Memphis Depay nets twice as United grab a commanding first-leg lead over Belgian outfit Brugge. The FA reject West Ham’s appeal over Adrian’s sending off, Villa’s Jack Grealish could be in line for a weekend return, whilst Dick Advocaat contemplates changes to the Sunderland defence.

Depay Brace Sees off Brugge

Manchester United triumphed 3-1 at Old Trafford over opponents Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League play-off. Following a Michael Carrick own goal, Memphis Depay hit back with two excellent strikes in the first half to grant the Red Devils the lead. Marouane Fellaini then nodded home in the 94th minute to extend the hosts’ advantage.

The Scout Says: Louis van Gaal named the same XI that secured the win against Villa last Friday, fielding Depay on the left wing and Adnan Januzaj in “the hole” behind lone striker Wayne Rooney. Considering how Depay flourished in his favoured wide role – with his second goal of the ilk that he routinely produced at PSV Eindhoven – you’d fancy him to be deployed there henceforth. Over 32,000 FPL managers have now drafted him in this week as United prepare for the visit of Newcastle. With the Netherlands international shifted from the number ten berth, Januzaj and Fellaini (who is still suspended domestically) will be hoping to secure a central role, though it’s clear that Van Gaal is still in the market to strengthen his attack, with Thomas Mueller and Pedro strongly linked. Having bagged the winner against the Villains, Januzaj will likely be afforded another opportunity to impress in the league before Fellaini’s three-match suspension is finally served.

Adrian ban upheld by FA

West Ham’s appeal over Adrian’s weekend dismissal was rejected by the FA yesterday, meaning his three-match suspension will remain in effect.

The Scout Says: West Ham’s upcoming schedule (BOU, liv, NEW) throws up two home ties that looked like prime targets for clean sheet points, compounding the impact of Adrian’s ban. Recruited from Birmingham this summer, substitute shot-stopper Darren Randolph is very much an unknown quantity at this level, casting doubt over his ability to be an able stand-in. Fantasy managers in possession of Hammers defenders have reason to be confident, though, after witnessing Slaven Bilic’s troops rebuff Arsenal’s advances in Gameweek 1. Those that jumped on the Reece Oxford bandwagon, however, will likely be eyeing up alternatives, with Pedro Obiang expected to usurp the 16-year-old in central midfield at Upton Park against the Cherries.

Grealish plots comeback against Eagles

Having scored on his return to action with the Aston Villa U21s this week, Jack Grealish could return to the matchday squad for the senior side’s trip to Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, Tim Sherwood also revealed that Carles Gil was withdrawn from the reserve match through injury, while Jores Okore and Jose Angel Crespo are recuperating well from their respective knocks:

“The Derby match was a good workout for the boys. They need games – the lads who haven’t been playing. I thought Jack was very good. He played to the last minute. He looked fit enough to maybe be up for selection this weekend. Carles came off with a tight groin which is an indication the lack of training he has actually done. He will get fitter. Jores is not fit yet. But he is out there running. Jose is still not fit. He picked up a groin problem a few minutes into the Nottingham Forest game. It is disappointing for him – and the rest of us. But he won’t be too far away. Overall, we’re quite healthy.”

The Scout Says: Following the arrival of Jordan Ayew and Adama Traore this summer, Sherwood has a multitude of wide options at his disposal, negating the need to expedite Grealish’s return to first-team action. Nonetheless, the West Midlands club could certainly do with some of the academy product’s invention, considering their lack of creative spark across the opening two Gameweeks: no side has created fewer chances (eight) or fashioned fewer goal attempts (12) than Villa.

Advocaat contemplates defensive reshuffle

Baffled by the ineptitude of his team’s rearguard, Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat has threatened to enact changes for Swansea City’s visit on Saturday. In particular, The Dutchman implored his full-backs to concentrate on their defending:

“I didn’t want to change the back-line already after one game. But at the moment, there are players playing who I can’t understand why they are playing that way. I cannot understand it, honestly. But there must be a reason and I hope that they can tell me. I spoke to the players and told them that we like full-backs, who if the possibility comes, they go forward. But I’ve changed that. I’ve now set up a different way. The first way for the back four is now defence. And then the opponent cannot get the kind of space they got at Leicester. Take care of your man, and beside that, if you can do a little bit more, then go forwards, otherwise not. We have to change the basic facts.”

The Scout Says: John O’Shea – who was a stalwart in the Black Cats’ defence last term, starting all but one league tie as the Wearsiders went on to bag an impressive 13 clean sheets – looks likely to be drafted in for either Younes Kaboul or Sebastien Coates in light of their dreadful starts. Furthermore, with right-back Adam Matthews waiting in the wings, Billy Jones’ starting berth is seriously under threat. Meanwhile, Patrick van Aanholt (5.0)’s attacking instincts – which engendered five assists in the previous campaign – are set to be reined in by Advocaat, reducing his prospects further as we look to bail out on the Black Cats backline.

