Scout Report – Manuel Lanzini

Last week, West Ham made Argentinian midfielder Manuel Lanzini their seventh summer signing, with the 22-year-old joining on a season-long loan from UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al-Jazira, with an option to make the move permanent.

New Hammers boss Slaven Bilic was glowing in his praise of Lanzini, nicknamed “The Jewel”, and likened the new acquisition to a certain Man City playmaker:

“I watched him two years ago and I wanted to take him to Besiktas, but it was difficult. Now, the chance has come to get him, he’s going to help us a lot as he will add even more creativity in the crucial parts of the pitch. At the age of 20, he was given the No 10 jersey at River Plate who, with Boca Juniors, are a massive club of course. He’s not very strong but he rides challenges, he doesn’t go down – so I hope he could be big for us. There are deep playmakers like [Andrea] Pirlo or [Luka] Modric or you have playmakers between the lines up front like Silva. He’s more like him but he can play in all positions behind the strikers.”

THE HISTORY

Having come through the youth system at River Plate, Lanzini made his senior debut as a 17-year-old in a 1-0 win over Tigre in August 2010. He made 22 appearances for Los Millonarios during the 2010/11 season, although he failed to find the back of the net. Lanzini then spent the 2011/12 campaign on loan at Brazilian side Fluminese, where he made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals, and helped them win the Carioca in 2012.

Upon his return to River Plate ahead of the 2012/13 season, Lanzini was handed the coveted number ten shirt, worn by the likes of Ariel Ortega, and went on to provide eight goals and two assists in 26 league appearances before stepping up his creativity the following year, delivering five goals and nine assists from 41 outings in all competitions.

In 2014, Lanzini joined Al-Jazira, and scored eight goals in 24 league appearances alongside former Juventus and Roma forward Mirko Vucinic, helping secure a second-place finish in the league.

Lanzini has also been capped four times for Argentina at under-20 level, but has yet to earn a call-up to the senior side.

THE PROSPECTS

Although Bilic has opted for 4-4-2 on occasion during the summer, the Hammers are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 for the season ahead. The Croatian primarily employed that formation during his time at Besiktas and rolled out such a system for last weekend’s trip to Charlton.

This would certainly enhance Lanzini’s prospects of finding a place in West Ham’s starting XI, with the young Argentine taking up one of the places alongside fellow new signing Dimitri Payet in the three attacking midfield slots behind a lone striker. This would see the likes of Enner Valencia, Matt Jarvis, Morgan Amalfitano and Mauro Zarate battle it out for the final berth, with Diafra Sakho looking favourite to lead the line.

In terms of match sharpness, though, the new boy has conceded he’s a little behind his team-mates, which indicates he may be eased into life in the top flight until his fitness is up to speed for the demands of the Premier League:

“First of all, I want to settle here, this is a very difficult and competitive league. It’s then about being at the same level as my teammates and getting into the starting XI as quickly as I can. I have already spoken with the manager. I told him I was looking forward to starting training, to getting fit and getting up to speed with my colleagues.”

Certainly, once he’s fully fit, Lanzini – at a price of just 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), could warrant some consideration should he live up to Bilic’s expectations and establish himself as a first-team regular at Upton Park. At this point, though, Payet (7.5) and Sakho (6.5) look the strongest options right now, with the former – who created more scoring opportunities than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues last term – also handed dead-ball duties by Bilic.

Judging by his manager’s comments, Lanzini is clearly a favourite of Bilic’s and the Hammers’ new coach Julian Dicks has also been suitably impressed by what he’s seen in training.

Whilst the Hammers’ first three away matches (ars, liv, mci) are hardly enticing, their first four fixtures at Upton Park pit them against Leicester, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Norwich in the opening seven Gameweeks, suggesting Bilic’s side may well deserve our Fantasy attention. For now, Lanzini looks one to monitor but once he’s up to speed, the Argentine may well emerge as one of the strongest options in the budget midfield bracket.

Anyone offer some advice? Currently on this:

    Schmeichel / Butland

    Cedric / Koscielny / Mings / Shawcross / Morgan

    Ozil / Walcott / Depay / Milner / Ritchie

    Rooney / Costa / Deeney

    Issues:

    - Not sure on Milner at all, but I also don't like the look of many other 7.0m mids, so I'm not sure what to do with him.

