The Numbers Game – Dempsey Vs Dembele

Last weekend saw a brace from Clint Dempsey grab the headlines in Fulham’s 2-0 win over Wigan as Mark Hughes’ side recovered from two straight league defeats to climb back into the top half of the table.

With a broken leg keeping Bobby Zamora sidelined for the next few months, Dempsey has been playing as an out-of-position forward for the Cottagers and the American has taken his chance to impress. In the six games Fulham have played since Zamora‘s Karl Henry-enforced injury, Dempsey has scored four goals and, taking Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points into the equation, has racked up a total of 41 points during this period, compared with just 6 points in the first four league games of the season. Averaging almost seven points per game up front, then, Dempsey is making a mockery of the fact his price has dropped £0.3m (from £7m to £6.7m) since the season began.

My buddies are gone to Oslo for the weekend, so here was I rubbing my hands together thinking "they are screwed, they will forget to make transfers and I am sure they have VDV/Nani etc", so one of them does, and one of them (who I must stress goes weeks forgetting to make changes, which makes his team this week all the more frustrating:

I hate things like this. Why is it always footballers who are compared. Just because they are "only playing football" doesnt mean they should be scrutinised anymore than an actor that earns £20mil per film.

At the end of the day they are providing an entertainment that for the most part not very many people can do. It's not like they don't generate a ton of money for the clubs paying them as well.

I don't disagree that soldiers, nurses, firefighters should get paid more. But I don't see why it always has to be compared to a footballer.

  i love this statement. if rooney just sipped pink champagne all his life he wouldn't be earning whatever wage he's on (i love how these people think they know how much he's earning). he's trained every day of his life to become one of the best footballers in the world and simply taken the offers this ability has got him. rooney generates thousands a week in taxes for this country. soldiers (ok not them but the war) waste millions a week in tax money.

  Figueroa was supposed to be this season's Konchesky as there was a lot of speculation that he would be going to 'Pool over the summer and that he would be the cheap route to 1's and 2's from the Liverpool backline.

        'this season's Distin' would actually make sense, because Distin was the cheap defender (initially from Portsmouth) who moved to a bigger club, becoming a good* cheap option.
        
        *although he actually turned out to be a massive ballache.

  If you have Chelsea players, you have to play them all. Unless it's Alex away at Utd, and you have three other defenders with good fixtures. That's the only scenario where benching a Chelsea player is allowed.

    As the podcast suggests, having three Chelsea players can be a bit of a straight jacket as you pretty much have to play them, regardless of the opposition.
    
    It's why Malouda has been turning in so many 2s, to people's irritation, while they've had other players with more points on their bench.

      Yeah it's a very good point. When fixtures are consistently excellent - like the first 5 games of the season - then it isn't a problem at all, but when they aren't, having around 30 million tied up in three players that you have to play every week limits the rest of the side considerably.

        ...and I'll have both of them for the next three (blp BOL ARS) after which I'll transfer Nani back in. So it basically delays having make a potentially difficult decision - hopefully after three weeks the decision will be obvious either way - whilst hopefully raking in the points from a run of nice fixtures.

        I was considering getting rid of Nani but i have no clue who to get to replace him. Was considering Walcott but he seems a bit risky. Don't fancy doubling up on Arteta & Cahill (already have Arteta) so that leaves very few attractive options. Scholes is another i suppose.
