We call upon a trip of lesser-owned midfielders for your perusal this morning as we scour the market for some overlooked weekend options. Arsenal’s home clash with Liverpool brings a certain Welshman to our attentions, whilst we have our eye on a couple of options for Norwich’s head-to-head with Stoke at Carrow Road.

Aaron Ramsey

For those Fantasy managers searching for a cheaper source of Arsenal coverage than the 11.0-priced Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey (8.5) could be the solution. Having been fielded in a deeper-lying role for the Gunners’ season-opener against West Ham United, the Wales international was stationed on the right flank at Selhurst Park, resulting in double the volume of attempts (four up from two). Furthermore, only Sanchez (six) and Philippe Coutinho (four) fired off more shots inside the box than Ramsey (three) in the previous Gameweek.

Although Arsenal’s next test is a home tie against a Liverpool side that’s yet to concede, Arsene Wenger’s troops rattled four past the Reds in the corresponding fixture last term and boasted an average of 2.15 goals per game at the Emirates. In addition, Liverpool conceded more goals away from home (28) than the likes of Hull City and Sunderland last season, so Ramsey will confident of finding space between the lines to carve out shooting opportunities.

Nathan Redmond

Priced at just 5.5, Redmond bagged two goals in as many matches, tallying 11 points in his first start of the season against Sunderland last week. The England U21 international proved to be a thorn in the Black Cats’ side, ranking fifth among midfielders for penalty box touches (seven) last Gameweek and tallying two shots inside the box.

Canaries boss Alex Neil recently spoke on the rapid improvement of Redmond over the past six months – a notion that is bolstered by the increase in his attacking output. Redmond has notched five goals in his last six appearances for the Canaries, perhaps reflecting an evolution in his game than a rare purple patch.

Norwich’s excellent run of fixtures lends greater value to the recruitment of their attacking assets. Aside from home ties against Stoke and Bournemouth in the next three Gameweeks, it’s not until a Gameweek 11 clash against Manchester City that Redmond would face one of the Premier League sides that finished in the top six last season.

Xherdan Shaqiri

After missing out last week due to suspension, Stoke’s marquee signing Xherdan Shaqiri looks in line for his debut bow away to Norwich later this afternoon. Slotting into a side that chalked up two more big chances (five) than any other side in Gameweek 2, the Swiss international could cause all manner of problems for the Premier League new boys with his fleet-footed trickery.

Notwithstanding his lack of playing time (747 minutes) at Inter Milan, Shaqiri posted some eye-catching underlying statistics. A shot frequency of one every 24.9 minutes would have bettered all midfielders in England’s top tier last term, with Alexis Sanchez (25.4) coming closest to the Switzerland international. Moreover, Shaqiri’s key pass frequency (22 minutes) would also have placed him top in the distribution charts ahead of Mesut Ozil (27.8), underlining his latent potential to deliver strong attacking returns

Beyond the Canaries match-up, Stoke embark on a quartet of fixtures (WBA, ars, LEI, BOU) that includes three favourable meetings at the Britannia Stadium. With many Fantasy managers playing their Wildcard this week and plumping for the likes of Andre Ayew and Nacer Chadli at his price bracket, the 7.0-priced Shaqiri represents an alluring leftfield alternative.

    Ruddy/Butland
    Kompany, Cresswell, Cedric (Richards, Huth)
    Silva, Payet, Ayew, Mahrez (Obertan)
    Aguero, Gomis, Diouf

4.3 in the bank, could do Ayew to Sanchez, which i plan to do next week at the latest.

If I'm on WC should I have Morgan as my fifth defender or should i drop him for someone else because he may drop in price soon... I can afford Richards but I like rotating Naughton and Morgan. This will be my final post until price rises tmrw

    Mccarthy (Butland)

Kolarov - Williams - Darmian (Gomez, Richards)

Yaya - Payet - Sanchez - Mahrez (Westwood)

If you think he'll do well enough, personally not overly keen on Depay yet.

Was ideally hoping silva wouldn't price rise and I could have Depay for one week and then get silva but 0.1m short now. Unless I just switch Lovren to Gomez but Lovren stats are better

Think I'm set on the WC team, any thoughts appreciated:

    Butland, McCarthy
    Kolarov, Gomez, Muniesa, Prodl, Targett
    Silva, Sanchez, Hazard, Mahrez, Westwood
    Aguero, Gomis, Deeney

.2 in bank, plan to ride Gomez price rises during his 3 good fixtures then cash in and use the profit to turn Targett into someone that plays.

