There’s much for us to consider ahead of Gameweek 9 in what has been an eventful last fortnight. Jurgen Klopp and Sam Allardyce’s impact at the Liverpool and Sunderland helms. Graziano Pelle, Diego Costa and Wilfried Bony’s chance to step up as our Sergio Aguero replacements. Riyad Mahrez’ minutes, Arsene Wenger’s teamsheet and Ross Barkley’s form ahead of Everton’s kind fixtures are also on our lunchtime menu.

Klopp’s “Heavy Metal” impact…
Liverpool’s new manager has no easy task in his first match in charge, as the Merseysiders visit a Spurs side that put four past City in their previous home fixture. Nonetheless, Fantasy managers will be keen to assess the effect of Klopp’s energetic “heavy metal” football as we look for signs of their main contenders in the post-Brendan Rodgers era. Full-back pair Nathaniel Clyne and Alberto Moreno will be tasked with bombing forward to supply width from deep in Klopp’s default 4-2-3-1, whilst James Milner and Philippe Coutinho look pivotal to their new manager’s chances of making an instant impression.

Mourinho’s men in the must-win scenario…
Chelsea have so far offered a dire defence of their title but at some point, you’d think, Jose Mourinho’s men will finally click. A home clash with Villa may well prove the turning point in a season that’s disappointed at both ends of the pitch and the likes of Eden Hazard and Diego Costa will be looking to step up their campaigns against Tim Sherwood’s strugglers. Pedro owners, meanwhile, may well have to reconsider if the Spaniard is benched again – Willian’s brace for Brazil took his tally to five goals in as may matches for club and country and he may well be set to keep the former Barcelona man out of the first XI once again.

Pelle’s audition as the Aguero stand-in…
With the City striker sidelined, the big Italian has been the preferred replacement for FPL managers, with over 230,000 drafting him in over the past week-and-a-half. Pelle certainly looks the perfect blend of form and fixtures as the schedule takes a turn for the better for Ronaldo Koeman’s outfit. With five goals and as many assists already, he’s played a part in ten of the Saints’ 13 strikes and, having racked up double-figure hauls against United and Chelsea in the last three, there’s no denying his fixture-proof appeal as Leicester roll up to St Mary’s.

The new ‘unbreakable’ Crystal Palace…
Alan Pardew’s side sit fourth in the table after a run of matches that’s seen them concede just three times in the last five – despite squaring up to Chelsea, City and Spurs over that period. With Damien Delany back in training, Alan Pardew has decisions to make at the back, though – does he disrupt a settled defence for the visit of free-scoring West Ham? Four home matches in six and a trip to Leicester affords the Eagles a chance to strengthen their case for inclusion at both ends of the pitch.

Barkley on Rooney’s stage…
The Everton playmaker carried his domestic form onto the international arena over the last few days, bagging a goal and assist over England’s pair of internationals. Barkley welcomes United to Goodison having already equalled his two goals and three assists from the previous campaign and, with the Toffees schedule turning very kind from Gameweek 11, many Fantasy managers will be eyeing him up for a spot in our five-man midfields.

A Cherry Picking Bony….
The Ivorian’s switch from Swansea to the Etihad last January hasn’t quite gone to plan. With Manuel Pellegrini preferring a lone striker system in order to get the best out of the Argentine, Bony has remained a peripheral figure and has managed a mere 235 minutes this term. Given that Aguero could miss City’s next seven in all competitions, Bony – who netted 28 times in a season-and-a-half at the Liberty – looks a real short-term differential as the league leaders go up against Bournemouth, Norwich and Villa in the next four Gameweeks.

Ranieri’s approach at St Mary’s…
The Tinkerman sprung a major surprise by benching Riyad Mahrez for the trip Norwich last time out, much to the chagrin of the Algerian’s 54% FPL owners. Ranieri’s decision – based on the Canaries’ tendency to attack on the flanks – was backed up with a 2-1 win as Mahrez warmed the bench from start to finish. Next up is a trip to Southampton, where wide men Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane have both shown superb form – another spot amongst the subs and many will be reassessing the Leicester winger as a mainstay in their starting line-ups, too.

Big Sam’s defensive solution…
The new Sunderland boss begins his tenure with a trip to West Brom this weekend as the schedule turns in favour of the Black Cats. Having shipped 18 goals, the Wearsiders are in desperate need of a defensive fix if they are to climb out of the bottom three in what has become an annual scramble for safety. With every defender bar Patrick van Aanholt priced under 4.5, the cut-price Sunderland backline could soon be on our radars if Allardyce can make an impact and steer them up the table.

Wenger’s Bayern rotation…
Just two matches into the Champions League campaign and Arsenal are already staring at the exit door. With back-to-back clashes against Bayern Munich on the horizon, Arsene Wenger looks up against it if he’s to somehow steer his side into the knockout stages. With a trip to Watford up next, Arsenal’s weekend teamsheet will be keenly awaited, with Wenger surely having one eye on Tuesday’s visit of Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Rob Elliot option…
Tim Krul’s season-ending injury hands Rob Elliott the chance to establish himself as the Newcastle number one. In a season where our sub-4.5-priced options have been very slim at best, Elliot has the fixtures to prove real value over the coming months. Given that fellow back-up stopper Karl Darlow is still a month away from returning, Elliot has the platform to cement a regular role under Steve McClaren, offering us a secure option at just 4.0 in FPL.

I can't see Wenger resting Sanchez, he's hit great form in the past few weeks.

