Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 6

Alexander Tettey became the first player to topple off the Suspension Tightrope this season, picking up his fifth yellow for a foul on Philippe Coutinho during Norwich’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. The Norwegian enforcer – who has amassed a card every 105 minutes this term – now misses the Canaries’ Capital One Cup Third Round match against West Brom on Wednesday, before returning next Gameweek for a trip to West Ham.

Prior to today’s match, Tettey tried to explain the series of combative displays which has now seen him collect a booking in five of the first six Gameweeks:

“If you look at the yellow cards, there is a reason. I don’t go out looking to pick up yellow cards. I have a role in the team and the manager has made it clear what he wants from me in that position. If it was up to me I would be having zero yellow cards. He has been helping me a lot since he came in, in terms of what I should do and always looking at how I play and giving me some advice. He played in my position so he knows exactly what I have to do.”

Elsewhere on the Gameweek 6 Tightrope, the likes of Joe Gomez, Fernandinho, Sebastien Bassong, Erik Dier, Ciaran Clark, Matteo Darmian and Eliaquim Mangala remain on three yellows, having escaped the referee’s wrath in this round of fixtures.

There are six new additions at the three-yellow mark, though, with Jeffrey Schlupp, James Milner, Jack Colback, Andre Ayew, Sebastian Coates and Billy Jones bolstering the ranks after this weekend’s matches.

Turning our attention to the newly-suspended players, Arsenal duo Gabriel and Santi Cazorla were both dismissed during their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday. The former received a straight red for kicking Diego Costa, meaning he’ll sit out the Gunners’ midweek League Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur and two league ties (lei, MUN), before making a potential return in Gameweek 9 for a trip to Watford. Cazorla, meanwhile, was sent off for two bookable offences and is set to miss the midweek cup derby with Spurs. This means he will be back in contention for Saturday’s road encounter at Leicester.

Kevin Mirallas was brought on in the dying embers of Everton’s 0-0 draw against Swansea but still found time to earn a straight red for a studs-up challenge on Swans player Modou Barrow. Nonetheless, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is weighing up the possibility of launching an appeal to the FA:

“I always tell my subs to come on with real intensity so I was pleased with Kevin’s manner. I felt he was more like a striker trying to defend himself and maybe putting in a defensive challenge which looked worse than it actually was. I haven’t seen it in detail but sometimes you need to show a little more common sense and I felt that he clearly didn’t have the intention to hurt the Swansea player. It was more Kevin being fired up trying to get the tempo of the game and trying to help the team. I’m disappointed with the action but not with his manner. I haven’t seen it again but we’ll look at it and if there are grounds for an appeal we’ll look at it.”

Although he received just a yellow during the Blues’ meeting with Arsenal, Diego Costa may yet face retrospective action if referee Mike Dean confirms he failed to see any potential incidents involving the Chelsea striker and Laurent Koscielny on Saturday lunchtime. The FA are studying the whistler’s match report and are expected to announce their verdict tomorrow.

Arsene Wenger is certainly adamant that the Spain international should be punished with what would amount to a three-match ban:

“I don’t want to judge Mike Dean overall but in this game it was surprising that Costa got away with what he did. You go into half-time with a red card and he stays on the pitch.”

Moving onto the players that are currently serving out bans, Valon Behrami still has two league fixtures (CRY, bou) left on his three-match suspension, while Charlie Adam and Aleksandar Mitrovic serve the last of three-match bans in the Capital One Cup.

Adam will skip Stoke’s road tie against Fulham in midweek, meaning he will be available for the Gameweek 7 home clash against Bournemouth. Similarly, Mitrovic will be available for Newcastle’s home clash against Chelsea in Gameweek 7 as we will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s visit on Wednesday.

Potters boss Mark Hughes can also call upon Ibrahim Afellay’s services for their home match-up against Bournemouth next weekend, given that the Dutch winger sat out the second match of his two-game ban this Gameweek. Watford defender Miguel Britos is back in contention for the home clash against Palace after serving out a suspension for violent conduct.

Only one side in the premier league has failed to score more than once in a league game

    Can you name them?

Fair enough. I assumed your question was about this year hence Liverpool guess - don't think they've scored many.