That keen on doubling on Stoke? Personally i'd turn Muniesa into Huth/Morgan

Kudos on fitting in Silva/Sanchez/Hazard & Aguero

Mines similar but Hazard is Depay this week and got cash left over for Haz if he explodes

Not overly keen on the double Stoke but they have very good fixtures. I had a look at various options and Stoke fit well in terms of fielding 3 with reasonable fixtures each week.

      Keepers good.
Defence is flimsy. Kolarov, Gomez and Targett aren't entirely nailed on and also Stoke and Watford aren't the best. Double Stoke defence?
Silva, Sanchez, Aguero and Hazard isn't too good of a strategy imo because you aren't going to captain all of them enough for them to be good value.

See above re Stoke. Open to suggestions to replace Muniesa. Watford's defensive stats are surprisingly good.

It is a good strategy because they all score lots of points 😉

Due to the over compensation in attack I feel it might be best to sacrifice kolarov for sagna and use the other 0.5 to upgrade prodl /muniesa for Williams....

Do you expect Gomez to rise by 0.6 so you can get 0.3 from selling? Without the 0.5 ITB You might struggle to upgrade Targett to a playing 4.5m defender.

Seems an unnecessary risk in my opinion, if you could sacrifice silva for yaya you would have around 1.5 ITB for defence upgrades or just general flexibility.

I think only prodl is nailed out of that defence, worse case scenario you could have McCartney, kolorov, gomez, muniesa and targett all dropped the same week.

    Wild card team

    Butland, 4.0
    Target, Shaw, Gomez, williams, richards
    Sanchez, Silva, Depay, Mahrez, 4.5
    Aguero, Gomiz, Wilson
    (2.7 in the bank)

Now I desperately want to insert Costa or Hazard in this....!!!!!

Can you afford costa if you do silva > yaya, gomis > Costa?

Or prepare to do what Milanista said after gw3 by doing Williams > 4.5 on wildcard then do depay > hazard next week.

I would say they are about even, but I guess with City's fixtures they could get more CS's short term then Swansea. But with International break, Zaba will only miss 3-4 GW's. So Sagna is a transfer waiting to happen.

But there are about 7-8 variations to what is considered template.

    1. Louis99
      • 11 Years

      Ruddy - Butland
      Kolarov - Darmian - Williams - Gomez - Targett
      Sanchez - Silva - Mahrez- Payet - 4.5
      Aguero - Gomis - Benteke

I reckon that's a good shot at 'the' template team

  27. GiantHobbit

    Schmeichel / McCarthy
Darmian / Cedric / Gomes - Ward / Steven Taylor
    Fabregas / Yaya / Payet / Sanchez / Mahrez
    Pelle / Aguero - Agbonglahor

    Good enough for a WC?

Thinking about Cedric - Sagna since Zaba is injured

Not keen on Agbonglahor but I guess you're playing 3-5-2.

I haven't seen many with Schmeichel and McCarthy do they rotate well?

      Looks good though overall.

Any thoughts on my team as I seem to have lost the ability to form an opinion or make a decision? Also would like to go 3-4-3 but people keep mentioning 3-5-2 so can I have permission from someone as to which formation to go with?

    GK
mid table goalie who has bad haircut / cheap goalie who gets replaced when 1st teamer comes back
    DEF
Young top 6 defender who is cheap / cheapest defender who gets mentioned most in the comments / 6 mil defender from top team/ 5 mil defender from team who will end up 8th / defender who appears most in other rmt teams
    MID
Luxury midfielder / luxury midfielder / mid range midfielder who will 'come good' / midfielder who scored a couple so is a 'must have' / cheap midfielder because i have no cash left
    ATT
Striker everyone has / Striker who has just moved so must score / striker who you know is a bit crap but again no cash

Thanks in advance all! If it doesn't work out then I'll blame myself several times in posts for not following the trends in here enough and not 'listening'

Rather than looking to make a decision of formations, make a decision between two players - ie your midfielder in a 352 against your forward in a 343