    - Is 3 Arsenal players too much? Was torn between Kos and Azpi but opted for Kos because of fixtures and better attacking threat?

    - Lastly, is it too risky going without Hazard because of his 53% ownership?

Opinions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Ozil and Walcott together are nice but Milner, Ritchie and Deepay combined are a bit punty. No City cover is going to hurt you as they play West Brom and could run up a cricket score.

Yeah- Last year when he played for City.

He is with a new club and it's too early to tell how he is going to bed in or where he will play.

Not sure what to do to change the Midfield up though, had Ayew before, but again he's a punt... and I don't like the look of Chadli either?

I think Milner will do well, give him a chance for a bit - can see a decent amount of goals and assists from him for only 7m, plus looks to be on corners with Benteke now in the box (when he starts playing!) I'm definitely starting with him.

Good looking team although no Hazard is a bit risky (especially with no Fabregas to cover that area) but it's a pretty good balance overall. I'd say Ozil and Walcott double up probably not the best idea and also what's your aguero contingency plan?

Milner is fine (see my post below)

3 arsenal is fine, they are gonna be super strong this year

I don't like having both ritchie and deeney - youre gonna have to bench one of them every week, so may as well downgrade ritchie to a 4.5 and invest the money in rest of team - otherwise that value is gonna be sitting on the bench doing nothing

get huth instead of morgan, morgan gonna be rested after gold cup

of course no hazard is a gamble - but it's not madness to go without him

I think Milner is a fine choice at 7.0m, Hendo and Chadli just as good.

3 Arsenal should be fine, I only chose Azpi over Kosc because of the Chelsea factor.

Could go without Hazard to begin with and maybe WC early on to get him in, but in my opinion 53% is too high to leave him out.

My thought is that maybe if I leave out Hazard and have Costa I can get away with it for the fist few weeks seeing as Chelsea don't have the best fixtures.

You think I should downgrade Ritchie?! Not sure about that as I like his attacking threat and Bournemouth's reliance on him for set pieces and goals.

I'm planning on getting Aguero in GW3 hopefully by either going Costa + Rooney to Benteke + Aguero or downgrading Walcott when Sanchez is back?

I am going for 5 big hitting defenders this season

    Allows

    Schmeichel/ Fabianski

    Clyne Ivan Mert Azpilicueta Koscielny

    Silva Ozil Hazard

Rooney (Wilson and Deeney rotating home and away)

    Subs: Barry, Wanyama

    1. Allows flexibility.
    2. Can bring in Henderson for Barry if I downgrade Hazard but with over 50% ownership and half of that sticking the armband on him he is a must really not to lose ground.

It's bold! Wierdly doesn;t look that bad to me actually, the double-double of Chelski and Arsenal defenders means some weeks you'll smash it and some weeks you'll divebomb depending on who gets clean sheets... Get ready for a rollercoaster ride haha! I like!

I dont intend to. I am keeping them for the season.

I can get Augerio in for Rooney simply by downgrading Hazard to Fabregas.

I am keeping a 5-4-1 for the season.

Last time I tried it I finished 389th in the World so it's worth a punt.

Hey guys, my team is shaping up very well but just wondering what your opinions of it are?

    Butland - Schmeichel
    Clyne - Azpi - Cedric - Huth - Targett
    Hazard - Sterling - Ozil - Ritchie - Johnson(Norwich)
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

Very happy with my current defense, will wait and see how Southampton start before changing it, the midfield is ok but starting Ritchie may become a problem with 3 at the back and very happy with my strike force, except for Benteke. Unsure how he will adapt to a new style of play at Liverpool. What are your suggestions? Got nothing ITB, some help would be greatly appreciated!

Looks good to me! My only concern would be Targett at 4.0m - not the way I'd go as I don't like having players that won't play... Otherwise Attack looks dangerous, midfield has good coverage and defence looks good as well!

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Arsenal's pre season form, the wealth of options in midfield plus their kind early fixture run have prompted me to double up on Arsenal's attacking assets in my draft Gameweek 1 side in FPL.

For me Walcott and Ozil are amongst many stand out picks. Walcott offers that explosive quality, plus he can score if he starts on the bench. Ozil looks to be the player Arsenal sought to sign, and looks primed for assists.

