For the second consecutive Gameweek, Man United edged their way to three points in the most unspectacular style, easily keeping hosts Aston Villa at bay to claim a 1-0 win. Adnan Januzaj was the unlikely hero, bought into the side by Louis van Gaal in the “number ten” role, he took his opportunity with a crafty first-half strike. Meanwhile, our Captain Poll leader Wayne Rooney disappointed his horde of owners with a listless display, as the United back four claimed further returns. Here’s the notes on Friday’s encounter…

Januzaj Stakes a Claim

With rumours of a loan move to Sunderland gathering pace, Van Gaal handed the young Belgian a central attacking role behind Rooney for the Villa Park visit. Januzaj’s first-half strike certainly strengthened his claim for a place in the first XI, with his introduction allowing Memphis Depay to take up the left flank berth he occupied for PSV last season.

At just 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Januzaj would clearly be a steal if he can nail down a regular role, though his withdrawal just before the hour mark perhaps highlights Van Gaal’s reluctance to extend his pitch time – the young Belgian started only seven times for the Red Devils in 2014/15. Furthermore, the club’s interest in Barcelona’s Pedro raises further question marks over Januzaj’s place in the overall pecking order.

Lacklustre Rooney Fails to Spark

They may be sitting pretty at the top of the table but, from a Fantasy perspective, it’s fair to say the Old Trafford outfit have failed to impress in the final third.

Van Gaal’s men managed a mere two shots on target last night and, bearing in mind they scored with their only attempt on target at home to Spurs, the lack of spark is a major concern for high-ownership assets such as Wayne Rooney (41%) and Depay (23%). Juan Mata, meanwhile, remains an under-the-radar option – owned by just 7% of Fantasy managers, he grabbed the assist and maximum bonus for a nine-point haul.

Certainly, last night’s decision to shift Depay to the left will give Van Gaal food for thought. Whilst the summer signing fired an eye-catching seven attempts, Rooney failed to produce a single shot over the 90 minutes.

Given that City’s schedule takes a significant turn for the better in Gameweek 4, Rooney and Depay may well be set for significant sales once next week’s home clash with Newcastle is out of the way, as we look to find space for the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva in our 15-man squads. Rooney is already suffering heavy sales, soaring to the summit of the FPL “transfers out” rankings overnight.

Darmian and the Defence Hold Firm

Whilst their forwards toil, the United defence chalked up a second straight clean sheet after keeping Tim Sherwood’s side at bay. The visitors restricted Villa to a single shot on target, with Sergio Romero once again benefitting from David de Gea’s absence to offer the value route into their backline at just 5.0. With uncertainty over the Spaniard’s future, though, Matteo Darmian looks the most profitable pick here; the summer signing – who’s risen to 5.6 – has now picked up a couple of bonus points in each of the first two Gameweeks. Clashes against Swansea, Liverpool, Southampton and Arsenal in the five fixtures directly after the Newcastle match suggests his short-term prospects are perhaps less enticing, though. Quite frankly, United’s rearguard has impressed but has yet to face an opponent that’s provided a sustained and direct threat on goal.

It's DZ time..Posted this last night but it got lost in the Rooney is cr@p posts..

Sometimes it's difficult for us FPL managers to look at a player in a different light. Whether it was Ramsey @5.5 a few years ago or Yaya at 6 it's impossible for us to fathom that a player we previously dismissed has suddenly become an fpl heavyweight. I honestly feel that another such situation is developing with Jonjo Shelvey...

After he got criticized for his ban last December he returned in GW 23 and was told to either up his game or leave. He was known for losing possession making bad tackles and not keeping up his fitness. The 4 match ban was when Monk finally lost patience with him and even criticised him publicly. However, Shelvey improved tenfold after returning and did not fail to impress. After registering a measly 1 goal and assist in the season's first half he upped his game upon being given a second chance.
From that point until the season end he got 2 goals and 4 assists(same as Ozil for eg. over that period) and averaged more than 4 points per game.
Members compare Shelvey last season GW 1 to 22 and GW 23 to 38 and prepare to be stunned.
Honestly feel we have a bargain on our hands, especially with all signs pointing to an even bigger improvement this season. in the 15 games he played upon returning from suspension he scored 65 points. with no freak games in between which skewed his points tally.
With a more attacking role and greater presence on set pieces this season we could see his breakout fpl year. I've put my money where my mouth is this time and Shelvey starts for me vs NEW today 😎

Great punt with Shelvey. I have been talking him up at work big time since the game versus Chelsea. His through balls from deep for Gomis were absolutely perfect if only Gomis had timed his runs better. One to watch for sure

Last week I thought he was excellent but he just couldn't help himself as he continues to collect cards like confetti due to his penchant for at least one bad challenge per game. With his reputation he'll always get booked even if he only does it once!

