For the second consecutive Gameweek, Man United edged their way to three points in the most unspectacular style, easily keeping hosts Aston Villa at bay to claim a 1-0 win. Adnan Januzaj was the unlikely hero, bought into the side by Louis van Gaal in the “number ten” role, he took his opportunity with a crafty first-half strike. Meanwhile, our Captain Poll leader Wayne Rooney disappointed his horde of owners with a listless display, as the United back four claimed further returns. Here’s the notes on Friday’s encounter…

Januzaj Stakes a Claim

With rumours of a loan move to Sunderland gathering pace, Van Gaal handed the young Belgian a central attacking role behind Rooney for the Villa Park visit. Januzaj’s first-half strike certainly strengthened his claim for a place in the first XI, with his introduction allowing Memphis Depay to take up the left flank berth he occupied for PSV last season.

At just 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Januzaj would clearly be a steal if he can nail down a regular role, though his withdrawal just before the hour mark perhaps highlights Van Gaal’s reluctance to extend his pitch time – the young Belgian started only seven times for the Red Devils in 2014/15. Furthermore, the club’s interest in Barcelona’s Pedro raises further question marks over Januzaj’s place in the overall pecking order.

Lacklustre Rooney Fails to Spark

They may be sitting pretty at the top of the table but, from a Fantasy perspective, it’s fair to say the Old Trafford outfit have failed to impress in the final third.

Van Gaal’s men managed a mere two shots on target last night and, bearing in mind they scored with their only attempt on target at home to Spurs, the lack of spark is a major concern for high-ownership assets such as Wayne Rooney (41%) and Depay (23%). Juan Mata, meanwhile, remains an under-the-radar option – owned by just 7% of Fantasy managers, he grabbed the assist and maximum bonus for a nine-point haul.

Certainly, last night’s decision to shift Depay to the left will give Van Gaal food for thought. Whilst the summer signing fired an eye-catching seven attempts, Rooney failed to produce a single shot over the 90 minutes.

Given that City’s schedule takes a significant turn for the better in Gameweek 4, Rooney and Depay may well be set for significant sales once next week’s home clash with Newcastle is out of the way, as we look to find space for the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva in our 15-man squads. Rooney is already suffering heavy sales, soaring to the summit of the FPL “transfers out” rankings overnight.

Darmian and the Defence Hold Firm

Whilst their forwards toil, the United defence chalked up a second straight clean sheet after keeping Tim Sherwood’s side at bay. The visitors restricted Villa to a single shot on target, with Sergio Romero once again benefitting from David de Gea’s absence to offer the value route into their backline at just 5.0. With uncertainty over the Spaniard’s future, though, Matteo Darmian looks the most profitable pick here; the summer signing – who’s risen to 5.6 – has now picked up a couple of bonus points in each of the first two Gameweeks. Clashes against Swansea, Liverpool, Southampton and Arsenal in the five fixtures directly after the Newcastle match suggests his short-term prospects are perhaps less enticing, though. Quite frankly, United’s rearguard has impressed but has yet to face an opponent that’s provided a sustained and direct threat on goal.

Seem to be a few Southampton fans around today. I am one too, but I don't own mane or pelle so it is going to be awkward viewing, hoping for some goals from elsewhere today!

PPU is obviously a good guideline but when you've got a player high on confidence playing in a number 10 role against a defensive midfielder who rarely ever scored or assists, surely it goes out of the window?

But with my 22 points from GW1 clearly I've lost any FPL ability I once had ha

I think its simply too expensive at the moment to include Hazard, Sanchez and Aguero in one team. You are talking around 35% of the budget on 3 players. There is simply really good cost effective mids and strikers at the moment.

Personally i have forgone Hazard from the "big 3" and Brought in Mane, Ayew and Sakho. These two mids in particular play really high up the field and effectively play second striker at times. Especially watching them in their GW1 games, they have loads of potential.

Also wasnt happy with how Hazard was playing during GW1. Looks like Mou has made sure he tracks back alot to complete tackles and pressure the oppositions attack, meaning he will need to do alot more running to get into the attacking positions he is so effective from.

Anyhow, lets hope they do the business tonight and im right about hazard for the next few weeks at least 😉

Think it might take a while for him to settle. He could end up on the bench if he doesn't get down to some defensive duties. Januzaj staked his claim last night and young just does what he's told by LVG so could well nail down the left spot again.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is this the end of the road for Rooney as a Fantasy Football asset?

Has the writing been on the wall for a while for Rooney? Have his change in position and contract wranglings in recent years been masking a wider deterioration in his ability to score or assist?

Or should we discard him at our peril, with an on paper great home tie against Newcastle in Gwk 3.

For many he will become Aguero in Gameweek 4, but will anyone get him back in later in the season? Or is it time to say goodbye once and for all to Wayne?

Rooney (C) next week. I'm not worried in the slightlest. Two iffy performances yes but he's still a 15-20 goal a season striker

Maybe a bit of gut feeling but he's still a quality player. If Hazard does nothing this week are we all going to start slating him as well? We're two games into the season. He got something like 12 goals last season from midfield

Hazard looked threatening in the last 25 minutes of the last match whereas Rooney has had what, 3-4 touches in the box in last 2 matches? Didn't do anything for England in a long time or in pre-season. Can't say the same for Hazard

Also, he seems to have regressed even further compared to last season.

