Alexis Sanchez’ importance to Arsenal, Sergio Aguero’s ominous early-season form, Wayne Rooney’s toils up top and Chelsea’s out-of-sorts displays are all amongst this afternoon’s topics. Here are some of the lessons learned from Gameweek 2…

Rooney is playing his way out of our plans…
Much was expected of the United skipper after Louis van Gaal handed him the lone striker role this season. Instead, Rooney has offered little to suggest he will thrive in a 4-3-3 – he failed to produce a single effort against Villa on Friday evening and has already been sold by over 100,000 FPL managers as we look for a way to accommodate Sergio Aguero up top. Rooney may be the first name on his manager’s teamsheet but failure to deliver at home to Newcastle this weekend will ensure the exodus picks up pace as our Fantasy faith in Van Gaal’s “philosophy” quickly dwindles.

Southampton need to opt out of Europe…
As we saw in Everton’s case last year, battling on both domestic and European fronts can be detrimental to a team’s Fantasy prospects. Ronald Koeman’s side are offering little to suggest they can replicate last term’s heroics – five goals against after two matches, with Saturday’s home mauling at the hands of the Toffees a far cry from the form that saw them concede 13 goals at St Mary’s across 2014/15. A less hectic schedule may help and many will be hoping they fail to overcome Danish outfit FC Midtjylland in the final qualifying stage of the Europa League in order to keep Graziano Pelle, Sadio Mane and the Saints defence at the forefront of our Fantasy thinking.

Barkley is tempting us once again…
Everton’s opening schedule had deterred most from considering their main men but Ross Barkley’s opening displays have persuaded some to think again. The Toffees playmaker has thrived in a central role behind Romelu Lukaku and has already equalled last season’s two-goal haul, netting against Watford and Southampton, in addition to supplying an assist. At a price of just 6.5, Barkley certainly looks less prone to rotation this term due to a lack of European duties, though the next Gameweeks (MCI, tot, CHE, swa, wba, LIV, MUN, ars) look a real test of the Merseysiders’ mettle.

It’s difficult to question the Mahrez bandwagon…
Three goals against Sunderland and West Ham have earned the Leicester winger an almighty bandwagon, with Mahrez the first player to rise 0.2 in price this season. Still only setting us back 5.7 and with spot-kick duties looking likely as a result of Leonardo Ulloa’s drop to the bench, the case for his inclusion could barely be stronger; with seven of his ten shots arriving inside the box and six chances created in two matches, the Algerian’s underlying stats suggest he’s a perfect “Moneyball” example. Mahrez looks an ideal cut-price candidate for those needing to raise funds to accommodate Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez in our 15-man squads.

Payet has hit the ground running…
An assist for the Hammers’ opener at Arsenal was followed by their only goal at home to Leicester as the Frenchman wasted no time in settling into life in the top flight. Whilst Diafra Sakho has huffed and puffed without success up front, Payet has so far lived up to his reputation and with a central role in Slaven Bilic’s attack-minded 4-3-1-2 set-up; his set-piece duties and promptings in the middle of the park look vital to their prospects ahead of three very enticing home fixtures (BOU, NEW, NOR) in the next five.

Montero is suddenly unstoppable…
Restricted to just 15 starts last year due to hamstring concerns, the injury-free Swansea winger has finally been able to shown his true capabilities in the first two Gameweeks. With Garry Monk looking to go on the attack this season, Montero has produced 19 dribbles already – more than any other player – and, having tormented Branislav Ivanovic in Gameweek 1, his displays drew two yellows from Newcastle’s Daryl Janmaat as the Magpies were reduced to ten men at the Liberty on Saturday. Having earned eight assists despite limited pitch time last term, Monk will be hoping the South American can steer clear of the treatment room as the Swans momentum builds.

…which can only help Gomis and Ayew…
With Montero running riot down the left and the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jonjo Shelvey offering a steady supply of key passes from the centre of the park, it’s fair to say that Swansea have surpassed our expectations so far. Monk’s side sat second-bottom for shots inside the box in 2014/15 – only Sunderland managed less than their total of 224 – but they so far sit joint-top for both big chances (seven) and efforts on target (15). Having scored in each of their first two outings, Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew are becoming increasingly difficult to overlook in the mid-price bracket as the Welsh club build on their impressive opening day showing at the Bridge.

