Despite guiding Tottenham to a sixth place slot in 2013/14 after replacing Andre Villas-Boas as the Tottenham manager, Tim Sherwood wasn’t offered the Spurs job on a permanent basis, with chairman Daniel Levy instead opting for Southampton’s Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine arrived at White Hart Lane having led the Saints to an eighth place finish, and immediately went about adding to his squad, with Ben Davies, Michel Vorm, Federico Fazio, Eric Dier and Benjamin Stambouli all joining during the summer transfer window. There were plenty of departures too, with Michael Dawson, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Sandro among the big names to leave.

In this members article, we take an in-depth look at Pochettino’s first season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators as Tottenham recorded a fifth place finish in the Premier League.

    Why get Azpilicueta over Courtois?
    Please discuss.

Azpilicueta's attacking returns aren't great. Because he has such a good defence in front of him Courtois' save points aren't great either but no worse than Azpilicueta 's attacking points.

Courtois won't be rotated, Azpilicueta might be.

    Courtois is 0.5m cheaper.

With a 4.0m non-playing 2nd keeper that could turn Deeney into Sakho. What do ye think?

Azpi can't be rotated. Luis is gone. And Azpi will get more BPS and maybe the rare assist

Because cheaper keepers are much better value than expensive keepers.

Worked not to bad for me last season with De Gea. No need to decide between 2 keepers each week.

This. Stop comparing players by teams, you need to think about comparisons by position.

yeah it shouldn't come down to Courtois vs Azpi. Should be Courtois vs other GK's..

Not in this case. Chelsea have best chance of keeping more CS than any other team. If you had Sunderland and Norwich keepers they prob will have less CS than Chelsea because both keepers could make 2 CS in same GW. The deciding which keeper before last season used to wreck my head. More often my 'form' keeper conceded when my benched one had a CS!

Pretty good point on fairness, but Azpi will pick up some bonus points that courtois wont?

He definitely will. A class defensive full back. Just frees up a few quid for me elsewhere.

Good points. I agree but I reckon, like the majority here, that Azpi will pick up a lot of bonus points like last season. I think thats the difference.

This is something I always think about when defenders are similar priced to keepers.

If you add Cech point onto Courtios last season he would have amassed more points than Azpi, but I think with Luis gone theres less chance of rotation (until they buy a new left back)

Its a tough one that always gets me head scratching.

OK A bit late to the party. This is my first attempt without seeing any other teams. Do we have a standard template team yet and what does it look like?

    Fabs

    O’Shea, Azpi, Cedric

    Fabregas, Sterling, Carzola, Chadli

    Tekkers, Rooney, Kane

    (Myhill, Wanyama, Saylor, Targett)

Defence a bit light weight and no Haz or Aguero is a bit worrying

oh and I have 0.5 in the bag too

It's not the answer you're looking for, but neither IMO. Depay has just been confirmed as playing in the hole behind Rooney in a 433. I'd prefer him, if not, Silva is worth the extra £1m.

I'm definitly considering Depay, but as I have Rooney up top, it seems a bit like overkill. Will watch Depay closely the first fixtures to make up my mind 🙂

Walcott, just in case. I've decided he's too dangerous to ignore. I also like that he provides an easy route to Sterling, and like you say there's no rush for him yet because of the fixtures.

How about this for a team where you have the option of playing Wilson or Siggy depending upon fixtures. Or is it just a touch lightweight?

    Butland-Speroni
    Mertesacker-Cedric - Lescott - Mings - Prodl
    Sterling - Walcott - Hazard - Mane - Siggy
    Kane - Sakho - Wilson

My thinking being that I just don't fancy many of the forward options off the bat. I will downgrade a mid to afford Aguero at some point. Ideally I would have had Depay where Siggy is but by saving the money it allowed me to swap Fabregas to Hazard.

I'm getting Siggy, he's nailed on for 150pts (barring injury) and due to the spread of Arsenal points I'd be surprised to see any of their 8.5s justify the extra million over him.

Can't fault the logic, but I couldn't bring myself to splash 7.5 on Siggy when Ki & Shelvey are only 5.5 each. You won't get as much back from either, granted, but they do look better value.

You could apply the same logic to getting Walcott over Siggy, even a great season for Wally will see him only get 10-20 more points than Siggy imo, better to have the extra to upgrade defence I feel.

Think both Ki & Shelvey may do well though.

Thinking about it, yes Siggy probably offers decent value too. I guess it depends how much you have to spend - you should get what you pay for either way. I've been very impressed with the pricing, this season.

In the first 5 they have Newcastle, Sunderland and Watford (who will likely be fighting relegation) and 2 tricky matches. Why shouldn't he have returns?

      AC if looking for nailed-on-ness.

BD might give more goals/assists but Shaw can be dropped randomly too. Also both Kosc and Shaw seem to always have fitness issues cropping up intermittently.

        B) Ozil & Lukaku (Lukaku -> Pelle in GW2)
        C) Hendo & Kane
        D) Hendo & Lukaku (Lukaku -> Kane in GW2)

I have taken a punt on Lukaku myself, but I am told that planning a transfer is bad. Don't know what to do myself. But if forced, would select A. I have Wally and Pelle myself, I left out Mane to get a more balanced side.

If it's only for the first 3 game weeks, I'd go with PVA (lei, NOR, SWA) & Fonté (new, EVE, wat). It comes in 1m cheaper too.

    RMT:

This is my team for the first 3 GWs. All my funds have gone into my starting 11 as WC will be played GW4 to bring in Sanchez and Aguero, along with players from the several teams that have good fixtures at that point.

    Ruddy - Rudd
    Ivan - Cedric - Ogbonna - O'Shea - Targett
    Hazard - Silva - Ozil / Depay / Ramsey - Ki - Fletcher
    Costa - Rooney - Graham

Gone with Ogbonna as West Ham have 2 very strong home fixtures in the first 3 games.

I'm hoping Targett gets 1 game in v Newcastle, but if anyone has any other recommendations for a 4.0 I'm all ears.

Biggest dilemma at the mo is which £8.5m mid to have. LVG has just pretty much confirmed Depay will play as Number 10 in a 433 a start of the season, which has me very tempted. But I have no Arsenal cover so should I go for Ramsey or Ozil if not Depay?

Thanks in advance. Always good advice

      • 16 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

I would want Arsenal cover. Ramsey over Depay here.

I'm also thinking about having a 0 bench team. you can set them up really well and not that much of a gamble over only 3 gw's.

Don't like your front 3 in all honesty. I see Kane and Benteke as slight gambles given the small amount of rest for Kane and the uncertainty over how Benteke will fit into Liverpools style.

I'd suggest Kane > Rooney and Sakho > Deeney

With so many options in the 8.5m and 9m range is there any 6m mids that would pair with Hazard that can compete with a pair of say Sterling & Fabregas or Carzola, Walcott, Ozil, Mata, Depay?

Or I'm I talking myself out of Hazard when he should be in my team?

    1. Arsenal Deli

I'm very tempted also to do Hazard > £8.5m and Ki > £8.5m.

But Hazard is the safer bet for the 1st few GWs. Most seem to be saying to follow the herd until we see the more regular point scorers.

I like A cause Darmian has good fixtures and Ritchie seems and exciting prospect
I like B cause Henderson is "safer" IMO than Ritchie
