Scott Sinclair scores three times as Villa book their place in the third round of the Capital One Cup. Jermain Defoe and Leicester youngster Joe Doodoo also bag hat-tricks. Junior Stanislas nets twice for Bournemouth, Florin Thauvin sparkles on his first start for Newcastle, whilst Bojan makes his long-awaited return from injury in a night where many top-flight managers hand their squad players a chance to impress.

Sinclair Hat-Trick Seals it for Villa

Tim Sherwood made nine changes from the side that lost at Palace last weekend, with only Jack Grealish and Carlos Sanchez retaining their places. This saw the likes of Jordan Veretout and Jordan Ayew handed starting berths after both dropped to the bench at the weekend.

With the match all square at 3-3 after 90 minutes, the Villains scored twice in extra time to emerge as 5-3 victors over League Two club Notts County. Scott Sinclair rounded off a hat-trick with a penalty, having netted twice in the second half.

Sinclair started Villa’s opening two league ties but was replaced by Grealish for their trip to Crystal Palace. The latter brings a much-needed creative spark to the their set-up – as evidenced by his two assists against Notts County – so one would imagine that Sinclair will continue to be utilised as an impact sub.

Adama Traore – who Sherwood recently revealed is short of fitness – scored during his 60-minute stint at Villa Park, bolstering his case for increased league minutes over the coming weeks. Carles Gil, meanwhile, made his first appearance of the new campaign following his recovery from a hamstring complaint, lasting 100 minutes before being replaced by the scorer of Villa’s fifth goal, Joe Bennett.

Foxes youngster in the Goals

Claudio Ranieri made 11 changes as Leicester City recorded a 4-1 victory over League One outfit Bury. Summer signings Christian Fuchs, N’Golo Kante, Gokhan Inler and Yohan Benaloune were handed the full 90 minutes as the Italian utilised the strength and depth of his first-team squad.

Young Joe Dodoo stole the headlines after notching a hat-trick and an assist on his debut. The 20-year-old tallied seven goals in 19 outings for the Foxes U21 side last term and could be considered for a bench role if Claudio Ranieri deems him ready to make the step up.

Andrej Kramaric scored the visitors’ other goal, while Leonardo Ulloa turned provider for Dodoo’s third strike. The former is yet to feature at all in the league this term, while the latter came on for the final minute against Tottenham Hotspur, with Jamie Vary and Shinji Okazaki looking favourites to start up top again away to Bournemouth.

Much-Changed Palace Ease Through

Alan Pardew made nine changes from the side that beat Villa at the weekend, with Joel Ward and Wilfried Zaha the only survivors. Pape Souare earned an assist after coming on for Ward at the break, while Patrick Bamford was handed the lone forward role and clocked 74 minutes pitch time before making way for Glenn Murray.

The Eagles racked up three goals in extra time to secure a 4-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town at Selhurst Park. Dwight Gayle’s restored parity in the first half with a spot-kick, before Murray (penalty), Lee Chung-Yong and Zaha put the tie out of reach in the additional periods.

Stanislas Impresses in Cherries Win

Eddie Howe rung the changes Bournemouth’s 4-0 win over Hartlepool, with Matt Ritchie – who entered the fray in the 77th minute – the only notable first-teamer to make the pitch at Victoria Park. Yann Kermorgant opened the scoring, before Dan Gosling double their lead just four minutes later. The 4.4-priced Junior Stanislas netted either side of the half to apply some gloss to the scoreline and staked a claim for further pitch time by also supplying an assist.

Club-record signing Tyrone Mings donned the Cherries strip for his debut at left-back, with the likes of fellow new boys Sylvain Distin and Christian Atsu also playing from start to finish.

Potters Taken to Spot-Kicks

Mark Hughes made nine changes from the side that drew at Norwich last week, with Marko Arnautovic and Erik Pieters the men to retain their places. Bojan returned to first-team action for the first time since January as he steps up his recovery from a knee injury, whilst Jon Walters recovered from the illness that kept him out of the Carrow Road showdown.

Walters grabbed Stoke’s only goal but the Potters were taken to spot-kicks by Luton before triumphing 8-7. Bojan managed 87 minutes as he steps up his fitness and could be pushing for a role on the bench for this weekend’s home derby with West Brom.

Thauvin Makes his Mark

The Magpies made nine changes from the weekend trip to United, with Ayoze Perez and Massadio Haidara keeping their places. Perez was shifted to the central striker role, having started on the right flank at Old Trafford, but it was new boy Florian Thauvin (6.5) who was the star of the show as Newcastle recorded a comfortable 4-1 victory over Northampton. The French winger opened the scoring after three minutes with an acrobatic volley, before bagging a hat-trick of assists as Siem de Jong, Daryl Janmaat and Mike Williamson extended the Magpies lead. Having handed Thauvin a 22-minute cameo against Manchester United, Steve McClaren will surely be tempted to start him ahead of the underwhelming Gabriel Obertan against Arsenal.

