After analysing the teams with the strongest upcoming schedules yesterday, our attention this afternoon turns to those sides who face more testing fixtures over the next six Gameweeks. Jurgen Klopp may have got off to a solid start with a goalless draw at Tottenham, but his side face further stiff challenges over the coming weeks, while on the back of that 6-2 battering at Newcastle, Norwich also have to contend with a tricky schedule over the next month or so.

LIVERPOOL

frisking

The big positive from Klopp’s first match in charge was the fact his side managed to keep a clean sheet at White Hart Lane. While they only face one team (Man City) who feature in the top seven teams for total goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, upcoming opponents Southampton, Chelsea and Newcastle have all in good goal scoring form in the last few fixtures. The Crystal Palace and Swansea clashes do, however, offer hope of defensive returns, with both sides struggling in front of goal. Although Alberto Moreno (4.7) holds some appeal because of his attacking threat from left-back and bargain price tag, investment in any other members of the Reds’ backline appears unlikely at this point.

The outlook for the attacking prospects is slightly brighter, with only the trip to the Etihad standing out as a really difficult fixture. Southampton, Palace and Chelsea all feature around halfway up the table for shots conceded inside the box in the last four Gameweeks, and aren’t likely to prove particularly kind match-ups for the likes of Philippe Coutinho (8.1). It’s only come Gameweek 14 where the prospects of Liverpool’s attacking assets start to brighten, with Swansea vulnerable on their travels so far, while Newcastle have only kept one clean sheet this term.

NORWICH

frisking

With the Canaries facing Man City and Arsenal, the two highest scoring teams over the last four Gameweeks, it’s hard not to fear the worse after a calamitous display at St James’ Park. Alex Neil’s side are still searching for their first clean sheet of the season, and while West Brom and Swansea both feature in the bottom six teams for shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, their prospects for defensive returns look bleak. A trip to Stamford Bridge also appears very unlikely to yield defensive returns, with the champions having scored in all their five home matches so far, although a visit to Watford, who have failed to score in four of their five encounters at Vicarage Road, does offer a ray of hope for those who still own John Ruddy (4.5) or Russell Martin (4.7).

Chelsea, Arsenal, City and West Brom all feature in the bottom six for shots conceded in their own penalty area over the last four Gameweeks, so while Norwich have enjoyed plenty of success going forward so far this season, scoring 14 goals, they may find the going tougher over the coming period. Even Swansea and Watford have only conceded six goals apiece in their last four matches, so while Dieumerci Mbokani has scored in his last two outings, and offers good value at 5.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), now does not appear to be the time to invest in Canaries attacking assets.

ASTON VILLA

frisking

The Villans have only taken one point from their last eight matches, and with confidence low at Villa Park, the next six fixtures only add to the notion that their Fantasy assets should be left alone at this point. In terms of attacking prospects, the match-ups against Tottenham and City are very difficult, with Spurs conceding just three goals in their last four matches, while Vincent Kompany should be back in action by the Gameweek 12 clash. Villa have scored twice at both Leicester and Liverpool, so their counter-attacking threat may flourish at Everton and Southampton, although neither are particularly weak backlines. The Swansea and Watford fixtures, given both teams feature in the top six for shots conceded from inside their own penalty area over the last four Gameweeks, could be reasonable match-ups, but Tim Sherwood’s side have failed to score in three of their four home matches so far.

At the back, there’s little reason for optimism either, given that Villa have failed to keep a clean sheet since Gameweek 1. With City, Southampton, Tottenham and Everton all among the top eight teams for shots from inside the box in the last four Gameweeks, any defensive returns in those four matches appear unlikely. Even the Watford fixture may not be so straightforward, with the Hornets having scored in three of their four away fixtures so far. It’s only Swansea, who have lost their way in an attacking sense, that may perhaps yield some defensive points for those that are still clinging on to the likes of Micah Richards (4.6).

BE WARY OF…

West Ham
While the Hammers are riding high in fourth place, they do face a testing period over the next month or so (CHE, wat, EVE, tot, WBA, mun). In saying that, West Ham have scored at least twice in all but one of Slaven Bilic’s matches in charges and, having chalked up wins away to Arsenal, Liverpool and City, our faith in their attack remains resolute. Dimitri Payet (8.1) has been pretty fixture proof so far, picking up assists at both Arsenal and City, though the likes of Diafra Sakho and Manuel Lanzini may struggle to convince as differentials.

