LVG is so comically stubborn to me.

How many players has he tried at the #10 position since he has been in charge?
Rooney, ADM, Depay, Fellaini(perhaps?), Herrera and now Januzaj.

How does he fail to see that the answer is right in front of his eyes?

In order to play that role, you have to be smart. You need vision, creativity, and technical ability. You don't have to be the biggest or fastest but you do need to able to process movement quickly in your head. You need to able to see the play before the ball reaches your feet, anticipate the runs of your attackers and have the technical ability to distribute via ground/air assuring the weight of your pass is precise.

Mata proved once again that he is by far, the most qualified candidate for that role and his stats for chances created (3) today fortify his merit in that position.

While Januzaj looked very composed in the box when scoring the goal, that wouldn't be possible without that exceptional pass into space, between the defenders. Having the ability to execute that, instead of just putting in an aerial cross in (which is what most players, like Depay, would do in that instance), is much more important in my opinion. Mata also set up Depay beautifully in the 2nd half. Basically, put it on a silver platter, only for him to drag it wide.

What does he have against Mata as a #10?

The last few pages are plagued with Rooney complaints but I don't think he is the underlying problem. 3 penalty area touches and 2 shot attempts in 2 games proves that he is not getting the delivery/service required to make an impact.

LVG is the real issue here.

I'm not a United fan, but if I was, this would drive me nuts.

By the way, to those playing Dugout Draft, you may want to pick up Januzaj as a bench option, as I'm sure he is available in most leagues and might have earned himself a few more starts with his goal.

    The End.

I have been saying Mata. The guy can thread a pass through a defence like he did tonight. He is so comfortable with the ball and he can score goals. I am a United fan and it does drive me nuts.

Not sure if it's just that he doesn't want to play anyone else on the right or what at this point.

I'd also like to see Herrera start, gives some energy going forward.

LVG dropped Depay from the 10 position after 1 game. Only a matter of time before he figures it out. Pedro arriving might be the catalyst.

    Not a Walcott owner but...

What's the logic in keeping him past his price drop tonight? He's gonna be a massive game time risk regardless of what he does this weekend and, given how expensive he is, that surely means you'll need to get rid of him asap anyway?

Even if Theo does explode he's still going to be rotated though. There's too much competition in midfield and Giroud is the better CF. Even when in good form it'd still be no shock to see him benched as Arsenal are a better side with him on the bench.

Think it would just be to get a better assessment of options and to see if other players you have get injured/dropped/suspended.
Outside chance of something happening that means his starts look more secure too I suppose, but that's pretty unlikley.

That said, I'm looking to ditch tonight, but it's damn difficult to know who for.

    1. Bubz

His problem is that he is not up to it. Simple as that. He was truly awful. Nobody else to blame for it but himself.

        • 12 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

He was, but that's a bit simplistic imo.

Why is no one passing him the ball? Why does he keep giving it away? Why isn't he running in behind?

A lot of these questions can be answered by the lack of a playmaking #10. United's problem too. The fulcrum has been cul-de-sac runners: Memphis and Adnan.

        1. Bubz
          • 12 Years
          10 years, 5 months ago

Nobody is passing him the ball because he has zero movement whatsoever other than jogging towards the ball aimlessly

He doesn't have the acceleration or pace to get behind the defence anymore without being offside. His touch is appalling and has forgotten how to play with his back to goal.

Sometimes it's difficult for us FPL managers to look at a player in a different light. Whether it was Ramsey @5.5 a few years ago or Yaya at 6 it's impossible for us to fathom that a player we previously considered unfashionable to suddenly become an fpl heavyweight. I honestly feel that another such situation is developing with a player. Said player is the ever so unfashionable
    Jonjo Shelvey..
after he got criticized for his ban last december he returned in GW 23 and was told to either up his game or leave. He was known for losing possession making bad tackles and not keeping up his fitness. The 4 match ban was when Monk finally lost it regarding Shelvey. However, Shelvey improved tenfold after returning and did not fail to impress. After registering a measly 1 goal ad assist in the season's first half he upped his game upon returning and being given a second chance.
From that point until the season end he got 2 goals and 4 assists(same as Ozil for eg. over that period for eg) and averaged more than 4 points per game. Over this period he was given a similar role to the one he started this season(and even more set pieces and an attacking role now)
Members compare Shelvey last season GW 1 to 22 and GW 23 to 38 and prepare to be stunned.

Read an article about his struggle to get back in the team and convince the fans and Monk post ban and it lead me to check his stats and even go through each fixture in detail. Honestly feel we have a bargain on our hands, especially with all signs pointing to an even bigger improvement this season. in the 15 games he played upon returning from suspension he scored 65 points. with no freak games in between which skewed his points tally

Guys, stop making assumptions. At the end of the day, we are just managers on an online fantasy game. Stop criticizing Van Gaal for not playing him there, that man has many years of experience as a manager and is most likely double/triple our ages. Yes, he can be very stubborn at times, but at the end of the day he's still a world class manager. My personal observation of playing Mata on the right is simply due to the spaces given and his ability to use his lethal left foot. If you notice, most teams play with defensive mids that tend to man mark and stop the attacking midfielder of any given team. Therefore, by playing Mata on the right hand side and experimenting with different players at the attacking midfield role is mainly to give spaces for Juan to operate. If you watched today, Januzaj was not afforded much space, he couldn't do much due to the opposition's set up. On the other hand, Juan was able to have yards of space to creative the first goal, and what should of been another hadn't that newcoming flop Depay converted it.

Would love to get in Cabaye but his fixtures look awful...

I just sold Walcott for Cabaye and Rooney for Aguero with my 2 FT's and it feels good. Cabaye will be relatively fixture proof I reckon..

Lol @ the 17 people who have transferred Wally in so far tonight. Gotta love a punt!

The fact that there are too many variables going into tomorrow's second set of games is preventing me from losing walcott for several reasons
    1. The Yaya vs Silva vs Sterling Debate.
    2. Is there a Tottenham forward worth investing in?
    3. Injuries & loss of form. Not a lot of players currently have form, and that is the tricky part. Imagine if, for example, I brought in Sterling, and tomorrow he missed a handful of chances will Yaya had a field day. I'd feel like an utter dummy!

My scenario includes A) using one early FT & saving a lost 0.1 mill by doing Walcott to Sterling/Yaya now, or B) waiting & assesing and ending up doing 2 FT if I want to drop Wally.

I'm kinda new to this. Well, it's my 7th (or 8th?) year but what the hell does all this triple captain stuff mean? Sorry - what, when, how? Looks awesome. So you can use it once through the season i take it?

Once a season for each chip. Triple captain would be 6 points for Rooney tonight instead of 4.
