Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 6

Alexander Tettey became the first player to topple off the Suspension Tightrope this season, picking up his fifth yellow for a foul on Philippe Coutinho during Norwich’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. The Norwegian enforcer – who has amassed a card every 105 minutes this term – now misses the Canaries’ Capital One Cup Third Round match against West Brom on Wednesday, before returning next Gameweek for a trip to West Ham.

Prior to today’s match, Tettey tried to explain the series of combative displays which has now seen him collect a booking in five of the first six Gameweeks:

“If you look at the yellow cards, there is a reason. I don’t go out looking to pick up yellow cards. I have a role in the team and the manager has made it clear what he wants from me in that position. If it was up to me I would be having zero yellow cards. He has been helping me a lot since he came in, in terms of what I should do and always looking at how I play and giving me some advice. He played in my position so he knows exactly what I have to do.”

Elsewhere on the Gameweek 6 Tightrope, the likes of Joe Gomez, Fernandinho, Sebastien Bassong, Erik Dier, Ciaran Clark, Matteo Darmian and Eliaquim Mangala remain on three yellows, having escaped the referee’s wrath in this round of fixtures.

There are six new additions at the three-yellow mark, though, with Jeffrey Schlupp, James Milner, Jack Colback, Andre Ayew, Sebastian Coates and Billy Jones bolstering the ranks after this weekend’s matches.

Turning our attention to the newly-suspended players, Arsenal duo Gabriel and Santi Cazorla were both dismissed during their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday. The former received a straight red for kicking Diego Costa, meaning he’ll sit out the Gunners’ midweek League Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur and two league ties (lei, MUN), before making a potential return in Gameweek 9 for a trip to Watford. Cazorla, meanwhile, was sent off for two bookable offences and is set to miss the midweek cup derby with Spurs. This means he will be back in contention for Saturday’s road encounter at Leicester.

Kevin Mirallas was brought on in the dying embers of Everton’s 0-0 draw against Swansea but still found time to earn a straight red for a studs-up challenge on Swans player Modou Barrow. Nonetheless, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is weighing up the possibility of launching an appeal to the FA:

“I always tell my subs to come on with real intensity so I was pleased with Kevin’s manner. I felt he was more like a striker trying to defend himself and maybe putting in a defensive challenge which looked worse than it actually was. I haven’t seen it in detail but sometimes you need to show a little more common sense and I felt that he clearly didn’t have the intention to hurt the Swansea player. It was more Kevin being fired up trying to get the tempo of the game and trying to help the team. I’m disappointed with the action but not with his manner. I haven’t seen it again but we’ll look at it and if there are grounds for an appeal we’ll look at it.”

Although he received just a yellow during the Blues’ meeting with Arsenal, Diego Costa may yet face retrospective action if referee Mike Dean confirms he failed to see any potential incidents involving the Chelsea striker and Laurent Koscielny on Saturday lunchtime. The FA are studying the whistler’s match report and are expected to announce their verdict tomorrow.

Arsene Wenger is certainly adamant that the Spain international should be punished with what would amount to a three-match ban:

“I don’t want to judge Mike Dean overall but in this game it was surprising that Costa got away with what he did. You go into half-time with a red card and he stays on the pitch.”

Moving onto the players that are currently serving out bans, Valon Behrami still has two league fixtures (CRY, bou) left on his three-match suspension, while Charlie Adam and Aleksandar Mitrovic serve the last of three-match bans in the Capital One Cup.

Adam will skip Stoke’s road tie against Fulham in midweek, meaning he will be available for the Gameweek 7 home clash against Bournemouth. Similarly, Mitrovic will be available for Newcastle’s home clash against Chelsea in Gameweek 7 as we will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s visit on Wednesday.

Potters boss Mark Hughes can also call upon Ibrahim Afellay’s services for their home match-up against Bournemouth next weekend, given that the Dutch winger sat out the second match of his two-game ban this Gameweek. Watford defender Miguel Britos is back in contention for the home clash against Palace after serving out a suspension for violent conduct.

      Sounds a bit melodramatic but lost a little bit of love for football watching Costa on Saturday.

