634x258 Suspensions

Five players toppled off the Suspension Tightrope this Gameweek, as James Milner, Jeffrey Schlupp, Erik Pieters, Fernandinho and Jack Colback totted up their fifth cautions of the campaign and incurred a one-match ban.

Fortunately for the former quartet, they will serve out their suspensions in Capital One Cup clashes in midweek. Colback, on the other hand, misses Newcastle’s home tie against Stoke next Gameweek as the Magpies were knocked out in the previous round of the competition by Sheffield Wednesday. The midfielder was already a doubt for the Potters clash anyway, after he was forced off early in the second period due to a challenge from Lee Cattermole – early reports indicate he left the stadium on crutches.

In terms of other new suspensions, Fabricio Coloccini received a straight red for a foul on Steven Fletcher that led to the Black Cats’ penalty opener. Like Colback, he’ll be unavailable for selection when the Magpies welcome Stoke to St James’ Park, though reports this evening suggest that the Tyneside team are set to appeal the decision.

Post match, Magpies manager Steve McClaren clearly felt that whistler Bobby Madley made a match-changing error:

“It’s simple: he’s wrong in my opinion. Referees are part and parcel of the game and you control your performance – you can’t control the opponent or the referee and they can affect the result, and they have done today, not so much the opponent, but definitely the referee.”

McClaren’s opposite number, Sam Allardyce, also reckoned the dismissal was a little harsh on the Argentine:

“We’ve taken full of advantage of a piece of good fortune. I did think it’s a foul, personally. I’ve had a look at it. If he hadn’t made contact with him, I think Steven Fletcher would have scored. It was on his left foot, on his best side. It [the red card] is a bit harsh, but those are the rules and we’ve taken full advantage of that today. We had a harsh decision go against us last week, this week it went for us. I thought it was a penalty. The fortunate thing is the sending off”.

Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic and Everton veteran Gareth Barry were both given their marching orders for two bookable offences but also fulfil their obligations in midweek cup matches. Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is unconcerned over Barry’s midweek absence for a home clash with Norwich, claiming “he was going to be rested anyway”.

Sadio Mane was sent off in a farcical turn of events at Anfield, entering the referee’s notebook twice in stoppage time after bagging an equaliser in the 85th minute. Much to the relief of his 9% ownership, the Senegal international serves his time when Saints play host to Aston Villa in the League Cup, returning for a tasty home fixture against the Cherries.

Elsewhere on the Tightrope, Jonjo Shelvey edged one step closer to a brief spell on the sidelines, earning his fourth yellow of the season. Ciaran Clark, Eliaquim MangalaMatteo Darmian, Oriol Romeu, Billy Jones, Dele AlliMark Noble, Erik Lamela and Claudio Yacob make up the numbers in a ten-strong band of miscreants.

Dwight Gayle completed his one-match ban and returns to Crystal Palace’s squad for their home encounter against Manchester United next Gameweek. With Connor Wickham still uncertain to recover in time from a calf complaint, the 5.1-priced marksman is likely to lead the line ahead of Fraizer Campbell and Patrick Bamford.

As always, mainly thanks to our resident Tightrope expert Anorak, who has been keeping us up-to-date via his twitter stream.

For people wanting to know why I dislike Ross Barkley a lot (Ox and Wilshere too but to lesser extents), this is a good article:

Think the last paragraph is the key here. He's only 21 and has a lot to learn and grow. This season he's been playing well for both club and country when compared to previous seasons which is a clear indicator that he is progressing in the right direction. If he keeps at it he can become a very good #10. What people fault him is for the mistakes he makes. He might get 1 out of 5 key passes through or a lucky deflected goal. Whats important is that he keeps trying and soon he will click and those passes and shots will find their target. Again, this season he has been a helluva lot more accurate than previous ones.

You can't compare him to Ozil, Fabregas, or Mata in terms of chances created because he is of not that level yet. You can compare him to players of his age and level such as JWP or any of the other young #10s out there.

We cant say what he is going to be like in the future either because well we dont know. He could flatter to deceive similar to HBA or Taarabt or he could turn out to be something great. Just like how you can make a youtube compilation of any player to make them look great, you can also nitpick any player to make them look like they arent good at football.

He has been playing a bit better this season you're right but he's going to need a lot of game time to *maybe* reach that level and a club the size of Everton shouldn't really be sinking so much into Barkley. Send him out on loan to Germany or another club but he's not yet at least the number 10 I'd want in the premiership.

A key indicator for me is he loses about 40% of his dribbles which is far too high for somebody who dribbles so much. I really think the image sequence in that article sum him up.

        Some stats for this season

Shots: 30 - 3rd in the league for midfielders
SoT: 11 - 3rd equal in the league for midfielders

He's also created 17 chances. More than Sterling, Mane and Cabaye

He's only 6.8m and his tough run of fixtures is over and a strong run is about to begin

stats to back up my point

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 3 months ago

and of those 30 shots, 8 in the box and of the 11 on target only 4 in the box. To me he's very much a dribble, dribble, dribble, reach the centre backs, shoot from range or lose the ball there's not the creativity there.

Similarly of those chances created only 3 have been big chances created which is very middle of the road fro an attacking midfielder.

And SoT are a very reliable stat. It shows why he's done quite well so far this season and now the fixtures get easier. He's ready to go up another level this season.

Can anyone shed some light on Darmian?

Hauled off at half time against Arsenal, plays 90 against Everton, 10 minute cameo this week.

I thought that LVG took him off against Arsenal because he was on a yellow and they needed to mount a comeback.

United have nice fixtures and Darmian was meant to be ever-present in the defence for me but not so sure now. Are Rojo or Jones more nailed on?

Smalling the only defender that is nailed on

Rojo and Darmien should play most games but I wouldn't have Darmien when there so many better defensive options for cheaper

Jones will get injured midweek at training

And any suggestion on who to get rid would be appreciated

        Yikes.

Koscielny is fine and Richards could be with a new manager about to arrive. If Valencia is out for a few weeks then Darmian is fine aswell. Then deal with Sagna and bench Muniesa until you get an opportunity to get rid of him?

Cheers. Just getting frustrated by the price drops of the likes of muniesa richards and darmian pretty soon.

And a lot of of good defenders around the price range like toby moreno van djk making me impatient

Got a lot of benching thinking to have this week.

      Butland (new)
Bellerin (swa) Dawson (LEI) Kompany (NOR) Alderweireld (AVL)
Wijnaldum (STK) De Bruyne (NOR) Payet (wat) Sanchez (swa)
      Vardy (wba) Pelle (BOU)

Ruddy (mci) Gomis (ARS) Mahrez (wba) Richards (tot)

      1) Bench Mahrez, play Payet
      2) Bench Payet, play Mahrez
      3) Play both, bench one of Dawson / Bellerin
      4) Gomis > Lukaku (FT) and need to bench 2 of Payet, Mahrez, Bellerin, Dawson

      Thoughts??
