The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 9 – The Midfielders

After assessing the risers and fallers among the Defence on Saturday, our attention this afternoon turns to the midfield. There is no shortage of in-form options to choose from, with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez moving to the top of our ladder this week, though Kevin de Bruyne and Sadio Mane are hot on his heels following their double-digit scores in Gameweek 8.

Having cast aside his scoring drought, Alexis Sanchez highlighted his explosive potential over the last two Gameweeks, scoring five goals and bagging 36 goals in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). The former Barcelona attacker, available at 11.2 in FPL, lies second among midfielders for shots in the box over the last four Gameweeks with 16, but does face a fairly tricky run of fixtures (wat, EVE, swa, TOT, wba, nor) over the coming period.

One player who is close to matching Sanchez’ output is Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne. The 10.3-priced Belgian has scored three goals and provided two assists in his last three outings, and faces four home fixtures (BOU, NOR, LIV, SOT) over the next six Gameweeks, along with trips to Man United and Aston Villa. De Bruyne has only registered four shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, however, although he has also created a more impressive 13 chances over the same period. With doubts surrounding Yaya Toure and David Silva in the City midfield, the Belgian looks vital to his side’s prospects of remaining at the summit.

While Southampton’s Sadio Mane comes in a lot cheaper than Sanchez and De Bruyne, at just 7.9 in FPL, the Senegal international is certainly capable of delivering double-figure scores, as he has done twice over the last five Gameweeks. The Saints attacker has found the back of the net in his last two appearances, and has four favourable match-ups (LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO, mci) over the next month or so in which to continue his fantastic form.

West Ham’s Dimitri Payet remains towards the top of our ladder after registering attacking returns for the fourth match running, scoring in the Hammers 2-2 draw at Sunderland in Gameweek 8. The France international’s price has risen to 8.1 in FPL on the back of his outstanding form, but the former Marseille man does have a slightly more testing schedule (cpl, CHE, wat, EVE, tot, WBA) over the coming period.

After being surprisingly dropped to the bench against Norwich, Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez slips a few places in our rankings. Although the forthcoming fixtures (sot, CPL, wba, WAT, new, MUN) are fairly favourable for Claudio Ranieri’s side, the uncertainty over Mahrez’ pitch time hurts his prospects at this point.

Goals from the penalty spot in his last two matches mean Crystal Palace’s Yohan Cabaye finds a place on our ladder in our latest update. The 6.5-valued midfielder also bagged an assist in the 2-0 win against West Brom, and netted for France over the recent break, underlining his buoyant form ahead of a favourable upcoming schedule for the Eagles (WHM, lei, MUN, liv, SUN, NEW).

Although he has a goal and two assists from his last three appearances, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is clearly struggling to live up to his 11.3 price tag in FPL. The Belgian is third among midfielders for chances created over the last four Gameweeks, with 15, and does have a good run of fixtures (AVL, whm, LIV, sto, NOR, tot) on the horizon. Hazard looks well behind the likes of Sanchez and De Bruyne in terms of the premium midfield options available to Fantasy managers, and may struggle to attract further investment until Jose Mourinho’s side shows signs of improvement.

With some difficult fixtures (eve, MCI, cpl) in the short-term, Man United’s Juan Mata stays around halfway up our ladder. The underlying statistics are also not hugely encouraging for the Spaniard, having only managed 10 penalty box touches in his last four appearances, and only registered two shots from inside the box, But the 8.9-rated midfielder does face some kinder match-ups from Gameweek 12 onwards (WBA, wat, lei).

While Swansea’s Andre Ayew returned to form with a goal in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham, and faces a favourable run of fixtures (STO, avl, ARS, nor, BOU) over the next few weeks, the drop off in some of his attacking statistics are a cause for concern. The Ghanaian attempted 10 shots from inside the box during the first four Gameweeks of the season, but only managed three in his last four outings. Priced at 7.2 in FPL, though, the former Marseille attacker still looks good value.

