The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 9 – The Midfielders

After assessing the risers and fallers among the Defence on Saturday, our attention this afternoon turns to the midfield. There is no shortage of in-form options to choose from, with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez moving to the top of our ladder this week, though Kevin de Bruyne and Sadio Mane are hot on his heels following their double-digit scores in Gameweek 8.

Having cast aside his scoring drought, Alexis Sanchez highlighted his explosive potential over the last two Gameweeks, scoring five goals and bagging 36 goals in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). The former Barcelona attacker, available at 11.2 in FPL, lies second among midfielders for shots in the box over the last four Gameweeks with 16, but does face a fairly tricky run of fixtures (wat, EVE, swa, TOT, wba, nor) over the coming period.

One player who is close to matching Sanchez’ output is Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne. The 10.3-priced Belgian has scored three goals and provided two assists in his last three outings, and faces four home fixtures (BOU, NOR, LIV, SOT) over the next six Gameweeks, along with trips to Man United and Aston Villa. De Bruyne has only registered four shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, however, although he has also created a more impressive 13 chances over the same period. With doubts surrounding Yaya Toure and David Silva in the City midfield, the Belgian looks vital to his side’s prospects of remaining at the summit.

While Southampton’s Sadio Mane comes in a lot cheaper than Sanchez and De Bruyne, at just 7.9 in FPL, the Senegal international is certainly capable of delivering double-figure scores, as he has done twice over the last five Gameweeks. The Saints attacker has found the back of the net in his last two appearances, and has four favourable match-ups (LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO, mci) over the next month or so in which to continue his fantastic form.

West Ham’s Dimitri Payet remains towards the top of our ladder after registering attacking returns for the fourth match running, scoring in the Hammers 2-2 draw at Sunderland in Gameweek 8. The France international’s price has risen to 8.1 in FPL on the back of his outstanding form, but the former Marseille man does have a slightly more testing schedule (cpl, CHE, wat, EVE, tot, WBA) over the coming period.

After being surprisingly dropped to the bench against Norwich, Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez slips a few places in our rankings. Although the forthcoming fixtures (sot, CPL, wba, WAT, new, MUN) are fairly favourable for Claudio Ranieri’s side, the uncertainty over Mahrez’ pitch time hurts his prospects at this point.

Goals from the penalty spot in his last two matches mean Crystal Palace’s Yohan Cabaye finds a place on our ladder in our latest update. The 6.5-valued midfielder also bagged an assist in the 2-0 win against West Brom, and netted for France over the recent break, underlining his buoyant form ahead of a favourable upcoming schedule for the Eagles (WHM, lei, MUN, liv, SUN, NEW).

Although he has a goal and two assists from his last three appearances, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is clearly struggling to live up to his 11.3 price tag in FPL. The Belgian is third among midfielders for chances created over the last four Gameweeks, with 15, and does have a good run of fixtures (AVL, whm, LIV, sto, NOR, tot) on the horizon. Hazard looks well behind the likes of Sanchez and De Bruyne in terms of the premium midfield options available to Fantasy managers, and may struggle to attract further investment until Jose Mourinho’s side shows signs of improvement.

With some difficult fixtures (eve, MCI, cpl) in the short-term, Man United’s Juan Mata stays around halfway up our ladder. The underlying statistics are also not hugely encouraging for the Spaniard, having only managed 10 penalty box touches in his last four appearances, and only registered two shots from inside the box, But the 8.9-rated midfielder does face some kinder match-ups from Gameweek 12 onwards (WBA, wat, lei).

While Swansea’s Andre Ayew returned to form with a goal in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham, and faces a favourable run of fixtures (STO, avl, ARS, nor, BOU) over the next few weeks, the drop off in some of his attacking statistics are a cause for concern. The Ghanaian attempted 10 shots from inside the box during the first four Gameweeks of the season, but only managed three in his last four outings. Priced at 7.2 in FPL, though, the former Marseille attacker still looks good value.

