Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

Morning all - a little advise please... current team:

    Myhill // (Hennesey)
Azpi // Kosc // Cedric (Huth // Targett)
Haz // Wally // Sterling // Hendo (Fletcher)
    Pelle // Rooney // Sakho

    I'm thinking of having Wilson WK1 (v villa) - then Sakho WK2....

Should i go with Sakho from the start or do the above? Often there are lots of changes post WK1 so thinking maybe i shouldn't be planning on using my FT before things even get going...

yes..i have concerns too re his attacking threat - however keep coming back to value / ownership and pens.

Those 3 make him far more attractive than Milner... if he does explode however , its a nice easy switch (Milner / Ritchie etc)...

Do you have a preference of a Liv mid?

    Morning Guys,

Your valuable thoughts for the team are highly appreciated.

    Courtois, 4.0
    Mert, Alderweireld, O'shea, Richards, Targett
    Fab, Walcott, Depay, Chadli, Hendo
    Costa, Rooney, Jerome

Costa is depending on his hamstring. To be honest not sure whom to take instead.

If you're gonna play 3-5-2 week in week out, it looks good. I don't like Jerome, but as a benchwarmer he should do fine. Not too sure about Spurs defence, I think there's better out there.

The only thing that would really worry me, is not having City coverage...

Fair enough - planning on similar move myself. But regardless of him being fit i dnt think ill get him til GW4 - he often takes a few games before he really hits his stride.

however if the casuals have anything to do with it - ill most likely be forced to bring him in before his £ rises.

Targett will not be starting long...perhaps just the first week; perhaps not even. Still, there aren't any other good options at his price anyway.

I like Lens too. Will get goals. Just not a fan of Sterling.

Your root to Rooney>Kun could be to 'downgrade' Stirling to Depay/Mata (actually an upgrade IMO; see who is outscoring) and 'downgrade' Walcott to Ramsey/Ozil/Cazorla (again see who is outscoring). Having Ivan for the first weeks may prove invaluable; downgrade to Azpil thereafter, especially if Filipe's replacement looks like a bench warmer.

I'm going to Deeney over Wilson but then again so are most, so I like the Wilson differential.

      1. Triple P
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 6 months ago

        Cheers mate 🙂

I have Targett because I need a 4.0. He might impress the first couple of weeks, so might rise in price (hopefully).

I was thinking of downgrading Hazard --> Fab to do Rooney --> Kun. For now I need Sterling as he is the best City coverage IMO. Depay and Ramsey are definitely on my watchlist, will get them in as soon as they are getting the points.

I'm taking Ivan because his goal threat is so much higher than Azpi... I couldn't bear it to have Azpi, and watch Ivan score....

Wilson over Deeney, is purely based on the fixtures of the first 12 GW's. Plus I rate Bournemouth higher than Watford (attacking potential).

        Thanks for your comments tho!

    ---------Courtois---------

Think you need to upgrade your defence a bit. Not a fan of Alderweireld and Clyne. Spurs never keep clean sheets think there are better options than Clyne e.g. Bellerin, Merts, Asp etc

Much the same as my thinking. All out attack.

8 (although I don't know how to improve it)

I've lost count of how many drafts I'm into now.

Would love to know what you all think of this team:

    Schmeichel - Butland
    Azpil - Mertesacker - Ward - Distin - Simpson
    Hazard - Henderson - Wanyama - Puncheon - Sinclair
    Aguero - Costa - Benteke

Monitoring Aguero and Costa doubts up til the deadline.

Anyone got some idea of when the RMT and Projections in the members area will be updated with new players/transfers etc? Got my fantasy draft coming up on Thursday and want to use it to my advantage

Lukaku or Pelle for the first 3-4 gameweeks before I use my wildcard? Rest of the team looks like this.

    Myhill-Schmeichel
    Kos-Azpi-Cedric-Huth-Bennett
    Özil-Mané-Walcott-Ritchie-4,5
    Costa-Rooney-Lukaku/Pelle

      Pelle

I've got the same dilemma. Gone with Lukaku at the moment because I have Mane too. Plus I think he will smash it against Watford. But if I go for Pelle then I can swap Mane for Sterling. Decisions, decisions.

I would still have to keep Mane if I go with Pelle since I have no money left in the bank. However, Southamptons fixtures are good enough that a double up might be a decent pick.

    Ruddy
    Azpi Kos Kolarov(!)
    Haz Özil Mane Chadli
    Rooney Benteke Sakho

    Butland Huth Targett Wanyama

Quite like this team currently. It's just that you never know what you get with Kolarov.

Madness to go with him? Do we think he'll play?

Anyone on here seen Jonas Knudsen play? Either in the Danish League or for the National U21's? We have signed him to replace Mings and he looked very promising on his debut on the weekend. He has a very long throw (probably what convinced Mick to sign him) so the other teams in the Championship are going to get bombarded even more this season!

Right guys. I made a team right after fpl opened and haven't really touched it since, so please obliterate this team:

    Butland Ruddy

    Mert Cedric Huth Mings Richards

    Hazard Walcott Yaya Cabaye Anya

    Lukaku Costa Sakho

would be great if you guys could help me improve this team,

    thanks 🙂

    Todays round of changes...

    Schmeichel (Butland)

Azpilicueta Koscielny Shaw (Baker) (S. Taylor)

    Hazard Walcott Cazorla Barkley Sterling

    Pellè Benteke (Samaras)

    TO

    Schmeichel (Butland)

    Azpilicueta Bellerin Shaw Kolarov S.Taylor

    Mane Walcott Cazorla Sinclair Sterling

    Benteke Rooney Lambert

    Overall better?
I wasn't too overawed by Chelski yesterday, I know it's not going to be an exact guide to their form but I do worry that they have a little 'Champions' hangover and might be slow to start (GW3/GW4)