Sunderland are the whipping boys…
Three clean sheets in the final four fixtures of 2014/15 suggested Sunderland would offer us a viable source of defensive returns after Dick Advocaat reversed his decision to leave the Wearsiders over the summer. After seeing his side concede seven goals in the first two Gameweeks, the Dutchman must be having second thoughts over his stay at the Stadium of Light, though. As expected, Costel Pantilimon has been kept busy between the posts but even the Romanian’s save point heroics look unlikely to persuade many to hold on their Black Cats backline assets, with Advocaat’s side looking in freefall right now.

Walcott will struggle to displace Giroud…
After keeping his place for the trip to Palace, Olivier Giroud answered his critics in emphatic fashion with a superb opener in the 2-1 Selhurst Park win. Theo Walcott looks resigned to bench-warming duties once again and despite his heroics in the final match of 2014/15 and the FA Cup Final, the England international looks firmly behind the Frenchman for the lone striker role. With Aaron Ramsey taking over the right flank berth from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, there’s too much uncertainty surrounding Walcott’s minutes to be patient for any longer.

Sanchez is the untouchable…
Despite a late return to pre-season, the Chilean is simply too crucial to be eased back into action for Arsenal. Sanchez’ impressive cameo off the bench last week persuaded his manager he’s ready to start and Wenger reshuffled his side to accommodate the former Barcelona man for the trip to Selhurst Park. Given that Sanchez leads the way amongst midfielders for touches in the box, shots and attempts inside the area, despite being handed 104 minutes so far, many Fantasy managers will be following Wenger’s lead and doing all they can to bring him on board.

An almost fit Aguero is still too much to handle…
Unleashed from the start against Chelsea, the Argentine tormented the champions for 82 minutes before being replaced by Wilfried Bony late on. He may not be 100% match sharp but Aguero had more than enough in the tank to terrorise the Blues defence and rocket onto our Fantasy radars ahead of an outstanding run of fixtures for Manuel Pellegrini’s men. Snapped up by over 116,000 FPL managers already this week, his ownership now sits at 19% and is climbing fast as many look to hand him the armband for the foreseeable future.

Chelsea’s tough start suddenly looks tougher…
The Blues march to last season’s title was based on a resilience that saw them grind out more clean sheets (17) and concede fewer goals (32) than any other side. After two Gameweeks of the new campaign, Jose Mourinho’s men have already shipped five goals and afforded their opponents eight big chances – at least three more than any other side. Last week’s issues with the medical staff and John Terry’s half-time withdrawal at the Etihad may have hogged the headlines but they aren’t papering over the cracks. Something seems amiss at the Bridge right now and with little form at either end of the pitch, the exodus is picking up pace as the Blues prepare for this weekend’s trip to the Hawthorns.

Very similar to my team and I pushed the panic button on Saturday. Not regretting it at all made 0.5 mil in rises/falls already which is looking like doubling by the end of the week. Do it now before Kun's price goes stratospheric.

Having Hazard and Sanchez while already having Aguero and Silva seems an impossible feat without weakening the rest of my squad so, I'm thinking about:

    A) Hazard + Silva + Özil + Mahrez

But it's also tempting to have

    B) Sánchez + Silva + Fabregas + Mahrez

Which one would you go with?

after barely reaching 50 pts over 2 GWs, which is my absolutely worst start after 7 yrs playing FPL, I am seriously considering hitting the WC button early.

    The team is:

After a 'massive' 17 pts this GW (Milner yet to play), should I WC this team?
Or what transfers would you suggest?

    Cech - 4.0
    Azpi - Cedric - Huth - Coates - Francis
    Haz - Wally - Sterling - Milner - Wanyama
    Roo - Sakho - Pelle

    2 FTs

Should WC? Or just use my transfers, eventually a hit?

    Will appreciate an advice. Thanks!

      Copied from elsewhere but...

