Harry Kane makes it four goals in two appearances with a late strike against Villa. Mousa Dembele and Jordan Ayew both net for the second time in as many league outings as Spurs move into fifth position, just one point off the top four.

Kane in the Goals Again

Harry Kane netted his fourth goal in two starts to cap off Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 home win over Aston Villa, thus extending their unbeaten streak to 10 matches. The England international left it late at White Hart Lane – rifling into the top corner three minutes into stoppage time – having been relatively starved of scoring opportunities (two attempts) before then. Prospective investors in the 9.3-priced forward might be deterred by the difficulty of Spurs’ upcoming trio of fixtures (ars, WHU, CHE), but it’s worth noting that Kane bagged a combined five goals in his previous match-ups with Arsenal and Chelsea.

Mousa Dembele came through on our Differential shout, claiming his second goal in as many outings. Notwithstanding his attractive price tag (5.3), the Belgian’s Fantasy potential is somewhat diminished by the fact that he’s only made it past the 70-minute mark on three occasions due to Mauricio Pochettino’s tendency to freshen things up late on in matches. Elsewhere among their mid-priced midfielders, Erik Lamela (6.8) earned his third assist of the campaign, rendering him one to watch when Spurs’ schedule clears up beyond Gameweek 14 – the Argentine has now delivered two goals and three assists in the last seven outings.

Delle Alli netted the hosts’ second of the night, boosting his output to two goals and as many assists for the season. Although Pochettino might opt to rotate the 19-year-old when Nabil Bentaleb returns from the treatment room – given that he’s enjoying his first year in the Premier League – Alli’s 4.9 valuation minimises the risk of recruiting the promising fifth midfielder.

Danny Rose highlighted his attacking instincts with back-to-back assists. Since the 5.2-priced left-back reclaimed his starting berth in Gameweek 9, only Alberto Moreno (six) has notched more shots (five) among all defenders. Those eyeing up Rose will have to await news on his health, as he was replaced at the 82-minute mark due to injury.

Ayew Strike Mere Consolation for Villa

On for the injured Ashley Westwood, Jordan Ayew chalked up his second goal in consecutive Gameweeks and looked lively throughout his 53-minute stint, surely convincing new manager Remi Garde to afford him a run of starts.

Garde clearly has a daunting task on his hands, given that Villa have now lost seven on the bounce and picked up a single point since the season opener at Bournemouth. Moreover, the West Midlanders also became just the third outfit to lose nine of their first 11 match-ups. From a Fantasy perspective, it will be interesting to observe whether the likes of Scott Sinclair (4.7) and Rudy Gestede (5.8) re-emerge as viable budget pick-ups under the Frenchman’s reign, though with numerous options available, it looks very wise to steer clear until we see signs of improvement. Given that Villa now face City, Everton, Watford, Southampton and Arsenal in the next five, Garde looks set for a testing opening period at the helm.

Went to see my beloved Liverpool on the weekend, it was brilliant. Although it was the ultimate test of self restraint sitting and watching from my seat in the West Stand. Incredibly hard not to jump about when Coutinho's goals went in.

When taking a hit the big question always is can the player you’re bringing in make up the 4 points you’ve lost by making the transfer.

When making a free transfer do you value it at the same level or less given that you’re not losing any points.

Simply how many points is a FT worth?

    1. Numb
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

A FT is generally worth 4 points as well, unless you have 2 FTs already and its a case of "use it or lose it"

I'll look at both options long term usually, 4 point hit or not.

A free transfer is worth 4 points maybe, considering that's how much they cost?

I'm pretty sure that Dufflinks (last years winner) said that he tries to view each transfer as if it was for a hit, to prevent him for making kneejerk decisions. By that logic, a FT is worth -4 too.

Assuming no midweek injuries, which of these would you go for?

    A) Save transfer and reassess over the international break.

    B) Bony -> Vardy. Accept that losing Vardy last week was an error and just get him back. He is bang on form, with great stats and 2 decent fixtures. Reconsider switching him out from GW14 onwards if needed.

    C) Bony -> Giroud. On form and at home in a usually high scoring NLD. Slight concern over gametime looms once Wally is back though.

    DDG
    Kolarov, Bellerin, Moreno
    Sanchez, KDB, Mane, Mahrez
    Lukaku, Pelle, Bony

      Full article here - http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2015/10/16/9549555/whats-gone-wrong-and-how-to-fix-it

Time to take on the topical debate in a straightforward, no nonsense, Jefferson Montero way.

As we mentioned above, Branislav Ivanović is the all-around wing back on the right side in Chelsea's set up. His aerial dominance makes him a weapon on both attacking and defensive set pieces (for his heading more than his grappling talents though) as well as in open play, when Courtois/Begović knock it long or when the opponents decide to switch play.

With Willian vacating the right flank to play the ball in central areas as a 3rd central midfielder, that also leaves the right side very exposed in transition. In case the opponent has time and space to pick up a pass in Ivanović's wing, Chelsea used to deal with those situations with either Willian doing another superhuman sprint to cut the pass off, or at times Cesc Fàbregas helping Ivanović and Willian to box the opposition's winger (and his overlapping full back).

Defence is about defensive overload before thinking about getting stuck in a challenge. Only when the closing down/cover support shape is set around the holder of the ball can a defender be proactive and try to win the ball back. Mourinho, like many other managers nowadays, doesn't encourage centre backs to vacate space centrally to support full backs. It's the central midfielders' job to help the full back to deal with wingers.

This, is not happening right now at Chelsea. Cesc Fàbregas is nowhere to be seen to cover the inside of the field when Ivanović is isolated against Montero, Bolasie, Naismith or Brahimi.

Let's also settle on something that many people tend not to take into account. Full backs should never defend 1v1 against elite wingers. Elite wingers are elite wingers because they can succeed more often than not at beating their man. A full back losing a "1v1" (the very restricted portion of space and time which can be regarded as a 1v1) happens all the time, but with proper cover support and midfielders properly cutting off passing lanes, the winger is generally doomed to give the ball away shortly after.

The situation that is very wrong with Ivanović right now is that he has to deal with elite wingers on his own and has no support whatsoever around him. He is the last one to blame, for failing to repeatedly accomplish the feat of winning the ball back when backpedalling against a Premier League winger who had space to gather pace to take on him.

This probably explains why a two-time Champions League and 8 times League winning manager has maintained his trust in him despite worldwide Twitter backlash.

Thoughts on this UCL fantasy team:

      Cesar, Domenech
      Alba Eliseu Gimenez Layun Mustafi
Fortounis Gaitan Roberto Texeira Thiago A
      Aboubakar Griezmann Neymar?

I think i can save at least Griezmann doesn't start
      Texeira©?

Gimenez might not start. Wait for the lineups in two hours.
