After quickly concluding a deal to bring Pedro to Stamford Bridge last week, following reported interest from Manchester United throughout the summer, Jose Mourinho immediately handed the Spaniard a starting role for the champions’ trip to West Brom.

It took the new signing just 84 minutes to provide a snapshot of what we can expect in the Premier League. Priced at 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Pedro scored the opening goal in the Blues’ 3-2 victory at the Hawthorns, while he also provided the assist for Diego Costa’s strike and earned maximum bonus points on Sunday afternoon.

Having served up a 13-point debut haul, Pedro been subject to a major bandwagon over the last three days, with 240,000 new owners acquired in FPL. With that in mind, we assess the Spaniard’s weekend display as Fantasy managers scramble for his signature.

Chelsea Average Positions versus West Brom

ta

Handed a role on the right of Mourinho’s default 4-2-3-1 set-up, Pedro (number 17) afforded the Blues a little more width than Eden Hazard (number 10) on the opposite flank, whereas Willian (hidden by Radamel Falcao’s number 9) dropped a little deeper in possession in his role behind Diego Costa (number 19).

What’s also noticeable here is that Branislav Ivanovic (number 2) was very withdrawn when on the ball in the right-back berth. Indeed, Cesar Azpilicueta (number 28) was on a par with his fellow full-back when on the ball at the Hawthorns.

Chelsea Involvement
ta

Looking at the involvement stats, Pedro saw far less of the ball than the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Hazard, with 92 and 91 touches respectively – his 54 touches were exactly the same as lone striker Costa. Whereas Fabregas and Hazard produced a touch every 1.0 and 1.1 minutes apiece, Pedro managed a touch every 1.6 minutes – of Chelsea’s ten outfield starters, only Kurt Zouma (1.7) and Ivanovic (2.0) were worse off here.

When you analyse the final third numbers, though, it’s a different story. Pedro jumps up to second behind Hazard for touches (34 to 40), and was again more or less identical to Costa (33).

In terms of frequency of passes received, once again Hazard (every 1.4) and Fabregas (every 1.5) are the main men here. Given that they ranked first and second for key passes (100 and 93) in 2014/15, it’s little surprise that Chelsea are looking to get the duo on the ball as much as possible.

Pedro, on the other hand, is no playmaker. He won’t hog the ball. Instead, his pace, intelligence and movement off the ball into space will be a key facet of the champions’ attack, with compatriot Fabregas explaining that he gives the Blues something different:

“I knew straight away that he would make an impact. It is something that we don’t have in our team, this pacey player that goes behind defenders, that goes one against one. He goes behind defences and stretches them, while Willian and Eden (prefer) the ball to their feet. The mentality of this guy is fantastic. I’m very happy for him.”

What is also noticeable is Ivanovic’s lack of impact as an attacking outlet from the right-back berth. Granted, there could be a number of reasons for this. It may be a lack of confidence after his poor displays in the first two matches or perhaps an indication that his partnership with Pedro on the flank will need more work. Alternatively, Mourinho may have simply told him to rein in his forward forays for now.

Nonetheless, in the final third, the Serbian was overshadowed by Azpilicueta for touches (nine to 12) and passes received (four to ten). Given that he averaged 26.5 touches and 13.5 passes received in the final third over the first two Gameweeks, though, Sunday saw a significant drop-off.

Chelsea Distribution
ta

Looking at the distribution stats, Pedro’s numbers are once again more in line with Costa than Hazard. Whilst Hazard and Fabregas led the way for successful passes (64 and 62), Pedro and Costa were neck-and-neck on 29 apiece. Hazard again bettered his Blues team-mates for successful passes in the final third (25) and served up five key passes for the visitors, which was joint-top for the Gameweek.

Pedro, meanwhile, managed 16 successful passes in the final third – just four less than Fabregas – and, despite failing with five of his six crosses, he still completed 84.2% of his passes in this area, second only to Hazard’s 86.2%. The new boy was bettered only by the Belgian for chances created (three to five), with Costa just behind on two.

In defence, Ivanovic again posted inferior numbers to Azpilicueta, with six successful passes in the final third to eight. The Spaniard also produced far more passes (52 to 31) and successful passes (37 to 26) than the Serbian. Worrying for Ivanovic’s owners, his stats were inferior to Gameweek 1-2, where he averaged 10.5 successful passes in the final third and 3.5 crosses – on Sunday, he produced one single, unsuccessful delivery from out wide.

