We turn our attentions to the main captaincy contenders for the weekend now and roll out our regular pre-Gameweek members article. We take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Jamie Vardy (25%) is the most popular choice for the captain’s armband this Gameweek, having tallied an astonishing 10 goals in his last eight outings. Considering that Leicester City have scored in every match this term, the Foxes’ irrepressible frontman won’t fear a Watford outfit that boasts back-to-back clean sheets ahead of their trip to the King Power Stadium. A brace for Riyad Mahrez against West Bromwich Albion earns him 17% of the vote and second place in our Captain Poll. The Algeria international has drawn just two blanks in nine appearances this term, underlining the consistency of his output.

Kevin De Bruyne scoops 14% of the vote ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Aston Villa this Sunday. The former Wolfsburg recruit lays claim to a superior points-per-game average (6.9) than any other Sky Blues midfielder, having bagged three goals and four assists in six matches. The 4% of voters that plumped for his team-mate, Wilfred Bony, will be encouraged by the Ivorian’s finish in midweek and the fact that the Villains last claimed a shut-out in Gameweek 1.

Looking beyond the top three, Graziano Pelle attracted an 8% backing as Southampton prepare to square off against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The Italian marksman has chalked up four goals and as many assists in his previous six starts, while the Black Cats are still recovering from their 6-2 drubbing at Goodison on Sunday.

Despite the tough nature of Arsenal’s home clash against Tottenham Hotspur, the fixture-proof Alexis Sanchez enjoys 7% of the vote. The sprightly Chilean carded blanks in the last two Gameweeks but has showcased his capacity for explosive returns with two 15+-point hauls.

Outside the top five, Georginio Wijnaldum and Romelu Lukaku (both 3%) have emerged as popular differential picks. The former ranks second among midfielders – behind Mahrez (seven) – for goals scored this season, with his four-goal haul at home to Norwich City the obvious highlight. The latter, meanwhile, is the sixth highest points scorer (66) in the Fantasy Premier League, with six goals and four assists accrued.

Four consecutive blanks hasn’t deterred 2% of voters from investing faith in Anthony Martial when Manchester United play host to West Brom, who’ve only conceded in one of five road fixtures. Also coming in at 2%, Christian Benteke netted in three of his previous four league outings so should have an air of confidence about him when Crystal Palace roll up to Anfield.

Maybe, but it didn't work out last week. Kind of think that Allardyce will have had the team doing nothing but defensive work all week as well.

      Remember last week vs Bournemouth?
SOU had a 2-0 lead at HT, and completely put on the breaks in the second half.
Mane could have run rampant, but Koeman said NOPE.

I've 3x SOU atm, but none are getting the armband

This is the rest of my team, with two FTs:

    Mané / KDB / Payet / Sanchez / Mahrez
    Pelllè / Lukaku / Vardy

For the same reason people tend to think the Ars/Spurs NLD has goals in them.

With all the good fixtures that your team has this week it would be a dreadful decision if you captained him away at Arsenal. Even if it was Messi or Ronaldo leading the line for Spurs I still wouldn't captain them.

Arsenal kept out the best team in the world at home a few weeks ago. Captaining a Spurs player this week is something I wouldn't even consider.

Bellerin is out, and Koscielny is also a doubt though.

But I think if Ronaldo was in the PL you would captain him every week regardless of the opposition.

TBH, the more people ask questions about who to bench the more I feel better owning someone like Westwood.

It's a headache I dont need every week specially when you get it wrong.

I don't think it's such a problem owning eight good attacking players. Of course you're going to get the benching decision wrong sometimes, but on the other hand it means you own him already for the next week.

Yes, but arguably points on the bench are slightly better than not having the player at all. If you have the opportunity, you acquire the strongest squad possible, surely?

Nope. I've got Ighalo and Barkley vying for that one spot. I'll get it wrong from time to time (like last week), but at least I own Ighalo (bought at 5.1) and he's now an option for this week and I think I'll play him instead of Barkley. Nice to have the option I think

    Bench boost

Ok I'm considering playing this week , I know this goes against perceived thinking but is it really that bad ?

I have a great squad this week and not used transfer yet so my bench is:-
Payet , Janmaat , Saylor (to become Moreno)

This bench is about as strong as im going to get , I can't see me having a better one this year

I know the perceived wisdom is to save it for a double but I have triple captain chip for one of them and are we realistically going to have 15 dgws, more likely a few singles in there so bench boost is just going to be playing the singles , essentially the same as this GW

Could do with some thoughts on this , am I going mad ???

    Thanks

I agree that the bench boost shouldn't necessarily be played in a DGW, I can't see myself having 15 DGWers either. I think there's a decent case to be made for you playing it with that bench.

If you plan ahead your bench for the double can be doublers too, I guess is the logic of holding. Whether or not anyone is actually able to do that is another thing.

      Just do the math?

      7-8 DGW players + 7-8 SGW players = 21-22 games played.

SGW Bench Boost = 15 games played.

Certainly depends on form and fixtures, but I like the DGW.

Aha. It is simply a question of the strength of the bench in each case, and one would think it would be a comparison of SGW players in each case.

Cheers for the replies. Needless to say I am far from being qualified to use it at this time. Back to work.

Not necessarily about having 15 DGW players - but it means you could have 11 DGW players, and bench good SGW players, while still getting their points.

        This

Imagine Kun or Sanchez for example don't have a DGW.

You'll still want to keep them whilst getting in as many DGWers as possible. Bench boost seems perfect for this

I don't think anyone could have predicted he would go on such an incredible scoring run. As you say, very impressive (although he is helped by Leicester playing such an attacking style).

Well said Pulis! He wants to know where the huge money being taken in fines from managers ends up. As he says, "it's my money, not theirs and I have a right to know where it goes"

You would like to think it goes to charity but I somehow doubt it

Anyway.. How does Evans - > Moreno for free sound? And everything else in order?

    Bego
    Kompany Huth VvD
    Sanchez (VC) Mahrez KDB Mane
    Vardy (C) Kane Lukaku

    McCarthy Francis Evans Wanyama

    Thanks

Yeah, I'm going to do Dawson to either Moreno or Rojo. Can't decide between them, any thoughts? Tempted by Moreno because he is more attacking and cheaper, although Rojo is clearly in the better defensive unit.

I'm going Moreno as itll take me an extra transfer to get Aguero if i go someone more expensive. And looking at his stats he looks like great value right now. Should be slightly more nailed on. Also never underestimate MNF magic!
