There’s plenty for Fantasy managers to monitor this Gameweek as we look to recover from last week’s frustrating start to the season. Arsene Wenger’s starting XI at Palace, Christian Benteke’s home bow for Liverpool, Swansea and West Ham’s mid-price options and Sergio Aguero’s minutes at home to Chelsea are amongst our lunchtime topics.

Wenger’s teamsheet at Selhurst…
After being wounded by Arsene Wenger’s decision to bench Theo Walcott, the Gunners’ teamsheet at Palace is probably the most anticipated of the weekend. Presumably Arsene will react to the West Ham defeat with changes – Hector Bellerin, Walcott and Alexis Sanchez are surely in line for starts but, as will be the case all season, we’re not quite sure how Wenger will shuffle the pack or if he’s really committed to a first-choice XI.

Hazard’s role in Chelsea’s Etihad plan…
Eden Hazard is suddenly a concern. A hefty 11.5 is a big price to pay when the likes of Oscar and a cast of mid-price talent are turning in points. The Belgian’s ability to step up and remind us of his “essential†qualities are not gifted the most obliging of stages: we expect Jose Mourinho to turn up, roll out Ramires and bench Oscar and charge Hazard with leading occasional counter-attacks. Mourinho and Hazard may just surprise us.

The need for speed with the Aguero option…
When is the right time to swoop for Aguero? With a 13.0 price tag, the Argentine represents one sizeable panic button which, at some point, every FPL manager will thinking about hitting. A start, coupled with a convincing performance against Chelsea, will tip many over the edge ahead of the Gameweek 3 trip to Goodison. Aguero’s own words yesterday casts doubt over that place on the teamsheet – that may just be City playing Mourinho at his own game.

Benteke’s opening night at Anfield…
Three points at Stoke did not disguise the fact that Christian Benteke was a yard or two behind the quick thinking of Philippe Coutinho and the supporting midfield cast. It could take time to adjust to the lights of Anfield, something that his 42% ownership will not want to entertain. The visit of Bournemouth for his home debut appears to offer a platform for goals and points. We’ll be watching keenly to see if he can take such an opportunity.

Sherwood’s use of the Gestede weapon…
Aston Villa’s new centre forward is something of a freak of nature. Leaping improbably off the ground with power and determination, Rudy Gestede is a weapon that offers Tim Sherwood an obvious route to wreak havoc. We’re not sure how the rangy Frenchman will cope with the regular rigours of a Premier League start but, this evening, we may just find out. One thing is for certain, Gestede will be charged with putting the frighteners on the slight Danny Blind and the twitchy Sergio Romero.

Rooney and Depay, take two…
United have weapons of their own but, on Saturday’s evidence, Louis van Gaal hasn’t quite discovered how to flick the safety catch. Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay spent much of their first top flight game in tandem patrolling similar areas, dropping deep to trying to affect play rather than piercing the Spurs defence. It will be fascinating to see how another week in training has moved things on and whether United’s tactics away from home will provide the pair with the opportunity to inflict damage.

The Kane supply at the Lane…
Harry Kane is a damage dealer of the very highest calibre but, like Rooney and Depay, had his threat muted in a match of few opportunities. The home clash with Stoke should ignite Spurs and give us Fantasy managers the opportunity to assess whether last season’s revelation deserves 9.5 of our funds. We’ll also be keeping tabs on Christian Eriksen – a bright spark at Old Trafford and, for some reason, still a far more alluring option than Nacer Chadli, despite the 1.5 price difference.

The Swans on the front foot…
Prior to Monday night and City’s slick dismantling of West Brom, Swansea were probably the stand-out performers of Gameweek 1. We’re touting Bafétimbi Gomis to anyone that will listen after seeing Garry Monk put out a cavalier side inspired by the speed and threat of Jefferson Montero and Andre Ayew. That was Swansea away from home and on the counter – we’re now waiting to see what they can offer at the Liberty when Newcastle come knocking. Let’s just say we’re expecting Gomis and co. to ruffle the Magpies’ feathers.

