Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

Thoughts on the team, DZ? 🙂

Not completely sold on Mahrez but otherwise very sound. Of all of the 5.5s, Mahrez is the best pick so without changing structure, it's as good as it gets 🙂

Solid, good balance, I just think you spent a tad too much on your defence. I'd downgrade that and upgrade one of your forwards.

Really well balance team..I quite like it..though I feel your defense is a bit expensive.

Also Since you have Mahrez as a 4th Mid and Wilson as a 3rd Striker, I think you need a better 5th mid.

I don't get the point, Southampton significantly less chances inside the box conceded and they were on holiday for most of those matches - how does it prove that Swansea are better?

I'm not quite sure why don't you rate my Mignolet pick according to this table.

I still feel the people going 3 big mids come out with too weak forwards.

Pelle has 12 goals in 3200 mins. Kane has 21 goals in 2500 mins. Slight difference in quality for those extra 1.5M, for instance.

Don't plan that far ahead mate. 8 game weeks is a lot of time, with so many transfers still to happen and 2 international breaks within that period, thing will change rapidly

Certainly looks decent. I think you just might be one big-hitting attacking player short though. As others have suggested, I'd be tempted to downgrade at the back (I know we would all love Ivan in an ideal world) and improve on Mahrez as a 4th mid.

However, I understand the strategy, so if you're committed to doing that then who am I to say otherwise - best of luck 🙂

Thanks for the thoughts mate. Much appreciated. Ivanovic is there because A) He starts the season well and B) A simple downgrade from him to a 4.5/5.0 defender would allow me to get Aguero, when required.

Hey guys, what do you think of my team?
    This isn't a look-at-my-team-topic, but more a help-me-I-feel-quite-insecure-topic...
I'm thinking of playing a 3-4-3 (or 3-5-2, but the midfield is in my opinion somewhat lacking).

    Courtois - Ruddy
    Ivanovic - Mertesacker - Clyne - Huth - Targett
    Hazard - Ramsey - Henderson - Schneiderlin - Fletcher
    Agüero - Pellè - Deeney

    Looking forward to the comments!

I think Scheiderlein is a poor pick for 4th midfielder.

With our fixtures there's no way I'd double Chelsea defense, I'd go with Butland instead of Courtois.

Other than that not bad, you know Aguero is a risk but I'm considering starting with him as well.

Good call on the Chelsea fixtures, just assumed Chelsea would win their games easily with a high probability of a clean sheet (I have almost no doubts of Chelsea retaining their title.

So I guess I'll be trying to upgrade Schneiderlin, whilst downgrading Courtois.

Since this is the first I'll be playing Fantasy, do you know how much impact the goalkeeper has on your chances of a win?
What I really want to know, is rotating two somewhat mediocre (but nailed) goalkeepers with good fixtures enough or should I try to maybe switch to Courtois after a couple of his bad Gameweeks...

Evening all, hope we're all doing well.

As someone who was sadly unable to watch the Community Shield last night, despite a craving for football, I'm somewhat confused as to the overall implications.

Read up and some news sources seemed to suggest that Walcott proved his worth over Giroud, whilst others say the exact opposite, that Giroud did more after coming on. What did (the far more knowledgeable) FFS community take out of the game?

Also, Bellerin is one that definitely now interests me, though whether I can squeeze him in remains to be seen.

Walcott wasn't great and didn't get many chances. One glancing header from a FK and a sideways pass to AOC who did all the work to score the goal.

In Giroud's short stint he got himself into some excellent positions and could have gotten a brace if his finishing was better.

Also Bellerin appears to be first choice. Debuchy's strength is his defensive ability and you would have thought he'd have started against Hazard in such an encounter. The fact Bellerin started is a big show of faith from Wenger.

That's what I thought when I heard he played.

The problem is he doesn't really fill me with the kind of "set and forget" confidence of a solid 5.5 defender. If I knew he'd be starting indefinitely I'd be all over it, but Debuchy will surely play some? Or perhaps he'll be for the cups.

Bellerin suits Arsenal's style better being an ex Barcelona player. His attacking prowess suits Wenger much better. Debuchy was more of a panic buy

After last night the only thing I'm sure of is that I'm not sure who the best pick in Arsenal attack is.

      So, staying away for now.

Bellerin is definitely interesting, he handled himself alright last night too and is very attacking.

