We turn our attentions to the main captaincy contenders for the weekend now and roll out our regular pre-Gameweek members article. We take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Jamie Vardy (25%) is the most popular choice for the captain’s armband this Gameweek, having tallied an astonishing 10 goals in his last eight outings. Considering that Leicester City have scored in every match this term, the Foxes’ irrepressible frontman won’t fear a Watford outfit that boasts back-to-back clean sheets ahead of their trip to the King Power Stadium. A brace for Riyad Mahrez against West Bromwich Albion earns him 17% of the vote and second place in our Captain Poll. The Algeria international has drawn just two blanks in nine appearances this term, underlining the consistency of his output.

Kevin De Bruyne scoops 14% of the vote ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Aston Villa this Sunday. The former Wolfsburg recruit lays claim to a superior points-per-game average (6.9) than any other Sky Blues midfielder, having bagged three goals and four assists in six matches. The 4% of voters that plumped for his team-mate, Wilfred Bony, will be encouraged by the Ivorian’s finish in midweek and the fact that the Villains last claimed a shut-out in Gameweek 1.

Looking beyond the top three, Graziano Pelle attracted an 8% backing as Southampton prepare to square off against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The Italian marksman has chalked up four goals and as many assists in his previous six starts, while the Black Cats are still recovering from their 6-2 drubbing at Goodison on Sunday.

Despite the tough nature of Arsenal’s home clash against Tottenham Hotspur, the fixture-proof Alexis Sanchez enjoys 7% of the vote. The sprightly Chilean carded blanks in the last two Gameweeks but has showcased his capacity for explosive returns with two 15+-point hauls.

Outside the top five, Georginio Wijnaldum and Romelu Lukaku (both 3%) have emerged as popular differential picks. The former ranks second among midfielders – behind Mahrez (seven) – for goals scored this season, with his four-goal haul at home to Norwich City the obvious highlight. The latter, meanwhile, is the sixth highest points scorer (66) in the Fantasy Premier League, with six goals and four assists accrued.

Four consecutive blanks hasn’t deterred 2% of voters from investing faith in Anthony Martial when Manchester United play host to West Brom, who’ve only conceded in one of five road fixtures. Also coming in at 2%, Christian Benteke netted in three of his previous four league outings so should have an air of confidence about him when Crystal Palace roll up to Anfield.

I'm actually having this dispute with myself but probably under stranger circumstances. I'd go with Rojo though out of the two. I got Jones in last week and am actually considering getting Rojo instead of Moreno just to insure myself against the fact that Jones probably won't play. If he does its likely I'll have defensive points solely based on whether United keep a clean sheet. (3 United defenders).

    Which move?

    A) Darmian to Rojo
    B) Darmian to Moreno
    C) Martin to Moreno (then unable to switch directly to Aguero next week without hits)

If your attack is fairly template wouldn't this be a decent week to pick a differential captain?

Assuming that several of the main picks are already covered by owning them, then the downside is at least mitigated a bit by having their points covered, right?

If the popular ones are all 40-60% owned and then 10-20% captained, you won't fall far behind the pack as an owner but noncaptainer?

I just pick who I think will score the most unless the risk is too high later in the season

Right, but with this week being so difficult to pick, wondering if it is a good week for a risk.

Here is a thought on AOA chip that I haven't heard mentioned.
People are suggesting keeping it for occasion when you might only have two defenders. I have been thinking that this might not be wise. For this to happen you are then not choosing to play the 5th midfielder when they have good fixture. So possibly you are only going to get a two point return. Whereas plying it when you have good fixture for 5th mid then you are predicting a better return. Obviously you would be looking for this to coincide with a poor fixture for one of your defenders to get dropped

      • 11 Years

      Also add to this
In my past two seasons I have had one occasion when I only two defenders fit, outside of cancelled match weeks. This may be due to how I play my defence, in that I don't normally have rotation risks and normally have three strong players

captain...would you use aoa for team jock in my position this week and keep the tranny for aguero route back in next gw?
that or targett to rojo this week?

i may have to be a bench fodder team for scotland this week - having a 'mare

Tourney doesn't start till next week. Just do what suits your team best not for this tourney. I don't think having united defender is bad idea. At the moment I am not rushing to get aguero back, fixtures aren't amazing till he is back to full fitness

          ah! sorry mate.
will take a squint at those fixtures now too.

you make a good point on aoa. i nearly did last week but thought i'd keep hold *just in case*.... 1 benched Mahrez later however...

I think AOA is the weakest of the three chips tbh. I used mine recently when all my front players supposedly had decent fixtures. Didn't turn out that way!

Just can't get comfortable (C)ing Vardy for some reason.

Surely an attacking City at Villa is just as plum a fixture at WAT....meaning that KDB should be an option? Or are his goal stats just a bit pants?

He's still top of the Mids watchlist no?
