As we’ve discussed previously, our approach to the weekly games is slightly different this year. Armed with an opening pot of £100 for each game, I’ve been tasked with turning that cash into profit and will be updating you on my progress every Friday.

Gameweek 2 was a rewarding week for strikers in PlayON, with four forwards scoring over 2000 points – with Romelu Lukaku leading the way on 2945 points. Only Riyad Mahrez scored similar, with 2360 points from midfield emphasising the importance of getting those front two spots filled with the right players each week.

Christian Benteke also notched over 2000 points but, along with Lukaku, has a tougher fixture this week as they face Arsenal and Manchester City respectively. Sergio Aguero and Stoke’s Mame Diouf were the other two big scorers last weekend and could be the ones to back again ahead of trips to Everton and Norwich respectively.

For the upcoming weekend, as mentioned in the Weekly Shop article I’m predominantly including Manchester United, West Ham and Crystal Palace assets further back in the teams with various combinations from those defences that look to have a potential clean sheet coming up. In midfield I’ve picked the likes of Juan Mata, Dimitri Payet and Yohan Cabaye, all of whom could build on decent PlayON scores last week.

The Bottom Line

A second week without results in PlayON, managing only mid-table finishes in the free entry and the £1.10 contests. I did at least win something, a wonderful £0.05 arriving back in the pot from a 28th place finish out of the 819 entries for the Monday Night freeroll.

Gameweek 1 Stake – £3.10
Winnings – £0.05
Current Pot – £82.90

This Week’s Stake

After an unfavourable start to the season, I’m focusing on low fee contests and free games as I work to build my pot back up.

Weekly – I’ve entered the maximum possible five teams for the £100 freeroll pot, which covers all ten of the rounds fixtures. I’ve also entered two teams for £1.10 apiece into the £100 guaranteed game and taken up a challenge against OptaJoe for another £1.10. I will also check near the deadline if there are any £0.27 and £0.55 games near to being filled and if so put a few teams into those.

Daily – Five entries go into each of the £25 free pot games that are available for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Total Stake: £3.30
As a PlayON Pro it’s possible for you to challenge me one-on-one in all four timeframes, these games are not included in the £100 challenge and operate separately. You can also take on other PlayON Pros, current FPL champion Simon March and OptaJoe.

Glad I kept ahold of my FT this week.

    Mert to Sagna.

More chance of a clean sheet than playing Liverpool I think (as bad as they've been). Only been 4 clean sheet between arsenal and Liverpool in the last 10 seasons in the PL.

Sagna seems to be a very cheap option into the Man City defence in Zabas absence.

I think Toure might be used a little more sparingly this year. He looked tired against Chelsea in the second half and he is getting on a little bit. He is still brilliant but no point running him into the ground. Delph may play Fernandinhos role and then Fernandinho play a more attacking position like Toure.

Very unlikely he'll displace him in the starting lineup. Will likely be there to rotate in cup games and sub on when games are won. Could actually be good for Yaya owners thinking about it!

    Just an observation with United.

It seems that the United attack are more focused on maintaining shape, keeping possession and adhering to the filoshofee than actually scoring goals. Rooney in particular is guilty of this I think, he needs to learn the mindset of a striker in this system and I'm not sure how easily he can adapt.

    1. HamezMace
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

I agree, I have watched all of Utds games so far this season and Rooney spends more time coming deep for the ball, or drifting out wide than he does in the box.

That said I still stand by what I have said previously and that if Utd are to finish top 4 they will need 20+ goals from him.

His mindset is not that of a #9 though when its natural for him to drop deep and help keep possession etc. Its like he's trying to be a #10 and a #9 at the same time, it just doesn't work.

Its already clear from LVG's press conferences when Januzaj got that goal last week, LVG almost dismissed it and said he didn't play that well and that that was a concern. The focus is entirely on how they play and very little emphasis seems to be on scoring goals.

Depay is new so he hasn't been tarnished by the LVG brush yet, his freshness will really help United as he will drive forward and be a key goal scorer for United.

I don't think adapt is the right word here. If you look at those seasons he's played spearheading tye attack he's been full of goals.

But, it's been a good 3-4(?) years since he's done that and I fear it's the lack of playing that role in recent years that's the issue. Almost like he's forgotten how to play as an out and out no9

Yeah certainly, he was a great striker when he was younger but years learning to be a midfielder has taken away that strikers instinct. He's very much a #10 now I think as a result.

Also when I use the word adapt, its adapting to a striker role under LVG's possession philosophy. Rooney was a great striker under SAF's more direct attacking style.

Pellegrini specifically mentions that Kompany and Mangala can't be dropped in current form.

No mention of Kolarov. Maybe Pellegrini doesn't think his form warrants any mention. Clichy to start one of next 2!

Well he was addressing Otamendi specifically, so talking about Kolarov wouldn't really be relevant.

Anyone who thinks Kolarov wont get rotated are the same people who bought Walcott I bet.

Of course Kola will get rotated, but Clishy usually plays the tougher away games while Kola plays easier home games where his attacking atributes are needed, and with a good 4.5 backup i think its worthed to risk it.

He probably just addressed the centre back situation directly since they signed Otamendi for £32 mill.

Think Sagna could hold that right back spot for a while even after Zaba returns right ?

Sagna been been solid so far and Zaba comming from copa america and injury cant see him getting straight into the team

Zaba straight back into the team once he's fit.

Wasnt Zaba named best RB a couple times over the last few years? I think he is straight in when he is fit.

      A nice little tactic.

Be crap all season, sack whoever it is, hire messiah to keep them up, sack him next season, hire new messiah.

The club has developed a culture within its squad of having zero ambition beyond being premier league footballers earning good money who can be celebrity big shots in the night clubs of the north east.

Di canio was a bit nuts but he dared asked them to push themselves and aim higher and focus only on football but they decided that they werent willing to give a different idea a chance as the current attitude has served them so well with trophy returns for 50 years.

They only try when their status of being premierleague players is at stake as it might affect their wages

I have to agree with this. I remember all sorts of quotes and write ups of how this attitude was shaken up by Di Canio. He might have been heavy handed but the club and its players had become complacent and were only going through the motions. Something needed to be done and Di Canio tried his best.

I think Martin O'Neill was the last time. Maybe they should relegate and come back the season after. A fresh start!

Still conflicted. What midfielder around 7 mill would you choose short term?(next 3-4 matches):

    A) Chadli
    B) Ayew
    C) Tadic
    D) Other

Take into account I already have Gomis but no other Tottenham or Southampton players

Thinking of shipping him in after Arsenal game in GW5 if he does well until then. I admire the managers who have the guts to pick him before seeing how he handles PL. Im not one of those 🙂
