After quickly concluding a deal to bring Pedro to Stamford Bridge last week, following reported interest from Manchester United throughout the summer, Jose Mourinho immediately handed the Spaniard a starting role for the champions’ trip to West Brom.

It took the new signing just 84 minutes to provide a snapshot of what we can expect in the Premier League. Priced at 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Pedro scored the opening goal in the Blues’ 3-2 victory at the Hawthorns, while he also provided the assist for Diego Costa’s strike and earned maximum bonus points on Sunday afternoon.

Having served up a 13-point debut haul, Pedro been subject to a major bandwagon over the last three days, with 240,000 new owners acquired in FPL. With that in mind, we assess the Spaniard’s weekend display as Fantasy managers scramble for his signature.

Chelsea Average Positions versus West Brom

ta

Handed a role on the right of Mourinho’s default 4-2-3-1 set-up, Pedro (number 17) afforded the Blues a little more width than Eden Hazard (number 10) on the opposite flank, whereas Willian (hidden by Radamel Falcao’s number 9) dropped a little deeper in possession in his role behind Diego Costa (number 19).

What’s also noticeable here is that Branislav Ivanovic (number 2) was very withdrawn when on the ball in the right-back berth. Indeed, Cesar Azpilicueta (number 28) was on a par with his fellow full-back when on the ball at the Hawthorns.

Chelsea Involvement
ta

Looking at the involvement stats, Pedro saw far less of the ball than the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Hazard, with 92 and 91 touches respectively – his 54 touches were exactly the same as lone striker Costa. Whereas Fabregas and Hazard produced a touch every 1.0 and 1.1 minutes apiece, Pedro managed a touch every 1.6 minutes – of Chelsea’s ten outfield starters, only Kurt Zouma (1.7) and Ivanovic (2.0) were worse off here.

When you analyse the final third numbers, though, it’s a different story. Pedro jumps up to second behind Hazard for touches (34 to 40), and was again more or less identical to Costa (33).

In terms of frequency of passes received, once again Hazard (every 1.4) and Fabregas (every 1.5) are the main men here. Given that they ranked first and second for key passes (100 and 93) in 2014/15, it’s little surprise that Chelsea are looking to get the duo on the ball as much as possible.

Pedro, on the other hand, is no playmaker. He won’t hog the ball. Instead, his pace, intelligence and movement off the ball into space will be a key facet of the champions’ attack, with compatriot Fabregas explaining that he gives the Blues something different:

“I knew straight away that he would make an impact. It is something that we don’t have in our team, this pacey player that goes behind defenders, that goes one against one. He goes behind defences and stretches them, while Willian and Eden (prefer) the ball to their feet. The mentality of this guy is fantastic. I’m very happy for him.”

What is also noticeable is Ivanovic’s lack of impact as an attacking outlet from the right-back berth. Granted, there could be a number of reasons for this. It may be a lack of confidence after his poor displays in the first two matches or perhaps an indication that his partnership with Pedro on the flank will need more work. Alternatively, Mourinho may have simply told him to rein in his forward forays for now.

Nonetheless, in the final third, the Serbian was overshadowed by Azpilicueta for touches (nine to 12) and passes received (four to ten). Given that he averaged 26.5 touches and 13.5 passes received in the final third over the first two Gameweeks, though, Sunday saw a significant drop-off.

Chelsea Distribution
ta

Looking at the distribution stats, Pedro’s numbers are once again more in line with Costa than Hazard. Whilst Hazard and Fabregas led the way for successful passes (64 and 62), Pedro and Costa were neck-and-neck on 29 apiece. Hazard again bettered his Blues team-mates for successful passes in the final third (25) and served up five key passes for the visitors, which was joint-top for the Gameweek.

Pedro, meanwhile, managed 16 successful passes in the final third – just four less than Fabregas – and, despite failing with five of his six crosses, he still completed 84.2% of his passes in this area, second only to Hazard’s 86.2%. The new boy was bettered only by the Belgian for chances created (three to five), with Costa just behind on two.