Think he's more of a UFPL than FPL prospect but would be a good differential who on his day will really pay off

Risers last night: 5 in total

Mignolet, Romero// Ayew, Cabaye // Kone

    Fallers: 20 in total

Ospina, Valdes // Wasilweski,Valencia, Tabalou, Angella // N'zogbia, Moses, Atsu, Herrera, Wally, Ki, Lanzini // Wilson, Naismith, Adebayor, Wickham, Vydra, Ideye, Mitrovic

Number of risers and fallers in two rounds combined so far:
    Risers: 3 GKs, 4 Defs, 4 Mids, 1 Fwd
    Fallers: 3 GKs, 7 Defs, 8 Mids, 20 Fwds

No one has risen or fallen twice yet.

It seems we can kick out any out of form/ player with a blank and expect to buy them in 2 weeks with 0.6 price drop (cue Aguero of last season) 😉

      RE: FPLstats or FFF reliability

Both failed to predict the Mignolet or Kone rises. (Kone was 4th in line on both with approx mid-80%, Mignolet is a strange one as Albrington/Payet have higher NTIs but haven't risen, do GKs have a smaller threshold perhaps)

Both had Courtois, Hutton and J.Ayew all falling and they didn't.

Neither predicted Adebayor and N'Zogbia falls.(both were in excess of 93% on FFF and above 98% on FPLstats)

FFF didn't predict Valencia, Ospina or Tabanou falling (the last two were above 96 @ midnight but Valencia was only on 34%), FPL stats did.

FFF predicted falls for Ritchie and Clichy that didn't materialise, FPLstats didn't predict falls.

The conclusion from all this is that FPLstats is more reliable than FFF (at least currently) but that neither are totally accurate.

I wouldn't agree with that, personally. I thought the way they passed the ball around was extremely brave, and were the better team last night.

That being said, Richards was terrible for the goal, and the set plays were scarily bad defensively.

            They were the better team.

But "belief" is that moment when you take a shot. Townsend has it. Villa do not.

Also, I don't go along with the pundits, and the generality on here, that they were that bad defensively.

Although tbf, United were absolutely crap. Even Mata was off ...

From open play they did quite well, although it was basically 12v10 with Rooney last night. But Richards certainly overcommitted for what was a relatively pedestrian turn from Januzaj, and the few 'non-corner' set pieces they looked pretty poor, although Man U's delivery was worse.

Hmm... I thought they just lacked a bit of creativity to open up chances against a tight defence.

And Agbonlahor isn't really a PL quality 9 anyway. I imagine Gestede will be their focal point, much like the big belgian lump was.

I think its simply too expensive at the moment to include Hazard, Sanchez and Aguero in one team. You are talking around 35% of the budget on 3 players. There is simply really good cost effective mids and strikers at the moment.

Personally i have forgone Hazard from the "big 3" and Brought in Mane, Ayew and Sakho. These two mids in particular play really high up the field and effectively play second striker at times. Especially watching them in their GW1 games, they have loads of potential.

Anyhow, lets hope they do the business tonight 🙂

Also wasnt happy with how hazard was playing. Looks like Mou has made sure he tracks back alot to complete tackles meaning he will need to do alot more running to get into the attacking positions he is so effective from.

I actually can't believe how terrible Man U were last night and against Tottenham. I don't like LVG "philosophy" and haven't ever seen sparks of it being pleasing on the eye since he's been in the BPL.

No Man U players are getting into my squad now!

Sorry, you are right I should have said 'attacking' players. Their defense is good, their attack is sole destroying.

Courtois has got to be the best way into the Chelsea defence when he's 5.4?

Premium GK's are rarely worth it. Save points are means the value is generally in cheaper keepers in worse defences.