Deeney’s showing in the new-look Hornets…
Watford surprised Roberto Martinez and Fantasy managers with their Goodison performance. We expected a stuttering, rearguard action and we got an enterprising display of slick football. Deeney is the key figure – a no-nonsense frontrunner who leads by example and greedily snatches opportunities from dead-balls and open play. The West Brom defence didn’t give too much away on their travels under Tony Pulis and, after being schooled on Monday night, we can’t see Deeney and the Hornets getting too many opportunities for joy. If he takes one of them, our interest will pique.

The Payet and Sakho combination…
It looks delicious. A 7.5 creator, feeding a 6.5 predator up front. With four obliging home fixtures in six, it would be surely be folly to look beyond at least one of Dimitri Payet or Diafra Sakho in the coming weeks? Saturday’s lip-smacking meeting of day one’s two top performers will tell us more. The Hammers won’t get it all their own way against Leicester and we’ll be watching on to see how Claudio Ranieri calms the Foxes’ natural eagerness to attack. With Payet and Sakho on the prowl, we can’t imagine that the Italian will set his team up to blitz West Ham the way they tore into Sunderland.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        Not understanding your logic for why Ox wouldn´t start? The best performer out for a player who probably would get outworked by Charles N´Zogbia?

        We would likely see Giroud sit than Ox.

          Wont it be sanchez, ozil, ramsey behind either Giroud/Walcott? How would you squeeze chambo in? Unless you take Ramsey back and replace Cazorla/Coquelin, but can't see Wenger doing that

            This. Alexis in from the start means Ox is much more a rotating risk. Welbeck out means Giroud and Wally will be forwards.

        probably their set-up will leaving him running more and treading more water than against Spurs. They may have figured out how to shrink the midfield...but likely he may be an 82-87 minute guy at the worst.

    Rooney hasn't scored in Villa park since 2010. But he hasn't played as a no 9 since 2010. He spent the last 3 years mainly in midfield (last year,Moyes's year and Fergie's last year). Also Utd have scored 8 goals at Villa park in the last 4 games. He is a better captain pick than many here make it look. Isn't he also 1 goal away from being no 3 of Utd's all time scorers?

        The same can be said about Benteke. Add to that, he had a pretty short preseason (almost none), he is in a new team with a lot of new players that we don't know how long it will take them to gel.

        He plays up front for England. A player of his calibre and experience doesn't forget his role. Think Lahm in WC 2010. Played in midfield all season with Bayern. Germany were shite. Low switched him back to his favored RB role and boom they won the WC.

    Ok fellas. Just got home from MC'ing a football dinner - though fantasy football was all that was on my mind.

    Last chance to talk me out of:

    Rudd || Ruddy
    Azpi || Mert || Huth || Francis || Coates
    Haz || Ozil || Wally || Mane || Fletcher
    Roo || Benteke || Wilson

    GW2: Haz -> Payet/Ayew
    GW3: Wally -> Silva
    GW4: Roo -> Kun (0.5-1 mil left itb)

    Ballsy perhaps, but the justification:

    1) I wouldn't foreseeably captain Hazard (over Kun) in any fixture up until around GW13. Given the difficulty of his fixtures, he is less likely to be highly captained, mitigating any potential losses. On the other hand, City's incredible (particularly home) fixtures following GW4 are enough to tempt me into at least double City attack (Silva/Kun) over this period - a move facilitated by a Haz downgrade.

    2) Selling Hazard now does NOT mean that I will not buy him back. In fact, I'm almost certain I will. But I feel that the justification for dropping him early doors is compelling enough.

    3) Some may argue why not sell Walcott this week, and then Hazard next? A fair point. My thoughts are that given that I have few easy routes to Kun w/out a Haz downgrade, and so such a move (Haz out) is likely over the next couple of weeks regardless, I feel that I may as well make the move in the GW in which I believe he is least likely to score (given their strong opponents, and Mou's likely bus-parking). On the other hand, with Walcott, it appears that if he is ever going to start it will be this week, given Giroud/Arsenal's poor performance last week. Walcott's fixture this week is much better than Hazard's, so should he start, I would fancy him to be the higher scorer.

