This season, we’re rolling out a Scout Picks squad in the middle of each week in order to give you a heads-up over our thinking for the Gameweek ahead. This list of players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the days progress.

For Gameweek 3, here’s our current thinking…

Goalkeepers

Having served his one-match suspension, Thibaut Courtois (5.4) comes back onto our radar as Chelsea look to bounce back against a West Brom side that’s yet to net this term. With David de Gea sidelined amid speculation on his future, Sergio Romero (5.1) targets a third consecutive clean sheet when Newcastle United pay visit. In the budget bracket, Palace’s Alex McCarthy (4.0) is pitted against an Aston Villa outfit that’s racked up the second-least attempts inside the box (seven).

Defenders

Manchester United’s back-to-back clean sheets encourage us to invest in their steady rearguard. Matteo Darmian (5.6) presents the strongest cast for inclusion, having notched two bonus points in both matches.

Joel Ward (4.5) bagged his second ever Premier League goal in the Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. Among the league’s full roster of defenders, the Palace centre-back ranks fourth for penalty box touches (six) and second for goal attempts (three) this term, underlining his enhanced goal threat.

Notwithstanding the threat of rotation now Gael Clichy’s returned to the bench, Aleksandar Kolarov’s (5.5) marauding wing play could well harvest attacking returns when the Sky Blues visit Goodison Park. Aside from boasting a share of set-piece duty, the Serbian full-back has executed four more key passes (seven) than any defender this campaign.

Swansea’s attacking contingent are understandably garnering the bulk of the plaudits for their fast start, yet Ashley Williams’ (5.0) contribution shouldn’t be ignored. The imposing Welshman scooped all three bonus points last time out and will fancy his chances of rebuffing Sunderland’s lacklustre forward line.

Aaron Creswell (5.5) retains a spot in our Scout Picks by virtue of West Ham’s favourable home tie against Bournemouth. The Cherries failed to net in the opening two Gameweeks, increasing our faith in the Hammers’ back line.

Midfielders

Alexis Sanchez looked in ominous form against Palace – tallying more attempts inside the box (six) than any midfielder in Gameweek 2 – which bodes well for the Gunners’ home clash against Liverpool. Elsewhere in London, Yohan Cabaye (6.6) reiterated his Fantasy potential with a 10-point haul in Gameweek 1 and will be looking to pull the strings when the Villains come to town, while Dimitri Payet (7.6) should find pockets of space between Bournemouth’s banks of four.

David Silva (10.0) is more than justifying his top-tier price tag in these early stages, having bagged three assists in two starts. Everton will certainly do well to stymie the twinkle-toed Spaniard’s captivating start to the campaign. Conversely, Sadio Mane (8.0) has yet to set alight but should cause all sorts of problems for Watford’s new-look defence.

With three goals to his name already this season, Riyad Mahrez (5.7) could enjoy further success against Tottenahm’s mistake-laden rearguard. Meanwhile, Andre Ayew (7.1)  seeks a third strike in as many starts as the Swans roll up to the Stadium of Light.

Juan Mata (8.5) has piqued our interested as a mid-priced differential, given that the Spain international recorded nine points against Villa and could be the chief architect of the Magpies’ downfall. Nathan Redmond (5.5) clearly has his shooting boots on in the wake of back-to-back goals on the Canaries’ return to the Premier League.

Forwards

Sergio Aguero (13.1) tested the nerve of all non-owners on his return to the starting line-up last Gameweek. Aside from gracing the scoresheet, last season’s Golden Boot victor fashioned a wealth of shooting opportunities (seven) against Chelsea’s typically resilient back four, auguring another strong display against everton.

A home fixture against Newcastle United presents Wayne Rooney (10.5) with the perfect platform to kick-start his season. On a similar note, Diafro Sakho (6.5) possesses the pace and movement to trouble Bournemouth’s defence.

Troy Deeney (5.5) looks the pick of the promoted forwards this Gameweek, as Watford welcome Southampton to Vicarage Road. The Saints shipped five goals in their opening two clashes, with the Hornets lone frontman primed to capitalise on their defensive vulnerabilities.