Chelsea Goal Threat
ta
Costa leads the way this time, with four attempts on goal – all inside the box, which was joint-top for forwards in the Gameweek. Whilst Hazard matched the Spain international for touches in the box (six apiece), he registered just one wayward attempt at the Hawthorns. Although he upped his creativity at the weekend, the Belgian continues to struggle for goal threat and has managed just three attempts in as many appearances.

Pedro, again, was relatively similar to Costa. The new boy produced five touches in the box and a total of three attempts, with two arriving inside the area. Willian also managed a trio of efforts but failed to find the net – perhaps no surprise given that he scored just 3.6% of his chances in the previous campaign.

Conclusions
Obviously, it’s impossible to make any assumptions based on a single match but it’s fair to say that Pedro’s impact in the final third was immediately impressive.

Obviously, it’s nigh on impossible that he’ll average three shots and as many key passes every match but his contribution in the final third – relative to the rest of his team-mates – could well be more in line with Costa, as opposed to Hazard, judging by Sunday’s statistics. As highlighted above, the duo’s underlying numbers for involvement, distribution and goal threat were very similar, though Costa did have a clear edge for shots inside the box.

Whilst Pedro proves an enticing alternative to Hazard in FPL, particularly for those struggling for budget, we perhaps need a few more matches to ascertain whether he’ll prove a viable rival. Given that his impact saw Hazard turn in his most creative display of the season, and Costa produce his most threatening performance, there’s every chance that Pedro’s acquisition could ultimately boost the pair’s points hauls, rather than lessen their potential for Fantasy managers.

Ivanovic owners, meanwhile, will be hoping that the weekend was just a temporary blip and the Serbian can rediscover the raiding runs down the right that were such a feature of Chelsea’s title-winning campaign last term.

Flexiblity won't matter if Mids are outscoring forwards by so much. Obviously, when the tide changes 2 FT's is all it takes. Why go with a 3-4-3 when there are so many limited options up front? (Compared to mids)

        Pedro/Shaqiri/Silva ----> 4.5 mid
        4.5 Forward ----> Big hitter

I don't get why people see this as a problem. Right now, mids are easily outscoring forwards.

                Most people have:

                Sanchez, Silva, 7.0, Mahrez, 4.5
                Aguero, Wilson, Gomis

They would have to downgrade Sanchez/Silva to upgrade Wilson/Gomis

I have Aguero, Costa and Wilson up front 🙂

I also have Pedro, Mahrez, Coutinho and Yaya in mid... Plus Kolarov, Gomez and Cedric in back... Lots of forward players at all levels. It also gives me the option to sell Costa, put in Benteke and increase spend in mid or def if I need it.

You should downgrade a mid player, have a strong 4 with a 5.5m priced backup so you can strengthen your attack.

I think this can work. Considered the same thing for my WC last week. Ultimately I decided I prefered Gomis to Shaqiri but at that point Shaqiri hadn't played for Stoke.

My other concern was that Westwood is a better bench player than the 4.5m forwards but after Shaqiri looked good on his debut I'd be more tempted now.

You could do MUCH better with a WC team but I won't tell you why or how as you will just disagree with it unless I lie and say it's a great team which seems to be the only feedback and opinion you will accept

You basically see any opinion different to your own wrong and rule it out. Why bother putting up a RMT in the first place if you aren't interested in taking the opinions on board. The only other reason would be to gloat, but your team isn't up to gloating standards.

I don't rule it out. I say why I did what I did. Obviously, everyone has some good points. Wouldn't it be better to argue someone else opinion then just posting "thanks" I thought that's what this site was about. This is more of a post of 3-5-2 Vs 3-4-3.

I like it. I've gone for a similar approach but I don't mind playing a 3-4-3 with my team according to fixtures, especially Wilson's.

              My team is:

              Kolorov - Gomez - Azpilicueta - Shaw - Targett

              Hazard - Sanchez - Depay - Mahrez - Westwood

              Aguero - Diouf - Wilson

I think many people don't like the adaptability that your forward cover might not even play too much. So a late injury could cause a reduction of points but I think like my team there is enough cover and as you said solutions are only a -4 hit away. Until the big boys up front start finding their feet, I'm happy to let my defense and Midfield bring home the bacon, although at the moment it only seems to be defenders and Mahrez pulling their weight but hopefully I'm ready for some decent fixtures.