But just in case I went with another poor team 🙂

      Howdy DZ,
Finally climbing the ranks after some tough weeks 🙂

      Butland (Ruddy)
      Kolarov, Darmian, Lovren, (Huth), (Richards)
      Mahrez, Payet, KDB, Alexis, (Wanyama)
      Kun, Gomis, Wilson

Thinking either Lovren > Dawson, Alexis > Haz, Ruddy > Begovic in the next couple weeks/ this week.
      Good trades? Ideas?

I really can't decide. United's new number 9, looks composed in front of goal and is playing off the shoulder of defenders rather than dropping deep all the time (like Rooney does at number 9).

I do wonder how often he can keep starting at only 19 but he seems fit and physically ready for the league (something LvG has stated too).

This goal record isn't sustainable but Sunderland looks like a great fixture. The 3 after that? Not convinced and it's putting me off.

    Hazzy Mane Payet Mahrez Redmond

First four are staying and I'm pleased instuck with Payet and Hazzy, However Redmond is my concern as my fifth option, always look to play 3-4-3 if poss.

Free transfer, who is the best alternative to Redmond. (Kun, Gomis, Wilson up front)

AFAIK Mou picked him for the purpose of defending against quick strikers, it was first evident to me during the City game where he subbed him on to defend against Aguero.

Works the same way against Arsenal where their midfielders, wingers, attacking midfielders are fairly quick.

There's other quality centrebacks in Chelsea so IMO he won't get nailed game time.

I am hoping that due to the unusual nature of this season that a lot of people near the top of the OR's lack experience and the rest of us can take advantage as the season goes on. This should hopefully lead to much more opportunities for larger green arrows than previous seasons where everything becomes so tight nearer the top.

There's one key thing to note from Martial's second goal for me. It was of course a gift from Yoshida but it was Martial's position.

If Rooney was playing as number 9 I don't think we score there as he too often comes deep. Martial plays right off the shoulder of the CB and was easily able to latch onto the pass. He was even running back before the pass was made - good instinct.

to people considering Chelsea assets this week, Chelsea at St. James' Park last 3 seasons -

    Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea (2014/15)
    Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea (2013/14)
    Newcastle 3-2 Chelsea (2012/13)

it's the fixture that Newcastle turn up for regardless of what's going on.

Leicester vs West Ham - Tues
Sunderland vs Man City - Tues
    Spurs vs Arsenal - Wed
Norwich vs West Brom - Wed

All in the League cup this week. All other PL teams play also.

Okay so normally PL teams play 2nd string players for these games. I'd hate to see Sunderland's second team....

sunderland may play full team, makes them even easier for Martial to score 9 goals

    Butland - (McCarthy)
Kolorav - Dawson - Francis (Richards - Ward)
    Ayew - Sanchez - Yaya - Mahrez - Pedro
    Augero - Gomis - Wilson

    I'm thinking:

    Pedro ---> Hazard
    Ayew ---> Westwood
    Gomis ---> Martial

    All for a -8.....

I know it probably seems like a Knee Jerk, but I think Hazard will become essential again and i really don't want to miss out on Martial before he rises (again)

Unfortunately this seems like the only way to get both Hazard and Martial in.

Despite Sanchez blanking again I'm going to keep for a bit longer.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers

    Question:

When you play FT does it reset FTs? I.e. If you had 1 FT and subsequently played your WC, would you have 0,1 or 2 FTs the following week?

    Hello scouts!

1FT already spent on Costa > Martial

which tranny would you now prioritise ?

    A) Ayew > Payet (free)
    B) Gomez > Evans (free)
    C) both for a hit
    D) Pedro > Hazard
    E) Pedro/Ayew > Hazard/Payet for a hit

    Myhill
    Gomez Kolorov Darmian Francis Nyom
    Pedro Silva Mahrez Ayew Westwood
    Aguero Martial Wilson

If you do ban him you need to ban Kos as well, for his simulated dead man shot in the head act, when costa only pushed him away.

hum. True but that would be a 4th (I mainly play 3-4-3) and Dawson has failed to wrap a single bonus point so far. And Evans is 0,2 cheaper..

True, but I think Dawson has more potential to get attacking points than Evans...

Definitely. Get Evans over Dawson. He's a much better option I think and 0.2 cheaper. Deal with injury if it happens.