Who else is doubling up on Arsenal mids/fwds? If so who are your top contenders? If not, why not - is it too much coverage or is the threat of rotation too great?

I am tripling up on them with Mert, Kos and Ozil.

I am doubling down on Chelsea and Arsenal Defences this year as I expect Czech to be the difference for Arsenal.

Ramsey is a much bigger goal threat than Ozil - the last two seasons have proven that. He is a much better pick. In fact out of Caz, Ramsey and Ozil, I would put Ozil last.

I'm amazed every season everyone overlooks giroud. Wen he plays he scores and wenger seems to love him. If u look at his actual minutes last season due to injury he still made up alot of points! And with all feeding he's gonna get.... well he goes straight in my basket.

Any reasons people are overlooking him?

I got him at the start of last season and he was terrible. I had him at the end of last season and he lost his place. Now this season he's even more expensive and all Arsenal's goal scoring mids are fit. That's why I'm overlooking him. I think the last point is probably why many others are too.

I see ur point... but if we look at the underlying stats.... he had a mere 21 appearances last season due to injury yet still scored 14 goals and provided 3 assists. That's pretty good going. I'm not sure he lost his place in starting team? Wasn't he serving his red card suspension?

And to add his conversion rate was 24.6% last season. 1 in 4 shots he scores..... I like those odds at a mere 9 Mil.

He had an average of (0.68) goals per game across all competitions which was only bettered by aguero (0.69). Kane sat at 0.64 pg and Costa 0.52.

With that in mind given a good streak of game time he's a better bargain then kane or Costa.

So basically he's averaging a goal every 96 mins.

I always have kept the faith in him and have been rewarded. I am going to stick with him now.

All I'm saying is he is Def worth consideration with the rest of them.

Ramsey and Caz and Wilshere will be fighting for that CM berth where they all play there best football, and will not score that we'll from the wing. Also, even with Sanchez and Welbeck out in the short term, they may not even play on the wing if they aren't in CM (Ox, Walcott {assuming he's not up front which is a possibility}, as well as Sanchez and Welbeck within a few weeks). Özil and Coquelin are the only nailed on arsenal midfielders/strikers at this point in time. He's also been the most consistent in pre season, being involved in goals almost every game whereas the other's only are involved in a couple games. The way Wenger talks about Santi and the way he is playing should assure him that CM role. Though there will be rotation, he will probably play there most games to start the season. Özil will always play CAM and IMO Ox should definitely be a starter in any team, so looks like Ramsey will be pushed out wide to start, although Wenger could be ballsy and play Monreal on the left like I have said he should so many times (mostly 3 years ago). COMMUNITY SHIELD WILL CLARIFY HIS CHOICES

In my assumption that Ramsey will play wide, it's implied Walcott would play up front. If Giroud plays, I can't see ramsey getting into the team other than through rotation

Ozil for sure but still deciding who else to get. Walcott, Giroud and Bellerin are the contenders. Ideally I want a player who will stick around in the first team and they all have question marks.

I don't understand the Ozil love - in the short time Ramsey was fit last season he was so much more threatening - even from RW. Don't forget in the final GW he hit the post twice after coming off the bench on 70 mins - has Ozil ever looked that threatening?

Ozil is a slight gamble in that I think he's set for a much improved season. I'm using foresight rather than hindsight on this one. I'm a big Ramsey fan but mainly when he's playing as a CM. I'm not sure how often that will happen this season especially with so much competition. Ozil at least is nailed on.

I understand that - but you have to remember than when Ramsey was fit last season he was pretty much nailed on in that front 3 (ahead of Theo). In fact, I thought he was ARS best player in the last 10 GW - in the Man Utd away match he was brilliant.

I reckon in Arsene's mind he'll best looking to rest Caz (slotting Rambo in the double pivot) for the hard away games because against Utd he was completely dominated by Fellaini and Blind.

I think Ramsey could become one of the best CM's in the world if he's given more game time there but out on the wing he isn't as influential despite still being a very good player.

Just for reference its also useful to not the PPG.

              Ozil 4.7
              Ramsey 4.0

This is slightly skewed - Ozil came back from injury halfway through the season, and it was in this half of the season that the majority of Arsenals clean sheets came from, so his PPG benefitted more from CS points, whereas Ramsey was fit all season.

