As we’ve discussed previously, our approach to the weekly games is slightly different this year. Armed with an opening pot of £100 for each game, I’ve been tasked with turning that cash into profit and will be updating you on my progress every Friday.

Gameweek 2 was a rewarding week for strikers in PlayON, with four forwards scoring over 2000 points – with Romelu Lukaku leading the way on 2945 points. Only Riyad Mahrez scored similar, with 2360 points from midfield emphasising the importance of getting those front two spots filled with the right players each week.

Christian Benteke also notched over 2000 points but, along with Lukaku, has a tougher fixture this week as they face Arsenal and Manchester City respectively. Sergio Aguero and Stoke’s Mame Diouf were the other two big scorers last weekend and could be the ones to back again ahead of trips to Everton and Norwich respectively.

For the upcoming weekend, as mentioned in the Weekly Shop article I’m predominantly including Manchester United, West Ham and Crystal Palace assets further back in the teams with various combinations from those defences that look to have a potential clean sheet coming up. In midfield I’ve picked the likes of Juan Mata, Dimitri Payet and Yohan Cabaye, all of whom could build on decent PlayON scores last week.

The Bottom Line

A second week without results in PlayON, managing only mid-table finishes in the free entry and the £1.10 contests. I did at least win something, a wonderful £0.05 arriving back in the pot from a 28th place finish out of the 819 entries for the Monday Night freeroll.

Gameweek 1 Stake – £3.10
Winnings – £0.05
Current Pot – £82.90

This Week’s Stake

After an unfavourable start to the season, I’m focusing on low fee contests and free games as I work to build my pot back up.

Weekly – I’ve entered the maximum possible five teams for the £100 freeroll pot, which covers all ten of the rounds fixtures. I’ve also entered two teams for £1.10 apiece into the £100 guaranteed game and taken up a challenge against OptaJoe for another £1.10. I will also check near the deadline if there are any £0.27 and £0.55 games near to being filled and if so put a few teams into those.

Daily – Five entries go into each of the £25 free pot games that are available for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Total Stake: £3.30
As a PlayON Pro it’s possible for you to challenge me one-on-one in all four timeframes, these games are not included in the £100 challenge and operate separately. You can also take on other PlayON Pros, current FPL champion Simon March and OptaJoe.

I think so now. This one was so over the line all I felt was disappointment. The umpires have just become lazy.

I think I'm (mostly) set on my wildcard team now, couldn't be more FFS template.

    Myhill - McCarthy

Kompany - Shaw - Williams (Francis Gomez)

Sanchez - Silva - Payet - Mahrez (Surman)

    Aguero - Gomis - Diouf

Going on holiday in the early hours so don't want to spend TOO much more time on it. I'd love to go Kolarov but want to play safe. If he nails down that LB spot then I'll regret it but there's always the downgrade option.

I think Gomez is a risk, and really don’t see him starting in a few weeks but given his price and Liverpool’s home fixtures I’m willing to take the risk with 4 defenders who should be mostly nailed on.

Last thing I’m worried about is flexibility. If any of the 8-9.5m strikers start scoring then I’m quite inflexible to get them in without downgrading Sanchez. Then again I think Ozil/Ramsey might be good options so there is some flexibility but it would take a couple of transfers.

That team leaves me with 0.6m in the bank, maybe should have mentioned that....

Out of interest what would you downgrade in defence and where would you upgrade?

Williams to a 4.5 or a 4.5 to a 4.0 imo. Gives you more wiggle room when you want to get in the likes of Costa, Benteke, Giroud, Kane, Hazard, etc.

That move would only really help with Hazard if I wanted him in for Sanchez. Otherwise I'm still 2-3 moves away from getting any of those players with just one defensive downgrade.

Maybe Shaw needs to go.... 🙂

Only need to play McCarthy twice in next 9 weeks (starting this weekend) so if he does lose his place it's not the end of the world.

Foster due back around October potentially? At that point the rotation starts to dry up anyway so can make a transfer if needed.

Yeah that sounds fair enough I guess! With every game McCarthy gets his price is likely to rise as well, which is nice. YOu've given me something to think about!

Foster probably November so that's 10-12 games away. He could then upgrade McCarthy or Myhill to Foster.

McCarthy is the GK Pardew bought when he already had Speroni and Hennessey. It may have been because he expected Hennessey to go to WBA. But I think the GK he bought is probably the one he'll prefer.

I agree that there's not really a problem with Myhill but do you think it's possible that Pardew may ease McCarthy in this season, once Speroni's fit, considering his relative inexperience at this level?

No. If he has already played the first 4/5 games he'll probably keep the spot unless he loses form. He'll already be eased in as it were.

Yes. But try to find 0.5 for Johnson. His extra attacking points will pay for it.

Then you will have a team even more like mine. 🙁

                        Why the sad face?!

If it makes you feel better or worse I'm looking at downgrading Shaw to afford Diouf to Pelle 🙂

                        • 10 Years
                        10 years, 4 months ago

I'd downgrade Shaw to Johnson and upgrade Gomis to Pelle instead. Keep Diouf, Stoke's fixture run is almost as kind as Southampton's first 3 months was last season.