Depay scores 2 playing against a Belgium side that failed at the same point in a lesser competition last year (3rd qualifying round of Europa League) and he's suddenly in a lot of teams.

I just don't see it, last night he was playing against a European team who's style he is used to from his time in Holland where he had a lot more time and space on the ball.

People may point me to that post about the amount of shots he's had so far, doesn't give the full picture imo. Can have shots from anywhere and in a league where you won't be given as much time and space I wonder how many of those shots we're actually realistic opportunities.

Not worth the risk at the moment, he hasn't shown he can do it in a faster paced league so far, until he does I'm staying well clear.

still think the point is valid though, he is comfortable playing against euro style teams.
PL is faster and less space, he got shut out loads of times against villa and didn't look good

I've watched the games willing Rooney to score and at least get in the box (being in my team) and realised that it is really Depay/Mata who get in the box. Rooney drops of and allows the space for them to run into.

With Depay on free kicks as well, i can see why people consider him, but i can understand you're gut feeling as adjusting to the league can be difficult. It can also help having scored your first goal...

YYT - better short term option if you can make good use of the 1.5M
Silva - possibly better long term and more consistent

Looking at their upcoming fixtures I'm going for YYT at the moment as he always does well against the 'lesser' teams but goes missing in the bigger games IMO.

Last season points per minute played:

      Silva - 0.072
      Yaya - 0.057

If they play all matches thats 50 points difference. 1,5 million vs 50 points.

    Everton v Man City

Reading the Man City forums this seams to be their bogey team
Some fans would be happy with a draw or any kind of a 1 goal win
Could we be left disapointed this week by captaining Aguero etc?

Interesting. I have Cedric but am starting to lose faith in him and southampton defence! I should keep the faith then? Agreed on Kolarov tho sadly, when CL comes along, Clichy might get the easier games and therefore more cleansheet points

No but the quality of opposition does have to be taken into account. I really don't think they looked like a premier league team but maybe they just had an off day away from home in a different country. They could be totally different at home tbf

Cools made one mistake after the other, he isn't first team material, and certainly not any PL team material. The point here is that he will face better or more experienced defenders in the Premier League than against Brugge. I wouldn't rate Brugge higher than any Premier League club atm

Not at all. I think Club Brugge may be at a similar level to the top Eredivisie sides, but there is no way he will replicate his goal frequency from the Dutch league in the EPL. In my opinion.

Very realistic to achieve imo pompey but I do think his output won't max out until after utds tough run of fixtures coming up. I have him as a top priority once the fixt ease around gw 11 (might be a nice time to wc as chelsea fixt ease then too 😉 )

what might be more relevant is that the PL is different to other leagues in terms of space and pace of the matches. He has had similar spacial opportunities to last night in the PL but has been closed down with more success. He will score goals though, and it's ridiculous to suggest otherwise. It's just that with Utd's tactics, i'm not sure whether he will score that much

He was very unlucky v villa with the shot that flashed just wide. If he had scored that and got 10 points you would not be saying he hasn't shown much so far. I think he is still settling in and if he can get more game time on the left fwd position he will be very good value long term although I'd be sceptical in the short term.

I would agree with you re the composure but I think it is a bit harsh to criticise the technique and the positional nous (anytime I had seen him previously he did have a penchant for the offside flag though). Once the fixt ease I think he could quite easily prove to be a utd theo walcott except nailed to start.

He really reminds me of a not quite as quick theo but with better long shots, free kicks and a better passer/crosser. WIth utd's horror run for the 7 weeks after NEW I won't be going near though so we should have plenty of time to asses before we get him in (and hopefully he will be down to a nice price by then too 😉 )

    To summerise:

"Importantly, it doesn't seem like there will be any blank weeks immediately before a DGW, but there will be potential blanks the week after DGWs, so if you are planning to WC to utilise a DGW, your best bet is going to be to WC GW36, then you will have the DGW week 37 (to use bench boost chip), and then only DGW38 to negotiate (which tends to be a lottery anyway), while Triple Captain chip can either be used GW34, or for a League Cup finalist DGW pre-GW27........"

    Romero / McCarthy

    Kolarov / Richards / Muniesa / Francis / Targett

    Haz / Sanchez / Depay / Mahrez / Westwood

    Wilson / Aguero / Benteke

I know the defence is a bit weak but i figure I have two of the "big teams" in Koloarov & Romero and then Richards , Muniesa & Francis can all rotate with the fixtures ok.