His assists against Palace and City may have gone under the radar, but Christian Eriksen definitely stated his claim for consideration in our five-man midfields with two magnificent free-kicks against Swansea. The Denmark international, available at 8.3 in FPL, only has an ownership of 3%, and with four home matches in the next six (LIV, bou, AVL, ars, WHM, CHE), could warrant some consideration as a differential for those looking to make up lost ground.

Having started Arsenal’s last five matches as the lone forward, the stock of Theo Walcott continues to rise. As already mentioned, the Gunners forthcoming fixtures aren’t the easiest, but given the England international leads all midfielders for shots in the box, with 17, and is so favourably priced at just 8.6 in FPL, there’s little doubt he holds more upside than virtually any other midfielder at this point. Investing in Walcott does carry a risk, though, given Olivier Giroud is also likely to earn starts in attack for the north London outfit.

Although Everton’s Ross Barkley has blanked in his last three matches, with the Toffees schedule turning favourably from Gameweek 11 onwards (SUN, whm, AVL, bou), we’re keeping faith in the England international. The 6.9-priced midfielder has created 13 chances over the last four Gameweeks, more than the likes of Mata (seven) and Walcott (five), and should be able to deliver on those numbers with those kind fixtures on the horizon. In the short-term, the match-ups against Man United and Arsenal could yield further blanks, however.

With a goal and an assist in tough fixtures against Chelsea and City, Newcastle’s Georginio Wijnaldum sneaks into our rankings this week. The Magpies face a very favourable run of fixtures (NOR, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cpl) over the next six Gameweeks, so the 6.8-valued Dutchman certainly looks one to monitor at the very least. He has only managed one shot from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, however.

Although Jeremain Lens will miss Sam Allardyce’s first match in charge for Sunderland at West Brom, the rest of the Black Cats’ fixtures over the next six weeks (NEW, eve, SOT, cpl, STO) mean the Dutch international clings onto a place on our ladder. The 6.5-rated wide man has scored twice and provided three assists so far this season, and should Big Sam be able to turn things around at the Stadium of Light, it’s likely that Lens will be central to any improvement.

While there is currently a feel-good factor sweeping around Anfield following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp, the difficulty of his first six matches in charge (tot, SOT, che, CPL, mci, SWA) means Philippe Coutinho only fills the final spot in our rankings. The Brazilian has encouragingly managed 20 goal attempts in his last three appearances though, and should be central to the German’s plans, but with so many other in-form options for FPL bosses to ponder over in midfield, the 8.1-priced Coutinho may well struggle to attract investment until the schedule turns more favourably for the Reds.

    New post, new repost 😀

First attempt at a WC team, thoughts much appreciated:

    Bellerin, Kolarov, Moreno, Huth, Davies;

    Sanchez, Mane, Payet, Mahrez, KDB,

    Pelle, Costa, Ighalo

Looks good. Personally I would rather have Lukaku than Costa and would swap Kolarov out (injured and rotation risk with Clichy back and Champs League games).

    Butland - Elliot

    Bellerin - Dawson - Francis - Davies - Souare

    Martial - Pelle - Vardy

Mahrez's been benched once, that doesn't make him a great rotation risk. Walcott has started 5 this season and has a long history of starting on bench. Giroud hasn't gone anywhere. People here have a bad habit of ejaculating prematurely.

Something funny I just noticed. Has anyone else seen that Aguero has risen in price by 0.1 this gameweek so far? Suspect due to all the knee-jerk transfers right after his rampage last GW.

    For example:
    NTI this GW: 134k
    NTI out this GW: 70k

Some pissed off new Aguero owners out there I bet.

(Apologies if this has been posted before - I visit the site VERY sporadically).

Right. Been working on next year's team. Assumptions are that Newcastle, Sunderland and Villa go down. Brighton, Middlesbrough and Reading to come up.

    Butland. Gomes.

Shaw. Bellerin. Francis. Middlesbrough 4.5. Reading 4.5.

Sanchez. KdB. Hazard Sako. Dele Alli.

    Blackman (Reading). Pelle. Aguero.

To carry this over from the last article, I think Bony can deliver over the next few weeks. He is fit and pretty much guaranteed a run as starting striker. Most importantly, Aguero is out, meaning City have to find a way to make Bony work, and the obvious approach given who is fit is pacey wide attackers with Sterling and Navas, using Bony much more as a target man, or on the end of crosses. Plus some nice fixtures...