The sad face is because I don't like having a "template" team and I worked mine out without reference to anything on here. But that's the problem with having wildcarded now. The realistic options are very narrowed by what we currently know and the immediate fixture runs.

I think 3 City is almost a must. I think 2 Stoke is almost a must considering value and fixtures. I think Payet and Mahrez are almost a must because of value and fixtures too. (Almost) everyone will have a 4.5 mid and which one is immaterial. That's 8/15 slots accounted for.

So that means more than half of the squad slots are going to be common and we are probably only talking about 1 striker, 1 midfielder, the defensive rotation and the GKs as the points of variance.

My only departure from what appears to be template is (a) no Swansea, and (b) no Arsenal attackers. But if someone put Ozil in my team instead of the 8.5 I have chosen I wouldn't mind too much and if I found Gomis there on Saturday I wouldn't mind too much either.

I guess the variance will come in where each goes with it week by week.

Cheers for the thoughts. I think I'll keep Diouf but I also like Gomis so will probably just stick with my current strikeforce.

I'll look into Stoke some more though....and Sagna!

Sagna is a trap. Zabaleta wasn't ready 1st game. Sagna was played against Hazard last season too. Can't read anything into that about Pellegrini's future intentions.

Zabaleta will be the first change to the city back 4 I think. Maybe not this weekend though.

It's interesting how the price falls have forced so many people's hands this week in terms of WC'ing. Still maintain Gomis and Diouf will be out of most teams in 3-4 weeks.

That said,Darmian or Shaw/Kompany/Silva/Sanchez/Aguero are a solid enough base for the season.

          Consider this or not?
          Who?
Just a point on defenders I've dug out this 4 way rotation:
Swans/Sto/Lei/Cry you could just start Kol plus one of the above bearing in mind palace/Stoke ; leic/Swans rotate perfect for 38 weeks you always have 2 'home' teams,
If persay you want to keep 2-5.5 def (Kol/Darmian) you could go with a decent 3 way rotation of Leicester/Palace/Villa by playing either def method mentioned you have back up if Kol gets a rest,
Adding Gomez to the mix complicated things unless he's nailed and I'm starting to wonder if Lovern may be worth the 5.0 over him, he seems nailed.
          I've 2 issues to sort
          - Def ?
          - 6.5 or Lukaku?

            Leic/palace/villa
            Leic/Wat/Villa
            Leic/Palace/Stoke

Shaw to Muniesa allows me Diouf to Pelle.....

I can't believe how many price falls there have been this season/week! What are FPL trying to do to us!? Do you think it's an attempt to keep the overall 'cost' under control so as to keep casuals interested for longer? (that's what most rule changes seem to try and do)

Anyway, it's pretty annoying as effectively has the same effect as players you don't own rising...

I think it's seemed crazy as it's been the big name players that have been dropping.

Usually there's one or two big names that haven't performed and dropped early season.

This year it's been most big names that haven't performed and dropped so it's been more noticeable imo.

Never seen a season like it.

I know the boat may have passed but is Shaw and Darmian too much?
Other options are 1 of Bell/Kos/Williams/Azpi, I think there may be more to cs than these 2 wingers,
Crazy or worth a punt, can easily change to the above mentioned easily.

It really could be worth a punt, especially for this Gw. Can see us winning maybe 2-0 this time. Darmian and Shaw could get baps once more. Can easily take one out in the weeks to come.

Depends on whether Alex Song passes his medical and whether Saints make it to the Europa group stages. I'd say Oxford only really has this week left as a starter and might be injured any way. Targett could get the odd game if Koeman follows the trend of rotating fullbacks after European games.
I currently have Oxford but think I've just talked myself into bringing in Targett!

    Courtois (McCarthy)
    Darmian, Kolorov, Williams (Prödl, Richards)
    Yaya, Depay, Payet, Shelvey (Westwood)
    Aguero, Kane, Pelle

Posted about this earlier - if you look at stats then WBA concede a lot of shots from outside the box, resulting in saves for Myhill and potential baps. Fixtures are worse though and there's always the possibility they sign Marshall now that his ban is over (was suspended GWs 1-2).

    3. Ludo
      • 12 Years

      Myhill.

Averaged over 5 points and saves per game last season, and looks like keeping that up already this time out.

Get McCarthy to play this week, then he has this run:

      sto/SOU/avl/EVE/cpl/SUN/nor/LEI

West Brom can (and will) get CS against anyone, and as Pulis doesn't let them pass the ball, and Myhill racks up the saves, the keeper will come away with all the bonus points as well!

Simply put, as long as he's in the team, everything suggests he'll comfortably be the highest scoring keeper in the game if you play him every week, and he's only 4.5. If you need to use a transfer on him, then so be it, but he's worth enjoying while it lasts imo.

That would require everyone who has scored well so far too continue doing so and nobody else to emerge. Not likely. Too many people are chasing points, or so it seems to me.

      1. Bubz
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

There's a difference between chasing points and going with the players that show the most promise through their stats. Buying Mahrez looks like chasing points, but his stats are incredible, it would be foolish not to buy him. Just because he has scored in previous gameweeks doesn't make it any less likely he will score in future gameweeks.