His assists against Palace and City may have gone under the radar, but Christian Eriksen definitely stated his claim for consideration in our five-man midfields with two magnificent free-kicks against Swansea. The Denmark international, available at 8.3 in FPL, only has an ownership of 3%, and with four home matches in the next six (LIV, bou, AVL, ars, WHM, CHE), could warrant some consideration as a differential for those looking to make up lost ground.

Having started Arsenal’s last five matches as the lone forward, the stock of Theo Walcott continues to rise. As already mentioned, the Gunners forthcoming fixtures aren’t the easiest, but given the England international leads all midfielders for shots in the box, with 17, and is so favourably priced at just 8.6 in FPL, there’s little doubt he holds more upside than virtually any other midfielder at this point. Investing in Walcott does carry a risk, though, given Olivier Giroud is also likely to earn starts in attack for the north London outfit.

Although Everton’s Ross Barkley has blanked in his last three matches, with the Toffees schedule turning favourably from Gameweek 11 onwards (SUN, whm, AVL, bou), we’re keeping faith in the England international. The 6.9-priced midfielder has created 13 chances over the last four Gameweeks, more than the likes of Mata (seven) and Walcott (five), and should be able to deliver on those numbers with those kind fixtures on the horizon. In the short-term, the match-ups against Man United and Arsenal could yield further blanks, however.

With a goal and an assist in tough fixtures against Chelsea and City, Newcastle’s Georginio Wijnaldum sneaks into our rankings this week. The Magpies face a very favourable run of fixtures (NOR, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cpl) over the next six Gameweeks, so the 6.8-valued Dutchman certainly looks one to monitor at the very least. He has only managed one shot from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, however.

Although Jeremain Lens will miss Sam Allardyce’s first match in charge for Sunderland at West Brom, the rest of the Black Cats’ fixtures over the next six weeks (NEW, eve, SOT, cpl, STO) mean the Dutch international clings onto a place on our ladder. The 6.5-rated wide man has scored twice and provided three assists so far this season, and should Big Sam be able to turn things around at the Stadium of Light, it’s likely that Lens will be central to any improvement.

While there is currently a feel-good factor sweeping around Anfield following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp, the difficulty of his first six matches in charge (tot, SOT, che, CPL, mci, SWA) means Philippe Coutinho only fills the final spot in our rankings. The Brazilian has encouragingly managed 20 goal attempts in his last three appearances though, and should be central to the German’s plans, but with so many other in-form options for FPL bosses to ponder over in midfield, the 8.1-priced Coutinho may well struggle to attract investment until the schedule turns more favourably for the Reds.

    Would love some further feedback:

    1) Costa And wijnaldum/cabaye

    2) Walcott and Lukaku

    3) Haz and Ayoze

Currently 2 or 3 looks good to me. 2 edges it but Haz cap option is something i cant overlook.

WC or take some select hits? 0FT, 0.3 itb. Thanks!

    Schmeichel, Butland
Kolarov *, Koscielny *, Williams, Francis, Prodl
    KDB, Sanchez, Payet, Mahrez, Westwood
    Aguero, Pelle, Vardy

    Ideas:

    Aguero > Sturridge/Lukaku
    Koscielny > Bellerin
    Westwood > Mane/Walcott

Kinda stuck. Would really appreciate some votes on WC or hits. Thanks again.

West Ham away could be a tough fixture, no push over and great record this year versus the big teams.

          Bilic has galvanised them IMO.

De Bruyne has the form and some plum home games.

You may be right there, but it is a local derby where CHE have a good record and for all their efforts away from home, they seem to pretty loose defensively at home this season - 3rd most goals conceded, 2nd most big chances conceded.

As I'm WCing in GW11 I'm only looking at the next 2 weeks and KDB has mun as one of them - that's the only reason I'm not completely sold on him.

A Chelsea double up is a big show of faith in a team that is publicly backing their manager after their worst start in the league inover 30years though.

People say Hazard ticking over points, its nonsense though.