Like the Bellerin pick. Rest looks solid, and pretty well balanced. Arsenal midfield is a lottery, though you've bought 2 tickets so you may well be cheering. I'd look to go without Targett (a transfer waiting to happen) and Wanyama (higher ownership -> may drop in price early should the casuals realise he's not going to score more than 3 pts most weeks). Still some doubts over Tekkers game time Wk1.

      Hope that helps.

Agree with flexibility but you have no United for example and they have decent fixtures

          Stacked defences are overrated

          Azpi to Clyne/Shaw
          Rose to 4.5
          Prodl to Pudil

And you can turn Chadli into a Depay or Mata (if you're intent on Roonless route)

Maybe i am biased as a Spurs fan, or maybe i feel that Spurs have been overlooked largely by FPL players - they are the 5th Best team in England and their players are priced very kindly - making the likes of Chadli and Rose just at the 'sweet spot' in terms of value for money

              Interesting.

I like the look of Watford with their signings, but I'm really not convinced of Bournemouth. I've got Prodl as my 4th defender, but decided against Francis, despite the rotation, because I reckon they'll be whipping boys this year.

Something to consider perhaps? Sunderland and Leicester might be better with so-so fixtures than Francis with a good one.

I guess if i am not reliant on the Wat/Bourn rotation then i can stretch out to a sunderland defender - which one would you say is the most nailed? O'Shea?

I can't profess to know myself, but the word from the local paper, and the resident Sunderland fan on here says Coates is the best bet.

I'd be personally tempted to downgrade Kos to Mertz, and then having a 5m defender instead. Someone did number crunching yesterday, and Kos would have got 2 baps, and Mertz would have got 1. In a game where we only won 1-0, where there was loads of defending, and Kos was exceptional, it's not a large difference. I reckon we'll we scoring 2 or 3 many weeks, that might leave all Arsenal defenders out of bonus points regardless of how good they are on CBI.

Not nailed unfortunately for fantasy football, fortunately for newcastle fans.

He may play the first 1-2, but only b/c Mbemba is still fresh off the plane and Coloccini is recovering from injury. Once they are back, Saylor will be out. Plus the hope is that we buy another CB (unlikely, but necessary).

Also a possibility that Janmaat plays CB to start the season to give us some more solidity whilst Colo recovers, again pushing Saylor out of the side.

@TFF are you planning your wildcard for the second international break? Because your goalie rotation is literally as bad as it gets in weeks 11 and 13. Away at the Ethiad or away at Stamford Bridge is the choice for both of those weeks.

My team is set up for the first 8 game weeks, Balders. Too many variables too take into account to plan till game week 11 or 13 right now imo. Haven't planned when to use my wildcard yet, will use it when the team needs it

Good point, Ryan. Just think that 8 game weeks is a lot of time, with so many transfers still to happen and 2 international breaks within that period, things will change rapidly

            • 12 Years
            10 years, 6 months ago

This is all well and true but spending transfers on goalies is pretty much fruitless so you may as well as get a set and forget or a rotation that works up to your wildcard (or gw19 if you don't know when that is).

I'm afraid that's a horrible myth Balders. Will just see which defenses are looking solid by game week 9, and use one FT to either change Mignolet/Ruddy with someone who rotates well. I did the same last season with replacing Begovic half way through with Foster (based on his defensive stats) and it worked really well

Did your end of season goalie total exceed Chelsea's combined or Fabianski? As someone who fielded 8 GKs based on fixture blocks + defence only to end up with a couple of points less than Fabianski, I've pretty much written them off as wasted FTs

Yeah WC for 11 to get in united and some others looks good. Though my personal alternative to the GW4 wildcard is going into week 18, that one's mega.

    Pick 3:

    A. Starting Kolarov, will prob start gw1 and be on pen and set pieces if yaya and kun aren't playing. (GW1 punt).
    B. Go with Clyne.

    A. Lukaku (C) gw1 punt then switch to Benteke gw2.
    B. Start with Benteke.

    A. Play Sinclair gw1, bench Sakho.
    B. Vice versa.

Consensus on here seems to be that only the brave or stupid would go without Hazard from the start. I don't want to end up in either of those camps, but I'm seriously considering going without. Here's how I see it

The chances of Hazard scoring well in gw1 must be about 50-60% (I.e. Pretty high compared to other players). Let's say I stick to my guns and go without...