In defence, Ivanovic again posted inferior numbers to Azpilicueta, with six successful passes in the final third to eight. The Spaniard also produced far more passes (52 to 31) and successful passes (37 to 26) than the Serbian. Worrying for Ivanovic’s owners, his stats were inferior to Gameweek 1-2, where he averaged 10.5 successful passes in the final third and 3.5 crosses – on Sunday, he produced one single, unsuccessful delivery from out wide.

Chelsea Goal Threat
ta
Costa leads the way this time, with four attempts on goal – all inside the box, which was joint-top for forwards in the Gameweek. Whilst Hazard matched the Spain international for touches in the box (six apiece), he registered just one wayward attempt at the Hawthorns. Although he upped his creativity at the weekend, the Belgian continues to struggle for goal threat and has managed just three attempts in as many appearances.

Pedro, again, was relatively similar to Costa. The new boy produced five touches in the box and a total of three attempts, with two arriving inside the area. Willian also managed a trio of efforts but failed to find the net – perhaps no surprise given that he scored just 3.6% of his chances in the previous campaign.

Conclusions
Obviously, it’s impossible to make any assumptions based on a single match but it’s fair to say that Pedro’s impact in the final third was immediately impressive.

Obviously, it’s nigh on impossible that he’ll average three shots and as many key passes every match but his contribution in the final third – relative to the rest of his team-mates – could well be more in line with Costa, as opposed to Hazard, judging by Sunday’s statistics. As highlighted above, the duo’s underlying numbers for involvement, distribution and goal threat were very similar, though Costa did have a clear edge for shots inside the box.

Whilst Pedro proves an enticing alternative to Hazard in FPL, particularly for those struggling for budget, we perhaps need a few more matches to ascertain whether he’ll prove a viable rival. Given that his impact saw Hazard turn in his most creative display of the season, and Costa produce his most threatening performance, there’s every chance that Pedro’s acquisition could ultimately boost the pair’s points hauls, rather than lessen their potential for Fantasy managers.

Ivanovic owners, meanwhile, will be hoping that the weekend was just a temporary blip and the Serbian can rediscover the raiding runs down the right that were such a feature of Chelsea’s title-winning campaign last term.

Good idea to double up, there's some good things going on at Melwood currently in how to counter press teams using a three man pivot. In other words teams just won't be able to get pass Liv's defence.

an injury to schnei would worry me, carrick and schwei will rotate, herrera scored but looked poor in my opinion. they also can play blind in there too. I'd personally rather see a winger so mata can play number 10 or a proper striker so rooney can play number 10

Is Sánchez worth 2.6m more than Ramsey if, fitness permitting, Agüero is likely to be perma-captain for the next 6 gameweeks?

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

In short no. He'll likely do better than Ramsey but not £2.6m better.

Thanks Balders, that's my thinking too.

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 5 months ago

Here's my back of the envelope calculations for it:

          2.6m = 50-55 points in a season = 8-9 points over 6 weeks = 1 goal + 3 BAPs or 2 assists + 2/3 BAPs over 6 points.

It's certainly doable for Sanchez but then also Ramsey could outscore Sanchez by that over 6 weeks. Its a close call and when it's a close call I'd prefer to spread the money across a couple of 8.5s rather than stake everything on Sanchez.

Thanks Balders. I have Yaya, Ayew and Mahrez so it's just a question of who fills the fourth slot. I can afford either this week, but Sanchez would leave me less in the bank to play around with next week.

Thanks Balders, but Mahrez and Ayew have form and underlying stats to back them up so they're both staying for now. I watched some of the Swansea game the other day and really liked the positions Ayew was taking up.

He's a forward masquerading as a midfielder I this game.

Plainly I think he will score more points, and I think he gives me a opportunity to vary my captaincy.

At home to Stoke GW5 he's a differential option to Aguero.

Say you save the £2.6m can you guarantee high points because of it? If you can great.

Not just Sanchez v Ramsey but Sanchez & X vs. Ramsey & Y.

And if you go Ramsey & Y you could be paying -4 to get Sanchez back in.