On the other hand Arsenal play Bayern in consecutive CL games so resting their best player is a possibility.

    Ruddy
    Ward Kolarov Cedric
    Mahrez Alexis KDB Payet
    Berahino Martial Pellé (c)

    Ruddy; Wanyama, Francis, Oxford.

What do you reckon? I already took a hit to do Kun>Pellé, so I'm pretty sure I shouldn't take a -8, and hope Kolarov and Mahrez start to at least field 11 players (Wardinho is just there in case Pardew sees that Wardinho is irreplaceable).

Costa then? Or too much of a risk after not showing form? He's been on a strict training regime to get his fitness back... I'm hoping a hattrick this weekend

Potentially a good option, but bringing in an injury prone striker doesn't seem like the best move right now, given the state of many of our teams.

Very good. Form could be an issue and might dip after a few games back. Pelle on form. Lukaku on sort of form, can be inconsistent. Pelle not long enough in PL to decide if consistency is his thing.

Are you considering Sturridge because his price is close to Aguero? Lots of good cheaper options, Berahino, Ighalo, Vardy etc.

      1. Quinny___
        • 11 Years

I have Vardy and Pelle. Price really isnt an issue. I just think he's a top player, leading the line of a team who will all be out to impress the new manager.

Fixtures are a worry but Spurs arent the best defensively, Soton away are the best either. Chelsea are bang out of form. 3 good teams but there will be goals.

Lukaku fixtures are probably worse. United and Arsenal, two teams who keep the ball well.

I wouldn't worry about him being injury prone - he's only meant to act as a place-holder for Aguero, right? I would be more concerned about their fixtures.

With doubt about 3 of my midfielders (Sako, Mahrez,Sanchez) starting, I think I'm taking a hit for Sako, who's the least likely to start. Who would you prefer:

    A) Mane - great form, doubts about him starting this weekend
    B) Barkley - lacking consistency, scored for England though
    C) Cabaye - great player, not the best fixtures
    D) Redmond - budget option
    E) Walcott - most explosive, but rotation risk

Leaning towards B or C myself, should be nailed on at least

no way. Lewandowski was benched against Wolfsburg. Came in and scored 5.
Alexis is in similar shape and form as the Pole.

I think Alexis may not start, but he will play in this game and there is big chance he also scores. Although not 5 maybe 🙂

So. I wouldn't risk not having him in his form.

United's fixtures are about to take a turn for the better. That might turn out to be a blinding decision, if a little early.

Maybe. I do like Mane though and I think it would balance the team better.

Too late now anyway and as you say I have to stick with it as things should improve.

Good option but I prefer the headache of squeezing Aguero back in because my replacement is playing regularly and bang on from

He's just been poor every time I've seen him for City. I disagreed with Mark's line of thinking on the Scoutcast, that if Bony had played against Newcastle he'd have finished Aguero's chances; it presupposed that Bony would have had the ability and positioning to GET those chances.

Anyway, he's a decent option I guess, but I'm avoiding for now. I'm also not sure he'll start.

I don't even think he would have scored ALL of those chances. That turn and chip over the keeper was world class, and the curling effort from outside the box was also exceptional.

And as you say, wrong to assume he would have been in the right position for the other three

I agree. Avoiding for now - he's shown absolutely nothing in a City shirt to suggest otherwise but there is always the appeal of "he's the main striker playing up front for City".

Yep, I'm trying to avoid that thinking, it's failed so badly before (Remy springs to mind). I think the same thing is in play with people buying Costa now.

I agree, and there's evidence. After he came on, he had an OKish chance from a Kolarov whipped in cross that he couldn't get on target. If Aguero was still playing, it would've been even more points!

He is a massive differential and one I will be gambling on. He effectively has 6-8 weeks to prove his worth to the football club and show Pellegrini that he has what it takes to lead the line for City when Aguero’s petulant hamstrings flare up. Interestingly enough he is actually averaging a greater minute per attempt ratio than both Pelle, Sturridge and Costa and they are three of the more popular Aguero replacements at the moment. Without dwelling too much into the member statistics Bony has tremendous upside potential especially given the fact there is no forwards screaming out to be selecting in our teams and if it does go wrong he’s an easy direct swap for Pelle.

With home games against Bournemouth and Norwich and an away game against Aston Villa in City’s next 4 games it’s definitely a differential with the ability to pay off big time if only temporarily whilst Aguero sits on the sidelines.

Commonly among my rivals, nationally (8k in England) and in mini leagues, are Payet, Ayew, KDB, Kolorov

Alternative list of players to watch:

    Moreno
    Sturridge
    Mata
    Eriksen
    Hoolahan
    Souare

Happened to be lucky enough to have Sergio (c) last week and I'm sitting at 19k currently; but looking to push on, I think I'm giving myself the best chance of this by picking these players? what are the opinions on here?

Can anyone tell me if Sanchez is still struggling with injury, or is concealing his injury to play forcefully?

    I'm confused!

Had an injury before he went played 180+ mins. Wenger wanted more protection and will assess him when he sees him. No new injury has occurred but he may 'protect' him for the Bayern game

It's either Chamberlain starting with Sanchez off the bench after HT, or vice versa should Wenger wants to protect him. That's going to be tricky!

Since its "only" Watford and all players in good form, he might rest him or at least sub him half time or something and let Walcott and Giroud play more? I think I will not let him be captain at least...

Haven't decided yet. Most will say Pelle or KDB I should think with doubts over Sanchez