    SCENARIO 1: He scores well
    - 56% fpl players happy
    - 44% unhappy (depending on how the alternatives do)
    - No rush to get him in with City and WBA up next
    - He cannot realistically rise in price due to high ownership
    - I take my time to re-jig my squad to get him in (obviously easy option is a gw3-4 wc which lots are considering anyway)

    SCENARIO 2: He blanks
    - Opportunity for replacements to get ahead of most players (inc most of the top players)
    - Casuals sell in droves to whichever mid got a brace on gw1
    - Price fall very likely with City an WBA to come (potential for further blanks)
    - non-owners can jump on for a discount in gw3-4 wc having got a points advantage too

I'm starting to wonder whether the upsides of not owning him are worth the risks. Also, as had been said many times, a squad without Hazard looks a lot better than one with him in - that £3m goes a long way!

Disclaimer. I will prob have Hazard for most of the season, just like last year

I've always said that the Haz/No Haz choice is a very personal one - there's very valid pros and cons either way. And I would agree that Haz owners have an awful lot riding on the opening game - but then again, non-Haz owners are the same, so you can't really avoid that one.

Problem is you cannot though. Hazard isn't that explosive really, but what makes him great is that he often scores 1 goal and ends up on 11p. 1 goal in each of those matches is fairly possible.

I'd dispute whether or not he can rise in price if he performs GW1 - at that stage there will be more than enough active managers without him to trigger price rises.

Have price rises not been based on the proportion of owners buying / selling? Therefore would need a lot of buyers to get him ahead of city game to trigger a change.

Traditionally a flat number of transfers are required for a price rise - so each player needs 70k (guess) net transfers in to trigger a price rise - whether they're owned by 1% or 50% of players, its no different. Price falls are based on proportions, though.

Note that just because the price changes have been done this way in the past doesn't necessarily mean they're the same this season. But it's the best we've got.

It wasn't really an estimate - more an example. Can't remember what it was at the start of last season but 70k shouldn't be too wide of the mark. Not that the threshold should really influence any decisions at this stage of the season.

I think the price is the problem. Likewise with Aguero- yocan weigh up the pros and cons of going with / going without but the odds are you're gonna want them eventually and if you are willing to burn the wildcard to fit them in its fine, if not then you will need major surgery to shoehorn them in

I think almost all your points are pretty much on the mark and its the reason why I plan similar, though hedging my bets slightly by starting with Fab, in the hope if he does go apesh1t crazy the damage is minimised by picking up some assists. Those that captain him may get a headstart but I am not too scared of undoubled gains. I would be more scared if his early fixtures were easier, but can't see I would captain him in all of first three weeks, so prefer to spread the funds elsewhere.
If he does go ballistic week 1, I will bring him straight in and drop the Kun purchase back I week as I am set up to do either in 1 transfer.
I am not sure he will price drop in week 1 anyway with one blank, but must admit really hoping he does blank, Fab gets a return, Kun starts, everyone panics and goes Haz to Fab to afford Kun earlier than expected and Fab gets +0.2, Haz -0.1price change and all of us non owners get a result for our bravery \ stupidity (delete pending Haz haul or not.)

Where's all this extra cash going considering Costa and Augero won't start GW1? I think it's now quite easy to get Haz so why not?

      1. Don't forget WBA also got thrashed on a few occasions last year. 4-1 Arsenal on last day of season, QPR 4-1, ManC 3-0 for example. Yes they did do very well against Chelsea last season
      2. Also don't forget that they beat Chelsea 3-0 and Fab got sent off, so Chelsea could be out for revenge.
      3. Man City have been awful in preseason and Kompany seems way past his best. Could be a high scoring game.
      4. He has scored 2 in 3 preseason games. He wasn't that bad against Arsenal and I think Fabs poor performance didn't help that, also no Costa.

So for all the negatives he could also do well...

I think you're right, they rarely work. 😉

At the start of the season anyway. I find that I always have to make a lot of transfers the first few weeks now matter how well I've planned ahead, and if I can get away with just a couple of hits I'm happy. So having an obligatory preplanned transfer at this stage would almost certainly mean -4 points, and Lukaku would have to score over 4 points better than the alternative on average, or 2 points better as captain, to compensate this. I think I can find someone who can do better than Lukaku-minus-two-points.

really liked it, solid team but it just seemed to me you've spent a bit much on
williams and lescott? i'd personally choose just one of them but together they seem
      very solid.

doubling on arsenal is also a bit too much. i always like to get a punt in mf
at early stages but considering walcott will play fw and i chose him for my team.
defoe is ok but sunderland is a tad defensive for a player like defoe. i chose jerome 0.5 cheaper

but i get the idea behind the team which i liked a lot. if it can give any further idea:

      cech-hennessey
      azpili-williams-bassong-richards-huth
      hazard-walcott-chadli-payet-mahrez