I think the Newcastle game is making many hold for now. He may fall once but I can't see twice. I can do a straight swap with Aguero no hit and still have change so happy to wait. Very tempted to ditch him before Newcastle but it just feels wrong. Even playing badly he's capable of a goal or assist. Post Newcastle though he's gone for me and perhaps, with Aguero, Kane, Pelle, Gomis etc all posting better stats and results, he will never return. Time will tell.

Rooney is a form player. Either he scores in bunches or doesn't score at all. As of now, he is in can't-get-a-touch form, leave alone scoring.

On top of it, we don't look threatening at all. I have already sold him. He isn't coming back unless scores back to back, looks threatening and I can feel comfortable captaining him.

The underlyings are looking really bad. I'll keep him (not cap) for GW3 but then join the throngs and drop for Aguero - prob permanently. I'm expecting to WC GW4 anyway, as was my pre-season expectation. I'll prolly have a Chelsea-free squad too as I'm thinking Moanie's got as off-the-boil as Ronnpig has.

I think it's fair to say he's not a big hitter anymore. Partly that's due to him losing a yard or two of pace, but he also seems to have lost the drive and mindset of a goalscorer.

However, he has always been very consistent at Old Trafford, even last season when he was largely in midfield (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/08/14/the-scoreboard-gameweek-2-friday/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_10893627), he's on penalties (according to Shearer) and he simply hasn't had a clear cut chance in the first two games. He's also very likely to grab cheap points by pure virtue of being in and around the box when United attack (as against Spurs).

Personally, I'm giving him the armband this week, then switching to Aguero for GW4 without an shred of doubt. United should be more attacking at home to Newcastle than they were against Spurs or away to Villa. I think they'll score more than once, and as such, its overwhelmingly likely that Rooney will be involved. From GW4, the fixtures are poor until November. I almost certainly won't get him back until then, and he'll have to prove a lot in the next couple of months to find his way back into my team at all.

"but he also seems to have lost the drive and mindset of a goalscorer." 100% true.

    23. Biancazzurri
      • 13 Years

The problem is Manchester United itself and LVG's style of play. The Dutchman's 'total football' does not create many clear-cut chances inside the penalty area, instead, it seems, favouring the inside-cutting mids like Depay, Young, Mata. Rooney isn't 'tricky' as much as they are and he cannot even create the space for a long-range effort. When it comes to counter-attacking it looks like Depay is the one getting the opportunities.

Rooney is nowhere near the action. Fixtures cannot not fix that.

Ask yourself: are you worried you won't have him against Newcastle? I wouldn't be.

    24. Ruth_NZ
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

Well, I saw Rooney play live only 6 months or so ago. He played centre midfield and it was one of the best performances I saw at Stamford Bridge all season. So I don't think he's finished as a player.

Looking back over his career goals record, he has a longstanding tendency to start seasons slowly and come on stronger later on. He also looks "chunky" to me right now (as Breadbin observed above) and although that may just be his body type making it harder for him to get to full fitness, that should improve with games.

I don't think he's finished as a FPL asset. But I will think twice about selecting him early in the season again. Wait till he hits form I think.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

PS There's a very good chance of no price fall this week. He's still in positive territory (+4% according to FFF) and only falling very slowly. A start and goal for Aguero might spark people to move early but otherwise his ace fixture next week (Newcastle at Old Trafford) should probably see him safe. 0.1 drop at most I think.

Fergie always used to say Rooney (& United) got better in the 2nd half of the season. He's clearly very off-the-boil at the moment but I can't see it staying that way. One to monitor if he starts to hit some form.

He's already gone (after last night's game) for Aguero with my £2.5m in the bank from the start of the season. Yes, Aguero may not start tomorrow, but for GW3 I'd much prefer him than a listless, fumbling, heavy Rooney who doesn't seem to remember how to play in the box, and isn't getting the service to push him in there. I may well come back to Rooney - but only if United shift from grinding out dull results to playing exciting football with pace and intent.

Also, let's not start writing off Newcastle just because they conceded 2 to Southampton. I reckon their defence may well put up a much better fight than Everton's.

I have never understood early transfers you should have waited until the end of the game week and preferably until next Saturday. Your tactic making early transfers out of emotion is just asking for point hits during the course of the season.

Whom to captain out of Payet, hazard, ozil, sterling, pelle, costa?

Surely the front page poll is not a good indicator on which players managers decide for captain?

I meant, surely some will vote for useless one to make people choose the wrong option, or sway their decision?

I think people are mostly honest, it's just the people voting generally aren't the 'elite' players you find on here.

These are my predictions for today:

    Southampton 3 (Pelle (2), Mane) – Everton 1 (Barkley)
Sunderland 1 (Defoe) – Norwich 2 (Grabban, Whittaker)
Swansea 2 (Gomis, Montero) – Newcastle 1 (Coloccini)
    Tottenham 2 (Kane (2)) – Stoke 0
Watford 1 (Deeney) – West Brom 1 (Anichebe)
West Ham 1 (Sakho) – Leicester 2 (Mahrez, Okazaki)

    Anyone else?

Feels odd this morning, like there's something that I should be doing. Wasn't an exciting match last night, and rooney's performance was awful. looks like a man who's playing on the park on a sunday morning.

    This sums his performance up:
