barca but all in all matched Barcas midfield and put in a good shift.
Mata: Great when involved, set up a few good chances but never really got in the box at all himself.
Depay: Quiet but you felt something could happen when he got on the ball. Seems to be creating a decent inter play relationship with Rooney and Young.
Young: Probably my motm, always seemed open, crossed the corner for Rooneys goal and had a few chances.
Rooney: Nothing spectacular but took his header well for the goal. Sometimes seemed to forget he was playing striker.

    Overall:
Happy with the performance and encouraging that the midfield went toe to toe with Barca, Darmian seems a great addition and in Depay we have someone who's unpredictability gives some excitement. Downside, still not creating a hatfull of chances but this was against Barca.

Any questions about the game I'm happy to answer!

And let's not forget the fact that Depay is a mid. And that he costs 2.0 LESS than Roo.

Depay is one of those few mids that can genuinely go out and score a hatty. Along with Hazard, Sanchez, Walcott and Mane.

I have to say I thought Rooney was poor and looked off the pace. But he's not a player to be judged pre season. Largely agree on other comments, I actually thought blind played very well and could start season at centre back

Depay is a curious one. I'm not sure that's his role and I'd like to see out wide running at people. Which brings us back to young. Who is, put simply, undroppable. I don't care what rate my team says. Right now he is the second name on the United team sheet.

It's a bit strange given that out wide is definitely not Mata's role. Van Gaal seems obsessed with playing people out of position for no discernible reason. Play Young on the right, Depay left and Mata at #10.

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me as this is my first season of playing football fantasy.
            My current team is:

            Cech, Schwarzer
Azpilicueta, Cedric, Fonté, Yoshida, D. Simpson
            M. Ritchie, Ozil, cazorla, hazard, D. silva
            Costa, Deeney, Grabban

I was hoping for generic advice.

I.e is it worth 1 million to have Cech over someone like Butland? Should I keep Yoshida, Would shouldn't I keep, are there any players that I must use? Anything of that sort!

Thank you very much for any help 🙂

Your team looks very good but I think you need a better striker than Grabban. Someone like Sakho would be good since he is decently cheap as well. You have 5 great mids and your not going to use all of them at once (at least you shouldn't) so you can downgrade one of them. It's difficult to choose between but I'd choose Ozil>Bolasie or young if you want the extra 0.5. Hope this helps.

Ozil has been a man on fire in pre season.

Off the back of a hat-trick of assists for germany. he scored and got an assist against singaport XI. He also got 2 assists and 1 goal against lyon today. Would that be wise? (genuine questions, not rhetorical)

also, Is Sakho a good goalscorer that will get match time? should I use him in GW1?

Ozil is one of those players who either plays really well or does nothing and has been inconsistent in recent years. If he plays like he has in preseason then of course keep him but if you dont sell him then I imagine it'd have to be Cazorla but he's on pens and free kicks. I had sakho at the beginning of last year and he scored 6 in 6 but then got injured and didnt recover but has had a great preseason so I think he's worth the punt.

It's still a bit up in the air, and I'm looking for a good 5-man rotation that can last the first 10 weeks or so. Currently:
Cedric Williams Jenkinson Huth SUN (whoever seems the most nailed-on)

                Hi everyone, please RMT

Here's the latest draft of my team, all feedback greatly appreciated 🙂

                Panti - Schwarzer
                Ivanovic - Koscielny - Yoshida - Huth - Richards
                Hazard - Mata - Mane - Henderson - Johnson
                Rooney - Lukaku - Wilson

                Current plans:
                GW2 Lukaku > Sakho
                GW3 Wilson > Rodriguez
                GW4 Mata > Yaya

Don't plan your transfers already, what if Sakho doesn't do anything and Lukaku scores a brace for example, no reason to transfer him out then. If you want Yaya, you better start with him since Aguero is going to take pens again when he is back.

Your team looks good although Yoshida isn't nailed if they sign a new striker, would also go for a 4.5 middfielder and upgrade Wilson (maybe to Sakho already to save you the transfer), will save you some benching dilemma's throughout the season.

This could work. If Yoshida plays, it is fine. I am guessing you will be alternating captains between Rooney and Ha\ard?

Decent team maybe 6/10, not a fan of mata or lukaku
I'd also downgrade Ivan, he's not the same this year, yoshida won't be starting once the season starts and Richards is overpriced, better players can be found

This is the team i am currently leaning towards:

                Schemeichel, Schwarzer
Azpiliceuta, Cedric, O’Shea, Mings, S. Taylor
                Sterling, Fabregas, Walcott, Ritchie, Wanyama
                Rooney, Costa, Benteke

Defence is slightly weak but it gives me some great options up front. 6 captain options too.

                What do you think?

I will probably wildcard fairly early. The team is set up for the short term

Am i right to be slightly terrified of Clyne. Hadn't intended to start the season with any Liverpool defense but is his 44% ownership so high now that i should really own him just to mitigate the risk that he explodes first few weeks?

That should have been red for Aurier. Absolutely disgusting.

I think it's easier to lose your cool when you're facing a piece of crap like Costa.

Thats a given but still should not get agitated like that on the football field.