Janmaat’s goal serves as a reminder of his capacity for attacking returns. The 4.9-priced left-back – who was absent from the Red Devils clash due to suspension – tallied an eye-watering eight assists last season but was hampered by the Magpies’ lacklustre defensive record. If McClaren’s troops can build upon their well-drilled display at Old Trafford, Janmaat could well shoot onto our radar.

Britos Off in Hornets Loss

Quique Sanchez Flores made wholesale changes for the trip to Preston but the Hornets second-string failed to take their chances, slipping to a 1-0 loss at Deepdale.

Miguel Layun returned to the XI after dropping to the bench for the weekend draw with Southampton, whilst Flores afforded the likes of Matej Vydra, Almen Abdi, Nathan Ake and Steven Berghuis pitch time. New boy Miguel Britos had a disastrous debut. Having served a two-match ban at the start of the season, he is now set for a further three fixtures on the sidelines after being dismissed in the second-half for violent conduct.

Howson in the Goals for Canaries

The Canaries gained entry into the Third Round courtesy of goals from Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Jonny Howson in a 2-1 win at Rotherham. Alex Neil named just three of the starting XI that drew with Stoke last Gameweek, affording Howson, Sebastien Bassong and Graham Dorrans their second run-out in five days. Garry Hooper and Lewis Grabban were both absent from the matchday squad amid rumours that they’re set for moves to Sheffield Wednesday and Bournemouth, respectively, in the coming days.

Defoe at the Treble

The Black Cats played out a nine-goal thriller at the Stadium of Light, recording a 6-3 win over League Two outfit Exeter. Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick to boost his tally to five goals in four matches. The 5.5-priced striker has clearly found his groove in these early stages, rendering the former Spurs stalwart a viable alternative to Callum Wilson in the budget bracket.

Jack Rodwell also cashed in with two strikes of his own, while Duncan Watmore made it two goals in three outings as he steps up his claim for a starting berth in the absence of Adam Johnson.

The top-tier side made hard work of the lower-league opposition, despite having made just two changes to the XI that drew with Swansea City last time out – with Adam Matthews and Sebastian Larsson coming in for Billy Jones and Jeremain Lens. Dick Advocaat will certainly be concerned that his defence – whatever the composition – have failed to offer their goalkeeper enough protection, shipping 11 goals across four fixtures ahead of the weekend trip to Villa.

Ki Returns to Action in Swans Stroll

The Swans eased into the next stage by way of a 3-0 home win over York. Marvin Emnes, Matt Grimes and Nathan Dyer did the damage at the Liberty Stadium, after head coach Garry Monk named an entirely different starting XI from that which faced Sunderland.

Encouragingly for Monk, Ki Sung-Yeung made his return from injury after limping off with a hamstring problem in the season opener at Chelsea. The Korean was afforded 81 minutes before making way for Jonjo Shelvey and will be hoping to partner the former Liverpool player against United this weekend, with Jack Cork’s starting berth now looking at risk.

Shelvey – who has produced more key passes than any player in the league so far – continued his impressive start to the season by bagging the assist for the Swans’ third goal of the night, while Andre Ayew came on for the final five minutes.

Blunt Baggies Scrape Through

The Baggies beat Port Vale 5-3 on penalties after both sides failed to score during the preceding 120 minutes. Tony Pulis fielded close to his first-choice starting XI against the League One team, with Salomon Rondon and Craig Dawson the only notable omissions. Chris Brunt will be monitored ahead of the trip to Stoke after limping off early on.

As such, the Baggies boss will doubtless be troubled by the fact his charges have drawn blanks in three of their previous four encounters. On the flip side, a second clean sheet over that period serves as encouragement for Boaz Myhill’s 3.5% ownership ahead of a trip to Stoke.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Saido Berahino – who was left out of the squad for the second match running – will complete a transfer to Tottenham before the window closes. West Brom officially announced that they’d rejected a second bid for the England U21 international, but Spurs are expected to soon launch a third bid in an attempt to land their man. Now down to 6.4 in FPL, Berahino would certainly arrive on our radars if he makes his way to the Lane, given that Harry Kane comes in at 9.5 in light of last season’s exploits.

Lots of people are asking who to bench. Personally, if you have a United defender; bench him!
As a United fan, our defence has looked balanced and sustained but there were glimpses of it falling apart. Montero vs Darmian will destroy Darmian and then crossing it in to Gomis vs Blind...

Ayew vs Shaw could also be an interesting in counter.

However, the point is: Swansea will score against us 🙁

Well I'm playing Darmian and Gomis and hope for the best. Could bench Darmian for Richards but that just feels madness.