    4) Save the FT (giving greater flexibility) and potentially do the 2 moves next week? This is my best alternative, I think. I think it comes down to the simple point though that I see points for Ayew/Payet this week, on the basis of both fixtures and form, and I don't for Hazard. Thus, given my tendency to sell Haz next week anyway (if I don't think this week), barring any unlikely heroics against City, it appears logical to make the moves now. H/ever, this is the point on which I am most unsure. Feel free to argue to the contrary.

    So, friends, if any of you have kindly slogged through that colossus of a post, are any of you in agreement? Or, if not, do you have any compelling arguments to the contrary that may prompt a rethink?

      I totally agree with those transfers, maybe would do the last 2 together for a hit next week. Aguero vs Everton's weak defence must get a lot of points

        This. Most here are making next week's transfer this week - but dont forget potential cards/injury.

        Thanks Skodaole, appreciate it. As I replied below - I'll certainly consider this should City put in a very strong performance this weekend, or Everton a very poor one!

        Ahh, my fellow Newcastle fan, I am indeed. Very tough to fit them all in. I've tinkered around, and there's a possibility of getting Sanchez in around GW5 (with a hit) or GW6, in a double move (Ozil upgrade, Mane downgrade as S'oton hit their poor run of fixtures). This is probably what I'll be aiming towards - but it's getting a bit far away to have too much of a plan in place - the game is rather unexpected after all!

          I've done Hazard to Sanchez this week, could be a risk but for the same reasons as you I decided to get rid of Hazard.

          I'll probably have to forego Silva as a result, but I reckon Sterling will be a reasonable alternative and I'll be able to do Ramsey to Sterling next week.

            Sounds good mate. If Sanchez explodes this upcoming week then I may certainly have to consider prioritising bringing him in as opposed to Silva. For now though, the mercurial Spaniard it is!

      im looking at selling Haz too and i think your transfer all make sense.

      Personlly, I think you need Kun in gw3 though. Everton don't look at the races defensively so i would take a hit in GW 3.

        Cheers bud. Yea I think it will certainly be one I'll consider. If City put on a very strong performance against Chelsea this weekend, coupled with Everton conceding big to S'oton then I'd certainly consider it, and it would be an easily accessible option (albeit for a -4).

        Thanks mate. I think I'll just have to be happy in that knowledge when Hazard defies all the odds and scores a hatrick this week 😛

      Selling Hazard is all I've been thinking about today. However I already have Kun and Walcott, so my thinking is Hazard out for Sanchez, as you said hope that this is the one time Walcott will do well, and then downgrade Walcott next week to whichever mid-priced midfielder looks best so I can upgrade Wilson up front to Gomis / Sakho / someone else.

      Team will then be built around Kun, Sanchez and Pelle, which right now I'm happy with over Kun and Hazard.

      Extremely sound logic though, and as someone as already said, if it does all go wrong at least you'll know it was just luck, not your judgement!

          We'll see, but thank you :).

          After being absolutely certain that I needed Hazard in my team at the start of the season it feels a bit weird to get rid already. I'm tempted to leave it for another week and do three subs next week, but an away game against City is hardly the best indication for how he'll do in the coming weeks, and we know Sanchez is starting against Palace.

          I know no-one else in my league will do it though and end up sticking with Haz, and most of them still need to get Kun in, so somehow Sanchez could be a ridiculous differential!

          Still got the niggling feeling that I'm trying to justify a dodgy decision to myself though...

            Yea I think the main reason why I felt I needed Haz in the team was for that first week where his captaincy percentage was going to be very high.

            I think we have to accept that it could go wrong. But, playing the odds to the best of our knowledge, I think the transfers you have mentioned seem reasonable moves to make.

            Best of luck 🙂

        I've got haz, ozil, depay, payet, wanyama 4 are away so I think I need to change one so I have more of a balance between home and away it's out of ozil and depay who goes if I do twist. Ozil do you think?

      Dammit.

      I've succumbed.

      Walcott to Payet it is.

      Form, fixtures, security of starts, and avoiding a £0.1m price drop are all contributing factors.