He got a goal in FPL that was stripped in real life. And an assist for a sideways pass for a Ramires wonder goal.

I'm not so sure about him at the minute.

Aye, it would be a huge leap of faith not really backed up by stats (very unlike me). But, worth also considering what a mess AVL are in as well - 1 point from their last 7 (at home to a dire SUN) and they shipped 13 goals in this fixture in the past 3 years (4.33 per game!).

    Team Form Focus - Gameweek 9 - Part 1.
Lukaku is in the 'Player Spotlight' in my weekly article, and I wanted to cover the topic of him being 'a troll' separate from my actual article.

Romelu Lukaku has been branded 'a troll' amongst the community, and managers believe that the Belgian only scores in the 'harder' games - which I believe isn't true.

I'll start this analysis from when Lukaku joined Everton in the 13/14 season. Hard games are against Chelsea, Man City, Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham, Easy is against any other team.

    13/14:
    Total - 15 goals, 8 assists (33 games, 2,594 minutes.)
    Easy - 10 goals, 5 assists.
    Hard - 5 goals, 3 assists.
    Home - 10 goals, 4 assists.
    Away - 5 goals, 4 assists.

    14/15:
    Total - 10 goals, 5 assists (36 games, 2,866 minutes.)
    Easy - 10 goals, 4 assists.
    Hard - 0 goals, 1 assists.
    Home - 5 goals, 4 assists.
    Away - 5 goals, 1 assist.

It is clear that Lukaku performs much better in the 'easier' fixtures and at home, looking back at his two full seasons at Everton.

How often does Romelu Lukaku blank?
Looking back at his debut season at Everton, the longest Lukaku went without scoring or assisting a goal was 4 games which happened just once. The second longest was just 2 games.

If we look at last season, when Everton also had a European campaign, the longest Lukaku went without scoring or assisting was 6 games which happened just once. The second longest was 3 - he was injured in the middle of these games though.

The 6 games that Luaku struggled in last season was during the busy period of Christmas (20th Decemeber - 19th January.) It is also clear that Everton struggled themselves during this time, only scoring 3 goals in two of the games and picking up just 2 points from a possible 18.

Another thing to note is his 'minutes per return' for each season in the league (combining goals and assists together) - 13/14: 113 minutes, 14/15: 191 minutes, 15/16: 99 minutes. Lukaku is on course for his best season at Everton yet.

Lukaku and Everton had a tough time last year, which is probably a result of playing in the Europa League. Lukaku has started the season off well, and myths about the player shouldn't put managers off transferring him into their teams - who I see as a perfect Agüero replacement.

I'm not saying you're wrong but there's a skew here that I'd like to see addressed: there are more than twice as many easy fixtures as hard by your definition, so raw goals aren't quite valid. Do you have the numbers for goals per game split by hard and easy?

If GPG is split like the numbers of easy / hard fixtures then that's approaching roughly similar numbers of goals in each, which seems like quite an unusual ratio. I'd like to see some other players GPG split for comparison. I imagine Sanchez's tally is much less evenly split.

Not to say I don't applaud myth-busting efforts though. Just want this one to dig slightly deeper. I'd love to think Lukaku doesn't actually hate me 😉

        • 11 Years

Yeah, I get what your saying. But I'm sure he was only injured for a few games each season, so it's roughly 12 hard games and 26 easy that he played in. But it's clear that he does score a healthy amount in the easy games too.

That Christmas period you talk about is probably what cemented his reputation on here. Everyone loaded up on Toffee assets for an amazing fixture run. Many, like me went double defence plus Lukaku and it was an absolute disaster 😀

I had already decided to get him for Kun, but I'm just interested in the stats from an academic point of view. I think his easy/hard ratio is unusually even which makes him a bit unpredictable. But I'd like to know for sure how true that is. Two seasons ago he was in and out of my team like a yo-yo as I tried to follow his form and fixtures. At the end of the season he'd been in for 19 game weeks and out for 19 game weeks - his points per game while out of my team was over twice his ppg while in my team 😀

Looking at his history, it seems that you need to keep him in for quite a while. But if his easy/hard ratio is even, then surely that means he's a better pick than most because he has the capabilities to score in any game? The point I was trying to make was that he doesn't just score in the harder games.