  8. Statches or Matches?
    • 12 Years
    10 years, 3 months ago

    Stat-ches or matches?

We haven't had one of these for a while... but do you prefer cold-hard stats, or the instictive punters feeling about someone you've watched live?

Coutinho is a prime example for me.

No player has had more shots this season... not Aguero, not Depay, not Mahrez, not no-one! He's in the top 10 for shots in the box and shots on target. Brilliant! 🙂

Yet from watching him, I'm not sure I'd feel that confident owning him. He's a superb player, but he isn't a natural finisher imo. He seems to strike the ball better from 25 yards than from 12. If the ball fell to him in the box, I can see him scuffing it wide. For me, he sits with the likes of Silva and Sterling - very good players, but not finishers.

The opposite is players like Ramsey, Siggurdson, Cabaye, Yaya. The numbers probably don't show it yet, but over the course of a season, I'd expect them to score more from fewer shots. They might scuff it, they might not be pretty goals, but they'll beat the keeper.

So in the Coutinho example, which way do you go?

    A) Stat-ches........ Buy Coutinho, he'll turn those numbers into points?

    B) Matches....... Leave him alone. He's just not a goalscorer.

    Interesting case, Mr. Holmes. 🙂

There is a stat called shot-conversion you know.....

I think he meant the numbers don't show it yet because we are only 3 games in, not that there is no stat for conversion.....

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 3 months ago

No, he's probably right. But I suppose it's not a stat we focus on particularly often. Shots, SiB etc are easier for most to understand. But shot-conversion would show you Coutinho isn't a finisher, like he suggests. 🙂

Low accuracy (26.7%) and conversion rate (6.7%) is the key. Worth keeping an eye on though, especially as shots in the box / 90 mins played is actually decent. The key to getting him in before a good run could be if that accuracy number lifts. Seems too risky to own at the moment though, although not that different from Depay.

It was! Kinda a prime example though - he'll score worldies (if Cech isnt in goal) but not the simple ones!

        10 years, 3 months ago

Yeah agreed, a mix between the two is the ideal. If pushed, most people will fall one way or the other, and I think Coutinho is a good example. 🙂

      • 10 Years
      10 years, 3 months ago

      Yes, I agree.

Coutinho is Liverpool's best player I think. But I'm not convinced of him as a FPL asset.

Sigurdsson has been overshadowed so far this season by Ayew, Gomis, Montero. But he's the Swansea attacker I'd want if I was going to have one.

        • 12 Years
        10 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, me neither. If Firmino was cheaper, and had played a couple of games extra, I'd be tempted. All depends if I can get Benteke, but Coutinho never appeals to me really.

And yep - Siggy is definitely the forgotten man! He had a few nice long rangers vs Sunderland, but he wasn't as involved as I would've expected, considering he was #10. Ayew will be the one supporting Gomis in the box.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years
          10 years, 3 months ago

          Yes, but...

Montero and Ayew have been key players so far for Swansea. You could see teams putting more cover on them (especially Montero). That is likely to create more space for Siggy to exploit.

            • 12 Years
            10 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, I can see that. If he's under the radar for us, he'll be under the radar for opposition managers.

I wouldnt ever get Montero personally, but Ayew looks decent. Siggy appeals though - proven FPL quality, scores goals, decent price.. and a differential. Can't go far wrong with those qualities.

Stats, but it's about the way that you use them.

I don't look at the 'shots' statistic at all - long range goals are unpredictable, and it's simply not a reliable indicator of goals to come, perverse as that may seem.

'Shots in the box' is reliable, on the other hand. I look for lots of shots in the box, with a good proportion of those on target, and a decent amount of those actually finding themselves in the goal.

Coutinho has doubled his touches in the box and shots in the box per game, compared to last season, and it's difficult not to take notice of that. However, his Shot Accuracy and Goal Conversion remain very poor. Once he starts to convert his chances into goals, I'll jump right on board.

Thanks Ludo, good insight. 🙂 I always like to see the shot maps too, to see where those SiB and shots on target are coming from.

That final sentence is the key one though.. but I'd say "IF he starts to convert...".

The question is, will he? I'd like to think so, but watching him regularly, I'm not convinced.

Yep, shot maps are also key! I think a lot of criticism levelled at statistics is that a lot of the time, these are 'empty' statistics. Chances created is the best measure we have of someone's assist potential, but really, all it means is an action which led to another player taking a shot.

Now, if you're playing in the same team as someone wastefully blazing it over all the time, your Chances Created could look great - Luke Shaw's numbers could conceivably be boosted by him playing a short pass to Depay, who then proceeds to have a shot from distance.