Thanks Tony. I currently have 4.8m in the bank so my fear actually is if I go Sanchez, I will have to spend -4 downgrading him to Ramsey if I want to quickly upgrade my second or third striker.

Agree. That is why I have Sanchez. While Ramsey takes shots, Sanchez is seemingly an oop forward and very aggressive when on the field. He is more apt to get the big haul, Imo.

He's definitely not be in his top gear in terms of his finishing, so no I wouldn't disagree.

But that'll come. He is in the box, he is shooting in the box, his quality is unquestionable. It'll come.

                  Penalty area touches
                  Sanchez 37

                  Sanchez 12
                  Rambo 4

Sanchez has played 90mins less game time with basically zero preseason.

When his match rhythm comes he bangs them in and it could start this weekend.

It is a problem I agree. I think Arsenal could do well against Newcastle so I'd like one of their options, but there's no guaranteed it'll be the right one.

I have no Arsenal coverage and it's worrying but at the same time I know other teams have either Sanchez, Ozil, Giroud, Ramsey and Carzola. So unless they score big I'm actually pretty safe.

The case against Kolarov seems to be that there is rotation risk with Clichy. But is there any concern that Kompany will get rotated with Otamendi and Mangala there? Will Pellegrini save his legs on occasion? I'm leaning toward Kompany because he seems less at risk, but is that true?

I would, if I didn't sell sakho for Wilson already ('twas a toss up between these two). Sakho is way too uncertain with his arrests and groin injury.

Could be anything. If Wilson was on your bench last week and you used bench boost... AOA could be a downgrade. IMO on average:

      Captain 12
      Bench Boost 14
      AOA 2

I agree with the 2 now. The others might be on if you can at least manage 1 CS out of 3 & use the (c) in a DGW.

If most use it in a DGW, I'd want 10 minimum. Just trying to work out a formula to work out real rankings in a way.

          I'd go Azpi.
You're well covered at the back & the money might come in handy to upgrade in 2/3 weeks time.
IF you took Coates out, look at your back 3 (or 4) for next 3/4 weeks - you'll be benching a good defender and that money is tied up.

I got Gomez last night. Forehead claims it is his role to lose at this point. If he does get rotated, we bench, and sell when there is a ft to be had (or on wc). I like the risk-reward scenario here. Potential points and money with three easy home fixtures in next four coming up. We're a tad late is all....

It makes me smile to see players that I might conceivably get it the future dropping in price now

Jagielka might be a decent option at 5.4 or even less by the time Everton has some decent fixtures

Yeah....makes the game more strategic. The greater price volatility this year adds a dimension. I wish it were even more....with more transfers to carry over, too (if one hoarded). Would add even more strategy differentiation.

That could be good for the more hardcore FPL players but if you look at it from the League's perspective they want as many players as possible and by making the game require more attention/effort it probably wouldn't facilitate that

Very valid point. It's a business, I have to remember that.

In other fantasy games I've played, the rules were pretty much all out geared to the hard core player....but they didn't have 3.5 million subscribers either!

What would you choose and why?

    A. Hazard & Yaya
    B. Pedro & Silva

Note that I dont have enough funds to do Silva and Hazard. Thanks!

      B. Silva is a must have right now, and Pedro looks to be playing more forward than Haz, imo.

Imo, B based off of Pedro and Silva are both on form. Yaya is too but Haz def isn't.

Monitor Pedro, go YYT if you need the extra $$$ but otherwise Silva

Im going for B on wildcard, then you have a little extra cash to upgrade defenders something else...

Thank you guys, do we think the arrival of KDB will impact Silva's output negatively?

Here's my dilemma in the Sky game, I have Coates and Gomis and I'm gonna swap them for Silva and Nyom. It's just the timing I'm struggling with. Would you rather

    A. Play Gomis and Coates this week with Gomis (c) on the Sunday
    Or
    B. Make the transfers and play Silva and Nyom, meaning Redmond will be captain on Sunday as he's my only player

All help is greatly appreciated thanks!
