We delve into the members data this evening after the Gameweek came to its conclusion last night. Stoke, Southampton and Watford’s forwards all come under analysis, whilst Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez make a strong claim for immediate investment on the back of their weekend showings.

  1. The case for Memphis Depay

So you've all seen Memphis Depay's goals in the Champions League qualifier last night and I want to convince you he's the real deal.

Memphis moved to United for £25m this summer on the back of two seasons of being a teenage shot monster in the Dutch Eridivisie. In both seasons he went at over 5 shots per game and dominated scoring in the league. Maintaining shots per game at above 5 in consecutive seasons is something only Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez, and Depay have done since 2010 across Europe.

Okay so Depay played in the Dutch league to get his 5 shots per game, so let’s say he regresses a bit in the Premier League and cuts his shots per game to 4. Only 14 players across the big 6 leagues have had 4 shots per game twice or more since 2010. Here's that list:

Premier League: Aguero, Suarez, Rooney, RVP
    Bundesliga: Robben
    La Liga: Ronaldo, Messi
Serie A: Zlatan, Balotelli, Diamanti, Di Natale
    Ligue 1: Zlatan, Gignac
    Eredivisie: Depay
    La Liga/Serie A: Higuain

It's a pretty elite company Memphis is keeping and at age 21 he is the youngest player here.

    "Yeah but it's the Eredivisie"

Okay we are only 2 league games into the season but he has already had 10 shots, showing his 5 shots per game potential.

Including the qualifier Man United have had three competitive games this season and this has been their collective and Memphis' attacking output over those games:

    1-0 Vs Spurs
Man U: 9 shots, 2 shots on target
Memphis: 3 shots, 0 SoT, 33% shot involvement

    1-0 Vs Villa
    Man U: 9 shots, 2 SoT
Memphis: 7 shots, 1 SoT, 1 key pass, 89% shot involvement

    3-1 Vs Brugges
    Man U: 19 shots total, 8 SoT
Memphis: 8 shots, 5 SoT, 3 key passes, 2 goals, 1 assist, 58% shot involvement, 100% goal involvement

    Memphis' combined involvement:
    18/38 Shots (48%)
    6/12 Shots on Target
    4 key passes
    22/38 shot involvement (58%)
    3/5 goal involvement

This is outstanding, he is already the fulcrum of Man United's attacking output with nearly 50% of their shots and 60% shot involvement. For 8.5m the fulcrum of a top 4 team's attack is an absolute bargain. If you’re on a wildcard get him, if you’re not make plans.

No doubting his abilities and skills.
Yet he's got someway to go to prove himself in EPL, physically.
EPL is no Club Brugge who'll give him so much space.

I like the guy though, even if I'm not planning to own him for FPL right away.

        Memphis (10.5%)
        Aguero (17.2%)
        RVP (15.6%)
        Suarez (12.5%)
        Rooney (15.6%)
        Messi (22.6%)
        Ronaldo (16.1%)
        Robben (20.3%)
        Zlatan (17.1%)
        Balotelli (11.4%)
        Diamanti (5.5%)
        Di Natale (17.1%)
        Gignac (7.5%)

Not great news for Memphis but I'm willing to give him leeway due to his age.

          Thanks for the effort Balders.
It tells a story. The only big hitter out of kilter is Suarez. Other guys have better conversion rates that can be compare realistically. I think Depay is going to be a great pick. I do think though his shots per game will drop 20% in the EPL.
Therefore, 10.5% x 80% = 8.25%. Not quite enough for me to fo for him ATM.
The best post this week though by far.

Cheers Smeggs. I was vaguely aware when posting that Depay's conversion was lower than most elite forwards but I hadn't got numbers on it.

I think the argument is still there to be made for Depay purely because of his price at 8.5m considering Aguero, RVP, Suarez and Rooney have all been worth 13m in their prime seasons.

Those 2 goals will give him a heap of confidence to. Nice post Balders.

One potential problem is if he blanks against Newcastle he'd be almost certain to drop in price as he's already very close to a drop according to the price change sites.

He was at -99.9% on one site earlier, but since those two goals he has moved significantly in the other direction. Many of those transfers in and out will have been wildcard transfers of course, but (unless there are sudden injury concerns) which way do you expect his transfer movement to go for the rest of the week?

I notice Balotelli is on that list of players who have have averaged 4 shots or more per game in two seasons since 2010. Balotelli had lots of shots at the start of last season too and we know how that turned out.