First of all: his philosophy isn't his playstyle. It's much more than this. It's essentially how he does his job: how he treats the players and staff, how he trains, which orders he gives to players and what his gameplan is. Louis van Gaal isn't fluent in English so 'philosophy' just about covers everything which he can't explain fully (he doesn't give out all his secrets either).

Louis van Gaal is a strong character. Players have to do what he says or you're not getting a spot in the team. If you're not pleasing him, he can be a nasty man. We've seen this with many players in the past, they collide with his personality or just can't get to grips with the way he wants to play the game no matter how hard they try. If you give everything and try to do as he says though he really is a nice man. He shows respect, always defends his players in front of the media and will never speak badly of a player in public. He's a real gentleman, he rather speaks about the team and not the individual. This might be annoying for us fans, but I'm sure the players appreciate it as they aren't getting burned after bad performances.

      Rules:
His formations don't really matter too much as he generally plays the same and he still follows his own set rules. Some of his rules which his teams MUST have (he will not play without this, unless he has no choice because of injury):

-Left/right foot combinations. With the exception of inverted wingers(or wingsbacks), you're not getting a spot on the left side if you're not extremely good with your left. Ditto for the right side.
-4 defensive minded players. He categorizes his players (I'll come back to this) and doesn't play without 4 of these.
-3/4 creative players. These are the only players who can take risks in the team and lose the ball, the rest has to follow orders and keep possesion. These usually are the wingers, number 10 and the striker.
-In a midfield 3 he wants: a CDM, a box-to-box midfielder who's good defensively and a creative midfielder as his number 10.

      Team selections:
He NEEDS 4 defensive minded players, this is the balance he keeps mentioning. We lack this. He bought players for a 352 but changed formation because it wasn't working and this left him in a spot of bother. With 352 he had 3 centrebacks+1 CDM, which is enough to please him.
With 4231 (his preferred 433) we got 2 centrebacks + Blind or Carrick. This isn't enough. He needs another midfielder, a box-to-box midfielder, who can bring him defensive balance. He tried Rooney, Fellaini, Mata and now Herrera but he isn't happy about them for this role. He will strenghten there in the mould of Strootman. The reason Fellaini is still playing is because Herrera is a creative player playing in his box-to-box role. We will never see Blind-Mata-Herrera as this would mean he doesn't have 4 defensive minded players. Having a defensive minded player at 10 isn't what he wants though so we won't see this next season.
This is why he doesn't fancy a 442 with wingers. He'd have 2 defensive midfielders, 2 wingers and 2 strikers and lack the most important player for him: his creative number 10.
The reason why he has fiddled around so much with players/formations is because he lacks the players for his own set rules, this won't be solved without transfers.

      How he generally plays:
Apart from his creative players, Louis van Gaal plays every single position. He tells each player what they can and can't do. They must know these tasks from each and every teammate on the pitch aswell. Each player got their own do's and do not's which are based on their strenghts and position in the starting 11. Rooney/Blackett can give a long ball, Mata can give trough balls and Di Maria can do whatever he wants. They need to perform these instructions to perfection or they're getting dropped.

In a perfect van Gaal match everything is about the number 10. The team plays in service of getting the number 10 in an ideal position to set up a goal for one of his teammates. He wants to achieve this by keeping the ball (frustrating & tiring the opposition) and dragging the opponent around to find space. If this space isn't found then they shouldn't panic but stick to the plan and recycle possesion. Only when van Gaal sees it isn't working he switches to his plan B (which he always has). In our case that is Fellaini and a more direct style of play.

He analyses the opponent in extreme detail and comes up with a specific plan for each and every match. It doesn't matter if it's Cambridge, Swansea or Chelsea. We will set up in a way to counter their strenghts and exploit their weakness: we will adapt to all opponents whilst playing his possesion based style.