Bafetimbi Gomis (7.1) looks to have filled the void left upon Wilfried Bony’s departure; the in-form marksman will doubtless be licking his lips as he prepares to face off against a Black Cats defence that’s been breached seven times already.

Community Champion

For the second week in a row the Community Champion beat the Scout Picks. Gameweek 2 Champion Daniel Levy – Not the Spurs Chairman racked up an impressive tally of 52 thanks to Liverpool’s Christian Benteke. The Scouts’ faith in Wayne Rooney proved their undoing, with their Gameweek 2 picks mustering just 44 points.

The community member who beats the Scout Picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season. Gameweek 1 Champion Fuzzy Warble beat us by a 12-point margin and remains the champion to beat.

Patch has been named Gameweek 3 Community Champion following this week’s lottery.

Agree with above. Payet is best player there but A is a better choice, still not sure on Diouf, Sakho looks promising partly due to Payet behind him. Chadli is good for goald like Eriksen but a cheaper option obviously

      Please Help.

Cech Cahill, Cresswell, Skrtel, Fabregas, Oscar, Schneiderlin, Mata Benteke, Kane, Berahino Bench: Hennessey, Mutch, Kompany, Caulker Captain: Benteke and Vice is Kane. Bank: 0.9 million, I am going to use my wildcard who do you recommend i put in my new team, what position is most important.

Anyone’s help would be greatly appreciated.

What's your thinking behind Oscar? ?
I wouldn't bother with Caulker, berahino or mutch, and I think 2 Chelsea Mids is a risk. Kompany is a bit good for the bench too

Hi, thanks for your comments, should i move cresswell out of defence and put in kompany, also who would you replace caulker, berahino or mutch with. I did not think through Oscar correctly, he does not always start in the first team, mourinho rotates him.

Would you use your wildcard or tweak this team ?

The reason I ask is cos when he's fit, he may well take a share of set pieces off Fabregas, ie the Swansea game. So potentially a good pick but optimistic none the less. Having both therefore isn't going to maximise your returns.
I wasn't suggesting losing Cresswell, it's just that having Kompany on the bench will frustrate you cos you will likely lose points of his, playing for city it's harder to predict when they will get a cleansheet etc plus he's expensive to sit on the bench. Keep the bench cheap and try and fit Sanchez in instead of Fabregas?
I know the bench will hardly play, but still worth getting nailed on players, maybe like Martin, Redmond. And Diouf or Sakho are better options than Berahino imo

Of all the strange things in this FPL silly season, the imminent projected price fall of Sterling is probably the strangest.

He will take a little time to fully adjust to his new surroundings. I'd imagine all of his 17.5% owners knew that before the season began didn't they? But he's starting every game, playing in a forward role (though was given a specific job against Chelsea) and looks likely to do well.

If City had poor fixtures upcoming or were peforming poorly as a team I could maybe understand it. But at a time where most experienced managers are looking to increase City representation in their squads it seems bizarre that so many are dumping Sterling. Nearly 100,000 of them so far this week. 😕

Wildcards are at the root of a lot of it I guess. But that just goes to show that those wildcarding now are making decisions that will need to last on the basis of very limited evidence. If the current picture of who is doing well (and more importantly who WILL do well) shifts in the next couple of weeks there it will be interesting to see what happens.

I am quite worried tbh . My team value could be awful in a few weeks . Hennessey , Huth , Bassong , Sterling , Ritchie , Hazard, Cedric and Kane are all edging towards drops . I already suffered drops on Walcott and Ritchie .

Yes, but look at it this way, there will be some bargains out there. 🙂 Huth and Kane, for example, have done absolutely nothing to deserve dropping.

The alternative is to wildcard to the same team as everyone else. Because I have no doubt that the FFS wildebeest herd is driving a lot of these brutal price changes. They got it wrong pre-season. Maybe they'll get it wrong again.

I think it's a lot more simple than that tbh.

Silva and Yaya have loads of points, Sterling has none.

Doesn't make it a good move but it's an understandable move.