    Just a thought.

    Some advice most welcome:

    A) Sell Aguero -4 (bought for 13.0m so can take a 0.1m price drop) for pretty much anyone I like.

    B) Play Ighalo (3-5-2) instead and deal with Aguero next GW for FT

You don't think Ighalo could outscore any other forward with a 4 point head start?

He very well could, but there is no point holding onto a 13.0m player that is injured, surely he is not the only problem in your team? Could you not use your FT on another player in a heartbeat?. I would bet my house that Pelle will outscore Ighalo this week.

Haha almost the same front 8, only I have Ayew instead of Mane 🙂
Ighalo could score against Arsenal though, so not that bad, but I'm tempted by Pelle/ Costa.

Pelle would need to get a goal and an assist to better Ighalo +4 points and I don't think it's worth the risk. However I do have Mane as SOT 'cover' so it spreads the risk out a bit more

I have the exact front 8 as you. Why a goal and an assist? He would need a goal just to break even.

you have a good front 8 😉 well say he gets a goal which is 6 points, Ighalo would just need to play for it to be a tie, so Pelle would nee additional points to make the hit worthwhile, saving will also give me a bigger picture next week. Having said that, if Sanchez or Kolarov are ruled out then I would have to take a hit as Francis and Targett are not suitable cover

You are disregarding the future points benefit and the benefit of getting the transfer done this week rather than next, meaning you can adjust your team further next week.

Do you like to stay ahead of the curve or do you wait for it to change before adjusting?

Anticipating: Can save future transfers, differential pts can give edge over rivals, more fun

Playing safe: Avoids misjudging the curve, easier to maintain high ranks over multiple seasons.

    .
This could be applied to Hazard at the moment. Do you anticipate an upturn in points? Will you only get him when he shows serious form and hop on with everyone else, or will you get him before the masses?

    1. RustyBz
      • 9 Years

I think I was in a similar predicament with Sanchez and I gambled with it, but think I'll wait until Hazard starts producing to bring him in.

I'm 50/50 if I should get Hazard in this week, it's him or KdB. The only thing in Hazard's favour is that I've got Sterling for City cover

Sometimes you keep Hazard over Sanchez on your week 7 WC and it all goes pear shaped but then Aguero gets injured and you can use two FTs to get Sanchez to go with Hazard for free.

So far behind the curve that I am ahead of it...

Bit of mixture for me. I don't have high expectation from Hazard. I did toure > hazard two weeks ago

      Got 10 points so far

I have had Hazard, Mata, Payet and Ozil in last 2 weeks so that kind of covers Sanchez although does not cover KDB + Sanchez.

One stat I like about Hazard is his touches in final 3rd, his confidence is very low atm, I just hope he stats shooting more

Depends on the circumstances and which part of the season. Now Safe transfers- jump onto form rather than anticipating it. If I need to catch someone then gambles must be taken!

But to answer a bit more seriously, I have seen time and again over the seasons that an international break can do wonders for out of form teams defensively and attackers individually. I think they are the hardest to plan around, and not just because of the injuries we all deal with.

I like to stay ahead of the curve, but with an element of safety. But its not easy, will inevitably result in lost points, but hopefully some gained and more fun too.

This can also apply to hopping off bandwagons (actually it applies more so, as i find folk are quick to hop on, but slow to hop off)

I think Hazard's points return should improve slightly, but i doubt enough to justify his price tag. For that to happen, Chelsea as a whole need to improve.

Until he stops delivering surely there is no need to sell him? Or any 'bandwagon' for that matter....fair enough if they have had a couple of barren weeks but if someone is getting attacking returns for a number of GWs with no blanks then don't see why you'd want to sell

        HAZARD’S SPOT OF BOTHER

Eden Hazard scored one penalty and missed another as Belgium romped to a 4-1 victory over Andorra. As well as the afore-mentioned De Bruyne the likes of Simon Mignolet, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld all started for Wilmots’ side, whilst Nacer Chadli appeared off the bench as a late sub.