At the back, Bilic’s men have conceded six goals in their last four matches, and while Chelsea, Man United, Everton and Tottenham don’t feature in the top six teams for shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, it’s hard to see Hammers defensive assets accruing too many points from those fixtures. The Watford and West Brom clashes could bring in defensive points, but Aaron Cresswell (5.6), for example, appears unlikely to deliver great value for his 10% ownership over the coming period.

West Brom
The Baggies are the second lowest scorers so far this season with seven goals, and their next six fixtures (nor, LEI, mun, ARS, whm, TOT) suggest that record isn’t going to improve drastically over the next few weeks. Arguably, outside of Saido Berahino (6.2), no West Brom attacker looks worthy of consideration anyway.

It’s at the back where Fantasy managers have been keen to invest in West Brom assets, but with five of their upcoming opponents among the top eight teams for total goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, we could see some regression in the Baggies backline, which has kept five clean sheets so far. Belief in Tony Pulis may mean many are happy to stick with the likes of Boaz Myhill (4.7) and Craig Dawson (5.1), but for those who have gone without West Brom defensive coverage, now doesn’t appear to be the time to invest.

Bournemouth
With injuries taking hold at the south coast club, and a pretty tricky run of fixtures (TOT, sot, NEW, swa, EVE, che) on the horizon, there are few positives to owning any of the Cherries’ Fantasy assets right now. They have managed to score in all of their last seven matches, and while Glenn Murray (5.6) has netted in his last two appearances, there are certainly stronger budget options available to FPL bosses. Likewise, with so many budget midfield options to choose from, Matt Ritchie (5.7) doesn’t appear worth owning.

Defensively, the outlook is arguably even gloomier, with Tottenham, Southampton and Chelsea all expected to score against Eddie Howe’s men, while Everton, Swansea and Newcastle, based on Sunday’s evidence, will all fancy their chances against the Cherries. While the price tag and attacking potential of Simon Francis (4.5) means the right-back offers solid value, even he may struggle for points over the next six Gameweeks.

Was Ranieri asked about Mahrez's continued omission from the first 11? I don't see any quotes about this but would think its a fairly obvious question...

    Anyone playing EL Fantasy?

    Any thoughts on this team?

    Novota (Boyko)

    Caicarra, Suchy, Hoffman (Douglas, Rajtoral)
Pokorny, Mertens , Bjarnasson (C), Mak (Samedov)
    Huntelaar, Callejon, Altinop

2 things I'm not sure on : Captain and whether to play Samedov (Mosva home against Besiktas) instead of someone else.

David vs Goliath - Is this the year of the underdog so far?

Over the last few weeks many have stated that this has, so far, been the year of the “casual”/”underdog” player. I wanted to see if this was true, and if so, look at some of the potential reasons. I also wanted to see if I had a realistic chance myself of chasing down the top 50.

To do this, I took the current top 50 in the hall of fame rankings (Jonty just made the cut). I will refer to these players as our “pros”. I then compared various stats with our current top 50 in the overall rankings. I will be referring to these players as “casuals”

First, let’s see whether these classifications are appropriate. For this I used two metrics 1) FPL experience and 2) Average historical ranking. Our “pros” had, on average 8.52 years of experience playing FPL and with an average ranking of 31,089. In comparison, our “casuals” had only 4.2 years’ experience and an average historical ranking of 754,544 per season. Such a gulf in both metrics justifies these classifications (without offending anyone).

Next, I looked into differences in points and position this season. The pros ranged from 412 points (961,501st) to 525 points (5,878th) with an average of 477.86 (~94,000th). The casuals ranged from 632 points (unsurprisingly 1st) to 584 points (joint 48th). So even the best pro was still 59 points off of the top 50 and their average scores were 106 points behind. So at this stage of the season, our pros don’t seem to be living up to their top billing. But why?

One big factor in this year’s game is the introduction of chips. One possible reason for the gulf in points is that the casuals have played more chips and therefore their current ranks are “artificial”. I decided to look into the data to see if this held true.