      Loved him last year a combination of aggression and good play. This was just theatrics, play acting, goading, moaning and nothing about football. Gabriel was silly to get wound up, totally agree but spending my valuable time watching games/a player like that is depressing.

        Great summary - it is very bad to watch and makes you angry, upset and detracts from the game!

        I lost a lot of respect for an otherwise fantastic player. Really hoping Chelsea drop right off this year, just don't like their baby-like nature when it comes to this stuff.

        Rugby Union has the most respectful environment on the field, it's something i think football could try and emmulate. Only the captain can speak to the ref, there's a sin-bin for foul language, no-one talks back, there are hand shakes mid-game, etc.

            I still remember when Ibrahimovic and Ramires went down in a 50-50 tackle and Zlatan got a red card ... it was an incredible scene. The 11 babies in blue standing around berating the referee was disgusting. No saying it's better elsewhere, but Chelsea are the WORST at fair play!

      maccabi aren't the greatest team and arsenal were down a man for the whole 2nd half, but this is probably a turning point for them...6-0 in the last two games will certainly breed confidence, which is important for any team, and chelsea have too many top players not to come good, and their fixtures are clearing up too now

    Although Willian works more 'hard' , Oscar is more efficient both offensively and defensively.....his PPG are higher than Willian(a lot higher)....and to prove his defensive credentials.......Cazorla had 0 shots and 0 attempted assists against Chelsea (Oscar was marking Caz)

    Kun's stats is badly going downhill, it may be him that makes way for Pelle.

    Wait for a DGW - play WC week before - keep non DGW heavy hitters - fill team with DGW players, including cheap bench options - play bench boost in DGW?

    The heavy hitters are still not producing the goods. Is 3-5-2 the way forward?

    What about 4 defenders - my best gameweek was when I played 4 defenders? Defenders seem to be racking up bps too.

    What strategy do you have in mind to improve your ranking?

      Have a strong bench and mix up the formations according to fixtures. I've been doing a mix of 433, 442, and 343. I also managed to get Sakho's 7pts off the bench as my 2nd sub. Its all about having a strong squad for those unexpected benchings/injuries.

                    Exactly. The WC is all about growing into form during the tournament.

          No sure to be honest. Those of us that know a bit about rugby never gave the Boks a chance(in the tournament) once the team was announced. Still, losing against Japan was never part of the script.

          There are a lot of politics involved behind the scenes. It's never good for sport, that's why I've given up watching a long time ago.

              is it really that simple? 80% of the populatin are black , so why is it then thaat there are so few in the current squad 9/31? Either black people are suffering from not having the same training facilities as white people in order to develop as well as sportsmen and/or there is a racist selection struction going on within the school systemts and at a national level which wouldnt surprise me at all given how rubgy is traditionally seen as a 'white' sport.

                But what's the point of playing in a WC - the pinnacle of the sport - with a weakened squad?

                Give it time - there will be more and more black players coming through. Look at how many Maori players the ABs can now muster from say 30 years ago?

                How many black players play professional rugby compared to white players though? 9/31 seems decent considering the pool of players they can select from?

                I agree that there should be serious consideration going into increasing the amount of good black rugby players at grass roots level though. Then there should be greater representation at the professional level and then the quota can be raised?

              It's just not black/white politics, it's also the politics involving "I'm picking only Bulls" and players that I've worked at provincial level as coach eg Matfield, F du Preez and Kitchner. While not picking inform players like Damian de Allende. No team has ever or will ever win a WC with a 38 yr old lock.

              Disgusting.

    This was a reply to Diva's blog post. Thought it'd be worth a repost here.

    I have sold Sakho to bring Martial in. The reason I sold Sakho was because in my opinion he’s not in form, he was lucky to score a scrappy goal at the weekend. I’m not willing to hold onto him despite having strong fixtures because to me he doesn’t look threatening enough.

    There are a few reasons why I got Martial. Firstly he is only 8m and plays up front for United, he’ll get a good run of games as he’s the only real out and out striker in the squad. From the few opportunities he’s had he’s taken them very smoothly and oozes confidence when in front of goal. As a striker for United I would expect him to have more opportunities to shoot in future as his team mates get used to him.

