From what I have seen of their pre-season games so far, Liverpool have lined up a 4-3-3 formation, so Brendan Rodgers will likely stick to that, albeit with different personnel.

I would personally have preferred they go 4-4-2 diamond but, with just a single friendly match to come, that’s looking very unlikely.

Given this, this would be the likely first choice lineup for Gameweek 1 at Stoke:

—————————Mignolet
–Clyne———–Skrtel———-Sakho———Moreno
—————————–Lucas
———Milner—————————–Henderson
———–Firmino———————Coutinho
—————————Benteke

Notes

  • Joe Gomez has started some friendly matches at left-back ahead of Alberto Moreno but I still think Moreno will likely be first choice. Also, Dejan Lovren has already made a couple of errors already in pre-season: I’d hope that realises that he’s suspect and opt for Sakho alongside Martin Skrtel. Nathaniel Clyne, Skrtel and Simon Mignolet pick themselves.
  • It looks a straight fight for the deep-lying midfield role between Lucas and Emre Can. The latter has so far missed the entire pre-season after his U21 commitments, so I would expect Lucas to start initially. James Milner and Jordan Henderson look assured of starts.
  • As for the front three, two out of three were signed for a lot of money, while Philippe Coutinho was arguably Liverpool’s best performer last season, so they look destined to be first-choice. However, none of them have figured in pre-season to this point, so Jordan Ibe and Adam Lallana are both firmly in the frame at the Britannia, while Divock Origi could also be considered. Lazar Markovic, Mario Balotelli and even Danny Ings will likely find themselves down the pecking order – if not for the Stoke game, certainly as the season progresses.
  • In a 4-3-3 like this, Roberto Firmino and Coutinho, the supposed wide players, both love to drift inside, so the full-backs would have to do a lot of running, as will Henderson and Milner.

Fantasy options

  • Defence – Sakho at 5.0 is enticing. Clyne is the route for more attacking potential.
  • Midfield – all bar Lucas will be options at some part of the season. But with Coutinho/Firmino probably not starting at Stoke, Henderson and Milner are the best of the lot – good options at 7.0.
  • Forward – Christian Benteke should be up there with Diego Costa, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney as top second striker options, and a little more budget friendly. Also he looks to be a decent placeholder for Sergio Aguero for the first two outings, which offer decent fixtures.

Saniul Hope my defender doesn't score a OG in the final minute of the final GW, and I can finally make it to the top 100. :)

I don't think I will include any Liverpool players in my starting line up. Too much uncertainty about how all the new players will gel and defensively they remain suspect.

Fair enough, one of Henderson/Milner at £7m really tempts me though, for the 3rd/4th mid... Currently have Chadli, but could as well move to any of the two.

I hear you, but the problem is: which one? In that bracket, I'm also liking Payet, Bolasie, Sigurdsson, Ritchie.

Yes, and the premium midfield options are at plenty as well... Hazard, Fabregas, Ozil, Walcott, Ramsey, Cazorla, Sterling, Silva, Depay... And then Sanchez to be back soon as well.

We can surely make a case for 352 start of the season.

Why on Earth would you do that? For the harder fixtures, the less advanced position or for less goals?

It's Milner that is interesting me, if Rogers can see that he gives the best delivery, and offers direct free kicks, he could be the best mid prices option.

It's between him and Chadli for me, I've all but gone off Henderson and not convinced by Tadic.

Keep in mind, with Benteke, Coutinho and Firmino in the same ship with Can (without pre-season match), it can easily be : Ings on top with Ibe and Lallana in behind.

Yes, it could be, but both of Coutinho and Firmino had restricted minutes in a curtailed Copa for Brazil, while Can played every minute for Germans U21 until they lost in semis.

But yes, as I said in the notes, the friendly on July 1 will give us more indication. If all three get 60+ minutes, then I would not be surprised if they start GW1.

        Agreed.

I'm hoping all of them will be fit, we gonna need all our decent players for that fixture.

Am not liking Clynes ownership, highest owned Defender just now at 43%. You allmost have to have him, I can just see him scoring otherwise,,really annoys me loosing points to the dead teams after week 1.

I never understood this logic. If you think someone else will score more points, then pick them instead and be ahead of that 43% who have Clyne.

You need the confidence that you can make a better pick than 43% of the playing pool. Many don't have that kind of confidence.

Hang on. You're in the majority - 57% don't own him.

A Liverpool defender has never and will never be anywhere near essential. Even if he has an amazing season, he will never score more than 10 in a week anyway and nobody is captaining the Liverpool right back so it is not like a team can't be successful without him.
He is popular amongst casuals who just look at points last season and nothing else.

Wish Skertl wouldnt play and we went with Sakho and Illori. Lovren just as bad.
Not the best predictions either imo
