This afternoon we publish our usual pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders according to the votes cast in our Captain Poll. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero (53%) reclaims the top spot in our Captain Poll ahead of Manchester City’s home tie against Newcastle United. Although the 13.2-priced forward has recorded five successive league blanks, his owners will be hoping he can kick on after scoring a midweek Champions League winner against Wolfsburg.

The favourable nature of the Sky Blues’ match-up finds Kevin De Bruyne – who’s netted in three of his four starts since arriving from Wolfsburg – sitting in silver-medal position with 10% of the votes. Fit-again David Silva (2%) also makes an appearance, given that the Magpies have conceded twice in five of the first seven Gameweeks.

Dimitri Payet lies in third place for the second successive Gameweek, with 7% of voters liking the Frenchman’s chances away to Sunderland, bearing in mind that the Wearsiders have conceded more goals (16) than any team so far. Payet has delivered attacking returns in all but two of his starts this campaign, underlining the consistency of his output. Diafra Sakho is backed by only 1% of the voters despite notching in three of the four Gameweeks, including strikes on the road against Liverpool and City.

Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy are both backed by 4% of voters as Leicester prepare to lock horns with Norwich at Carrow Road. The former has served up five double-figure hauls already, while the latter netted five goals in his previous four outings. The Canaries have yet to register a single clean sheet in the first seven Gameweeks.

Despite bagging a hat-trick last time out against Leicester, Alexis Sanchez scooped just 3% of the votes as Arsenal entertain a United side that’s conceded just five goals this term.

Notching a brace against Aston Villa in just his second league start since vacating the treatment room, Daniel Sturridge has encouraged 1% of to hand him the armband for the Merseyside derby, given that hosts Everton have yet to record a home clean sheet.

Anthony Martial (1%) – who sat atop the summit last Gameweek – plummets down the rankings by virtue of the Red Devils’ much more challenging match-up. The Gunners have conceded just two goals in their home clashes this term, yet the former Monaco frontman looks in fine fettle and has produced points in all three of his appearances so far.

Is there a better feeling than you looking at your team and thinking "yep, that looks alright"? Not in an arrogant sense, I've no doubt I'll have ballsed something up in hindsight, but being pretty much happy across the board.

Yes - going into a game knowing you've got points on the bench and willing a manager not to bring yer man on for the last 3 mins is up there with an international penalty shootout for stress

Better you think your team looks the worse it performs. There must be some kind of equation for it. The best thing is to choose an average team so your score is at worse mediocre.

The eye-catchiness of your lineup is inversely proportional to how many points you score.

Pretty much yes. You will get no points from your premium defenders and only a clean sheet from a Watford makeweight defender or something.

I believe Yaya is lacking fitness, I'd be tempted to transfer him out for Payet and play 3-4-3. Can't go without him. Good team though.

Aye, I was thinking of doing Yaya > Payet but I was persuaded not to on the first page of this post. Defenders don't have terrible fixtures and I'm not sure I want to take a hit this week...

You need to look at Gomis's avg position last week and consider that alongside the avg position that Monk had Bony playing in last season.
He goes for some sort of daft Failse 9 gameplan with the mids way ahead of the striker (as with Bony last season).
I've no idea if he will try that stunt again this week but I'd be nervous of it.

On the plus side it puts Siggy right back up there if he starts that lark again.

Yep, if I ditch it would be for a hit - and that's a hit I'd prefer to take after the international break.

Probably too much of a risk to play AOA if you're even this unsure over his game time. It's not much of a chip but there's no point in wasting it either.

Gomis came off at half time because he was playing badly I believe. I think Monk is hinting at the same happening again if Gomis plays below par. Just a warning sign to Gomis to play better so its all in his hands.

Looks like he'll be benched if not this, then soon..if he continues to underperform.

Ayew as a captain differential if Gomis is benched this week! 😀

Which one would you prefer to do for this week?

    A) Wilson to Ighalo/Deeney/Bojan? (which one?)
    B) Yaya to any mid up to 8.7m (which one?)

Next drop for Wilson won't affect his selling value but Yaya's next drop will decrease selling value.

not sure they're investing in a bus but Murray is very different kind of striker to Wilson so Bournemouth will have to adapt how they play to suit him

It actually pleases me as Francis owner as he puts in loads of crosses and Murray is a beast in the air

I've got a lineup I'm not so confident with this week, not sure how to change it though:

    De Gea
    Richards, Smalling, Kolarov
    Sanchez, Mahrez, Payet, Silva, Pedro
    Vardy, Martial

    Bench: Gomis, Gomez, Targett, Mcarthy.

I'm thinking of selling Gomis and bringing in someone else, then maybe taking out Sanchez (I'm a united fan, so despite feeling like he might score, I'd rather not be wanting him to score)

    0.9 itb.

I tend to agree, another question is how long do you plan to keep the players, in some cases making a rehaul could help for more than one gameweek

It depends on the transfers. Will they improve your team a lot and is there a good chance they'll pay off. Look at each hit individually. There's no difference between a -4 and a -12 in that respect.

thanks, I guess it comes down to whether it's worth a risk.

as an example I feel Gomis might not play a significant part in their game and Lukaku might score well again , or that replacing Yaya with someone like Payet could be worth a shot.
But doing both transfers probably makes sense only if I play AoA as otherwise I just bench Yaya and work with what I have.

But that depends on how your defence lines up for the wee. If the third defender is poor it might justify this. If they are decent probably not.

It depends on whether you're looking for a short or long term replacement, short term WBA could have some issue , but I expect them to keep enough clean sheets to warrant a player