Turns out, that our pros have used an average of 1.34 chips over the first 9 game weeks. This is considerably lower than the 1.74 chips used by the casuals. This is good news for the pros, and the rest of us, going forward as we try to close the gap. However, given the size of the points gap, can we really expect one or two chips to close that? Of more concern is that the average for the current top 10 is 1 chip and 3 of the top 10 haven’t even used a chip yet! Even more impressive yet, 2 of them haven’t taken a hit yet (tips hat begrudgingly). Unsurprisingly, the lack of chips played by the pros has been somewhat offset by a greater number of hits taken by our pros. The pros have taken an average of 2.64 hits in a desperate attempt to claw themselves back in contention. In contrast, the casuals average 1.08 hits per person.

Frustrated, I thought that maybe the pros and I can find some promise in which chips had actually been played, and that maybe we still held onto the more powerful of the french fries.

    *AOA Chip*
Arguably the least powerful chip, this chip had been used by 40% of the pros with half of those played in week 9). Yet only 28% of the casuals had played it with about a third playing it in week 3.

    *Bench Boost*
This chip hasn’t been used by a single pro and yet 40% of the casuals have played it (including #1). Given that this chip can be used most effectively in a double-gameweek, maybe this is an area where the pros and I can press home the advantage. The only problem here is that potential double-gameweek opportunities are months away and the casual could be over the horizon by then!

    *Triple captain*
A powerful chip that should surely be wielded during a double-gameweek (hopefully Aguero can stay fit). As expected, the pros have kept hold of this cherished asset with only one player playing it. It has been often hypothesised that the casuals are only in the top 50 because they have played this powerful chip during gameweek 8. The data shows that 46% of casuals have played the chip, yet only a third of those played were played in gameweek 8. This all sounds promising for the pros, until you realise that none of the top 10 players have played it yet......blast. Moving on.

    *Wildcard*
Arguably the strongest chip, and the only one I have played myself, the first wildcard has been used by a whopping 92% of our pros!!! Clearly they do not want to get left behind at this early stage (although some have already). Half of those played, including my own, were played in gameweek 3 when many needed to rectify awful pre-season selections and stuttering bandwagons. Surprisingly, especially considering the low numbers of hits taken, only 60% of the casuals have used it! And, even worse, only 3 of the top 10 have wildcarded. Clearly their initial squad selections were on the money. I fear that the pros and I may fall behind further should the remaining casuals utilise their WC for the gameweek 11 fixture swing, or even the manic Christmas schedule. Grumble grumble.

So, in summary, it doesn’t seem that so far this season has been dominated by the casuals. The pros are some way off the pace but have the advantage of their triple captain and bench boost chips to play in future double gameweeks. In contrast, the casuals have a 100 point lead and many still have their first wildcard at their disposal. Surely they will be looking to press home their advantage from gameweek 11. Maybe it’s the pros who are David after all! Let’s hope all we need is a well-aimed triple captain rock to slay casual Goliaths.

All that said, there is still a long way to go in the season and our pros are pros for a reason and I’m sure many of them will be in the top 10k come May. Hopefully I can join them there too! Anyway, I hope you found this useful or at least interesting. If not, I would love to hear why. It’s my first real analysis post and it would be good to know how I could improve it.

Sorry if I'm being negative or am missing something, but is this not just essentially saying "the top 50 in the world are doing better than everyone else so far"? As in, they aren't a metric for the average player - they are obviously doing better than the top 50 HOFers. That would be the same every season surely?

Yes, but my point is you can't use the current top 50 to show that casuals are doing better. You could say the top 50 are casuals, but that doesn't mean that casuals GENERALLY are doing well. Just as you couldn't take the bottom 1,000, see their past ranks, and say that that shows the casuals are doing worse.

These are very valid points Doolittle. To be statistically robust I should have taken a randomized subset. However, we are ultimately more interested in chasing the top players and how we can do it. That was my angle.

Exactly, as I said below, I think it was just the David vs Goliath idea that distracted me initially from some excellent analysis, and the angle that you were actually taking.

Ok, re-read it and I'm being a bit harsh, there is some interesting stuff about the use of chips, and I understand that part of it was to do with whether you could catch the top 50. However, to get a real idea of "casuals vs pros", surely you can't take a sample directly from current rankings? It would have to be people from the HOF, and random others with historically average ranks.

      3. The_Colonel
        • 12 Years

No need to be sorry. It is a good point. I'm sure it has been the same in previous years but the addition of the chips gives it another dimension imo. I like many, thought that the top50 are only there because they have played their chips. However, this simply isn't the case.
I plan to redo the analysis at the half way stage to see what has changed.