City are racking up the fpl points but Sterling has got no assists, no goals, its a fickle game so people are jumping all over YaYa and Silva as the City mids of choice. Proven fpl gold

          I'm not so sure.

Sterling wa worth the punt at the start of the season when some of the big hitters were missing.

Given that the big hitters (Sanchez/Aguero) are back, Sterling has been removed early in both of his fixtures so far (early withdrawal used to be something which plagued Silva) and the success of other city assets then I'm not surprised that anyone using their WC has got rid.

It was a punt that hasn't worked. You can easily get Silva and downgrade if Strrling starts to show more threat so I don't see why you would keep at this point.

If you dot need the funds then I wouldn't necessarily see him as a priority to go unless you don't want the 0.1 drop but if you're on a WC the I think it would be brave to keep/draft in.

I have and am keeping. However it is worrying how little of the ball he is getting in dangerous area's. Everytime he gets the ball he is playing the safe ball.

I'll give him time though with his good fixtures

I think you're vastly overestimating the majority of the FPL playing public! He hasn't scored points, so they've transferred him out - just like every other highly owned player who's blanked twice.

To give the people some credit though, all we have to go on is what's happened in the first two matches. If you're wildcarding, and you want City coverage, you're not going to touch Sterling.

He's been a very important cog in their good start, in a similar way to Navas. Those two have given City the sort of width they haven't enjoyed in years, and with two players who stretch the play and support their full backs defensively, it frees things up in the centre of the pitch. The main beneficiaries have been Yaya and Silva, both on the pitch and in FPL terms. They've been given more room, and are enjoying the freedom to get in the box, to score and to create.

Yes. "If you're wildcarding" being the operative phrase. I'll be very interested to know how many wildcards were played this week. Between 80k and 120k I'd guess. Maybe more.

But I have seen plenty of posts with people proposing taking hits or using FTs (or advising others to) to remove Sterling. Seems insane to me.

I never had him and don't much like him as a FPL asset, he's a bit like Ronaldo was at his age, the quality of end product isn't there yet as it will be in 2-3 years time. But if I did have him I sure as hell wouldn't be taking a hit to remove him. 😕

i imagine that lots of wildcarders are swapping him for a city mid with access to more accurate shooting boots

i don't think he scored that many goals last season, which is why i sold him after going into the season with the conviction that i'd have him til season's end. i don't watch very much football, and have a horribly unreliable memory, but i do seem to have been disappointed by his finishing in any match i do recall 😀

Exactly. So those that had him GW1 knew what they were getting. Nothing has changed.

Aguero has returned, that has happened. Sterling was originally chosen as a cheapish way into the Man C attack while Aguero was basent.

At the time it was felt Aguero would not be needed till GW4 giving three weeks for Sterling. Events at Chelsea have sped up the timetable. With C Aguero there is less need for Sterling, especially when he is looking a worse option than Silva

                    Yep.

Last week you insisted that Walcott was a better option than Ozil. "I am more confident on Walcott's chances than many others... and would rather own him this week than the likes of Ramsey or Ozil. At least Walcott owners have a solid exit plan in place. Ozil owners are likely to limp along for weeks."

Now I notice on your blog that you are "personally leaning towards Ozil". I wonder if that will change next week too?

Of course I can understand those on wildcard preferring Silva or Toure. But not everyone is wildcarding. For those that aren't taking Sterling out right now seems senseless doesn't it? Are 100,000 wildcards active this week? Maybe they are. 😕

I don't see Oxford getting 15 league starts this season. I think he will be used in the early rounds of the cups.

He's 16 and full of potential but one good game shouldn't make us think he's anywhere near nailed on for a season in the prem.

Is using your wildcard during a 2 week international break the best time to do it?

I'm considering holding on to mine for the next one.

If you haven't played yours yet no point playing now, just hold IMO

yes when the transfer window has shut certainly makes alot more sense than now.. unless of course all those who like to play safe with a template team now realise that they have made an absolute bollox of their initial selection and are left with no choice because everyone else is wildcarding and they must jump with them on the next template selection...