Fullbacks/defensive midfielders for example can't dribble because of the risk of losing the ball. Passing to one of them who is marked is pointless because they've got the instruction to pass it back. The players must analyse the situation: the player who can't beat a man is marked, the winger who can make an action is there, the creative midfielder is standing in a position where he can't lose the ball so I can't pass it to him, the weak spot we're targetting is there etcetera etcetera are all things a player needs to think about in a split second when he's got the ball. The whole team is thinking of attacking when a non-creative player is on the ball because of the gameplan, they aren't prepared to defend. The team is also set to attack when a creative player has the ball in a dangerous position where they can't lose the ball (close to de Gea). When a creative player has the ball in a position where they can take risks though, the team is ready to defend and it doesn't matter if say Di Maria loses the ball. That's why he doesn't like Herrera as a CDM/BTB, he has too much risks in his game. If he loses the ball when he's not 'creative' this disturbs all instructions given to the other players because they're all in the wrong places and we're extremely vulnerable to the counter.

This is why van Gaal always struggles at first because most players aren't used to his ways and some will never learn this. It's always a project for the long term though, so we won't see results immediately. It's a very hard learning curve to play how van Gaal wants as he's extremely demanding. Limitted players like Fellaini (no offense) who only got only a few strenghts blossom under him because they don't get tasks which they can't perform. They don't need to think and only do as they've been told.

Like I mentioned each and every player has a specific task for their position in the gameplan, which changes each game. That's why he sometimes decides to drop a player because he thinks he needs somebody else in his place with a different strenght for a specific match.

All 11 players doing exactly what he wants in every single situation is hard to learn, but if it's performed well it's a great style of playing the game. It's attractive, attacking football which the fans will enjoy. It's nothing like Fergie's style though so people will have to get used to it, we're not seeing the way van Gaal would like us to play though so don't worry just yet. This year is all about top 4 and laying the foundations for next year.

With City nailed on to get Otamendi at the moment without a swap deal (aside from maybe Denayer or Rony Lopes going the other way), there is cause for much rotation in the City back line.

We know for a fact Hart will be starting almost every game unless he's injured or suspended, or being rested. Sagna has had a great season so far, and I expect him to keep Zaba out of the squad for one to two more weeks if he keeps it up. Kompany, being the captain, is likely to start every game unless there is UCL rotation or an easy match.

The next two spots are interesting. Mangala will not be sent to Valencia, reports say, which means he will be likely to stay and battle it out with Otamendi. Kolarov is having a fine season, and he should keep Clichy out of the squad barring a terrible game. I think Pellegrini's may start most of his games with a back line of

    Hart
    Zabaleta Kompany Otamendi Kolarov

I feel that against any pacier strike forces, Otamendi, Kolarov, and Zaba may be rotated with Manga, Clichy and Sagna (Pellegrini's has a habit of this). Demichelis looks to be making the move to CDM, which is a position he should do fine at, having experience here. I can also see Denayer going over to Valencia if this move is made, if not, he may start in the easier games or any Capital One/FA Cup games.

As we know that Kolarov usually plays 90 or nothing, a solid strategy may be to avoid Mangala or Zabaleta, and stick with players more likely to start every game; Kompany and Kolarov. For the former, you need not worry too much about rotation, for the latter, have a ready sub on the bench just in case.

anyone else feel the magnificent hype around Silva and Alexis is unwarranted? although Silva has had a great start to the season Fantasy wise one has to look at the fact although he oozes class he doesn't usually translate it into many goals and assists, and even his three assists this season have been corner, corner, lucky to be awarded that assist and his goal was quite lucky too, also doesn't have a lot of explosive or captaincy potential which is a huge negative for £10.0. Alexis too while a fantastic player has had his Fantasy output reduced sizeably since Ozil's return from injury in January and with that midfield he's always going to share his points, although he does have explosive or captaincy potential with Aguero in most sides he's not going to be captained enough to justify that £11.0 outlay for me.

Yaya with his top form rekindled and with 30 goals in the past at £1.4 cheaper than Silva is a better choice there while Ozil with his assists is a better option than Alexis at £2.5 cheaper.

    discuss.

The money would be the only reason I could potentially go Yaya instead of Silva - but Silva is playing the no 10 role now rather than on the wing. If City score goals, he'll be behind them.

I stuck with Gomis cap in UFPL even though he's my FPL cap.
Not much faith in him 🙁

I only have him in UFPL as well but sticking with Kolarov as captain. Don't know what I want from Benteke tonight.