I don't see how a handful of clean sheet points dramatically change the outlook. Ozil comfortably beats Ramsey on PPG

I have Koscielny, Walcott and Ozil - I honestly feel that this will be Theo's season if he stays injury free.

Ozil I am hoping will score more this year as well, but I only got him over Fabregas because of the 0.5m saving.

Koscielny I am definitely looking to keep all season.

I think the Arsenal mid points will be spread too much, I can see Ozil, Walcott, Ramsey, Caz all getting 100+ points but with Sanchez getting the majority and only so many to go round I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Jordan Henderson outscores them all again.

Still haven't revisited my initial draft from a few weeks ago but that just has Ozil from the Arsenal attack. As we all know, a fit and nailed on Walcott is about as good as it gets when it comes to fantasy assets - I just can't decide if that's which Walcott we've got this season...

Going by their pre-season form and Wenger challenging the midfield for more goals I reckon we would see alot of goals from arsenal this season.

I don't think that's right Doos, because they don't have to score every week to be good picks. If they each scored in alternate gameweeks, they'd quickly be top of the rankings.

Haz and Fab were in the top few mids last season for a long spell up to Christmas. The season before, Suarez and Sturridge were an extremely viable double-up.

Walcott is the best for me, may captain him GW1. Wish I could fit in a second....

      Hazard Walcott Milner Mane

With 50% goal involvement, Mane should be in the baps frequently. So I prioritise him over a second Arsenal mid atm. That man(e) is a goal machine.

Koscielny and Cazorla are the ones I have gone for.

Why didn't I choose Walcott? Well valued at 9.0 he's a huge rotation risk and I like players to be full on starters. For 0.5 cheaper I am happy to opt for Cazorla who I believe is nailed on if the worst comes to worst and Cazorla does not play the community shield I can go for Ramsey who I put ahead of Ozil.

I've already figured out a way to Aguero in with Hazard so I am unable to spend more cash.

I am doing the exact same thing with the same 2 mids.Ozil should be playing in his favourite no 10 slot and have a feeling he will step up this season.I feel it's worth the slight gamble on Walcott due to his potential explosiveness and the fact it's a make or break season for him.He can easily be downgraded if it doesn't work out.Doubts over Ramsey's role is the only thing that puts me off him at the mo.

Arsenal are a watching brief for me - Charity Shield will maybe give an insight into starting XI. Total embarrassment of riches. I only have Mert for now as I think he is well priced, fairly nailed on and maybe due some more attacking returns.

Ozil tailed off last season and cost me a bit - but I think is a different player early doors. Will be really watching Theo - don't need an excuse to get him! The one that interests me is Wiltshire and where he will play. Could easily become part of a power 5 at some point.

At the moment its Ozil & Caz for me but that could change, depends on Walcotts game time and performance in the CS match. At the back I've opted for Cech as he's nailed on and cheaper than Kos

If you are doubling up, I think you have the luxury to go for Walcott since you already have a safe choice as well so Walcott and Ramsey/Ozil/Cazorla for me. If you are only going for 1, then Walcott is too risky.

      Deciding teams on pre season.....
I've always felt pre season is a terrible way to decide ur teams. Take man u last season.... they had an amazing pre season then flopped the first load of gw's.
Teams player lesser teams or teams that are experimenting new players and formations.... so outcomes can be misleading. City's 8 nil win... so tons 10 nil win.... this doesn't truly reflect the players form but more a fact that added a couple of easy goals.... jus like sterling's double and now everyone jumping on him....
Anyone agree or disagree and reasons?

Hmm I'm not sure though. Don't like starting with a non-established EPL player. Ivanovic is a gun & was in my first draft & last so no can do i'm afraid.

Too risky to go with this due to "nailedonness"?

    Pants (4.0)

    Ivan Kos Shaw (Bassong, Targett)

    Depay Ozil Tadic Walcott Young

    Benteke Costa (C) (Deeney)

Targett is under immense pressure from Bertrand, who's posted on his social media accounts that he is ahead of schedule fitness wise. Screams early mistake to me.

Young will get minutes, probably from the bench. Depay has been signed to be a far more effective LW replacement. You're wasting £1.5 having him there over a cheaper £4.5 and that money could be spread nicely in your defence or midfield.

Walcott is tempting, though not certain of starts.

Walcott for at least the first few weeks, then can switch to Sterling when City's fixtures improve.

