Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

Morning all! Couple of questions to help finish off my team:

    1) Wilson or Deeney?

    2) Aguero from the off or Rooney and then switch?

M thinking Wilson (better service )
      Going with Rooney and sterling
Then get aguero after Chelsea game

Defo Wilson. He has better fixtures, a more attacking team around him and he has continuity from last season with his support whereas Deeney has an entirely new team around him

Rooney for 3 weeks, Aguero after that

Won both my mini leagues last season so it will be good to be nearer the bottom of a league this time.

Lots of changes to my team this morning, but fairly happy with it. Any thoughts?

    Schmeichel / Ruddy

    Azpili / Mertesacker / Huth / Francis / Targett

    Sterling / Haz / Ozil / Mane / Anya

    Wilson / Rooney / Benteke

    0.5 ITB

    Good to go?

Hard to see many flaws to be honest. Only comments I would have are check Benteke is fit for GW1, and consider using the extra 0.5 to do Mertesacker -> Koscielny or Targett -> 4.5m

        Nice one, cheers.

Think Targett will be ok to use for a couple of weeks, moved Cedric out for him. And considering the Mertesacker > Kos move, only thing thats stopping me is thinking that maybe having 0.5 ITB might be handy for making moves over the 1st couple of weeks.

Maybe Anya to either Flethcer or Wanyama. Notice ANya has been playing left back a bit over pre season so losing a bit of appeal.

Coquelin is another although he's a booking every week. But i guess if on the bench then at least he starts for Arsenal so if he comes in will get a 2 pointer.

Bournemouth have much better fixtures for first 6 or so weeks and promoted teams like Bournemouth (very attacking) typically start well as teams don't know what they are up against.

    Ruddy

Not bad but a little heavy in defence i think.

No convinced about Defoe & Sakho. Seems a little light up top.

I may be biased but there isn't a better striker for 6.5m <

sakho scores for fun and carroll and valencia out he is nailed

defence i agree but i do think defoe will start well and sakho i want so id have to upgrade mahrez who i think is a steal for good fixtures and price.

maybe tadic to depay or mane? and downgrade cedric?

Agree for 6.5 Sakho is the best value striker around that range. I'm just not sure I'd want him and Defoe.

Think if you can squeeze Depay in there it could be a nice move.

Given the love from 99% of people, I can't see them selling him. Personally I am going without, teams look so unbalance with Aguero, Haz and another top striker. I can't pick Haz ahead of Rooney or Costa

City have poor fixtures and their defence isn't solid
Villa are always leaky as are Spurs
          Simpson won't play.

I would get a Leicester defender and Southampton. Upgrade Simpson. Giroud also not nailed on and Costa didn't play yesterday not sure if he will be fit or not for Saturday.
Your team needs a lot of work

            Thanks for the heads up!

Shall I swap out Costa + Giroud for Rooney + Kane then?

I will swap out villa, city and spurs defenders. Possibly Williams / Clyne / Fonte? Simpson is also now gone, I wasn't sure if he played anyway so thanks for that.

From the sounds of it, Midfield seems ok just defence needs a lot of work. Both strikers are doubts so ill swap them out too and both haven't had the best pre season.

Depends on the rest of your mid & fw

I'm going with Pelle as i believe Mane is ever so slightly over priced @ £8m and better options available at that price point. In addition Tadic is on pens and retains a good amount of freekicks / corners. SOT fixtures are good so im going with Pelle for "cover".

I haven't really been keeping up to date but heard a bit of talk about him not being match fit. I think Rodgers said he'll wait to see whether he plays GW1. I'll probably have him, but it's not ideal.

Tekkers is fine, scored a screamer yesterday. Aguero definite no no, Costa wait for the presser.

Cheers Balders, I'm going to just not worry about Aguero now and if I need to WC, that's fine.

I already had Rooney and Costa, Rooney's been the stalwart of my team since FPL opened. Probably have to do Costa to Benteke.

I have Kos and Azpi in defense.

How would you spread out the remaining 14 million?

    A) 5,5-4,5-4,0 (e.g. Mertesacker or Clyne, Huth, non playing sub)

    B) 5,0-4,5-4,5 (e.g. Cedric, Huth, Ward)

    C) 6,0-4,0-4,0 (well no-one really stands out in the 6,0 category other than Kos and Azpi and I have them already)

I've gone Targett too, saves 0.5m and with Aguero to squeeze in every penny counts. He'll only come off my bench a couple of times in 1st 8 weeks anyway.

Aguero is must have when fit. Agree.

When planning your team make sure you can get him with 2FTs without destroying you team. For me its quite simple if no major injuries.

Rooney is my "banker" and Wilson will be my enabler. In Gw4.

    Rooney -> Aguero
    Tekkers -> Wilson

    Just my 2 cents

I could get Aguero in for Rooney by downgradeing my mids but not sure if I'm willing to drop any of Mane,Haz,Walcott,Sterling

    RMT please:

    Schmeichel (Butland)
Yoshida - Clyne - Coates (Huth - Ryan Bennet)
    Depay - Hazard - Sterling - Wanyama - Walcott
    Rooney - Benteke (Sakho)

Not sure what formation I should go for here, tempted to drop Wanyama for Sakho in GW1. Captain Walcott VC Sterling? Should I try Hazard to Fab and upgrade some of the defense, Sakho to Kane or Wanyama to Hendo or something?

    Schmeichel, Butland
    Kos, Azip, Huth, O’Shea, Targett
    Hazard, Ozil, Hendo, Ritchie, Wanyama
    Rooney, Costa, Sahko

I know Costa is a doubt but waiting on team news before swapping out.
