Eden Hazard is named amongst the subs as Willian fires Chelsea to victory against Dynamo Kiev. Arsenal are hammered in Munich as their injury worries ramp up at the back, Son Heung-Min returns to contention for Tottenham, whilst Daryl Janmaat is expected to be available for Newcastle’s trip to Bournemouth.

Willian Wins it for Blues

Chelsea sneaked a 2-1 home win over Dynamo Kiev courtesy of an own goal and a sublime free-kick from Willian in the 83rd minute. Jose Mourinho opted to bench Eden Hazard, fielding Oscar (left), Cesc Fabregas (number ten) and Willian (right) in behind Diego Costa. Pedro made a return to the subs bench and was called into action at the 79-minute mark, but Branislav Ivanovic didn’t make the matchday squad.

The Scout Says: Willian has undoubtedly been the Blues’ most consistent performer on the attacking front and now boasts four goals and three assists across all competitions. As such, the tireless Brazilian seems certain to retain his starting berth when Chelsea lock horns with Stoke at the Britannia Stadium, though there are question marks over who will fill the other two slots behind Costa going forward. Certainly, given that Mourinho felt compelled to demote Hazard for their crucial Champions League clash against the Ukrainian giants, it would be no surprise to see the 11.0-priced midfielder benched for the second league match in four Gameweeks. With showdowns against Norwich, Spurs, Bournemouth, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford following on from their Britannia clash, Willian – at just 6.8 in FPL – is looking a real differential punt, with a mere 3% ownership.

Defensive Concerns for Gunners

Arsenal were comprehensively outclassed by Bayern Munich as they fell to a 5-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena. Assisted by Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud netted a consolation goal in the 68th minute to starve the hosts of a shut-out. Mathieu Debuchy and Gabriel filled in for Hector Bellerin and Laurent Koscielny, though the latter was fit enough for the bench after sustaining a minor hip problem. Whilst Koscielny is expected to be passed fit for Sunday’s clash with Spurs, Arsene Wenger is far less optimistic on the young Spaniard’s prospects:

“I don’t think Bellerin will be available for Sunday but there is a small chance. From tonight we don’t have any new injuries.”

The Scout Says: Notwithstanding his limited starts this term, Giroud has amassed eight goals for the Gunners in just 869 minutes of pitch time in all competitions. The surfeit of strong options among the full roster of mid-priced forwards has somewhat overshadowed the fact that the 8.7-priced Frenchman has blanked just twice in seven outings (two starts) and faces match-ups against West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, Sunderland and Aston Villa in the next four Gameweeks. Whilst his injury doesn’t look a long-term worry, Bellerin’s likely absence this weekend is a real blow for his 22% owners after he rose to second in the defender standings on the back of an assist and three clean sheets in the last four. Given that replacement Mathieu Debuchy had a torrid time against Danny Rose in the Gunners’ recent League Cup victory over Spurs, those Fantasy managers who’ve recruited the likes of Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen will feel a little more positive as Spurs look to breach a backline that’s conceded just once in their last four home matches at the Etihad.

Pochettino Handed Son Boost

Son Heung-Min has recovered from a foot injury and is available for selection when Tottenham Hotspur host Anderlecht on Thursday night – although Mauricio Pochettino is yet to decide whether he starts the South Korean winger. Elsewhere in the Lilywhites camp, Danny Rose is touch-and-go for the Europa League clash due to a dead leg but is expected to make the North London derby, while Nabil Bentaleb returned to training but is short of match fitness:

“Sonny is in the squad and in contention. We now have to decide if he plays from the beginning or if it’s better to put him on the bench. Nabil is training well but he’s not match fit yet. Danny is better, it was a dead leg but it’s not a big issue, he still has a chance, but we have a strong squad and if he isn’t 100% maybe we’ll wait until the next game.”

The Scout Says: Considering that Mousa Dembele has scored in back-to-back matches and Erik Lamela notched a goal and an assist in his previous two starts, Son faces a tough task to immediately reclaim his starting berth. Nonetheless, the 7.9-priced forward has three goals in five appearances in all competitions and furnishes Spurs’ attack with pace it otherwise doesn’t possess, providing Pochettino with food for thought. Although Delle Alli has been hugely impressive since his switch from League One outfit MK Dons in the summer, Bentaleb could earn a share of starts alongside Eric Dier, thus lightening the load on the 19-year-old and averting the risk of burn-out. Pochettino could also utilise Dembele in a deep-lying role too, if he chooses to hand Son a quick return to the first XI.

Magpies Optimistic on Janmaat

Newcastle coach Paul Simpson revealed that Daryl Janmaat trained on Tuesday and could be passed for the Magpies’ trip to Bournemouth, having been forced off late against Stoke City with a knee complaint:

“We are hopeful that Daryl is available for the weekend. He just jarred his knee. He has trained on Tuesday but sat out of Monday, which was only a light session anyway.”

The Scout Says: Over the last four Gameweeks, Janmaat managed just a single attempt on goal, marking a significant downturn in his goal threat of late. That being said, he’s displayed strong assist-potential over that stretch, with only three defenders racking up more key passes (six). Janmaat’s 3% ownership will be encouraged by the fact that Newcastle held the Potters to a 0-0 stalemate last time out and now embark on a decent trio of match-ups (bou, LEI, cry). The Cherries encounter looks particularly promising, given that no side has crafted fewer big chances (two) since Gameweek 8.

De Bruyne / Mahrez / Sanchez / Payet / Mané

    Lukaku / Vardy / Ighalo

I'm thinking of benching Sanchez - only one playing a strong defence.

Anyone backing Sanchez for captaincy this week?