Yep, that much is clear. You just have to treat him differently - fixtures don't mean as much for him as they do for other players. As long as you bear that in mind then he's very 'ownable' (I hope!)

that bit from 2 seasons ago is about right for me I think I bought and sold him 6 times and got about 4PPG from him

His PPG when I didn't own him was probably at least double that

Do you consider that Lukaku played more games vs easy teams (about 15 teams) than vs tough teams?

No I didn't until Roscola pointed it out. But the fact remains that he doesn't just score in the harder games, which many managers assume.

Help please! Current team is :-

    Myhill Mignolet (useless)
Cedric, Darmian, Cameron, Dier (suspended), Sagna (not playing due to Zab?)
KDB, Payet, Mahrez, Mane, Westwood (useless)
    Vardy, Martial, Aguero (injured)
£1.9m itb but already used my FT

Trying to choose between the below :-

a> Hold firm - no more transfers this week but have to play Westwood
b> Sell Aguero and buy Pelle (or Costa for differential)
c> Sell Aguero and Sagna and buy Pelle and Bellerin

    Will Sagna ever play?

After a tricky start to the season for fixtures it's amazing to see Palace having conceded fewer goals than any other team (joint)...Surely Dann is worth more than a C for form on the Watchlist. They're playing well.

They don't keep many clean sheets though. Looking at when Pardew took over last year (GW 22) to the end of the season, they conceded the joint 8th least amount of goals - 9 off of 1st, but only kept 2 clean sheets - which was the joint worst.

A lot of people asking the same question, who to get in for Kun?

For me, I am going with Costa. Chelsea have to turn the corner soon and I feel it could start this weekend against Villa. Smells a bit punty, but we know he can give serious returns in FPL and he is due so I am taking the chance. Behind in my leagues so I need to get in early, ahead of the curve. That's my thought process anyway.

So the correct option for you may actually depend on how you are doing in your leagues. If you are doing well and need to play it safe get Pelle but if you behind and chasing, get Costa.

    What do you guys reckon?

Surely by your logic it depends who the people in your mini leagues have got.
You're not gonna gain ground if you get Costa and they all have Costa,

I agree, it's part of it alright. They don't have him. Definitely part of it would be making sure that competitors don't, i.e. make sure he is a differential.

As I see it its a choice between Costa, Lukaku, Pelle, Martial or even maybe Bony unless you want to go for a cheapie (Vardy or Ighalo) and it depends on the rest of your team i.e. if you have Mane or Barkley then the need for Pelle/Lukaku is lessened.

Im waiting to see what happens the rest of this week, I am a chelsea fan and not sure I can bring in any chelsea players yet.

I don't own Vardy but if I was on WC I would rather have him than Mahrez. You can bring in Martial when their fixtures improve.

    Dawson or Janmaat?

On wildcard and need to fill a defender spot. Got Coleman, Bellerin, Cedric and Simpson atm.

Dawson's fixtures get terrible but he plays for Pulis.

Janmaat's fixtures are great and his offensive stats are too, but he plays for Newcastle and Krul is out.

Opinions? Or a different defender altogether?

Dawson has a couple of nice fixtures. I'd have him if you're happy getting rid soon. If not get Janmaat.

Evening, any further changes needed to make to my team going into next GW?

    Begovic (Elliot)
    Kolarov Williams Dawson (Cresswell Nyoms)
    San[C]hez KDB Mahrez Payet Hoolahan
    Berahino Pelle (Diouf)

Aguero > Pelle leaves me with so much cash

I have faith in Berahino, not as much as i did going into last GW because he was taken off at half time, but faith nonetheless lol. Against Sunderland this week, could be alright. Looking to get him rid for Lukaku in due time anyway