I think I was probably being too harsh, there's some very good analysis in there, it's just that the "casuals beating the pros" idea doesn't really fit the post. Nice work though, much appreciated.

It could be the "casuals" just got their initial selections spot on, so they don't feel the need to make transfers and don't feel the need to take many hits. And with an average of 4.2 years it doesn't sound like there are a lot of novices in there.

I think the wildcard was played too early by myself and others. I think last week was the best time to use it. I took a 20 point hit last week and now an 8 point hit this week. Now I'm relatively happy with my team and no knee-jerking has been done.

Superb post Colonel, as opposed to hall of famers who are good at finishing in the top 1k, I think it would be interesting to see the performance behaviour of people who have come close to winning the competition, i.e. finished previously in the top 20 (or are currently in the top 20). I'm interested in the behaviour of risk takers like Jinswick.

12/13 FPL winner Matt Martyniak is number 10 in the latest hall of fame. Jinswik is also in the top ten and Evs who finished 5th is among the latest top 50 in the hall of fame too. Quite a few former top 20 finishers in there.

Nice post. It makes sense that more of the Top 50 (casuals) haven't used their wildcards - they haven't needed to because their initial selections have worked, evidenced by their place in the top 50.

Or it could mean that they are in the top50 as they played it well and at the right time (in reality it is a combination of both). It is a concern for those of us chasing them though!

Many successful FPL players had one or more poor seasons before they started taking it more seriously.

In other words, they started as casuals but turned themselves into pros.

In my opinion this season is no different to any other. Jump on the form players.

Was sitting on 45 points after two weeks with a rank of 3.1m. Wildcarded week 3 and now up to 25k

Just did the obvious thing of jumping on Mahrez, Payet, KDB, Man City defence etc just like we all jumped on Ramsey/Yaya/Kane in previous seasons.

You see that Vardy has scored for 3 games running so you bring him in. The "casuals" are not lucky for that insight. It's been pretty much the same players bringing home the points first 9 weeks.

I think the chips have had a big initial effect.

Many of the very early leaders appeared to be Man City supporters who Triple Captained Yaya or Kompany in GW1. They would also have started with a third Man City player who was not Aguero, and therefore avoided all our Aguero captaincy fails.

Most of these have already fallen back. Those who are now in the top ten without using their Triple Captain or Bench Boost chips however probably had that bit of luck that we all need in getting their initial selections right, but they then followed this up with some good play and cashed in on the big hauls from Sanchez in GW7 and Aguero in GW8 just like the pros. And finding themselves in the top ten, they are probably now taking the game more seriously than before. They may not have had much success in previous seasons, and very few of them are likely to still be in the top ten come the end of this season, but I think it would be a mistake to say that they are all casuals. Some of them may even be in FFS before the season ends!

      what's the full draft

I quite like my team but I'm playing mine next week. I'll basically be changing my entire defence bar Bellerin and my strikers if I don't get Vardy this week.

      I want in

DDG, Coleman. KDB, Lukaku + a Newcastle attacker and I want rid of

      Francis, Huth, Prodl, Westwood

        Koscielny - Kolarov - Dawson - Francis - Prodl

        Sanchez - KdB - Payet - Cabaye - Mahrez

        Pelle - Vardy - Ighalo

Only ones I would change are the two Watford boys, Pelle and Dawson...

          Not worth a wc

maybe save this week and next week

Pelle, Ighalo and Dawson to Lukaku, Ayoze and Cedric for -4

Not sure I'd want rid of Pelle with his fixtures though. I am ditching on wc but I'm keeping Mane

Yup, Pelle has great fixtures, but Lukaku's aren't bad either, I probably won't sell Pelle for a hit, but if I was to WC, he'd be gone.

I agree, don't think it's worth me WCing just yet.. will reassess in a few weeks.

Francis, Prodl, Huth to Coleman, Ward and Moreno

              Westwood to KDB

Martial and Pelle to Lukaku and Ayoze

                  Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Mane, Mahrez

                  Lukaku, Vardy, Ayoze

so basically 3-5-2 but with Ayoze as a 3rd striker I'd be happy to play if needed and about 1.7 ITB as a Kun contingency fund