Looks good in theory. Imo, you have Kun only in attack with 2 cheap strikers, 1 of which will likely never play, let alone score points. However I am an advocate of having the cheapest possible bench and all available funds spent on the first team. I see people debating that you can't swap things around easily but nor can anyone else because budgets are tight at this point of the follow season. To upgrade gomis to costa for example will mean someone would need to find at least £3..7m from somewhere to fund it so this gomis is easier to upgrade boll0cks is tosh. Upgrading to any top players, regardless of position, is going to stretch everyone's budget and probably involve a hit or three in the process. Your idea is sound in your mind so you must go with it. My gripe is people post their team asking for opinions on it and then get upset by comments differing from their own. If you don't want to hear it, don't ask for it. And that is not directed personally at you puyol, just a general statement because I've seen a few do it. Go with you plan. You can easily swap it for 3-4-3 if you want to if it doesn't work out. Good luck. 😉

I get what you mean about people getting "upset" from comments, but thats the beauty of this site. Everyone has their own opinion, if we all agreed with each other, this forum would be dull. I don't mind people thinking their team is "perfect" (ie; me) but reading their opinions and arguing it always makes you reconsider things, which is a good thing.

I'm open to changes... But the main argument here is Wilson as a 2nd striker, pretty much every comment is about him, and obviously I don't want too change that. I would be open to comments like Shaqiri to Ayew (someone did suggest that, taken it on board) or a defensive change (Nyom to another 4.5)

I don't have much intention on changing my front 3, which is what this argument has been about.

I have the almost similar team as you, and I WC in GW2. Decided to go with a MF of Hazard - Silva - Alexis - Ayew - Mahrez and I don't see myself getting another striker when my MF players are performing well.

You should stick with your front 3 🙂 (though I was dumb enough to get Watmore over Graham, not too sure who was a sure starter than)

And I've been a Wilson owner and kept him in the WC for a reason. He can be a 2nd striker no doubt about that, some people are just thinking we are knee jerking when they are actually doing so.

The point you helped me prove was your stubbornness with Falcao, similar to my stubbornness with Aguero, Wilson, 4.5
You got constantly criticised for having Falcao, and never took anyone's opnion to sell him because he wasn't nailed or what not. I'm getting criticised that Wilson as a 2nd striker makes things tough for me. And by disagreeing with it there is a riot.

    Myhill Guzan
    Kolarov Azpi Francis Martin STaylor
    Silva Sanchez Pedro Mahrez Westwood
    Aguero Gomis Wilson

Thinking of Azpi to Bellerin and upgrading STaylor.

    thoughts?

Still debating a -4 for Sakho (currently on my bench) to Wilson

I am usually fine to go for a -4 with a long term view, but on the other hand west ham have a nice fix in gw5

Need 2 defenders for around 10m, already have Kolorov/Gomez/4.5. Opinions welcome:

    A, Williams/Dawson
    B, Bellerin/Francis
    C, Azp/4.5
    D, Something else

Fair enough but arsenal haven't been looking good either. Cech bailed them out hard last match and if they still have injury woes with their main CBs, can see their back line being shakey

Agreed, this is why Williams/Dawson is in there. 2 teams who can keep clean sheets but they also have negatives. Swans fixtures and West Broms form. Not even sure if Dawson is nailed on

Benteke will be the favourite with the shambolic defence West Ham has been displaying. That being said, I can see them playing a lot more tighter in the back especially if Sakho doesn't play and with Zarate still out.

Depends how the rest of your team stacks up and how many FT you have. I'm being fairly stubborn and holding onto Kane but more so to have 2FT for next week. I'd wait and see how he stacks up against Norwich and then dump next week if he gets nothing.

Would be grateful for any comments on my team and proposed transfers!

    Butland (McCarthy)
    Kompany-Darmian-Richards (Naughton, Huth)
    Silva-Sanchez-Hoola-Mahrez (Payet)
    Aguero-Gomis-Diouf

    0.1 ITB

I'm thinking of doing Kompany + Payet --> Kolarov + Coutinho

I need to do Kompany --> Kolarov to fund Payet --> Coutinho. Kolarov is nailed on for the foreseeable future and Coutinho has been very impressive. Pool in general has shown promising signs so going forward I think either of Coutinho or Tekkers is important to have.