You've done some good research Balders, but it's shots on target and shots in box that I'm most interested in and against Premier League opposition the stats you've laid out don't look so hot. Early days of course, but there's not enough there to convince me yet.

Its the form and fixtures of United as a whole I'm worried about. Depays shots in the league have been speculative long range efforts. He does strike me as a flat track bully though and could do well against lesser opposition. Wouldn't surprise me if he does well against Newcastle, but then the fixtures get tough.

It's strange how people undervalue Brugge. They were very intense and pressured United physically for long periods. Eventually, though, they got tired and opened up, but the belgians were no pushovers and got so far into the qualifiers for a reason. They are better (more physical anyway) than many/most PL teams.

So in PL he has managed 1 SoT out of 10 shots in total? Not impressed. If I'm not mistaken, his scoring record the last two seasons in Eredivisie is worse than Dirk Kuyt's in his last two seasons, just to put things into perspective.

His willingness to shoot will eventually lead to goals, and he looks much more dangerous as an inverted winger on the left than as a number 10, but I think I'll go with Yaya for their nice run, and change for Depay when the fixtures turn.

If you're happy with all the options stick with it. Prices fall quickly at the stage of the season if people blank a couple of times but rise again quickly as well. For example, if Sterling bags a brace this weekend you'll make your money back.

If I were you, Coates would be my biggest worry. Balotelli could score against Sunderland at the moment.

A bench boos might require too much tinkering with your side. It maybe an idea to see what points sit on your bench on a weekly basis and make a decision from there.

        2. Jøssy â
          • 11 Years

I was thinking this initially, but getting any added value from a Bench Boost because of the DGW surely means you have so many players playing two games that some are on the bench.

Never in my many years of playing have I had any more than 5/6 players in my tram benefiting from a DGW, let alone 11+.

Yes, you could use a WC to build a team specifically for it, but considering there may only be 4 (max 6) teams that are doubled up, you may not be keen on 2/3 of them, and you can only have a maximum of three from each, how realistic is it to get 15 DGW players in your squad? This could also potentially leave you with a squad that's not well suited to points scoring in the following weeks, and may take several weeks to dismantle.

Does anyone disagree with this? I've been only contemplating iit this week, so I'd always assumed I would wait for a DGW too.

Agree. It sounds like dreamland but you'd leave yourself with a shambles of a team afterwards. If there was a GW37 DGW it would be worth it but not otherwise IMO.

Just made this on a WC.

    Ruddy
    Williams/ Gomez/ Richards
    Hazard/ Depay/ Sanchez/ Yaya
    Sakho/ Aguero/ 5.5

    Rudd/ Westwood/ Targett/ 4.5 DEF

A power mid to cover a poor defence and Gomis now being a 5.5?

Sorry, current and 'real' WC plan is this- just for comparison-

      Gk 4.5/ 4.0
      Darmian/ Williams/ Richards/ Tagett/ Gomiz
      Hazard/ Yaya/ Sanchez/ Maherz/ Westwood
      Gomis/ Aguero/ Sakho

dangerous mid. seems like what I would've done if i still had the same aggressive mindset as last year but if you're wcing then you should make sure you have 5 defenders that are nailed till winter

Sunderland scored 3 goals and he did 2 assists, he is a crucial player in their attack and they play home with Swansea, don´t you think they can play better and maybe Lens does something? I think I prefer to do Ritchie to Mahrez this week and then do Lens to Ritchie other week and upgrade elsewhere, what do you think?

WC use this week, after bad start of this season

    Option A:
    Guzan (Butland)
    Oxford M.Richard Kompany Cedric Gomez
    Coutinho Payet YYT Barkley Mahrez
    Kun Benteke Lakaku/Pelle

1 M left in the bank (Payet may consider to upgrade to Ozil or some others later)

    Option B:
    Guzan (Butland)
    Oxford M.Richard Kompany Cedric Gomez
    Coutinho Payet YYT Ozil Obertan
    Kun Benteke Lakaku/Pelle

    Question:
    1) A or B
    2) Lakaku or Pelle (South has easy fixture ahead: Wat, Nor, Wbm)
    3) As Storke will have quite a good fixture so far, should we choose some stroke DEF ???

quite long but I reallly need some advise, Im in bad situation now

Yeah, I think so. Although I think I would've drafted in Payet at some point anyway. Depay was the furthest man forward for United at the weekend and three attacking returns last night makes him a player I fear.

I'd wildcard to be honest. All the forwards need to go, you need Silva or YaYa and to put more money into the defence