The Scout Says: Hazard has now missed two of his three penalties for club and country this campaign, following an abysmal second effort for the Red Devils last night. Although the reigning PFA Player of the Year notched one goal and two assists in his previous three league outings, Hazard’s performances – bar the Arsenal encounter – have fallen well short of his lofty standards. From a statistical viewpoint, the 11.3-priced midfielder ranks joint-third among midfielders for key passes (28), but is ranked 32nd for attempts (12), underlining his limited goal threat. That being said, his 27% ownership will be hopeful of a revival as the Blues prepare to host an Aston Villa outfit that shipped eight goals in their last three road clashes.

Thanks gentlemen. Hazard continues to flirt with me but that amount of money for a player not hitting form yet is a dilemma.

I'd go to Sanchez or KDB for a hit, otherwise just play and hope he starts

The temptation to got with Costa is too damn high. I know that Pelle is the smarter choice but when I see that only 5.5% have Costa in their teams, the devil comes out in me a little.

Yaya should play hopefully. Your bench isn't that bad for this particular gwk, Swansea have Stoke at home, play Williams.

Maybe think of taking a hit and getting Kolarov and Kun out.

This seems to be wildcard material. Well, maybe not.

Your defence isn't actually that bad. Somewhat expensive, but clean sheets are rare so chasing the next best defense is not neccessarily gonna work out. Janmaat will be fine I guess, almost two weeks of rest will do him good. Azpi seems nailed on and Villa is not the time to sell. Kola is a wait and see, while Williams is decent if somewhat unspectular replacement who has decent fixtures.

I would give Yaya a chance, if he is fit he is a beast. And he has penalties, plus free kick skills. Playing with Bony will do him good, it's just the fitness that is bothering me. Pedro stays because of more pressing issues, but is on borrowed time. Mahrez remains great value, even if he has to compete against Mane and KDB etc for places and points.

Your forwards are also okay. You didn't go for Vardy, so screw him! Sakho is fine, and you can't blame Martial for that Arsenal collapse. Everton and City are tough fixtures, but he has shown ability and Louis will demand improvement from his team. Switch Aguero out for literally anyone, but most likely Pelle, and upgrade Shaqiri to Sanchez and you will have succesfully kept your wildcard if you ask me.

Nice to hear that you found it helpful!

Resisting the temptation of wildcarding or following the herd is tough sometimes, but while your team is somewhat different than all the Pelle/Vardy/Martial and KDB/Mane/Alexis/Payet teams it is not that bad at all. It just looks bad, haha! Redmond has been doing nicely also, so I would hold that wildcard in your pocket for now and do 2 max 3 transfers!

          Good luck!

Yeah exactly I thought that a WC was a necessity.
Appreciate your help- I went for Shaq - Sanchez & Aguero - Vardy.

Going to leave it until Friday to see if I need to take another -4.. Hopefully that won't be the case.

            Thanks Daaf!!

struggling to pick 3 strikers on the wildcard.
Pelle is a definite, fixtures are just too strong but then can't decide on the other 2 -

    - Vardy
    - Lukaku
    - Ighalo
    - Martial
    - Costa

    Any suggestions ?

I have Vardy and very happy with that.
And am considering Ighalo or Lukaku. If Ighalo then I can get Hazard and play 352 most of the time. Lukaku has 2 tough games and that is stopping my a little. Costa has no form, at least yet.
      What do you think?

      - Vardy - I like
      - Lukaku - only on GW11
      - Ighalo - I like as a 3rd fwd
      - Martial - only on GW11
      - Costa - prefer Haz if you're going with Chelsea

WC - trying not to be too knee-jerky looking at a mix of form and fixtures:

    Hennessey//Butland
    Moreno//Dawson//Fernandez//Simpson//Davies
    Hazard//Mane//Sanchez//KDB//Payet
    Pelle//Ighalo//Vardy

.7 in the bank. What you boys think?

I transferred Mane for Pedro for price drop/rise, I have another FT in the bag, but with Kun injured and Pelle being the popular - somehow annoyingly I felt I like I suffered a price drop.

    Any advice?