He seems to have fared well against tight defenses recently (2 goals against United, 1 against Watford), Arsenal have scored 3,2,3,3 & 5 goals in their last 5 games, clearly they have goals in them.

Or, is the demoralising CL result and Spurs tight defence putting everyone off?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Double or quits

On this week’s Scoutcast Granville asked an interesting question, which of Riyad Mahrez or Jamie Vardy would we ditch? Our answer was a swift “neither” as both are continuing to perform. But one day this season if both remain fit and even better options emerge we may be forced to answer that question more decisively.

This got me thinking about our current Scout Picks squad and this week’s fixtures. There are few teams with excellent attacks against poor defence,s which makes doubling up in attack potentially fruitful in Gameweek 12. There will be other Gameweeks like that too.

So in terms of some of the game’s key double ups. Who do you think are worthy of two slots in our teams and why? Who would you ignore or dump and why?

Here’s a selection with my thoughts – feel free to add more and tell me your key double or quit options.

Mahrez and Vardy – the classic combination of the moment. For me both deserve places

Sanchez and Ozil – On current form Ozil wins, plus frees up vital cash to get Aguero back in after the international break (estimated return GWK 13 or 14). Ditchin Sanchez is a risk but is he a viable captaincy candidate currently?

KDB and Sterling/Bony – given Man City are the only top attack to face a dire defence this Gameweek (according to Sarjeant’s latest community article – see Community Articles tab) there is a real short term case for doubling up. When Aguero returns I think that case continues with Aguero and his likely assister KDB both deserving of places

Mane and Pelle - Of the two I think Pelle is ditchable due to a marked drop off in performance away from home. Mane’s performance away also drops but not as markedly. Also looking at how they performed in the second half against Bournemouth in Gameweek 11 Keoman’s tactics may more frequently be to protect a lead through defence rather than attack.

Only attacking potential or any double up?

I think for Scout Picks you can go with Smalling / Rooney Double Up...

I would drop Mahrez as I think Watford are good defensively and this match will not be a walk in the park.

I would consider DDG and Rojo or Rojo and Smalling a double up. Not really a defender and attacker. The way I look at it is that you are doubling up on a key aspect of play - goals or clean sheets.

I'm not going to answer this one directly as I think it basically validates the concept of coverage. Owning Sanchez doesn't make Ozil a better or worse pick, owning Pelle doesn't mean Mane gets fewer points for your team than he does for other people...

When considering transfers I try to judge each player on their own merits regardless of who I do or don't already own.

I disagree. There are certain of goals expected by team to score and there is goal involvement. Also there is certain pile of BP too, which is shared when you own double up

Yes in a single gw but if you think Ozil will score circa 6ppg over the next 6 fixtures due to a good run then it doesn't matter whether you have sanchez who you think will score 7 ppg over the same run. One is not dependent on the other and one does not negatively effect the others score over a run of fixtures.

        Well said that man!

The only real downside to double ups is when you could have four players with a real tough fixture at the same time whereas if you can have players from different teams you are more likely to be able to pick an 11 with a favourable fixture (not that I have managed to figure out what is favourable and what is unfavourable when it comes to fpl and football results)

Yaya + KdB has worked for me in the last 2 weeks, Mahrez + Vardy offer insane value at the moment.

Thinking of doubling up on Ozil + Sanchez, or I might double up at the back with Koscielny and Bellerin.

I think one of Mané or Pelle would suffice.

I can't argue with any of those. Spurs and Everton have some nice fixtures looming so I wouldn't rule out a possible Kane & Eriksen or Lukaku & Deulofeu combo at some point in the future.

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

By the time it comes to it I think one will show they are more droppable than the other at Leicester. I think it'll only take two or three blanks from Vardy for Okzaki or Ulloa to get a game to lead the line under the Tinkerman as is his nature.

At Arsenal I'd prefer the second player to have a bit more goal threat so if I was going to double I'd maybe go for Sanchez and Giroud in the short term over Ozil while Walcott is out.

CIty double up is, wait for it, pretty much essential all season.

Southampton's attack isn't on the same level as the other teams and I think doubling up is overkill. I've got one for now because the fixtures are good but whenever they turn I'll likely get shot of Mane pretty quickly.

My added contribution to the conversation is that I think DDG + Smalling or Rojo will do you wonders at the back.

I'd go Cathcart due to Nyom's 4 YCs.

Actually Ake is right now more secure than Nyom because last few matches Nyom has been subbed around 70mins for Anya...

yeah I saw Ake played 90mins last 4.

Cath and Nyom played every game

you reckon Ake will hold place or would you go Cathcart for safety?

If playing AOA, which two defenders to play?

    A- Cedric
    B- Kolarov
    C- Azpi
    D- Francis

I am having a benching dilemma

Sanchez Payet Mahrez Mane Yaya; Pelle Vardy Kane

Don't think that's an attack to go AOA with. I'd play Azpi and save it for a double GW.
Will bench Kane or Yaya (depends on Arsenal defense news)

When Aguero returns and I bring him vs Soton is it viable to keep two heavy hitters of Mancity (KDB + Aguero) or spread the risk?

Currently thinking of KDB to cheapie to aid Aguero funds...

    Play

    A)

    DDG
    Dann, Kolarov, VVD
    KDB, Mahrez, Payet, Sanchez
    Pelle, Vardy, Bony

    Myhill - Surman - Richards - Bellerin

    B)
    AOA

    Myhill
    Kolarov, VVD
    KDB, Mahrez, Payet, Sanchez, BARKLEY
    Pelle, Vardy, Bony

Butland- Dann - Richards - Bellerin