Shots in the box is my favourite stat for that reason. You can't rely on statistically promising assisters as much as you can on statistically promising goalscorers, and goals also happen to get you more points! When you consider that Harry Kane was the only Forward with more than 5 goals to score more than once outside the box (he scored 2 from that range), I think it's safest to focus entirely on shots in the box. The only real exceptions are Yaya and Eriksen - who scored 5 and 6 goals from outside the box last season.

This is the table that I've just started to use with all of this in mind - http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/10468/ - the key to using it is to pay attention to Goal Conversion, Shot Accuracy and fixtures - everyone who features in it is at least a decent option.

I think in Coutinho's case he will start clicking well with Benteke & Firmino in a few weeks.
I think he will be a massive scorer this season, as will Benteke, but just missing a bit of understanding between them all at the moment.

        Or Adrian. Hmm...

He's in pole position to replace Mane, if ruled out today (unlikely).

If Mane's fit, I'm none the wiser. 😀

            Yep. It all fits nicely.

Who's Coutinho in for, for you? Have you got Mane?

Mane's explosiveness makes him dangerous to sell for me, but Couts is a good upgrade over the next 4. 😕

Has to be a mix of both for me 🙂

In regards to your Silva point, I'm actually convinced he is a good finisher, didn't have an abnormal number of shots last season yet still managed 12 goals. He places the ball instead of power 🙂

When we are speaking of Coutinho performance vs Arsenal dont forget that Arsenal put one of the worst defansive performances i have ever seen making a ot of mistakes, and he got a lot of opportunities to take defenders 1 on 1 on open space which is his strongest part so he looked extremely good.

Would compare this with Pedro performance vs WBA where WBA defenders lost a lot of balls at their own half creating opportunities for Pedro, Haz,Willian and Costa to counter 3v3 where their quality is best shown.

In less open games where opponent sit in front of their box he will probably look less appealing.

I've gone Depay to Countinho this week. There upcoming home fixtures and his ability on the ball around the edge of the box have decided it for me.

Question is, what kinds of things would look good when you watched them, but not translate into any stats at all? (Or translate into an obscure combination of difficult to interpret stats, which amounts to the same thing)

      "Getting into dangerous positions"?

      "Likes to drive at defenders"?

"Better from 25 yards than 12"?

"Makes me get up off my seat"?

      What would those things be?

But I'm going to try and stick with a few a captain options as possible. I'm pretty sure there was some research into last season... had you permanently left the armband on Hazard for the 38 GWs, it would most likely prove to score better than constantly chopping and changing.

Three things currently listening to the Scoutcast:

-The addition of Jonty has proved a masterstroke. I wasn't sure about it originally but he's grown with confidence in each episode. No longer a third wheel, more a member of a triumvirate.
-The dilemma of Payew is exactly that. Very tricky.
-WC'ers are generally happy but the inability to upgrade either of the two players above to Pedro could be a sticking point going forward.

Agree, one of Payet and Ayew, not both. Easy to do if you can go with Maherez as a play every week 4th mid

Yeah, I can't quite call it atm.

Might save 2 FTs for the International break. Could leave me with a poor week but gives more more flexibility and information long term.

    Ruddy (Rudd)
    Kolarov, Mertesacker, Cédric (Huth, Saylor)
    Silva, Ramsey, Ritchie, Mahrez (Westwood)
    Aguero, Pelle, Wilson

I have a whopping 5.7m in the bank so can get anyone for -4. Any suggestions? Is it worth ditching Ritchie even with the fixtures for someone like Pedro/Sanchez? His stats really have been poor.

Just on the stats topic higher up.

    My current stats based midfield

    Depay Shelvey Sanchez Mahrez

I put Shaqiri in for his debut but sadly his stats are pants ...so off he went.

Swap Shelvey for a City mid and that's pretty standard.

No City mid has stats as high as Shelvey

Depay's stats are almost identical to Coutinho's, but with less end product.

Yeah I know...well they are now after the Arsenal game. I did the Mahrez move before that game though.

I think Shaqiri's debut stats were affected by Stoke getting battered for about 75 mins.
3 home games should see things right

Then I'll bring him back in if he looks the beans in the stats.

Don't laugh but Oviedo. Class act and will get a run of games and gives you extra to punt around.

Another option for next week is to use 2 FTs and take a hit:

Zaha, Darmian, Coleman to Coutinho, Sagna and Targett.

How would you improve this squad?

    Hart/Butland
    Azpil/Francis/Gomez/Alderweild/Bellerin
    Ritchie/Yaya/Hazard/Mahrez/Hoolahan
    Defoe/Aguero/Gomis

        Bellerin>Kolarov

        £1.1 million in the bank

Isn't Montero on the other wing? I have Darmian on the bench for the same reason - he's a card magnet against the league's form winger. Shaw though I'd probably play.