    The other reason I bought him in is the immediate bandwagon this will become and the subsequent price rises. The huge United fanbase will cause a snowball effect as they clammer to bring him in for the Sunderland fixture. He will rise 0.3. If he does well against Sunderland as expected then he’ll rise another 0.3. This one could quite quickly get away on you. Of course those of us that hold out this week will see his hard fixtures after Sunderland and will continue to resist, forgetting that he is playing up front for United, a fixture proof team. If you avoid him now, it will more than likely be a long term decision. Possibly a costly one.

      There is a link to my blog in my profile if you want to read what Ryan was responding to. Here is the start of my response to Ryan: "You make some valid points in your counter argument Ryan. He could snowball, particularly in a season where good striking options have been hard to come by so far. But that doesn’t change the fact that his underlying data does not support his current rate of return long term. Nevertheless, if he does do well and the factors you list in his favour do work for him, then he could still be good value at 9.0m."

      Agreed.. Bought him in last night to catch up with people's TV and cause most of the players in my Cash ML are Manutd fans and they WILL own him soon enough. People talk about form over fixture on here only wen it suits them

      Your 2nd last sentence is correct, it is a long term decision. If I don't get him this week, which I doubt I will because it would be for a hit and I've already missed the first rise, I definitely won't get him when their fixtures get harder. But... if he scores well against Sunderland the majority of owners will stick with him throughout the tough fixture run. If he blanks in those (which I expect him to) I'll be very happy that I didn't tie myself to a striker with bad fixtures and rotation risk just for TV.

        I'm not so sure people will blindly hold onto him if he fails in the tough fixtures, people are aware of the risk and he could become an easy sell to others in that price range are performing. Still, I expect him to continue doing well despite the fixtures, imo United are a fixture proof team.

          United's fixtures look great from GW12. If I had Martial now I wouldn't want to sell before then.

          Disagree about United being fixture proof. How can we really know that when they haven't played a top team yet? Don't act like Liverpool at home is a hard fixture these days. Their biggest test was at Swansea and they failed.

            Last season has proven it imo. City are the top team and United beat them comfortably last season, Chelsea are on shaky ground and Arsenal are beatable. All there needs to be is goals anyway as far as Martial is concerned.

    Targett missed his first minutes of the season so far yesterday. If Anyone is at all in the know, is that a sign of the future or can we still expect him to start almost every week?

      He got a minor head injury just before half time.. Soton confirmed it's the reason he dint come back out. I'd be more worried about Bertrand playing tnite for the Reserves though.. means Targett gonna be benched soon anyway

      Pretty similar to my crew. I am thinking Ayew > Payet as below.

    I se everyone is buying Martial. It is a pretty tough fixture list the week after Sunderland though isn't it?

          I'm sorry to hear that Cheese, but if you will spend time quaffing all the "vintage champagne", what do you expect? 🙂

            It's OK. BabyB will have a lot of cleaning to do and then I can go back to a nice tidy penthouse next week.

            This Martial thing has given me something to think about. I kind of had a plan about this week but I am going to have to think about this. The price rises are tempting and it is Sunderland.....

              He could do well next week, or he could blank. I heard BabyB muttering something about "hazmat". Do you know what he means?

                You wouldn't believe it. I was planning a defensive transfer. Ditching Lescott will save me 0.1 anyway. I know I missed a price rise on Cresswell but I may just do it anyway.

      "Takes La Roja's hand and leads towards light"

      A for sure. Best captain option and profit.

        Already got Mata and Darmian. Feels wrong to triple up on Manu, fixtures aren't pretty either

      Get Hazard.

      Martial would mean you have triple United during hard fixtures. I wouldn't even want triple United for a good run of fixtures. If you want Martial you have to accept that Mata is a transfer out waiting to happen.

    Howard - Ruddy
    Kolarov - Sagna - Clyne - Gomez - Ward
    Depay - Hazard - Sterling - Redmond - Mahrez
    Wilson - Costa - Lukaku

    2FT

    A. Lukaku & Sterling -> Payet & Pelle (1.4 itb)
    B. Lukaku & Sterling -> Pedro & Gomis
    C. Lukaku & Sterling -> Coutinho & Pelle (1.0 itb)
    D. Lukaku & STerling -> Coutinho & Son (0.9 itb)