Dropping some statistics regarding attacking mid and forw by comparing points per 100 min and their costs. Based on last seasons walcott's pp100m number really stands out followed by the ones you would expect. When taking cost in to account Walcott is still supreme followed by good value for Milner, Sakho, Chadil and Mane. Sterling and Rooney is at the bottom indicating that they must really outperform them selves from last season to justify their high price. Personally I will take my risk with walcott and gamble with sterling guessing he will score more when he is teamed up with Silva and Aguero.

      Player £ pp 100min pp 100min/£
      Walcott 9 11.4 1.26
      Aguero 13 8.5 0.65
      Kane 9.5 7.4 0.78
      Costa 11 7.3 0.66
      Sanches 11 7 0.64
      Hazard 11.5 6.9 0.6
      Chadil 7 6.6 0.84
      Silva 10 6.5 0.65
      Giroud 9 6.4 0.71
      Mane 8 6.4 0.80
      milner 7 6.1 0.87
      Fabregas 9 5.7 0.63
      Sakho 6.5 5.6 0.86
      Carzola 8.5 5.6 0.66
      Özil 8.5 5.5 0.65
      Sterling 9 5.1 0.57
      Rooney 10.5 4.6 0.44

Those are very interesting stats. Obviously Wayne seems to be ready to start the season as the main man upfront, so if that were to carry on surely he will improve points wise. Will try him out for the first few weeks till the deadline. Only problem with Sterling too is fixtures, but at the end of the day City can outscore anyone on their day. Thank you for the stats and advice, they help alot!

Tinkering done and I finally found a way to get Aguero in.

    Stekelenburg Ruddy
    Ivanovic Koscielny Huth Williams Baker
    Hazard Cazorla Mane Chadili Westwood
    Rooney Benteke Wilson

Downgrading Mane to a 5.5 after his Watford game gives me a 2.5 ITB.
    Rooney to Aguero.

    38 game Goalkeeper rotation.
Ivanovic and Koscielny are my premiums.
    Williams and Huth are rotating.
Baker has a good chance to play if Clark joins WBA (4.0) but I highly doubt it.
Mane to cover for Southampton's good run of fixtures.

    How does it look? 🙂

        Rooney (GW4-GW12)
        Swansea
        Liverpool
        Southampton
        Sunderland
        Arsenal
        Everton
        Manchester City
        Crystal Palace
        West Brom

        Aguero (GW4-GW12)
        Watford
        Crystal Palace
        West Ham
        Spurs
        Newcastle
        Bournemouth
        Manchester United
        Norwich
        Aston Villa

I can honestly see Aguero scoring more, Rooney exploding will be rare but common for Aguero.

I quite like it. But I wouldn't spend 9.5 on rotating keepers, I have was to get a 5.0 keeper, I'd just play him every week

    Costa...Rooney...Lukaku

    Schwarzer..Prodl..Baker..Wanyama

    Guys,

Is there anyway to pull up league standings from last year? I need to see who was in a league I was running and what position everyone finished.

Now when I login it only shows me who will be added to this particular league after the next point updates.

    Too late? 🙁

Too late. You'd need a screenshot from last season now.

Alternatively, if you know everyone who was in the league last season you can check their history for their overall rank last season and derive your minileague standings from that.

      Ivan/Mata/Yaya with .5

Happy with my team.. Only other choice was to downgrade one of Lukaku/Benteke to a cheapie now and leave the cash for Aguero but seems stupid.. Hoping I can bag some goals from them 2 first 2 GWs before thinking about Aguero.

    Ruddy (Butland)

Merte - Huth - Mings (Rose) (Jenkinson)

    Hazard - Ozil - Wal(c)ott - Ritchie (Wanyama)

    Lukaku - Rooney - Benteke

Hey guys! Think I have found the majority of my starting line up! Just can't deicde on the final touches :/ 1 or 2?

    1)Butland
    Azpil / Huth / FRANCIS
    HAZARD / Ozil / Sterling / Henderson
    Ronney / Costa / SAHKO

    or

    2) Butland
    Azpil / Huth / CEDRIC
    FABREGAS / Ozil / Sterling / Henderson
    Ronney / Costa / PELLE/LUKAKU

Can't deicide whether it's better to downgrade hazard to fab, but it makes the team look so much better!! Thoughts?
